Ada jumped as Gerard bounded down the stairs. ‘Jesus, you gave me a heart attack, what time did you get in last night Mister?’
’Late, I met a woman last night’ Gerard replied, opening the fridge and drinking from the milk bottle. For once Ada let that faux par go to digest this information, noting his smile and his sudden cheery disposition she decided to press a bit further.
’Where did you go?’
’Down the bottom of the garden’ he smiled.
’What?’ Ada spluttered, ‘She was down there?’
’Yeah, walking her dog, she didn’t realise anyone still lived here, then guess what.’
’What?’
’Your defying the game’ he frowned, ‘Then again you will never guess, she turns out to be the woman I saved from an assault a few months ago when I stayed at mums, and we have been writing to each other for months’ he laughed, ‘Can you believe that?’
’That is coincidental’ Ada agreed, ‘So what’s she like?’
’Beautiful’ he beamed, ‘funny, smart, stylish, sweet and …why are you looking at me like that?’
Ada was beaming, ‘No reason, your cereal is in the cupboard, I’m going shopping for the food, behave yourself’ she instructed, grabbing her coat and heading out of the front door, ‘Are you in for dinner?’
’No, I’m going to take Elizabeth out’
’Elizabeth, is that her name’
’Yes’ he felt his stomach turn over, and grinned, reaching up to pull the cupboard open, he checked his watch, it was 9am, now was too early to phone her. Was it?
Elizabeth laughed as the children ran in, some lingering back wanting their parents others running wildly to place their coats on their hangers. All of them holding a childish innocence and not realising that teacher seemed much happier today. It hadn’t escaped the notice of her assistant though.
’Your beaming today chuck’ she laughed, ‘Do anything special last night?’
’Not really’ Elizabeth laughed, ‘Walked the dog, had an early night’
’Well you look well on it’
Elizabeth was sure she was going to question further until one of the children stuck a crayon up his nose, and they ran to retrieve it.
By lunchtime she was on pins, he still hadn’t called. Something deep inside her told her not to fuss, he was certain to get in touch but the paranoid side was telling her he wasn’t interested, or that he was far too busy. Feeling decidedly sick, she walked around the playground smiling as the children ran around screaming each other’s names and singing silly songs. As she peered to her left she spotted a lone figure staring at her, her natural instinct was fear. Men didn’t hang around children’s playgrounds for nothing, then peering closer she recognised the figure. It was he.
Gerard’s palms were sweating as she walked over, he questioned why but shrugged it off as her smile reached him. Pulling his arm out from behind him he handed her the small bunch of flowers he had grabbed on his way here. Instinctively he wanted to make her smile, and giving her flowers would surely do that, but he worried whether the gesture was too suggestive. Perhaps she didn’t want his flowers, or his time, it was too late now anyway he was stood feeling stupid holding them over the wall to her, and she still hadn’t taken them, she was standing staring at him. Oh god, what had he done, he could feel his gut sinking.
‘Miss are those flowers for you?’ a voice bellowed, Gerard and Elizabeth dropped their trance to see a small 4 year old with a snotty nose staring up at them, ‘My dad brings mum flowers, she kisses him afterwards’ he smiled, proud to have spoken.
’That’s nice Dean, you go and play now’ Elizabeth tenderly instructed, before kneeling down and pulling out a tissue to wipe his nose.
Gerard dropped the flowers to his side and waited for the reaction, he was pleasantly surprised when she walked closer and leant over to him, leaving a peck on his cheek he felt himself blush as he handed the flowers toward her once more.
’Come on’ she laughed, taking them from him and leading him inside the school. Once inside he sat himself at a desk built for a four year old, wobbling slightly on the tiny chair he decided to stand up and lean, but the moment ot hide his idiocy had passed as he heard her laugh.
’Now Gerard, off the chairs. Behave yourself or I will call your mother’ she pointed her finger at him, like she were instructing one of the children, and pulled a smiled from him easily. ‘Now explain the flowers?’
’Well’ he muttered, scratching his head, ‘I saw them and they reminded me of you, so I got them, for you. I’m sorry’
Elizabeth threw her head back and laughed harder, ‘Don’t be sorry, they are beautiful, I love them, thank you.’
’Will you let me take you to dinner tonight?’ he asked cautiously, in his head he was crying out for him to shut up, telling himself he didn’t need to be involved, he didn’t need her or anyone else. But his heart defied that and tore through, breaking his will power and letting him ask her on a date.
’I don’t think that’s such a good idea’ she sighed, feeling her heart drop; everything had gone so well until that point. But it was clear he was heartbroken and she was nobody’s rebound, that wasn’t how she saw her first love.
’Why?’ he asked, but it sounded more of a whine than a question. Getting a grip of himself he suddenly felt foolish, had last night meant nothing but friendship to her, had she not thought about him all night as he had her? Had he made a stupid mistake once again?
’Your still in love, and I wont be used’ she replied, turning away from him he saw her hand reach to her face and wipe away a tear.
’Elizabeth, no’ he whispered.
’Yes’ she almost cried, ‘Look Gerard, I like you a lot, I have since you saved me. I would search through the junk mail every day to find your letter, I would stare at my phone wondering of you would text and after last night I dreamt of you and I together. Maybe I’m stupid but its not that simple. I’m not a rebound’ finally getting it all out of her system she breathed out.
Gerard shook his head and smiled, ‘You never would be, you’re too special for that’
’You don’t even know me’ she cried, feeling herself well up, Damn the emotion she cursed, still clutching her flowers, she dared not move as he walked toward her and placed his arms on hers.
’I know you are sweet, and funny, and beautiful. I know you have your coffee white with 2 sugars, I know you cant ride horses, your awful at badminton and you hate, above all else, you hate opera.’ He smiled, lifting a hand to stroke her cheek, ‘I learnt that last night, and I want to know more, is that so wrong?’
Elizabeth stared into his eyes for what felt like an eternity, maybe it was longer. When the bell rang, and the children poured back into the classroom they were still stood, clutching each other and staring, neither one saying a word.
’So they are your flowers misses?’ a boy called out, his nose once more dripping.
Elizabeth nodded, and stepped backwards, turning from him once more, and placing them on the side, motioning for him to follow her, she lead him outside and stared at him again.
’Lets just go to dinner?’ he asked, ‘Just me and you, tonight, we can talk, we can laugh, we can eat pineapple anything!’
Elizabeth smiled at his ridiculous suggestion and nodded, her heart screaming yes and her mind screaming no, she decided to have one more night with him, and then see where it left them.
Gerard nodded, finally feeling his heartbeat return to normal, ‘I’ll collect you at 8?’ he asked, relieved when she nodded. Placing his hands in his pockets he walked off back down the corridor and out of the building.
Elizabeth stared after him, and tried to ignore her heartbeat, that was intense. Walking back into the classroom she saw that her assistant had taken control and had them all playing quietly, her eyes shoe however and Elizabeth knew she was about to be plagued with questions, until she explained who the mysterious handsome man was.
