In the morning, Heather was the first one up, because of the cold and discomfort in her muscles. Her neck ached terribly and she wondered what she was doing in the hallway in the first place. Then she remembered. Now cold, aching, and in a sour mood, Heather just wanted the company of her beloved snake.
After putting one some decent clothing, Heather lugged the huge snake out of it’s cage and wrapped it around her body, nuzzling it’s cold scaly skin against her cheek. It was a feeling she loved; comforting like a baby blanket. “At least you love me, right Goyle?” she asked the snake, looking into it’s large unblinking pink eye. “Of course you do.”
She casually walked into the kitchen, barely letting the tight coils of the snake affect her gait. Upon reaching the counter, she opened nearly all the cabinets, looking for coffee and filters; finding them, she loaded the coffee maker with both.
Opening the cabinets once again, she located a mixing bowl, waffle iron, pancake mix, and aspirin, four of which she swallowed, without the aid of something to drink. Heather positioned the snake so she could sit at one of the dinning chairs without injuring him. With only the quiet, shallow breathing of Goyle, and the gurgle of the coffee pot, Heather slowly slipped into her own mind.
She knew she liked Steve-O, even if it was only a silly little crush, but the way he acted towards her was just making things worse. The one time he said something to her when he wasn’t either drunk, high, or both was when she showed him his room, and she figured that he just said that because everybody expected him to say smart ass remarks. The longer she thought about it the more she got mad about it.
“Do you mind if I make me a cup of coffee?” Karen said next to the counter, still dressed in her pajamas, interrupting Heather from her thought.
“Oh sure… mugs are in the cabinet; creamer and sugar in that one.” Heather said pointing to different cabinet doors.
After Karen made her cup of coffee, she sat across from the table from Heather.
“He won’t bite me will he?” She said, breaking the silence once again.
“Oh no, I’ve had him for nine years and he’s only bit me once, and that was only because I smelled like rabbits.” Heather said, pulling up her hoodie sleeve, revealing a semi-circle of small scars on her forearm. “You can pet him if you want.
“Really?” Karen reached out for the snake then hesitated, “You promise he won’t bite?”
“Yeah, look, I’ll even turn his head so he can’t see you.”
Even though it was known by the girls that Heather was the one that disliked Karen the most, the two talked for almost two hours. Heather was so mad about the Steve-O thing, she didn’t have it in her this morning to try to be mean to the girl across from her.
Heather stood up and walked to the refrigerator. “Now that it’s noon, I’m going to make breakfast. I figured the coffee would wake everybody up, but I guess not. If they come out and breakfast is cold, it’s on them.” She pulled out orange juice, milk, butter and syrup, then walked to a counter and pulled plates, knives and forks out from under it and set them table.
As she poured pancake mix and water into the bowl, groaning could be heard from both hallways connecting to the kitchen.
“I smell coffee…” Bam stated, walking into the kitchen and making him and Dunn a cup.
“God I am so hung over.” Dunn said, rubbing his face with his hand. Bam set his cup in front of him and Dunn quickly took a sip. “How did I get to bed last night? I feel like a truck hit me.”
“Me and Savvy carried you in there last night after you passed out.” Heather said while pouring batter into the iron, not turning to look at him.
“Hmm… well… remind me to thank her.” He took another sip from out of the mug. “Wait… you put all the passed out people to bed and you’re up cooking breakfast?”
“Yeah, she was the last one to sleep and the first one awake.” Karen said.
Bam looked over and Heather and nearly fell backwards out of his chair. “What the fuck! Why do you have that thing around you!? I told you I would fucking kill it if I saw it around me,” He hissed.
Heather quickly turned around, ladle still in hand and flung some batter around the room, a few droplets of which hit Bam’s face. “You will not do anything of the sort. If I see YOU anywhere near my snake and you make any kind of empty threat like that again… I’ll break each of your fingers individually. I mean for Christ’s sake Bam, you just woke up and you wanna start in on me; can’t you take a break for one god damn day?!” She paused as she turned around. “You might wanna think twice about crossing me this morning… I’m already in a shitty mood and I’m cooking your food.” She shot over her shoulder.
Bam sat down defeated.
“I told you that you couldn’t handle her.” Dunn leaned over and whispered to him.
Soon after the outburst, Preston, Wee-Man, Kyle, and Courtney came out of their rooms.
“What the hell was all that about?” Wee-Man asked, clutching his head.
Heather looked over her shoulder at him, then to Bam.
“Oh, okay,” Wee-Man nodded in understanding.
The four that had just woken up sat around the large dinning table. Heather set plates of waffles in front of the people who were seated.
