Chapter 6 - **Changes**
Tamsin woke up feeling dazed and confused from the little sleep she had gotten. She groaned and pushed away the thoughts of the night before, threw off the covers and swung her legs out of bed a lot more energetically than she actually felt.
She traipsed over the carpet towards the bathroom and felt a little better once warm water made her skin tingle pleasantly. She let out a deep sigh and felt herself slowly relax. Once out of the shower with a fluffy towel slung around her body she walked into her kitchen. Rough calculations let her assume that 2 litres of coffee should do the trick to somehow get her through the morning.
Just as the fragrance of freshly brewed coffee spread in the kitchen, her shrill ring of her phone made Tam cringe. She quickly picked it up to stop the unwelcome noise. Of course it was Laura her partner in crime last night. Groaning inwardly she realised that her friend would want her to spill the beans. An hour later Laura had pulled the story out of Tamsin’s nose, although at least minus the details. Tamsin in return had heard Laura’s story including every detail without even asking for it.
As it turned out Laura and Gerry’s friend named Brian had ended up at his place, but to everyone’s surprise had not ended up sleeping together. This was more than a mild surprise, given Laura had enjoyed her freedom as a single girl more than a little lately.
Anyway, Laura declared enthusiastically that Brian would meet her later this afternoon for a coffee. Tamsin at that point had a throbbing headache and was most unpleasantly reminded that she had obviously been the loose one this time.
Laura had also finally and compellingly convinced Tam to meet her by shrieking repeatedly “come on Tamsin, don’t be a deadhead. You had sex with an incredibly hot guy and now stop pouting and meet me for brunch in an hour”
Her headache did not get any better when she thought about Laura who would surely tell her over and over again how wonderful Brian was. This - she was sure - would do nothing to help her get over last night and move on with life.
She felt an acute jolt of embarrassment when some of last nights pictures came flashing back and she was glad about the lack of witnesses as she felt her cheeks start to burn.
Tam let out a sigh of relief when Laura hung up, put down the phone and went straight back into the kitchen to fix that urgently needed coffee. After two cups, the caffeine started to kick in and she dressed in her favourite pair of jeans and a top that was looked good on her, but was low-key. A little makeup and she decided she looked exactly right…as in not to attract any attention.
Tamsin arrived at the coffee shop and Laura was already waiting for her, impatiently see-sawing her left leg up and down. She leaped up as soon as she discovered her friend walking through the door and started waving like a mad person. All Tamsin’s brain was able to come up with was ‘shit’.
Her headache came back with a vengeance and she cursed the drinks Laura and she had drowned before they made that fateful decision to move on to the club where she had met Gerry.
No. She would stop to think about all that. A halfway convincing smile plastered across her face she hugged her friend tightly, which was the cue for Laura to point out how Tamsin would destroy her carefully styled hairdo. Come to think of it, after she had a good look at her, Laura had obviously gone to great lengths to look her best without looking as if she had gone to great lengths to look great.
‘I need a coffee’ Tamsin managed to mumble and when she added ‘want anything?’, Laura rattled down a longish list that comprised coffee and something to eat but all those difficult names seemed to get lost in that fog in her brain immediately. Finally she managed to get it right, trudged back and was hit by the full force of Laura’s enthusiasm.
2 hours and 3 coffees later the two parted ways as Laura was about to meet Brian in 5 minutes in, ironically enough, another coffee shop which was nearly half an hour away.
Tamsin found herself wandering down the street while musing unhappily about the fact that Laura had rightly pointed out how surprising it was that while she, Laura that is, had resisted the temptation to dance the horizontal mambo, Tamsin had given it all away so easily. Especially Laura’s amused laughter had not precisely helped Tamsin’s mood to improve.
Tam realised that she was in no hurry to return to her flat. There was a restlessness that was mixed with tiredness and a dire need to find a diversion from all the awkward thoughts that kept racing in her mind. Shit, what had she been thinking!??? Shit, shit, SHIT!
Wandering aimlessly through a park, she noticed that happy couples and families seemed to be everywhere. But then she crossed path with a woman who first shouted at her husband and then at her quarrelling kids. These as a result started to scream on top of their lungs. She felt a grim satisfaction.
After some more wandering through the streets of London, she hopped onto a bus and from the upper deck watched tourists pool around the horse guards. They seemed never to get tired of taking a bazillion pictures and trying to make the horse guards lose their straight face.
