July 8th 2004. Bethnal Green, London.
‘Kim if you don’t get out of that bathroom pronto I’m coming in after you, naked or not naked! Shouted Colleen outside Kim’s spacious bathroom, she had agreed to help her do her hair and make up for the premier, and it was all Colleen could do to try and organise an extremely nervous Kim.
‘I’m coming!! Keep your brightly coloured hair on!’ Shouted Kim as she wrapped her long hair in a towel and threw on her warm terry cloth bathrobe before exiting the bathroom and nearly falling over Colleen in the process.
‘Just because you know emerald green hair would never look as good on you as it does on me there’s no need to keep drawing attention to it’ said Colleen jokingly.
‘I’d rather not look like someone’s sneezed on my head thanks’ Kim shot back with a wink and a cheesy grin.
‘Oh shut up and get in the chair’ Colleen said, smacking Kim on the bum as she passed her.
After nearly two hours of painting, pinning, plucking and pulling Kim was ready. Colleen had made the suggestion that she wear the dress she got to keep from her stint on the catwalk at London fashion week, all too well remembering how Gerry had looked at her in it. She had also straightened out Kim’s natural curls and added hair extensions to give it a little extra length, and done her make up so flawlessly Kim looked as if she was hardly wearing any.
‘You look amazing; he isn’t going to know what’s hit him when he sees how you look you know! What time is he due here? Asked Colleen as she was packing up the remainder of her extensive hair and make up kit and watched as Kim eyed her reflection in her full length mirror.
‘I’ve got another 45 minutes to wait yet’ said Kim as she smiled at her reflection, suitably impressed, and turned back to where Colleen was packing away her things.
‘Well if you want me to wait ill wait, I’ve got a table booked at The Ivy for 9pm so I can go straight from here and just leave my stuff in the car if you like?’ asked Colleen kindly, thinking that Kim may not want to be sat waiting nervously alone.
‘Ill be fine Colleen, I don’t want to take up your whole Friday! Thanks for asking though’ said Kim as she padded through barefoot to her living room and carefully sat down in her big leather armchair.
After Colleen had left Kim immediately regretted not taking her up on her offer to stay. She was so nervous her hands where shaking; not just about seeing Gerry, but having the attention of the worlds press on her would also be daunting enough. She got up and fetched a glass from the cabinet, walked into the kitchen and removed the bottle of Stolichnaya she always kept in her freezer and poured herself a large measure, which she drank in one. And then she followed that by another before going back into her living room and chain smoking four cigarettes. Kim loved cigarettes and alcohol.
Just as Kim had started to settle and her nerves had subsided slightly the door buzzer went off like a claxon.
‘Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!!!’ Kim cursed to herself as her heart battered itself against her chest once more. She flew back into her bedroom, spritzed on some more perfume, grabbed her little bag and slipped on her very new favourite pair of Jimmy Choo mules, switched all her lights off and was out the door. As she approached the limo waiting for her in the courtyard of her posh flat the driver got out and ran round to open the door for her.
‘Good evening’ Gerry greeted her with a little kiss on the hand as she got in. ‘You look as lovely as ever’ he continued as Kim sat beside him and the limo gently pulled away, ‘I do believe I have seen this somewhere before though’ Gerry added as he gently tugged the side of Kim’s long sea green silk dress, ‘I thought it was the biggest sin in the world for an actress to wear the same thing twice?.
‘Technically it is, but I don’t give a shit’ said Kim with a silly smile. ‘And when a dress is this nice you just can’t not wear it again’ she finished; taking note of the fact he looked so gorgeous her eyes had nearly fallen out when she had seen him.
Gerry silently agreed with her. It was all he could do without saying something he shouldn’t. He was more than pleasantly surprised that she had worn it again; he truly never forgot how beautiful she had looked in it the first time around.