“Go ahead and eat, I’m not waiting for the people still asleep.” She said before looking down and Bam and dropping his plate in front of him. He jerked back both from the sound of the ceramic plate against the wooden table and the white snake wrapped around Heather’s body. She smirked at him.
He hated that she could so easily beat him. Calling that truce last night was one of the hardest things he had done in a while. He was just glad that it was only for last night though. Even though she was beating him every time, he could get under her skin easy and she was quick to anger.
He wasn’t so stupid though as to not know when to stop, so he ate his breakfast slowly, careful not to anger her again in such a short time. Savvy and Pontius both walked into the kitchen and sat down side by side.
“Morning you two…” Heather smiled as she set a plate down in front of both of them.
Pontius giggled and held Savvy’s hand under the table.
“You okay?” Savvy asked referring to last night.
Dawning a ignorant expression she looked back at her. “Yeah… why wouldn’t I be?”
Savvy shrugged back at her and began digging into her food as Pontius poured them both some orange juice.
“Well look at little Susie Homemaker!” Knoxville announced laughing as he leaned against the wall.
Heather threw a rag at him. “Fine then you don’t get any!”
“Oh my god no, I’m sorry. I just think it’s funny how you take care of everybody,” Johnny said as he took a seat next to an empty chair.
“Where’s Gina?” Dunn asked him as Heather set his plate down for him.
“I guess she’s still asleep, I tried to go in and check on her, but I guess she locked the door after I left last night.”
“Uh-oh!” Preston said, playfully elbowing Johnny in the ribs. Knoxville pushed him back and started to eat.
“Guh… Heather I hate you!!” Gina called from down the hallway.
Heather ducked her head down and smiled broadly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!” she called back.
“Ow… it feels like I have an anvil on my head… I knew that drink tasted funny.” She said as she took a seat across the table from Johnny, much to his dismay. “My whole body aches.”
“Need a massage?” Johnny asked playfully.
“As a matter of fact,” Gina started, and then seeing that it was Knoxville who offered, she ducked her head. “No, no I’m fine. Just sore.”
Kyle laughed and mumbled to himself, but loud enough for Gina to hear, “Such a little bitch when it comes to drinking.”
“Shut the fuck up!” Gina screeched, smacking Kyle in the chest.
“Ow!” Kyle choked. He pushed Gina.
Gina groaned in pain, laying halfway on the chair on the other side of her.
“Kids, kids, calm down or I will shank you!” Heather said, putting a plate on the table in front of Gina.
Gina managed a smile as she sat up and rubbed her hands together at the sight of the yummy food in front of her. She glanced up at Johnny and was sent into an instant panic at the smug look on his face. She frantically tried to contemplate whether she had done anything incredibly embarrassing last night. She was afraid the smug look on Knoxville’s face was a result of memories he had of last night that she didn’t. The last thing she remembered was being in the pool, which seemed weird because she didn’t like being in water. She sighed to herself and dug into the food Heather placed in front of her, hoping she was just being paranoid and nothing weird had happened last night.
Steve-O stayed in his bed, dreading facing Heather this morning; but soon the smell of coffee and people talking lured him out of his bed. Standing in front of his door, he rubbed his sunk in eyes and took a deep breath, preparing himself for when he stepped into the kitchen. He turned the handle and slowly walked into the dinning room, taking a seat next to Knoxville, being as quiet as possible.
“Damn Steve-O, you look like shit.” Knoxville said, noting the dark rings under his eyes.
At the mention of his name, Heather turned. Seeing him caused her rage to appear once again. Sensing this, Goyle tightened around her waist, almost painfully so.
“I’m sorry, baby.” She said, calming herself down as she ran her hands along his body and he rumbled in response.
Steve-O looked out of the side of his eyes at her. The creamy color of the snake matched her light skin, but contrasted greatly with her black hair and clothes. As she neared him, he cast his eyes down, not wanting to look into hers. She dropped his plate in front of him, much like she did with Bam’s plate, then took a seat next to Gina so that she couldn’t look at him.
“Damn Steve-O, what did you do?” Chris asked, almost shocked at the quick change of mood from Heather.
He looked up and shrugged, then returned to poking at his waffles with his fork.
“Don’t worry about it dude, she’s been acting like a bitch all morning.” Bam blurted out.
Heather had to grip her fork till her knuckles turned white to keep from throwing her plate at his face.
Gina put her hand on Heather’s shoulder. “Calm down Heather… don’t let him get to you” she whispered.
Breakfast went by slowly as everybody talked about last night and generally got acquainted with one another. Heather stayed quiet throughout the meal, trying to keep calm. Whenever somebody thanked her for breakfast of complemented her on her bartending, she simply accepted it, and nodded.
Soon enough, everybody was full and the conversations have died down.
