Beginnings of Revenge
If there was one thing Kat was scared of, it was riding in any vehicle that Edge was driving. She could have sworn they were going to die a grand total of nine times since they took off from the hotel, meeting up with other wrestlers for their Paintball match.
Edge kept reassuring them that they had nothing to worry about, that he had learned from the best.
“Demolition drivers don’t count Edge!” Jericho had white knuckles from grasping Kats jacket, he couldn’t figure out why he agreed to let Edge drive in the first place. Benoit was almost in tears since he was in the passengers seat, getting a better view of the narrow misses they had with Edge at the wheel.
Kat looked at Jericho and hissed, “If we die, I blame you!” it didn’t help that Edge had the radio on full blast, adding to the chaos and panic his comrades were forced to endure.
Jericho only slunk down in his seat, not wanting to witness any more potential crashes in the making. The seatbelt made it a little hard to do, but with a little maneuvering he was resting his head against Kat’s leg and praying for their safety.
In Kats mind they couldn’t have gotten there any sooner, they all through themselves from the car and tried to get as far away from it as possible. Edge, however, was still grinning broadly as he came strolling over to the trio.
They quickly shook off the effects as they went and gave their names, being let in and meeting with an impressive group of wrestlers. They were all talking and joking around as the foursome joined them, being welcomed by almost everyone as they joined in the fun.
For Kat it was almost overwhelming. Some of the people she could only dream of meeting were there and welcomed her like she were an old friend. Spike Dudley giving her a very warm and unexpected hug while brothers D-Von and Bubba Ray glared at Spike coldly, receiving a stinging slap on the back from John Cena, Chavo Guerrero kissing her on the cheek and getting a real kiss from his uncle Eddie, which made Kat turn twelve shades of red.
She was introduced to a few more people and soon the group was complete as they began to split into teams.
As they headed into the playing field, Kat knew she was going to have a blast.
Apparently Chris Benoit knew something the rest of them didn’t, as he chose to drive them back after the Paintball massacre. The team they were on came out the winners, how this was determined was a mystery to Kat.
Sure enough, as they were heading back to the hotel, much smoother and prayer free, when Benoit told them about dinner, courtesy of Kurt Angle and Eric Bischoff. Edge and Jericho asked him why he hadn’t told us till now, while Kat was wondering if a certain Big Red Machine would show up.
While Edge and Jericho were arguing that they don’t have the attention span of a goldfish and could have remembered the dinner, Kat tried to figure out what she would wear. Not that she had much to chose from, and a dress was just out of the question. She decided the usual ‘dress clothes’ would be good enough, and agreed that Edge and Jericho didn’t have the attention span of a goldfish.
More like a field mouse.
Neither Edge nor Jericho spoke to them for the rest of the trip back to the hotel, making sure Benoit and Kat were the last to take showers and hiding their clothes from them as their real punishment.
They were quick to give them back when Kat and Benoit threatened that when they caught them, would tie them down and make them look like the ugliest likenesses of Polly Pocket ever known to man. Considering the people they pissed off recently, Edge and Jericho knew they could carry out such a threat and reluctantly returned their clothes.
They all called a truce and finished getting ready without fear of things being stolen or getting pelted with random, and heavy, objects.
This time Kat volunteered to drive, with Benoit in the back seat giving directions as they arrived safely and joined the waiting party of wrestlers. Edge was sure to stay clear of Evolution as Jericho did the same with Tomko.
They made their way towards Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio, where it was Kat’s turn to give Eddie a kiss. John Cena was soon to join them as the group talked and had a few laughs, joking about the paintball game and some of the recent wrestling matches.
A hush fell over the crud and Kat turned to see what the silence was about, and standing in the doorway was none other then the Undertaker himself. It was rare to see Undertaker at a social gathering like this, which made many people wonder just what he was doing here.
This only made her think about Kane again, wondering what would happen if he did show up now that Undertaker was here as well. The brothers weren’t on the best of terms at the moment, and she would hate to see things erupt into another feud between them.
Undertaker only went and stood by himself, people slowly resuming the conversations before the silence hit. Kat watched him for a while, catching his gaze once and watching him carefully. He only nodded to her, and she returned the gesture before turning her attention back to their groups many conversations.
It was only a matter of minutes before they were all seated around a very large table, easily able to seat their large crew with room to spare. Kat was sat next to Cena with Jericho and Eddie right after him, the seat to Kats left was empty and Rob Van Dam was in the seat after it.
