Gerard was livid and fuming when I entered the bus. Frank was talking to him, trying to calm him down. The first thing I noticed as Gerard paced the living room floor was his bloody hands. They were cut up pretty bad from beating on Adam’s face. But I didn’t think I would be able to take care of them for him as angry as he seemed at the time.
“He fuckin’ deserved it Frank! The fuckin’ bastard shouldn’t treat people that way!” Gerard yelled and ran his hand through his hair. That’s when I noticed his bloody lip and nose. My stomach lurched. He was hurt pretty bad. All I wanted was to clean him off. I wanted to calm him down myself. But Frank finally managed to get him to sit down on the sofa. I sat on the arm of Mikey’s chair and stared at the floor. Mikey rubbed my back reassuringly. I looked down at him and smiled, letting him know I was okay. Gerard had his head laid back on the sofa, his eyes closed and his brow furrowed deeply. Frank just shrugged and shook his head. He seemed to be the only one concerned about being kicked off the tour. The rest of the guys acted like they were glad Gerard beat the shit out of Adam. That made me feel good; like someone cared about my feelings for once. Frank disappeared into the bathroom and Bob and Ray decided to take a walk. Mikey realized Gerard wasn’t going to start talking anytime soon, so he got up and wandered outside too. I got up and sat beside Gerard, looking down at his hands.
“Hey,” I said softly. He roused up from his thoughts and opened his eyes. He looked at me with such a plethora of emotions, I didn’t know which one he actually meant for me to see in him. “I told you I shouldn’t stay here with you guys. It’s only going to cause problems. And if something were to happen and you got canned from this tour…”
“We’re not going to get canned. Worse things have happened on this tour in the past. We’ve been doing it for years. Frank just has his ass on his shoulders.”
“I heard that,” Frank called out from the bathroom.
“Yeah, yeah,” Gerard answered back, shooing his hand towards the bathroom and rolling his eyes. Then he winced as he realized how bad his hand hurt. He examined them both, and saw the cuts and blood covering his knuckles.
“You should clean those up. Do you mind?” I suggested that I take care of them. I got up and grabbed a towel from the kitchenette before he could protest and ran cold water over it. I brought it back to the sofa and Gerard sat up and turned to face me. I took his left hand first and began to gently wipe the blood away. He inhaled with a hiss, wincing at the sting. I tried to be as careful as I could.
“You need to wrap your knuckles in gauze or something to keep dirt out. There are some pretty deep gashes on them.” Gerard watched me clean his other hand up as well and then rinse the towel in the sink. I came back to him and focused on his face. He was already starting to develop a black eye, and he had a busted lower lip and a bloody trail exuding from his right nostril. I brought the towel up to his face and began wiping the blood away. He jerked his head away momentarily when I touched his bottom lip.
“Jesus,” he said, getting the full effect of the pain.
“I’m sorry,” I said quietly, moving on to another area.
“I’m gonna look like hell at the show today,” he said, looking at me as I cleaned him up. I caught his gaze in mine for a brief moment and saw how much softer his expression had gotten.
“Well isn’t that what you sing about anyway?” I tried to joke and lighten the mood a bit.
“I guess so. Some of the songs at least.”
“Then you’ll fit right in. And you won’t have to wear makeup to achieve the desired effect.” He cracked a half smile, and then grunted in pain again. He started feeling his face, and realized how swollen he was becoming.
“Fuck! My lip is huge! Dammit!” He sighed and laid his head back again. I got up and rinsed the blood-soaked towel once more and put it in the dirty towel basket.
“I’m not worth getting injured over,” I said, fetching a bottle of water from the refrigerator. I sat down next to Gerard again and took a long drink.
“Do you want some?” I offered him some cold water. He nodded and took the bottle from me. He drank fully, and swished the last mouthful around before swallowing. I took the bottle back and drank another swig. Just then, Frank came out of the bathroom and happened to glance out of the window above our heads.
“Hey, I think someone called the cops man.” I went into an internal panic. I stood up and looked at Frank, horrified.
“What?” I said, starting to move toward the door.
“No! Stay here Jordyn. You’ll only make it worse. Adam is out there talking to the cops now. If he sees you, there’s no telling what he might say or do.” I knew Frank was probably right, but it didn’t help my wanting to go outside anyway. Gerard turned over onto his knees and looked out the window behind the sofa. A police officer was talking to Adam. There was some other guy with them that Gerard didn’t recognize. I went over and knelt on the sofa beside Gerard and looked out for myself.
“Do you know who that is?” He asked.
“No. Do you?” He shook his head. Adam was very animated in telling the cop whatever he was saying. The cop was just nodding every now and again. Then Adam pointed to the bus we were on and the cop looked over at the window. Gerard and I both ducked out of instinct. We slowly rose back up and saw the cop walking off. Adam ran his hand through his hair and started talking to the mystery guy that was there. The guy held up his hands and shook his head. Then he turned around and walked away. Adam threw his hands in the air and rolled his eyes. He walked away, looking pissed as hell.
“What the hell is going on?” I said, looking over at Gerard, who was looking at me. He shrugged and looked out the window again.
“I don’t know what that was all about. Looks to me like the cop is leaving. And that other guy acted like he didn’t wanna have anything to do with it.”
“I know. Weird.” Just then, Mikey came back in and looked excited about something.
“Dude! I was just standing in front of the bus where no one could see me and Adam was trying to tell that cop that you lunged at him first and knocked him on the ground.” I frowned, going from zero to bitch in two seconds flat.
“What?!” I stood up, ready to go outside and beat the shit out of Adam myself.
“But wait! That other guy came over when he saw the cop and told him what he saw. He said that you started screaming your head off for Adam to leave you alone and then you shoved him backwards. Then Gerard came out and Adam went for him and that’s when you two started to fight.”
“Well that’s the right story,’ I said, standing there with my hands on my hips.
“No it’s not Jordyn. I did hit him first. But it was because he was in my face yelling obscenities about you.”
“It doesn’t even matter guys,” Mikey continued, “because the cop doesn’t believe Adam at all. He took the other guy’s word and left.” Mikey was smiling. Gerard and I exchanged puzzled glances.
“Well that’s fine. I don’t really care. I still think Adam deserved what I gave him.” Gerard went to the sink and washed his hands. I took a deep breath and flopped down on the sofa. Ray and Bob came back in then, and sat down in the living room.
“What’s going on?” Bob asked to no one in particular.
“The cop didn’t believe Adam, dude!” Mikey seemed way too happy about this fact. He started telling Ray and Bob everything he had just told Gerard and me. I was getting a large headache, so I went into the back bedroom for a little peace and quiet. I lay down on the bed and closed my eyes. The next thing I knew, Gerard was tapping me on the leg.
“Hey, sleeping beauty. We have to do our show. You wanna come watch again?” I sat up and squinted at Gerard.
“Did I fall asleep?” I asked, looking over at the clock on the wall. I slept for two hours.
“Yeah you did. In record time I think. So, are you coming with us?” I nodded and yawned.
“Hell yeah. I’m not going through what I did last night with security.”
“Well, we’re going now. Better hurry.” I got up and went to the bathroom. I brushed through my hair quickly and put on some eyeliner to mask my sleepy face as much as I could. I used the bathroom and washed my hands and headed out the door behind the guys.
