Chapter 5: Good Morning Big Guy
When I woke up the clock on the stand said 10:27 and I heard the shower running. I looked around and saw my bags and other stuff on the floor on the side of the bed. ‘Surprise, my brothers actually didn’t kidnap me overnight. Whoa!” I walked over to see what I could scrounge up to wear just to run around in. I finally settled on plain white tank top and shorts as Glenn came out in a towel.
“’Morning Big Guy.”
“Good morning, Sunshine. Get enough sleep?” He asked as he went searching for clothes of his own to wear.
“Yeah, considering I slept next to a big snoring lug.”
“Who were you sleeping next to? From what I heard you were snoring.” He looked up from his bag that he was looking in. I had to laugh at him. His hair was soaking wet and pulled back with a leather strap.
“Ladies don’t snore, Mr. Jacobs. Sorry to bust your bubble.”
“Could’ve fooled me Ms. Hardy.” I stuck my tongue out at him as I grabbed a towel and headed for the shower. It is very uncomfortable sleeping in jeans and I was thankful to have a hot shower and change of clothes.
I came out about 20 minutes later clean, dry and dressed. Glenn was sitting reading the paper and STILL trying to dry his hair. I walked up to him and took the towel he was using.
“Men. Must I do everything for you?”
I chided him on the mess of tangles his hair was in. I got his comb and brush and started in trying to get out the worst of it. He just sat there reading his paper and sipping coffee as I worked. When I finished, I braided it back. “There ya go, Big Guy. That should keep it out of your face.” He smiled as I sat on the arm of his chair and poured myself a cup of the coffee he was drinking.
“So when did my bags get here. I left them in the boys suite yesterday.”
“Well, your brothers came by looking for you around nine and we all had a little talk. They weren’t too happy about it, but I convinced them to let you travel with me. They made you my responsibility for the time being, so they could be alone with their women. Therefore, you’re mine to torture and torment. MWAHAHAHAH!”
“My Gods! Those two letting me go with some stranger. Scary. So, then what are we going to do today?”
“Well the next show is at the Keel Center in St. Louis. So were going to drive there. Should only take a few hours. I’m planning to go to visit my parents for a few days while I’m there because I don’t have another show until next Monday. Neither do you. From now on, your schedule is my schedule, according to Vince. I’m going to leave in about 20 minutes, so lets get packed up and everything put in the truck. I want to get there around two so you can meet my parents.”
“Ok, but I’m buying breakfast.”
I forgot he eats a lot. It was about as impressive as last night at the bar. Nevertheless, we left within his 20 minutes of wanting to leave and headed east for the four-hour drive to St. Louis. Since I had never been there, he pointed out different sights like the Arch, the Anheuser-Busch Brewery and others. Finally, we turned into a small brick and stone house on the outskirts of the suburbs. It was a two-story farmhouse with a fence around it and two very large dogs yelping and barking on the wraparound porch.
“This your house? It’s beautiful!”
Glenn smiled and nodded. “Yeah. There’s only one bedroom furnished so you get it and I’ll take the couch. Get your stuff.” We got out of the rental and I followed him to the gate. “Gator! Teke! Come here boys!” The two very large dogs came bounding out to greet us. The gray dog came up and knocked me down and the black and tan began licking my face. I was laughing but it apparently scared Glenn to death. “Gator down! Teke! Faith, are you ok? Did they hurt you?”
“I’m fine Glenn really. He is just being the big puppy that he is. Aren’t you Gator?”
We walked into a very sparsely decorated house with a vaulted ceiling. “I just bought it a few months ago and haven’t gotten to get anything to decorate it yet.” He led me upstairs to the only furnished bedroom. It contained a larger-than-King-size cast-iron bed, a few dressers and pictures.
“Go ahead and use the dresser over there for your stuff. You’ll be here a week or so. Make yourself at home.”
He dropped his bags at the door to the room and unloaded everything into a laundry basket. He took some of my stuff too and headed for the basement. I sorted through everything and put it where I could find it but where it wouldn’t get in Glenn’s way. I headed downstairs to look around. The pictures on the wall were the usual, what I guessed was him as a baby, the dogs, what looked like family and friends. I walked to the kitchen and heard him coming up the stairs from the basement.
“Ok, laundry is going. I am going to go visit my parents. Do you want to go with?”
I gave him a hearty ‘Yes’ and we went out and climbed back in his truck. “So who takes care of your dogs while you’re away? You hire a dog sitter or something?”
“No. My dad comes over everyday to check on them. He loves those two to death. They’re like his grandkids.” We pulled into the driveway of a white two-story house. Glenn got out and his face lit up.
“Happy to be home?”
He looked at me and smiled. “Family is very important to me, and my mom and dad are up there in years. Dad’s retired from the airforce and isn’t doing well lately, health-wise, so I like to come make sure they’re alright. I always enjoy coming home to see them.”