How they knew Kane would show up, much less sit next to her, was something that worried Kat only slightly. It was something else that really surprised her; people thought the pair to be close enough that Kane would seek out her company if he did indeed showed up.
If.
True, she was one of the few people he ran into regularly that he actually got along with. Yet she found it hard to believe that he would, given the option, chose to be in her company. She wasn’t sure he would tolerate the rumors that were already starting to spread about them, although for now they didn’t seem to bother him at all.
It was almost as if he enjoyed them to some degree, if anything he seemed to find them amusing. Kat didn’t know whether that was a good or bad sign, but it did calm her nerves a bit. At least he wouldn’t go on an all out rampage. Well, not over this anyway.
Kat looked around the table at the surprising amount of wrestlers, even some of the divas showed up. Trish Stratus was accompanied by Tyson Tomko, as always, and Stacy Keibler was awfully close with The Hurricane. Dawn Marie was, for a reason Kat couldn’t come up with, sitting next to Chavo Guerrero who was next to his father, Chavo Classic.
Her gaze traveled down to the two men who organized this little gathering. Kurt Angle, former GM of SmackDown!, was looking rather pale. Kat noticed him looking worriedly at Eddie Guerrero, who through the ex-boss icy gazes before returning to his conversation with Chris Benoit.
Edge and Jericho were looking rather suspicious, talking quietly amongst themselves and making Kat wonder what they were planning this time. Whatever it was, she knew it would most likely get them into trouble. Which was fine with her, since it guaranteed her a match with someone.
Eric Bischoff was almost beaming with pride, the gathering had gone exactly the way he planned it.
Incident free.
Even though the events of the week had angered the vengeful GM, he seemed to be having a good time. He didn’t even bother with threatening stares or glances at Chris Jericho, and Chris never even acknowledged the GM’s presence.
Evolution seemed to be in a deep conversation with the elder Dudley brothers and JBL, the details of which Kat couldn’t pick out. The Dudley’s somehow could tell they were being watched, and threw Kat a quick glance before informing Batista and Randy.
She was glad to be on good terms with two of the members from Evolution, who were real sweethearts when they weren’t with Hunter or Ric. They grinned at her and she rolled her eyes, knowing she was most likely going to get thrown in the pool. Again.
Their drinks came and she was quick to drink down half of it, for some reason she always drank more then she ate. As she put the glass down she glanced around the table to find Undertaker, who was at the far end drinking his beer in silence.
He captivated her just as much as his younger brother did, how they could be so alike yet so different. The Phenom was one of the harden veterans that she had nothing but respect for, the complete opposite of her feelings towards The Nature Boy.
Kat felt a light nudge in her ribs, turning to meet the amused grin of Cena as he knew what had held her attention.
“Jericho is right, you are a sucker for the tall, dark and psychotic ones. Don’t tell me you’re over your little thing for Kane and moved on to his brother. ” John looked over at Undertaker, whom he also had a lot of respect for. Kat was sure that Undertaker respected Cena as well, he had a hard enough time taking down the young thug and seemed impressed with the heart and determination the kid showed.
Kat nudged Cena back, “At least it hasn’t gotten me killed yet, and Kane and I are just...friends. I think. He hasn’t tried to injure me yet, so that must be a good sign.”
She had to admit, the last part was still a bit blurry to her. They were just friends, weren’t they? Granted she did love him, but she never thought he would feel the same way for her.
Cena rolled his eyes as he finished taking a drink, “Yeah...just friends...” he placed his glass on the table and glanced at Kat with a smirk. He motioned towards the entrance to the room and what Kat saw nearly made her choke on her drink.
Being escorted by a waiter was none other then Kane, a very good-looking Kane. His black pants went well with his red long sleeved shirt, which was buttoned nearly to the top and left partially open to expose part of his chest. His heavy boots pulled the look together as, once again, silence overcame the room and all eyes were on Kane.
Kane barely paid attention to them as he took the empty seat beside Kat, glancing at his brother half-heartedly and ordering a drink from the same waiter who brought him in. Kat felt another nudge from Cena, who was still trying to hide the smile on his face as he took another drink.
Kane looked over at Bischoff and ignored the whispers being issued about the table.
“I want you to schedule a match between me and Matt Hardy...” Kane’s gaze was completely focused on Bischoff, who looked down at the table as he thought over the request. It was a couple minutes before Bischoff met Kane’s gaze and sighed.