When she got off again she walked towards Sloane Square and decided to check out the plays in the area and was lucky enough to get hold of a ticket for one of the hottest new shows in town. Ticket in her hand she decided to bridge the time in the nearby departments stores and boutiques.
Her mobile rang only a moment later “Hello baybee” the voice of Terence boomed into her ear “how do YOU do?” and without giving her the time to say more than “hi” went on “oy I’m bored SENSELESS…wanna meet up for a chat?”
A few minutes later they had agreed on going to the play together and for a drink before and dinner after the show. She was lucky and swapped her ticket for two seats next to each other and sat down on the steps in the afternoon sun, waiting for Terence. When her unengaged mind once again strayed to the past night the sick feeling in her stomach returned and the vast abundance of coffee made it all the worse.
Thankfully Terence soon saved her from her gloomy thoughts and she heard his voice from about a mile away. He was a proud, good-looking, openly gay graphic designer, who had enough friends to fill Cinema One of the Odeon on Leicester Square. She could not help but grin and it felt good to be enveloped in his strong hug. He patted her back and made strange humming noises that irritated Tam, but then she realised that she still held on to him and that he might want her to let him go.
He held her at an arms length and narrowed his eyes while studying her. After a moment he made a dramatic motion with both hands and exclaimed “darling I can SO tell something is wrong with you…” then added expertly “follow me honey’. In the Foyer he bat his eyelashes at the ticket desk guy and asked him in a grave tone that hinted towards terrible happenings - “where is the bar my friend…” and added in a whisper “…believe me…she needs it”. Having said that Terence gripped Tamsins arm and dragged her closer to the desk as if to demonstrate that only a bottle of Vodka would help in this grave case.
The ticket guy grinned widely and a moment later Terence dragged her down the stairs to the bar, where she let herself drop onto the nearest barstool. Terence’s attention was diverted by busily flirting with the cute bartender. She was not sure anymore whether eeting up with Terence had been such a good idea.
Terence handed her something that had a nasty neon green colour and was obviously supposed to be THE ‘In’ drink in London right now. Terence gave her a dramatic look and put an arm around her shoulder, looked straight into her eyes, let out a long-stretched sigh and instructed her “drown it sweetie…then you tell me everything…EVERY detail”.
She frowned and rolled her eyes but drowned the neon green liquid nonetheless in one gulp. Tamsin gasped as soon as the vicious mixture burned a fiery trail down her throat before it mixed with the coffee in her stomach.
The sick feeling in her stomach got worse but Terence had already ordered another round with a wink aimed at the bartender. He ignored her protest, rolled his eyes and she again drowned it.
Terence put his head onto his hand and blinked repeatedly at her, which was obviously meant to be encouraging. She sighed and her tongue was loosened by the alcohol that rapidly worked through her system. Terence listened in silence, his mouth gaping open, nodding repeatedly, obviously enthralled by her story.
After she had finished, he let out a squeak of delight “Oh my gawd! Darling, that is just SOOO not YOU….” and commenced to add dryly “Congratulations”.
Brilliant. Tam concluded that things were not exactly going to her favour. She excused herself and made a beeline to the loo. Even before her feet had hit the wooden floor, Terence was already chatting up the bartender again. The bathroom mirror greeted her with a gloomy version of her face and she splashed some water onto it, took a deep breath and straightened her clothes before returning to her friend. Terence was by now leaning over the counter and laughed at something the bar guy had said.
She plopped back down onto her stool and was relieved when a second later the bell was the sign for the guests to go into the auditorium. She had to drag Terence away from the bar and seal a deal that they would return for another drink after the play. Only then did he follow her willingly like an overgrown and lanky puppy.
They had good seats, the play was great and it was the first time on that day that she laughed full-heartedly. After its end, Terence chatted excitedly about one of the actors on stage who he thought was the cutest thing since Orlando Bloom.
Unfortunately his enthusiasm about that actor, did not let Terence forget about the bartender and he mercilessly dragged her down the stairs once more. The room was nearly overflowing with after-show guests.
Terence was mortally offended when he discovered that his bartender had no time for him, but his luck changed when the group of actors came in for a drink too. Terence immediately hopped off like an overjoyed, happy bunny to meet that actor he had drooled over during the play.
He took the time to stop midway and frantically propel his arms, which was obviously a sign for her to follow him. After deciding that she had had enough of standing next to him while he shamelessly flirted with every cute guy in near proximity, she pointed towards the toilets and went straight there.
She pushed open the door, found refugee in the nearest cubicle, closed the door and leaned her head against the cool material of the door. She had definitely had enough. It was time to leave and Terence was perfectly occupied anyway.
