Part Six – The Gaming Board is Set
“An Angel?” Die asks, eyebrow hitching in response. Kaoru nods, causing the younger vampire to look away for a moment. The elder’s face is full of good humor, and there’s darkness in his eyes, which goes unnoticed by the redhead. When his childe looked back up, the darkness was hidden, replaced by distant interest in the other’s well being.
“Don’t tell me . . . you still can’t sense other beings?” Kaoru’s question is faint, gentle. He takes up the wineglass and examines the toothpick in the liquid.
“Beings which are not mortal nor vampire, no. I cannot sense them. There was something odd about him though, the friend.” Die’s voice is light as well, but shame rides his tone for his shortcomings. Kaoru was the only one who knew of this weakness. So far, the rather heartless elder had kept it a close secret.
“Next time, follow the oddness within the being, you will find what it is.” Kaoru tells him, fishing the toothpick from the wine. His eyes flick up to Die. “You still have much to learn. Are you sure it is wise that you take a fledgling?”
“Who said I was going to make a fledgling?” The redhead asks, eyebrow hitching once more. He watches as Kaoru shrugs and sits the glass down on the table.
“Kyo would make a lovely vampire . . .” The elder’s voice is light and purring suddenly. “And if an Angel has an eye on him, walks in his life as a friend to protect him . . . He must be something special.
Wouldn’t you say so?” He gestures with the toothpick at Die to emphasize the ‘you’ in his sentence. He then brings the little pointed stick nearer to himself, fingers clasped around both ends in little caresses.
“What are you trying to say?” Die eyes his Sire warily. Rarely did Kaoru take more interest in mortals that to kill them for sustenance. Toshiya and himself, as well as the four others that made up Kaoru’s brood . . . they had been made for reasons unknown. At least, that was the only explanation Kaoru would give.
“That he must be something special. I’m sure you heard me, unless you somehow went deaf while I was just speaking?”
“I didn’t go deaf, but you’re not going to persuade me into telling you why he interest me. Nor will you get me to admit I want to change him, because I have no interest in doing so. Turning him, I mean.”
“You’re cruel, Die.” Kaoru pouts softly, flicking the toothpick at his eldest childe with mock disdain. “But he does have my curiosity now as well.” Die was playing with the stick then, having plucked it from the air as it was flying across the table with the intended destination of his pupil. Kaoru watches him for a moment, before adding his last few words with a small, lustful smile. “And, he is attractive.”
“Leave him be.” The younger one stated, looking at his Sire sharply over the toothpick he held before his eyes. “He’s on my territory, he is mine . . . I don’t care if he has your curiosity. He is my property due to the fall of boarders. Leave. Him. Alone.”
Kaoru’s eyes narrow at that, but only for a second. He then tilts his chin gently up, taking on a cold, careless look as he stares at his childe. “Is that a threat?”
“Do you think it is?”
“Die. . . Die, my darling, darling Die.” Kaoru shakes his head slowly, laughing gently but ever so darkly.
“What?”
“You think you can threaten me?” Kaoru’s laugh is gone, his predatory eyes locked on his eldest. “And all over a mortal, that you supposedly do not want to turn? Special or not, this boy can not be somehow so important to you that you risk my displeasure . . . “
“Stop trying to make me talk about him.” Die narrows his eyes, not liking the feelings which the thought of the blonde youth invoke inside of him, the anger at the thought of said youth in his Sire’s arms.
“I don’t care why you don’t want me to have him.” Kaoru shakes his head slowly. “No, I want to know why an Angel is his best friend . . . and I want him. So . . . here’s the challenge Die. I will get him, he’s mine. And if you try to prevent me . . . or in some insane moment decide to take him before I can . . . well, I’ll make it certain you remember what it is to be under the crush of my thumb.”
“Kaoru . . .”
“Die.” The same little smile on the lips of the hawk like predator. “Don’t defy me over some pretty little blonde boy. Besides . . .” Suddenly, Kaoru was right beside him, moving faster than Die could anticipate, or even see. “If I turn him . . . you can still play with him.” A kiss to his cheek, the thin lips are colder than ice.
“Kaoru, leave him alone.” Die whispers. But it’s too late, Kaoru is already gone, leaving Die along in the booth. He sits there a moment, stunned into silence. And then, he moves, going as fast as he can, a streak of red and black leaving the club.