When they both stepped out onto the red carpet at Leicester square, the crowd went crazy. There where about 300 plus members of the public flocked around the entrance as well as many members of the press. Gerry looked down at Kim, smiled and grabbed her hand in his before they began their ascent. As soon as they reached the photographers they heard their names called in every direction. Kim began to feel a little dizzy turning this way and that and was glad that a security man came along and ushered them away from the press and their many questions, the most common of which was asking if her and Gerry where ‘finally letting their relationship go public’. The media had been circulating rumours about them for as long as they had been friends. It seemed in the crazy world that was celebrity, a man and a woman couldn’t just be friends and they had had every single rumour possible created about them, all of which where obviously untrue.
‘Just keep smiling and don’t give them the satisfaction of an answer’ whispered Gerry into Kim’s ear just before they had been rescued by said security man. They spent a good half an hour chatting to fans and posing for pictures, Gerry even kindly spoke to one girls mother on her mobile phone and made the girl in question and all her friends cheer by telling her what a pretty daughter she had before handing the phone back as he and Kim where ushered inside.
As Kim sat back and waited for the film to start she chatted with Gerry and a few of the other actors before all fell silent in the auditorium and the film started. Throughout the film Kim was engrossed; if Gerry tried to whisper anything to her he would have to tap her at least twice before he got any reaction. At the end Kim unashamedly cried, it was such a moving piece of work she couldn’t help but let the hot slivery tears splash down her cheeks. Gerry noticed her cry and felt a lump rise in his throat; he was touched that his performance had moved her so much. He gently took her hand in his and gave it a squeeze, she squeezed back and leant over to kiss his cheek, also whispering ‘I could watch that a hundred times and still love it as much as I do now’.
The party that went of afterwards was fantastic. Kim and Gerry danced, chatted, and socialized with as many people as they could, all the time never leaving the others side for more than a few minutes at a time until Gerry made his excuses to Kim and the group of people they where in conversation with, stating that a very good upcoming Columbian movie producer wanted to talk with him about possible future projects. He said he wouldn’t be too long and gave Kim’s hand a firm squeeze as he left as if to emphasize his point more to her than anyone else. Kim sat and continued her talking with the rest of the group, and if she was honest was having a great time even without Gerry there, just knowing that he was there with her was enough, even though neither had confessed their feelings yet Kim felt as if she had maybe taken that first small step out of the realm of friendship, into something that could possibly turn into more. When Kim looked at her watch she realized Gerry had been gone for well over an hour. She decided to go to the toilet and then have a discreet look around for him, she didn’t want to go storming up to him and whoever he was talking to and demand his attention, so she decided to just walk past and catch his eye.
After busying herself in the ladies toilets, combing her hair and re doing her make up she set out to find Gerry. What she found wasn’t the nicest sight in the world by any stretch of the imagination. She found him in a dark corner, sat next to a leggy blonde in a very short and glittery dress, hanging on her every word. Kim made a few steps backward and hid behind one of the large ornamental trees decorating the venue and watched as the blonde woman patted Gerry’s thigh to emphasize whatever she was telling him and then watched him give the back of her hand a little pat before she saw the woman drape a heavily jewelled arm around his wide shoulders. Kim felt like the biggest fool on earth. He had brought her to the premier and then dropped her as soon as he could to go talk to his mystery blonde woman, rather than the lie he had used about the Columbian movie producer.
Kim could feel tears beginning to sting her eyes, so she turned and walked away and quietly left the event alone. One of the security men arranged for a car to be sent round for her immediately and opened the door for her when it had pulled up at the front of the event. Even he looked very puzzled to the fact that she was leaving alone rather than with Gerry, but it was nothing compared to the confusion whirling around in Kim’s head at that moment in time.
When she arrived home Kim put her phone straight onto the answering machine and turned her mobile off. When she had first reached into her bag for it she had half hoped that there would be a message from Gerry asking where she had gone, but no such luck. She took off her dress and pulled out the heavy old chest she kept under her bed, unlocked it and threw the dress inside in a crumpled heap, then piled things on top of it so it wasn’t visible. She shut the chest with a loud bang and threw herself onto her bed in floods of tears, totally distraught. She couldn’t even work out why he had asked her to go in the first place just to ditch her in favour of this other woman. She sat and began to think of what Colleen had told her, and cried even more because she knew Colleen would never lie about something like this; she just didn’t have one single spiteful bone in her body. Kim felt it all circle in her head at lightening speed, so fast that she couldn’t keep up with her own thoughts so she just cried and cried until she could cry no more and eventually drifted off to sleep, still in her underwear and on top of the duvet.
