“We’re going to talk about this” he told her, walking back in and shutting the door.
“M-My exam” she hadn’t completely processed what he had just done.
“I’m sure they’ll let you re-do it” he carelessly assumed.
“You Fucking bastard!” She screamed, marching out of the room.
He followed behind her, grabbing her hand.
“I cant believe you did that!” she tried to pushed him away from her, but he still held onto her firmly.
“Let’s talk about it” he calmly told her “I had to make you listen to me”
“FUCK YOU!” she screamed, tears sprinting down her cheeks.
She then ran over to the door, pulling it open.
He reached for her, when she opened it. But instead of fully making it out, she ran into someone.
Brandon.
She looked up at him, and when she saw the confused expression on his face, she broke down into tears pushing past him.
He now looked over at Michael, staring behind him at Claire who now vanished around a corner.
“We had an argument” Michael nonchalantly stated in the midst of Brandon giving him a serious, questioning look.
He didn’t wait for any other explanation, he quickly turned in the same direction as Claire, going after her.
A few minutes later Brandon finally caught up with her, in the front of her building, crouched over the broken pieces of her laptop.
He carefully approached her, watching as she bit her lip from crying more than she already had, trying to piece it back together in despair.
She finally dropped the pieces, resting her head against her knees, cradling her legs.
“Cupcake, what happened?”
“Brandon” she immediately reached up, allowing him to pull her to her feet properly.
When she stood firmly on the ground, he noticed a small pout form at her cherry lips. He instantly recognized it.
Claire wasn't keen on the idea of shedding tears, but when she did, she usually pouted first, something he found undeniably adorable even if he would never let her know.
“All my hard work, it’s gone” she finally looked up at him.
“What do you mean? How did you’re laptop end up out here?”
She shook her head, beginning to tear up again.
“It’s alright. Shh, come here” he pulled her close.
“What am I gonna do?” she whispered.
“Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out. We always do.” he encouraged while rubbing her back as she continued to weep.
More than he was willing to admit, her tears weighed heavy on his heart.
“Sometimes he’s such a jerk” she sniffled moving away after some minutes.
“What did he do?” Brandon placed his hands onto her shoulders, deigning himself slightly to view her eye level.
She was instantly ready to tell him, but looking into his eyes, she knew Brandon would kill him, not to mention the rest of guys if they caught word that he purposely threw her laptop over the balcony, deliberately making her fail the last step to her career.
“He-He accidentally made me push it over.” she immediately looked down.
“Claire…you were doing your exam on the balcony?” She still wouldn’t look up.
He knew Claire would never be doing something as important as that nonchalantly on a balcony.
She merely nodded.
“Why wont you at me” He asked seriously, and for a moment she faltered, avoiding the question.
“I’m gonna go see if I can contact the head of my department…”
“Why are you lying to me?” he questioned.
“I’m not, I’m really not” she softly told him.
“Claire, what the fuck is going on here? Is it me? Did I do something why you’re acting so differently around me lately?”
She didn’t answer.
“Claire!” she shook her faintly.
“Don’t touch me!” she artlessly shouted, pulling out of his grip. “Listen, just go on your stupid tour with your stupid friends and leave me alone!”
The look on Brandon’s face alone made her want to cry all over again, but no. She had to do this.
“What is going on with you?” he started to respond, stung.
This was far too out of character for her.
“I just think we need some space, okay?”
“Space?”
She struggled to think up an apology, an explanation. But each one she devised sounded more lame, more inadequate than the next.
It was like breaking someone’s heart and offering them a band-aid.
“You’ll be gone, so it wont matter anyway”
tears formed at her eyes once again.
“Is everything okay with you and Michael?” he wasn’t yelling at her, and this drove her mad, she needed some sort of counterattack in order for this to work.
“It would be better if my best wasn’t in the picture as much as he is”
They both remained concentrated in one another’s eyes.
Finally he broke the silence by dropping his gaze from her, telling her
“Alright. If that is what you want then I will leave you alone. It’s just poignant that we’re losing one another in something you cant make me understand.” He then reached into his pocket pulling out a black string with a silver ancient-looking design on it. Brandon, took her hand placing the necklace inside.
“That’s why I came by so soon after I called. You gave it to me for out first performance, and I’ve carried it ever since. I thought it may have helped you with your exam, so...” he trailed off.
She looked down, undeniably allowing her tears to consume her.
What else could he do? Brandon had honestly tried, he didn't know what else to say to her.
Finding himself at a loss for words, he managed to tell her
“Take care of yourself, Claire”
With that, he turned around, stepping past pieces of the laptop without giving her so much as her second glance.
“Come back” she whispered inaudibly.
