Chapter 6
When Ann got back to the suit she was sharing with Lynn, she got a little nervous because Lynn wasn’t back yet. Then she remembered her suggestion to Lynn and Brendan. ‘I guess I will see her in the morning,’ Ann thought as she drew a bath. Ann wished she hadn’t lost her buzz. ‘Baths are much more fun when you’re drunk.’ She finally went to bed around 3AM, and still no Lynn. ‘She must be having fun.’
That was exactly the case when Ann woke up around noon and found Lynn just getting in the door.
“Did you get any sleep?” Ann asked.
“Not really. But what I did involved a bed…”Ann burst out laughing as Lynn continued. “…and the floor, and the bathroom. I think we may have used a chair or the couch, some kind of furniture.”
“You can stop now. So I take it you had a good time?”
“Yes, yes I did. Speaking of good times, how did it go with Gerry?”
“Okay, I guess.”
“What happened?”
“We just talked. We went to an all night diner and talked,” she said, looking a bit sheepish.
“What are you not telling me?”
“He kissed me.”
“How was it?”
“One of the greatest I have ever had.”
“And then you just talked?” Lynn looked very surprised.
“Yeah I don’t really want to be in a relationship right now.”
“Great sex doesn’t mean a relationship and I though you were over Adam.”
“No.”
“That sucks for you. And on a differed subject, what are we doing tonight?”
“I am going to dinner with Gerry and you are coming with.”
“Why?”
“Cause I said so. Call Brendan and bring him.”
“Well if you are going to force me,” Lynn said sarcastically.

Despite the fact that Ann and Gerry had decided to just be friends, Ann caught herself obsessing over her appearance. Of course, Lynn teased her. The girls were going to meet Brendan and Gerry at Avalon around 8:00, but of course they didn’t show up until 8:30.
“Don’t you look nice,” Brendan said pulling out a chair for Lynn. Seeing him do this, Gerry got up to pull out Ann’s chair.
“You don’t have to do that,” she said pulling out the chair herself. “It isn’t like we are on a date.”
“I know. I just didn’t want you to feel left out,” Gerry said with a smile.
They might not have been on a date, but it certainly looked like it. On one side of the table sat Lynn and Brendan, getting closer to each other minuet by minuet. On the other side sat Gerry and Ann. With every joke that Gerry tried to deliver, Ann liked him even more. Then she would realize how much she was flirting, and tense up a bit. ‘I shouldn’t like him,’ she though. ‘he is probably just acting this way to be nice; he cant really like me.’ When the salad came, Lynn had had enough of Ann acting like an idiot.
She leaned over and whispered, “Ann I need to talk to you. Come with me to the bathroom.” As they got up, Lynn said, “Boys, Ann and I need to do a little girl talk, we will be right back.”
“Don’t just talk about me,” Brendan said as they walked away, making Gerry laugh.
When he was sure they were gone, Gerry leaned over to Brendan. “How is it going with, what is her name, Lynn?”
“Great,” Brendan said with a smirk. “I had her begging for it last night.” Both guys laughed.
“You know Ann pretty well don’t you?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Well, how to put this. I like her, and I know she likes me, but its like she wont show it.”
“Are you getting all emotional on me?”
“No. I am trying to have a real conversation.”
“Oh, okay. What happened last night?”
“I kissed her.”
“Nice.”
“But she pulled away. She gave me some speech about just wanting to be friends. She said she couldn’t take it anymore. Do you know anything about that?”
“Yeah. She just got out of a really bad relationship. She doesn’t really trust guys anymore.”
“Why, what happened?”
“Do you really want to know, or are you just trying to get into her pants?”
“No, I really want to know. There is something there; I can see it in her eyes.”
“Well, okay, I will tell you. But you can’t let her know that you know. She’ll kill me.” Brendan went on to tell Gerry all about Adam and how he got another girl pregnant and left Ann for her. He told him about how the song that made Ann famous was the one she wrote the night Adam told her everything. Gerry now realized why she was so sad that night in the bar; why she had cried. “You know, I am not really sure if she will ever trust herself enough to love again. There was just too much shit she went through. I do know what you mean when you say there is something there. I can see it in the way she acts around you. She wants you; she just won’t admit it to herself.”

Meanwhile, with Ann and Lynn…
“Ann,” Lynn asked as they walked into the bathroom, “what the hell is your problem?”
“What do you mean?” Ann replied, looking a bit confused.
