Part VI
Simple Things That Make You Run Away
The tour had now taken Piper and the Rejects to San Antonio, Texas, Piper’s hometown. Things between Piper and Tyson were going rather well after she had told him she’d move in with him. The two of them were now in Piper’s house trying to pack her belongings. Tyson had met her parents and was meeting her friends tonight. He was stoked, but yet a bit nervous. Piper was folding some of her clothes and putting them in a box. Tyson was sitting on her floor putting her CD’s into a box. He stopped and held up BBMak’s first album.
“Pipes, who the hell is this?” He asked, rather curious. She turned.
“It’s BBMak.” He still looked bewildered, so she continued. “It’s this English band that kind of fell threw, but their music was and is amazing. I was listening to them before you came along.” That caught his attention and he decided he wanted to hear this band. He popped the CD in her stereo. Soon ‘Can’t Say’ by BBMak could be heard. “Damn this song is good.” She stated.
“They’re all right.” He paused, a Savage Garden CD now in his hands. “You’re a Savage Garden fan too?” She just laughed. He had discovered her old music collection. She couldn’t wait to dig through his.
“Yes, I’m a Savage Garden fan, or was until they split. What can I say; I’m a lyrics girl. It’s not always about the music, but what the music has to say. Maybe that’s why I was drawn to your stuff. You write good lyrics, and that’s important. I like bands…” Tyson placed his fingers upon her lips. She was rambling again. He noticed that she tended to do that quite a bit sometimes, especially when she was tired or extremely calm, as she was now.
“You’re rambling again. It’s cute when you ramble, but I get your point and I agree.” He then replaced his fingers with his mouth. Soon the two were again lip-locked. Piper was the one to pull back as there was still much packing to finish and they only had one more day and a show tomorrow night.
“Ty, we’ve got to get finished. I promise they’ll be plenty of time for this later.” With that she kissed him on the cheek and continued her packing.
“You want some help?” Piper turned when she heard her younger sister, Shannon, ask the question.
“Yeah, you wanna help me fold some clothes. Ty’s taking care of my CD’s. I don’t think he could have handled much more then that. I’ve seen his bus, it’s not pretty.” She whispered the last bit to Shannon. Tyson threw a CD case at her.
“I heard that!” He yelled. Shannon and Piper both began to laugh. The rest of the afternoon was spent putting the remainder of Piper’s belongings into boxes. Her and Tyson were both amazed that they had gotten it taken care of all in one day. Their reward was soon to be had as they neared the outing with Piper’s close friends.
Later that night Tyson stood outside of Piper’s door. She was taking forever to get ready, and they were just going to hang out downtown for a few hours. He had been ready almost an hour ago and couldn’t believe she was taking so long. He was beginning to think she’d never be ready.
“Pipes, what the hell is taking you so long? We’re gonna be late and I know you hate to be late.” He said through the door.
“Damn it, don’t rush me. We’re not gonna be late. I’m almost finished.” She replied. Tyson leaned against the hallway wall in frustration. Sometimes she was nothing more then impossible. It wasn’t long before she emerged from her room. “So, was it worth the wait?” She asked shyly slowly spinning around. He smiled and took her in his arms.
“It always is.” He replied kissing her lightly on the cheek. “So can we go now?” He asked being as he was a bit anxious to meet her friends. She smiled, sensing that he was more then ready to leave.
“Yup, just need to call James so he can call everybody else and tell them that we’re on our way.” She replied. With that they both ran out the door. The night was going to be interesting and they both intended to have a good time.
They soon arrived at the Hard Rock Café where everyone had decided to meet and eat. Lana was the first to see Piper and Piper ran to hug her. Tyson couldn’t help but laugh. They looked as though they hadn’t seen each other in ages.
“Lana, damn it’s good to see you!” Piper screamed. Nancy saw her next and gave her a hug.
“It’s good to see you. I mean hell one minute your in Austin and the next you’re dating a celebrity!” Lana stated and Nancy agreed.
“Yeah, not to mention the fact that you are a celebrity.” She stated as James came up to her.
“So, this must be Tyson, huh?” He asked. Piper smiled and took Tyson’s hand gently pulling him closer to her.
“Yeah, guys this is Tyson. Tyson my friends.” Piper was positively glowing. Lana looked Tyson up and down.
“Piper, I swear, you did good, but I gotta ask, does he have any brothers?” Lana asked completely straight-faced. Piper couldn’t help but laugh.