Once back in the hot, crowded and loud room her eyes wandered around searching for Terence. As soon as she had located him, she took a straight line through the laughing and chatting people.
Scanning the faces she stopped dead in her tracks when she saw a familiar face right in between where she stood and where Terence was chatting to several people. That familiar face was Gerry. But this was completely impossible. London had millions and millions and millions of inhabitants. No way. But just to be on the safe side, Tam decided to duck down low. She did not want to see him and he surely did not want to see her.
The ducking down turned out as a sub-optimal strategy. People stared curiously or with concern at her and she quickly faked looking for something she had lost. Cringing at this amateurish display, she crawled back into the opposite direction and hid behind a column.
Taking a deep breath she evaluated that A) she needed to get through to Terence and B) leave a.s.a.p. without being noticed by Gerry. Or maybe just plan B would do. She froze as she heard a voice that could only belong to one person ‘Taaaamsiiin...’ Oh god. No. She cursed under her breath. How could someone so completely lack reservation when moving in public?
She tried to lower her head and make her way out of the bar. She would rather explain herself to him later, but escape unseen.
Too late. Terence materialized in front of her oblivious to her desperate, pleading gaze and grabbed her arm, declaring that she had to meet his new friends. She tried to loosen his grip in vain. Once Terence was moving he seemed unstoppable.
Resignedly she noticed that their strange behaviour was enough to make absolutely everyone they passed look at them. Then her glance met surprised green-blue eyes boring into hers and she quickly directed her eyes to the floor.
At least they were about to reach the group of actors and theatre production crew. Terence introduced her excitedly to everyone, but soon continued to flirt with a guy next to him. She was trying to focus on what the person next to her talked about but could not get over the shock of meeting Gerry again. The guy next to her talked and talked and talked, oblivious to her absent-mindedness.
Things went from bad to worse when a group of newcomers was welcomed into the group and one of them was – how else could it be - Gerry. There was a sinking feeling in her stomach and she quickly turned back to Daniel (or was it Damien?) but he was busy smiling and motioning Gerry and his friends over to them. She saw Gerry move reluctantly into their direction, his face straight and unreadable.
For a moment she considered to simply turn and run. Her feet seemed unwilling to obey though and thus she stayed firmly planted to the spot. Two other guys were at Gerry’s side and Daniel, Damien or whatever…embraced Gerry and patted him onto his shoulder, then greeted the other two.
So she stood opposite Gerry, stared at the floor and remained as mute as he did. After a moment he opened his mouth, but in that precise moment Daniel/Damien had decided to politely introduce them. ‘Gerry meet Tamsin, Tamsin…Gerry’.
Gerry looked at Tamsin. He had not been able to believe his eyes when he had seen her in the crowd before. Then she was gone as suddenly as she had appeared. This led him to evaluate whether his mind was playing nasty tricks on him. He felt utterly confused when moments later she appeared in his field of vision again, being dragged along like a bag of potatoes by a guy that was as shrill as the whistle of a steam train.
But his real dilemma only emerged when she was precisely dragged into the group of people he and his friends had come to visit. He would obviously be confronted with her up close. Now they stood there opposite each other in such obvious uneasiness, that neither of them knew what to say.
Was this the way the universe got back at him?
Gerry’s friend tried keep the conversation going, but was confronted with two people who behaved rather…odd. But sure enough Gerry quickly recovered from the shock, was all easy smiles, chatting animatedly but spared no glance for Tamsin. She wouldn’t have noticed anyway, as she was plotting her escape from this whole mess with newfound vigour. She did not listen to a word Gerry said, but had she listened carefully, she would have discovered that he rambled on to fill the void, as he still felt uncomfortable about what had happened between them.
No brilliant plan evolved in Tamsin’s mind though. So the only logical thing to her seemed to say goodbye to no one in particular, turn on the spot and briskly walk away towards the green sign “exit” that seemed heaven. Taking two steps at a time she raced up the stairs and through the foyer, threw open the glass doors which posed the last obstacle between her and the street, raced down the few steps and stopped on the sidewalk, breathing heavily.
She felt surprisingly good now she had left, but hesitated for a moment unsure what to do about Terence. He would have been most likely too busy to notice her sudden escape. But then she heard the doors bang open and hastily turned around as there were quick steps coming down the stairs. A faint smile died on her lips as she faced Gerry, who advanced hesitantly down the last few steps and then stopped to look at her once more with a face void of emotion.