“You have been ‘dancing’ around Gerry all night. And you know what I mean. You either like him or you don’t; you can't change your mind every five minuets.”
“I’m not.”
“Don’t lie to me and don’t lie to yourself. I remember when you first told me about the guy you saw in the bar. Though I had never seen him, I knew it was Gerry just by the way you reacted to him. I know you better than anyone and I know when you like someone. You can't hide it.”
“But I am afraid of getting hurt.”
“I know you are. Every time you are in a relationship I am a little afraid of you getting hurt. But Gerry is different. Something about him makes me feel that he would be good for you, if you would just give him a chance. You know I don’t agree with you that there is one true love out there for everyone, but I know how much faith you have in that thought. I know how much you want the perfect love, no matter how much I don’t think you will ever get it. I want you to be happy, and I really think that Gerry can make you happy. There is something in the way he flirts with you that is so pure.”
“Really, you think?”
“I wouldn’t have just said all the lovey-dovey crap if I didn’t. Just give him a chance.” Lynn smiled and said, “If you don’t sleep with him, I will.”
Ann smiled back. “So does that mean that I can sleep with Brendan?”
“No.”
They both laughed as they walked back to the table. After the talk she had with Lynn, Ann was much more relaxed. It was as though her entire mood had changed. She wasn’t afraid to touch Gerry’s shoulder when she laughed. She just seemed happier.
Dinner was great. Ann and Gerry laughed when Brendan dropped his pasta in his lap, but nothing could compare to the look on his face when Lynn began to help clean off his pants. Everyone was having a good time. They almost got kicked out of the restaurant when they started an ice fight. Lynn was glad to see her friends so happy once she finally let her guard down.
When it was time to leave, Lynn and Brendan decided to go get a few drinks. Lynn tried to convince Ann to go with them, but she said she was tired. So Lynn and Brendan got in a cab and Gerry and Ann shared one.
This ride was different. It was silent, except when they told the driver where to go. Ann looked down on the seat and saw Gerry stretching his hand. She admired how strong they looked; like the kind of hands a man should have. She brought her hand off her lap, hesitated for a moment, and gently placed her hand in his.
Gerry didn’t even look up when she did that. He entwined his fingers with hers and squeezed, as if to say what took you so long but I am glad you did. Ann began to scoot closer to him and Gerry pulled her hand to his mouth and laid a kiss on it. Ann wasn’t backing away this time.
Gerry let go of her hand and wrapped his arm around Ann’s shoulder. Ann laid her head on his shoulder and breathed in deeply. There was something about the way he touched her and the way he smelled that made Ann feel like nothing could ever go wrong.
When she laid her head on his shoulder, Gerry sighed with contentment. He kissed the top of her head. Her hair smelled like coconuts and lemons. At that point there was nothing that either of them wanted more the moment they were sharing.
When the driver pulled up to where Ann was staying, she lifted her head and stared into his perfect green eyes for a second. She threw caution to the wind and kissed him, long and deep. She slipped her tongue in between his lips and swirled it around his. After a minuet or so, Ann broke the kiss, bit his lower lip and got out. She didn’t say a word as she walked in the door. Ann didn’t do that to be a tease; she just really wanted to kiss him.
As the driver drove away, Gerry turned around to watch Ann walk into the hotel. ‘What has she done to me?’ he though. ‘In any other situation, I would have seen that as a sign to follow, but this wasn’t it.’ He knew she would let him know when she was ready.

When Ann got to her room, she realized that she wasn’t all that tired. As she changed into her pajamas, she flipped on the TV. She called room service and ordered a pot of tea. As she was flipping through the channels, she stopped on a station when she saw “Gerard Butler” on screen. It turned out to be Tomb Raider 2. ‘This should be interesting,’ she thought as she settled into the chair next to her bed with a cup of tea.
Despite her not wanting to, she was really enjoying the movie. There were gun fights, and punching, and Lara Croft was ass-kicking chick; what more could a person want. Of course, Ann thought Gerry was doing a fine job as Terry Sheridan. Ann noticed during the scene with him and Angelina that he wasn’t really acting.
As she was watching the scene, a strange thought popped into her head. She got up, grabbed her phone, and dialed Gerry.
“Hello?” Gerry said.
“Hey, it’s me, Ann,” she answered.
“So what’s going on? I thought you were tired.”
“No, I just needed to get out of there before I did something stupid.”
