Mark and Ryan made the journey back to Ryan’s apartment in silence. Mark drove, occasionally steeling little glances at his partner, who’s eyes remained closed, his forehead creased by a deep frown, head leaning against the window the whole time.
He sighed heavily. He was worried about Ryan. Something had happened in that kitchen. He wasn’t sure exactly what, but he thought he had a good idea why it had happened. Bam was having a tough time accepting Ryan as being gay. He guessed he could understand, but still, he knew it was hurting Ryan and for that, he almost hated Bam.
As he pulled up alongside the kerb outside Ryan’s apartment and the car slowed to a stop, Ryan stirred, groaning softly.
“Are we home?” He asked, sitting up straight and rolling his shoulders to ease the ache.
“Yep.”
“Great. I’m beat. I can’t wait to crash out.” He yawned loudly for effect. He wasn’t so much tired, as emotionally drained and really, he didn’t feel like company, especially not Mark’s company which usually ended up with the two of them making out and that was most definitely out of the question tonight since Bam was still all over him and Mark was sure to figure everything out if he got within kissing distance. Not knowing how to tell Mark that without making some kind of confession, Ryan figured he’d just pretend to be tired, Mark would get the hint...eventually.
He reached out to push down the door handle, assuming Mark would do the same, but Mark spoke, his words making Ryan freeze.
“What happened between you and Bam in the kitchen?”
Fuck! He knows. Ryan thought and he felt his face flush and his head spin. He sooooo hated Bam right that moment for making him feel like such a shit. He really wished now that he’d been a little quicker earlier when he aimed that punch.
“I…” He began.
“You had a fight didn’t you?” What? A fight? Oh, Yeah, a fight, that was it. A big fucking fight. His shoulders slumped in relief. “He’s really not taking it well is he?”
“No. No he’s not.” Well, he wasn’t lying.. “His head’s all fucked up and he doesn’t know what to do or say to me anymore so he’s blaming me, this is my fault. I’m the one who ruined our friendship.” Suddenly, and unexpectedly, tears pricked at his eyes and he realised that his friendship with Bam really was ruined. That hurt more than he cared to admit. Still, he managed to keep from crying. He didn’t want Mark to know how he really felt.
“Babe.” Mark said softly, taking Ryan’s hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. “It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault at all, he’s the one with the problem not you, but if he’s any sort of a friend, he’ll get past it. It may take a while, but he will.”
“You think so?”
“I’m sure of it. He cares about you Ry that’s why this is so hard for him. If he didn’t care he’d have just told you to fuck off, right?”
He cares about me? The thought of Bam caring about him made his stomach flip. He wanted Bam to care about him, as more than a friend, but that just made everything even more complicated than it already was and he just knew someone, probably him, was going to get hurt before this was resolved.
“Maybe.” He said, trying hard not to think about where this was all heading, preferring to deal with things as they happened rather than dwell on shit. He offered Mark a half smile. “Thanks.”
“My pleasure. Now, go, get yourself inside and go to bed. You look like you’re about ready to collapse. I’ll see you tomorrow yeah?”
“Yeah.” The fact that Mark understood his need to be alone without him having to say anything only added to Ryan’s guilt. Mark was a good guy, a really good guy, he didn’t deserve to be treated the way Ryan was treating him right now. “If I was any sort of a man.” Ryan thought to himself. “I’d cut the poor bastard lose and let him find someone else.”
Ryan got out of the car then and pushed the door shut weakly, only just managing enough pressure for the thing to click shut properly. He trudged round behind the motor and was just headed up his front path when mark called out.
“Hey!” He stopped and turned back. “Don’t let him get you down, okay.”
“I won’t.” He already knew that was a lie but it made him feel just a little bit better to pretend. Mark smiled and blew him a kiss, then the engine roared to life and he slowly drove away, leaving Ryan feeling guilty and miserable and more alone than he’d ever felt in his life.

AN: Short and uninteresting I know, and I'm sorry, but it was necessary to set up the next chapter.