Kyo comes to slowly, Shinya sitting by his bedside, changing a damp rag across his forehead. Seeing the blonde’s eyes open, the Angel smiles down at his friend. He’d seen the telltale bite marks on the youth, and knew that the mission for this youth’s soul was quickly turning into a battle. It had been promised that it would be this way, but still, it surprised Shinya to see the mechanics of it in action. Three vampires after him, and if things kept up, there could possibly be more. There was nothing he could do, short of killing the young man, that Shinya could do to stop this. And, archangel or not, Shinya was not permitted to take Kyo’s life. Really, if he had permission, he still would not have been able to do it. The youth was special to him. Perhaps he had stayed in the mortal real for too long? He’d developed such deep, unswayable emotions. How disappointing! But, it happened to the best Angels, or so the saying went.
“Are you feeling better, Kyo-kun?” Shinya’s voice is low, kind and caring. A hint of worry is also there as well, right along with confusion. Acting as though he feared that his friend could have some type of disease as yet undetected by medical professionals. “You passed out!”
“I – I did?” Kyo asks, trying to sit up. Shinya keeps him firmly but gently down, shaking his head at him. “Ne,” Kyo sighs, staying down after a moment’s struggle against his friend, “but I feel fine!”
“You’re very pale still.” His friend reaches for a glass of water he’d brought with him from the kitchen when he’d prepared the wet cloth pressed to Kyo’s forehead. “Maybe you just haven’t gotten enough sleep lately?”
“Maybe.” Kyo agrees, closing his eyes. He sighs softly, his hand going to the wet cloth on his head. He suddenly does feel so horrible. Little does he know that it’s a gentle manipulation from the tall one at his side. He then opens his eyes, seeing the water glass Shinya held out. “You do realize I need to sit up to drink that, right?”
“Of course.” Shinya smirks, retracting the little mental suggestion to Kyo’s body to feel tired. It would set on it’s own, and the boy would settle into it on his own. And keep him home for the night, well, what remained of it. “But, you’re not getting out of bed until you’ve rested more. Promise?”
“Unless I have to go to the bathroom.” Kyo glowers up at him. Shinya just laughs, gently.
“Of course, unless you have to go the bathroom. But, no video games. No computer. Just bed. You need to sleep, Kyo-kun.”
“Hai, hai, hai. You sound as though you’re my mother.” Kyo sits up then, taking the water glass.
“Sip it slowly.” Shinya presses the wet cloth gently to his forehead as he does so, the concerned look on his face. He receives another glare for his efforts, but the motherly advice is taken. He knows very well what Kyo is feeling due to his sleepy suggestion. But some of it is also remainders from the forced sleep earlier, as well as from those two little marks on his neck. Even if those marks were not from this evening. Had the one he chased out been here before? Or had it been Die’s marks? Or the one whom he’d sensed watching from the rooftop in the parking lot? It doesn’t matter, he tells himself. They all want him. He studies Kyo until the glass is handed back to him, empty. Kyo turns from then, snuggling down into the blankets. Shinya knew what was coming, and though he had produced the ends to it, he was still worried. Three hours until dawn. A lot could happen in that time.
“Ne, Shinya-kun, you should go home.” Kyo’s voice is almost muffled in his pillows, the cloth thrown to the floor once it was free from Shinya’s hand and in Kyo’s own control. He yawns, truly exhausted. “I’ll call you if I need anything.”
“Are you sure?” The Angel asks, touching the youth’s shoulder gently. “I could always sleep on the couch.” He hoped the other would say yes. It was the whole reason for making him feel so sleepy again . . . or, well, one of the reasons.
“Iie. The couch isn’t comfy at all, you know that. You hate the couch. Go home, ne?” Kyo turned half-closed eyes up at Shinya. “I promise, I’ll be fine. And no getting up except to go the bathroom.” Shinya couldn’t resist returning the weak smile the blonde gave him.
“Well, if you’re sure you’ll be okay.” Reluctance was heavy in the Angel’s voice. For more reasons than Kyo could guess.
“I’m sure. Go home, get some sleep. You look pale too.” Kyo’s voice was getting fainter, and the tall one knew he must leave. Once he was dismissed, he had no choice. It was the rule. Even if Kyo had no idea what Shinya going home could entail for him. In moments, the blonde was asleep, face buried in his well-worn pillows. And Shinya, Shinya was on his way, albeit reluctantly, to his own apartment.