“What does that mean?” he asked with a chuckle.
“The cab ride was me trying to ignore my conscience.”
“Oh thanks. So anything like that that you do with me, is you doing something stupid,” Gerry said, truing to sound hurt. “Way to deflate a man’s ego.”
“Don’t be an ass,” Ann said with a chuckle.
“Sorry.”
“So the reason I called was that I am watching Tomb Raider 2 and I wanted to ask you a question.”
“Are you going to ask me why I made that movie?”
“No, actually I wanted to ask you if you slept with Angelina.” There was a short silence before Gerry answered.
“What?” It was obvious he wasn’t expecting her to ask that.
“Did you sleep with her? And if you didn’t, than you are a stupid, stupid man.”
“Why do you want to know?”
“Just answer the question Butler.”
“Yes I did. But to be honest, can you blame me?”
“Not really, I’d sleep with her.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yes, she’s fucking hot. What person, women included, wouldn’t want to?”
“Point taken.”
“I know this will sound weird,”
“Nothing you say could shock me now.”
“but on a scale of one to ten, how good was she?”
“Do I really have to answer that?”
“Hell yes, I wana know.”
“About an eight.”
“Really. Interesting.”
“You are a strange bird.”
“I know,” Ann said with a laugh.
“Can I change the subject a little?”
“Have at it Hoss.”
“Why did you kiss me?”
“I don’t know. I guess it just felt right.”
“Oh, okay.”
“What are you thinking?”
“I just want to know hoe you felt about me. Can you hold on a sec?”
“Yeah, sure.” It sounded like Gerry had covered the phone with his hand. She could tell he was talking to someone, she just couldn’t tell what he was saying. When he got back on the phone, it sounded like he was on an elevator.
“Do you like muffins?”
“Yeah, why?”
“What is your favorite kind?”
“Chocolate chip.” There was a knock at the door. “Hold on a sec, there is someone knocking.” When she opened the door, her mouth flew open and before she could say a thing…
“I am glad I brought the right kind,” Gerry said with a huge grin.
“What are you doing here? And how did you know which room I was in?” Ann asked, seeming to be a little nervous.
“Well, I wanted to see if you wanted a muffin and you weren’t smart enough not to use your real name when you checked in.” There was a short silence. “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”
“Yeah, come on in. I was just watching TV, but you already knew that. The living room will be better,” Ann said as she sat on the couch.
“Okay. Do you need more tea?”
“Sure. Cream and sugar please.” As Ann watched Gerry get her some tea, she realized how strange it was that he had just shown up. It was sweet though.
“So what are we watching?” Gerry asked sitting next to Ann on the couch.
“Well I don’t really know. I feel strange watching a movie with you in it while you are sitting next to me, so I figured I would change it.” Ann started to flip channels and found just what she wanted. “Oh look, it’s Moulin Rouge. Have you ever seen it?” Ann asked with a smirk, knowing very well that he probably never had and that he wasn’t going to enjoy it.
“No, can’t say that I have,” Gerry answered trying to sound interested.
“We don’t have to watch it if you don’t want to.”
“If you like it than I will give it a chance.”
Gerry didn’t care what he was watching, just as long as he could be with Ann. When she scooted closer to him, leaning against his chest, he really didn’t care what was going on.
Ann started to eat the muffin that Gerry brought her and dropped a piece down her shirt. Gerry chuckled when she reached down to retrieve it, realized that Gerry was watching, and her face turned red.
Eventually, Ann fell asleep. Her breathing was slow and steady. There was nothing about her that Gerry didn’t find adorable. The way she twitched when she was cold. And the way she snuggled closer to him when he found a blanket and placed it over her.
He started to pay attention to the movie a bit more, and was actually enjoying it. When the two main characters were singing the song, “Come What May” towards the end, Gerry started to sniffle.
Ann shifted a bit and said with her eyes still closed, “Are you crying?”
“Nope, not at all,” Gerry said wiping a tear away, thankful that Ann didn’t see it. Ann fell fast asleep again. As the movie ended, Gerry picked her up, ever so gently, and carried her off to bed.
As he was tucking her in, she said, “Stay with me.”
Gerry said nothing and got under the covers, positioning himself behind Ann. He kissed the back of her head as she pulled his arm over her and entwined her fingers in his, cradling his arm as a child would a teddy bear. As he listened to her breathing, Gerry slowly fell asleep, happy and contented even when Ann’s hair got in his mouth.