“No, but I’ve got three band mates if you’re interested.” He chimed in. Lana and Nancy both smiled.
“Single band mates?” They both asked in unison. Tyson just nodded, the guys were going to kill him for all of this.
“’Well, two are single.” He replied. At least Chris would still be talking to him.
“Lana, don’t harass my boyfriend. You’ll meet the other guys tomorrow at the show. Remember I got you guys free backstage passes?” Piper said as they all headed into the restaurant. The night was young, and Tyson could tell that it was going to be entertaining just even to hear Piper and her friends talk about everything that had gone on since Piper had last left San Antonio. He couldn’t help but realize that she hadn’t even wanted to go to perform in Austin that week.
“You didn’t want to go?’ He asked her. She nodded.
“Yeah, Luke had gotten another gig at this local place called the White Rabbit, and I really wanted to play there because you did, but then I remember that we had to be in Austin that week. Things turned out right in the end. Serendipity must have kicked in, ‘cuz I met you that same night.” Tyson smiled at her words. She had this special way of making him feel like he was something special. She was the first to ever make him feel that way. He leaned in and kissed her gently, Lana snapped a picture as he did so.
Tyson stood backstage, Piper’s hand in his own. It was the night of one of their last shows and they were both waiting for her friends to arrive. Soon, Lana, Nancy, and James walked over to her. Lana was the first to speak, as she was the most outgoing of the three.
“So, where are your band mates? Piper’s told me that I’ll like Chris. Not a clue what he looks like though.” Chris walked over at the sound of his name, having been standing nearby.
“Ty, can you go round up Mike and Nick? Chris this is Lana, Nancy, and James.” Chris smiled at Piper’s words as Tyson ran of to go and find Mike and Nick. As predicted, Lana was attracted to Chris, but as Piper already knew, Chris had a girl waiting for him at home in Stillwater. Soon Mike and Nick joined the group as Tyson tried to pull Piper away. She stopped him, wanting to spend time with everyone before the show. “Ty, what?” She asked, slightly annoyed. He looked at the ground knowing she was going to get angry with him for wanting to go ahead and do their usual good luck ritual. They were both always tense before a show.
“Well, I figured we’d let them talk and go, ya know…” He dragged out the last word. Piper could have hit him. She couldn’t understand how he was always in the mood for sex before a show. Usually, she was more then happy to comply with his request, but tonight was different. Why couldn’t he see that?
“Look, I’m not in the mood for it right now. My friends all took off work to come and see us perform tonight. Plus, whether you believe it or not, that means something. I’d like to talk to them for a bit.” She stated as gently as she could. She could see anger in Tyson’s eyes, just a touch, but it was there.
“Fine.” He replied. Nick looked over at Tyson, who was now walking away from the group, and knew that moment had been the beginning of the end. This is how it always started. Tyson would get mad over something stupid and then the anger would just grow, until neither one could handle it.
Later that night as the tour bus headed towards it’s next destination, Piper laid awake in bed. Tyson was in the next room playing guitar. She could hear the chords being played and soon Tyson’s voice washed over her. He was singing one of her more favorite songs, ‘My Paper Heart’. She quietly crawled out of her bunk, not wanting to wake Isaac and Joey, who were sound asleep, and walked into the area where Tyson sat. He didn’t even notice that she was there, as he was completely involved in his music. She sat down, crossed legged, on the floor. She looked up at him as he played. His eyes soon caught hers as he continued to sing.
“Please just don’t play with me, my paper heart will bleed, this wait for destiny won’t do, be with me please I beseech you, simple things that make you run away, catch you if I can.” He stopped singing, and set his guitar down behind the couch. He motioned for her to come and sit beside him, which she did. “Pipes, I’m sorry for being such a jerk tonight and for just walking off like I did.” Their eyes soon met,
“Ty, it’s cool.” She stated, but he wasn’t going to let her just brush things off.
“No, it’s not cool. I really am sorry. I just get uptight before shows, and you help me loosen up, you know?” She laughed as he smiled.
“Yes, this I know. That’s why I said it’s cool. I know you get tense before shows, hell so do I.” He leaned in and kissed her. She soon pulled back and laid her head on his lap and began to fidget with the hem of his shirt. He began to run his fingers through her hair. He could tell she wanted his shirt off when she began to play with his belt.