“I understand that. I couldn’t live without my family around me. Not matter how evil I think they are sometimes.”
He walked up to the door, stopping only to pet the orange tabby seated on the top stair. I followed and stood behind him as he rang the doorbell. I heard a light ‘Come in’ from the other side.
“Mom, Dad? It’s me.”
A very petite woman with gray hair and the same kind eyes as Glenn lead me into the front hall. “Oh Glenn! Welcome home! David! Glenn’s home! How long are you here for dear?”
“A week. We have an event in town tonight. Hey Dad.”
An older man with salt and pepper hair and half moon glasses came down the stairs. He definitely had a very military feel about him. “Son. Welcome home.” I could tell it was a very heartfelt reunion and that this was a close-knit family.
Glenn turned and grabbed me by the hand. “Mom, Dad, this is Faith.” His Mom smiled.
“Hello young lady. Welcome to our home.”
I smiled and offered my hand. “Thank you Ma’am”
We sat down in the living room and talked for about an hour. I was asked questions about my family, background and past. For some reason I felt so at home with his family. His Mom, Catherine, was extremely friendly and his dad, David, seemed just like mine. Stern and fatherly, but he loved his son and wife unconditionally. Catherine was like I imagine my mom would be like if she were alive. She sounded like a real take-charge type of lady. Which she was.
“Well boys, I better go get dinner ready. Would you like to come help Faith, so the boys can talk?” Being a self-proclaimed good cook myself, I agreed and followed her to the kitchen. We stepped into a big country style kitchen with mint green and peach wallpaper and white trim. Everything was neat and tidy. It almost felt like a grandmother’s kitchen, the kind where you’d eat home baked cookies. Catherine headed for the refrigerator bringing out a bowl of marinated chicken. She placed out a shallow oven pan and asked me to fill it with the chicken and marinade. I finished and placed it in the oven. “Thank you dear. I’ll finish this chocolate cake as soon as we clean the corn.”
We finished preparing everything, including Glenn’s favorite chocolate cake. “Well, my dear. It looks like everything is ready. Why don’t you go out and get the men and I will finish setting the table?”
Nodding, I headed out of the kitchen. Not seeing them inside, I headed toward the front door. I heard them talking out side the door. I was quiet as I peeked and listened. I heard my name mentioned by his father.
“So Glenn, tell me about Faith. Been a while since you brought home anyone for us to meet. What’s the deal?”
“No deal Dad. Just a good friend. She’s a couple of the guys’ younger sister. I told them I’d keep her out of trouble. She’s fun hang around with, that’s all.”
He leaned forward. “Don’t give me that. It’s Bull and you know it. It’s highly unusual for you to bring someone home. You didn’t even bring Myra home until after you married her. I know you better than that.”
“I’ve only known her a day, Dad. It’s not serious at all. It takes a lot more time than that. And don’t bring up Myra. Myra isn’t anywhere near her league and I will not let this relationship turn out that way.”
I heard Glenn heave a sigh and the chair squeak as he leaned forward. “You know, you’re right though. It’s too soon though, isn’t it? I just met her yesterday. I don’t know.”
“Maybe. It is your call what you do. Just promise me something. Make sure this is what you want before you make any permanent arrangements. I seriously doubt though that anything would happen. She looks like a good one. She’s a very nice girl, considering she looks a bit strange, those earrings and all. I don’t get the purple and blue thing, but hey, I’m old fashioned.”
“She’s definitely not like anyone else. She admits she’s strange and enjoys it. I just don’t want to rush it. Not this time. Just looking at her and my heart starts to beat a mile a minute. I don’t know if she feels the same way Dad. What if she doesn’t and I scare her off. I don’t want to ruin my friendship with her just because she doesn’t want me. I'd rather have her as a friend than lose everything. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to rush it for both of us and be in that situation again. I’m afraid. I’m afraid of what will happen. I can get out in a ring in front of millions of people all the time and be Kane but I can’t go up to one woman and say what I feel about her. I don’t want to be hurt again.”
“Glenn, go take a look at that girl. I saw the way she looked at you. If you watched long enough you’d see the same thing. And, you know, telling a woman how you feel about her is much different than going out and doing what you are paid to. It’s a different kind of bravery. When I met your mother it took over a year for me to tell her how I felt about her. I didn’t know how she felt but I still told her. Part of life is taking the chance. Whether it is a physical risk or risking your heart, your life will be full of them. I think this is a chance you should take.”
“I’ll talk to her tonight at the show. That way I’ll be slightly calmer and I can think it out between now and then.”
I chose this time to open the door and walk outside. “Gentlemen, would you like to join us ladies inside for supper?”
His Dad smiled. “Miss Faith, we would be delighted. Wouldn’t we Glenn.”
As they followed I knew after tonight my part in Glenn’s life was going to change.