In the morning when she felt she had cried all she could she was confronted by another uncomforting sight which proved that thought wrong. She had gone out to fetch a few bits and pieces from her local convenience store and seen pictures of Gerry leaving the event with his blonde woman all over the papers. Feeling hot tears begin to prickle in the corners of her eyes once more she paid her kindly local newsagent Mr. Khan, who could tell she was upset and looked at her with big sympathetic brown eyes, and fled the shop back to her flat.
She stayed in her flat for the next four days. With pretty much all of the post production work on ‘Professional Lies’ all done she had one week off before filming started, and she decided she didn’t want to leave her flat again until that date. So that’s where she stayed, and completely cut off all communication with the outside world, cancelling various things through Lucy before she disappeared, and then favouring the company of the 100 cigarettes and 3 bottles of vodka she had brought to ease her pain. The only conclusion Kim could reach over the situation was that simply something better had caught Gerry’s eye. It was the only thing that could explain his interest one minute and then lack of it the next. That was, Kim thought, if at least Gerry hadn’t just told Colleen to shut her up, tell her what she wanted to hear and work the rest out later of course.
‘No, no, no, that’s not like Gerry’ Kim thought to herself, which then distressed her even more because then she realized it would be the former conclusion she had reached; something better had come along. Kim grimaced and held her head in her hands as she remembered how strikingly beautiful the blonde woman was; long lustrous flaxen hair, deep set brown eyes and golden honey toned skin.
‘Much more beautiful than me’ Kim whispered aloud to herself before opening her first bottle of Stolichnaya and pouring it into her nearby glass with a little sad sigh.
Kim couldn’t remember the last time she had been drunk for three days in a row, and by now couldn’t even remember which days they actually where. She had been locked away in her flat since she had seen those pictures all over the papers. Her phone had rung more times that she cared to remember, but she just ignored all her calls that she had put straight to the answer phone, and didn’t even bother checking the messages. She just wanted to be alone.
As she sat in her scruffy old jeans and a tight fitting black t shirt, the same outfit she had been wearing for the last three days, she dreaded the start of filming. She knew there was no way she could get out of her part now, having signed the contract ages ago, so she was stuck. It was the first time since she had known him that she wasn’t looking forward to seeing Gerry at all, and as she sat in her vodka haze she cried for what must have been the 100th time. She wanted to drink more to block it out but after going into the kitchen to fetch her booze she realized she had run out. Cursing, Kim threw the empty bottles in the bin and as she did caught sight of her reflection in the mirror. She looked like shit. Her hair was knotted and messy, her face was pale and gaunt and she just generally looked ill.
She decided for the first time in days to go for a shower and sort herself out a bit, after all she couldn’t just sit there and wallow in her own self pity for the rest of her life. It was then she told herself it could have been a lot worse. She could have actually been in a relationship with Gerry and to have that happen then would have been a million times worse! As it was she didn’t have a claim in the world over Gerry, and when she realized this she felt even more foolish for mourning the loss of someone who wasn’t even hers in the first place.
After she was freshly showered and dressed in clean clothes Kim busied herself by tidying her flat, which had taken on the appearance of a squat in the short time she had been hiding out in there. After everything was clean and tidy Kim felt a little better, then the mental image of Gerry with the blonde flashed back into her head and she sighed once more before flopping down on the sofa. But before she could sit and let her thoughts carry her away back into her perpetual misery there was a knock at her front door.
‘I think it’s about time you came out of there Anne Frank’ said Gerry as soon as Kim opened the door. She stood there mute, not meeting his eyes.
‘Well, are you going to invite me in and tell me why you have done a disappearing act then or am I going to have to guess?’ asked Gerry.
‘Come in, I think we need to talk’ said Kim as she opened the door wider to let him past her.
‘Yes, it seems we do’ he said as he made his way into her flat.