“Here?” He asked, and upon receiving a nod, smiled. Soon Piper was underneath him. He was getting what he had wanted earlier.
The tour had now ended. Piper and Tyson were trying to get all of her stuff in his house. Things were going rather well considering he had such a small house and they both had a lot of shit to fit in it. They were both now in his living room with cans of paint. That was the one room in his house that desperately needed a paint job from all the parties he had thrown in it. They had picked out a nice blue color; well Piper had picked it out. It perfectly matched the blue in Tyson’s eyes. He watched as she painted the wall next to him. He couldn’t help but think of tackling her to the ground. She looked over at him, catching him watching her.
“What?’ She asked sweetly. He just smiled at her.
“You look hot painting that wall.” She rolled her eyes at his comment. She thought a minute and realized how clean the both of them were. She looked down at the paint bucket next to her feet and then back up at Tyson. He caught on to her plan rather quick. “You wouldn’t?” She just smiled and dipped her paintbrush in the bucket. Suddenly Tyson felt the sticky wet substance dripping down his face. “I can’t believe you painted me.” He stated. He took a step towards her and grabbed her by the arms. His face was more or less covered in blue paint. He kissed her, making sure to get her face covered in paint as well. She pulled back laughing and then stuck her hands in the paint and put them up Tyson’s shirt, further covering him in paint. He glared at her and grabbed an entire bucket of paint. She took off running and ended up in his back yard. He still had the paint bucket in hand. ‘I’m gonna cover you in paint!” He yelled, trying not to laugh in the process. They were both laughing and running about his back yard. Needless to say, both enjoyed painting his living room.
A few days had gone by as Piper sat in the now blue living room talking to Nancy on the phone. Piper was talking to Nancy about Tyson, having not told her much about him while she was in town. Tyson was off at Nick’s working on some new song he had thought up the night before, but she was positive that he would be drinking, as he often did when he went to Nick’s even to work.
“He’s definitely an interesting person to live with. He’ll randomly pick up a guitar and just start playing at any point in time.” Piper stated. Nancy laughed.
“Are you serious?” Piper smiled.
“Yeah, like last night he got this good melody when we were in the car driving to get groceries and he literally pulled a u-turn and went back home. It was completely crazy. Then he like ran in the house and began to work with it. It was the funniest thing ever.” She replied. Nancy laughed. She had known Piper for years and never heard her go on about some guy in a positive manner for this long. They had been talking for hours about nothing but Tyson.
“But you said earlier that he’s hard to live with. What exactly is hard about living with someone that good looking?” Nancy asked, prying into her friends mind. Piper thought a for maybe a split second.
“The way he thinks cereal is the best food ever, and the way all he wears is chucks, not that I don’t love chucks, but even when it’s freezing outside. But most of all the way he comes home drunk sometimes. It scares me, it does.” She paused; looking around to make sure Tyson hadn’t gotten home yet. This was the first time she had really addressed how Tyson would go out with the guys all the time and come home completely shit-faced. “I mean, some people act all hyper and retarded and then others act all depressed. With Ty, I never know what kind of mood he’s in. It all depends on whether or not he’s had a good day. Of course, half the time I can’t even tell that, because since we moved in together he doesn’t even talk to me like he used to.” She stopped when Tyson walked into the house. “Hey, Nancy, I’ve gotta go. I’ll call you tomorrow.” She stated. They both proceeded to say their good byes and then hung up. Tyson walked over to Piper; to her astonishment he wasn’t drunk. He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.
“What’ve you been doing all night? You look comfy.” He stated plopping down on the couch beside her.
“Just talking to Nancy about stuff.” Tyson raised an eyebrow as he placed his arm around Piper. She proceeded to rest her head on his shoulder.
“What kind of stuff?” He asked, slyly. She smiled.
“Just stuff.” She replied, snuggling closer to Tyson. He kissed the top of her head and rested his chin there for a moment, thinking.
“Pipes?” He whispered. She moved her head, now looking into his blue eyes. “I love you.” He just said those words and looked into her eyes. She smiled at him and then laid her head, again, on his shoulder. These were the moments she cherished.
“I love you, too.” She whispered to him. Times like this were those that made all of the things that happened between them seem to fade away. All hers doubts vanished, and she instantly forgave him for what ever she had been upset with him for. He smiled to himself. He knew right then he could never be without her. He loved her; she was his entire world. She was his life now.