“Before I agree to this, I need to know what you have in mind...which we will discuss in private.” Eric stood up and moved to the door, waiting for Kane to join him as everyone watched them. Kane joined Bischoff and the two left to discuss the conditions of the match, the table erupting in speculation of just what Kane has in store for Matt.
Their meeting was short, lasting no more then an hour at the most. Both men came back in and sat down in their previous seat, Kat looking up a Kane as the big man sat beside her.
“Did he agree or what?” From their current expressions Kat couldn’t tell how the meeting went, neither man displayed any signs of what might have spoken in their company.
Kane reached for his drink and whispered to her, “Yeah. He agreed.” Kat didn’t know whether to be happy for Kane or to be worried. She didn’t bother to ask about the match stipulations, if she really had the urge to know she would hunt down Eric later.
“Not curious about what kind of match I have planned?” the question startled Kat out of her thoughts, making her focus her attention on Kane once again.
She shrugged, “I wasn’t sure if you would tell me, or would chose to keep it a surprise...”
Kane gave a weak smile at the remark and took a drink, looking at his brother over the rim of his glass and giving a small growl. Just what was The Phenom doing here...Kane had a reason for showing up but his brother wasn’t a social person.
He pushed his brother from his mind, not wanting it to ruin his small accomplishment for the night. His revenge was already starting to play out in his favor, and he would not let anything ruin it.
Kane turned his attention back to Kat, one of the few people he could tolerate and have a decent time talking to. “You’re right, I am going to keep it a surprise.” He smiled mischievously at her and was rewarded with a small growl of annoyance.
The rest of the night went smoothly, much to Kats enjoyment. She enjoyed a conversation with Kane and they even had a few laughs, getting odd glances from some of the wrestlers. Cena kept eyeing the pair with a pleased look, which meant he was going to torment her about Kane being her boyfriend every time they met.
Soon they were all outside, some leaving while others working out plans to get together later in the week.
Eddie, Cena and Benoit were doing just that, not that the others really minded. Edge and Jericho were still finalizing whatever plan they had thought up, one of the few things they stayed focused on for more then 30 min.
Kat was getting a little restless and told them she was going to go walk around, Kane already gone and she didn’t feel like starting a conversation with someone else.
She started off at a quick sprint, which soon turned into an all out run. Thankfully there weren’t many people on the sidewalk, so the risk of running over someone was slim to none.
It wasn’t long before she calmed down, coming to a stop and looking up at the full moon. She stretched slightly and worked the stiffness out of her back and shoulders, cracking the joints as she leaned against the mouth of an alley.
“It’s a bad idea to wander off on your own...” Kat turned around quickly to stare up at the one person you never want to meet in a dark alley; Undertaker. She backed up a bit and sighed, the only other person able to startle her that badly was Kane.
They were definitely brothers.
Kat watched him carefully, slightly curious as to why he bothered to speak with her. Undertaker stepped out of the shadows slightly, leaning against the wall with his gaze to the ground. He looked over at her and nodded, “You seem quite taken with my little brother...”
She didn’t know what to say to that. It annoyed her to some degree that he seemed to regard them as something more then friends. It would be different if Kane had the same feelings towards her, yet all they have done is had a couple conversations.
It wasn’t like they had sex.
“We’re...friends...if that’s what you’re trying to get at, not a couple...even though people seem to have taken quite a liking to the idea...” Kat growled slightly, her annoyance was clear in her voice.
Undertaker only shook his head, “I didn’t mean to offend you...actually, I wanted to ask you something...” He was watching Kat carefully, if what the others said about her was true...then maybe...
“Ask me...what exactly?” He had gained her full attention now. It wasn’t like the Undertaker to ask favors. Kat knew it had something to do with Kane, a few possibilities raced through her mind as she waited for him to answer.
He stood up straight and sighed.
“I want you to look after my brother for me. He seems to trust you somewhat, and our relationship has long since ended. I can’t protect him anymore, but you can.” Kat knew he was being sincere, he did really care for Kane after all.
It took her a moment to reply, “Alright. As a favor, I’ll look after Kane.” The annoyance had since disappeared from her voice as she agreed to his request.
Undertaker closed his eyes and turned back into the alley, vanishing just as quickly as he appeared.
He gave her one last message, “He needs someone he can trust Kat...don’t make me regret this...”
With those last words he left her in the dark, leaving her to think about this last piece of information.
Trust.
Kat hoped she could live up to his words.