“Me and Steve-O here will clean up the dishes for you Heather.” Knoxville said while wrapping his arm around Steve-O’s neck.
“Wha… hey wait…” Steve-O began to protest before Heather leaned forward to look at them, which shut him up quickly.
“Really? Thanks,” she said while standing up and heading off to her room and into the shower.
"So," Savvy, said, lounging on a couch in the living room, her head resting on Pontius' stomach, "we still have a week before the cameramen are here again, and already there are some fights brewing. What's a couple of nice kids gonna do?" She said, smiling up at him.
He fingered a lock of her hair, cocking his head to the side. "I dunno... maybe we should find a way to calm everyone down? I mean, last night was good, but the alcohol didn't seem to pacify anyone. I think it just complicated things more."
"Yeah." Savvy said, suddenly depressed. "I wonder why Hiz doesn't just come out and say something to Steve-o. I've known her since seventh grade, and she's never held back her opinions at all."
"Wait, what? Heather likes Steve-o?" Pontius looked bewildered. "I mean, I knew Steve-o was checking her out, but I didn't know Heather--"
"Steve-o likes Heather?" Savvy sat up quickly, looking like a kid in a candy store to Pontius.
"Yeah.. I've known Steve-o FOREVER. I can tell his moods.. he's got it bad for the girl."
Savvy clapped her hands in glee. "Oh, Chris, you know what we have to do."
Chris looked confused again, and Savvy laughed at his thickness.
"Oh, the cleverness of me. We have to play matchmaker!" Savvy jumped up and raced to find Gina, Pontius trailing behind her. He saw Knoxville and Steve-o doing dishes in the kitchen, grimacing at the thought of the horrors his friend would soon be subjected to.
Back in the kitchen, Knoxville washed as Steve-O dried and put away the dishes. To make the grueling work a little less horrible, they splashed each other with water, laughed, and generally made small talk.
“So… what’s up with you and Gina?” Steve-O asked while putting away a handful of forks.
“Nothing, what are you talking about?” Johnny lied, causing Steve-O to raise an eyebrow at him. “That obvious, huh?”
“Painfully obvious, dude.”
“God… I don’t know. She seems kinda interested in me when we’re alone, but she acts ashamed or doesn’t even acknowledge me out in public; except for last night of course, but she was gone off her rocker. It’s so frustrating… I just wish I could get her to open up to me.” Johnny admitted as he pulled a plate out of the water and started scrubbing.
“Maybe that’s what I’m doing wrong,” Steve-O said, averting his eyes to the bedroom hallway.
Johnny sunk his hands into the warm sudsy water. “What do you mean?”
“I like Heather…” Steve-O said in a whisper with is head down, drying a plate.
“Really?”
Steve-O nodded.
“Well, what do you mean by, ‘Maybe that’s what I’m doing wrong’?” Knoxville said, running his fingers through his dark hair.
“I guess I kinda do the same thing to Heather that Gina does to you… I mean the two times I’ve been alone with her were the only two times I’ve actually talked to her. Once in the limo after the drinking contest between me and Savvy, and last night.”
“That was her yelling?” Johnny asked.
Steve-O nodded.
“Well, I’m not sure… but I don’t think it helps that you’ve only tried talking to her when you’ve been shit-faced. Did you even think that she might like you as well? I mean, if that’s true, I guess I could understand her getting mad at you…” Knoxville said, looking out of the side of his eyes at his friend.
Steve-O laughed in disbelief. “Yeah, I’m sure… if anything she probably hates me. She doesn’t seem like the kind of person to be shy about something like that. I mean, you saw what she was doing when we first pulled up to this house.”
“Well, you don’t know her, Steve-O… maybe try talking to her when you’re sober, possible not alone?” Johnny said, trying to raise Steve-O’s mood.
“I guess I could try,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck with his palm, “I don’t know what I would say to her. What if I say something stupid and embarrass myself?”
Knoxville burst out laughing. “Wait… YOU’RE worried about embarrassing yourself?”
“Shut-up, dude, I’m being serious,” Steve-O said, flinging water at Johnny’s head. “What I don’t get is how I can be this uptight about some chick I’ve known…what?… three days?”
Johnny drained the water out of the sink, done with the washing. “I can’t help you there, dude. I have the same feelings for Gina and it’s driving me insane. But maybe you could talk to Gina and Savvy about Heather?”
“Yeah, maybe…” Steve-O said looking up the stairs that led to their rooms. “I’ll go do that… if just to get her to not be mad at me anymore.” He started heading up the stairs. “Oh, and could you not tell anybody about this? If it turns out that she doesn’t like me—which she probably doesn’t—I don’t want her to find out about me liking her and me end up looking like an idiot because of it.”
“Sure Steve-O…” Knoxville said in his gravelly voice. He could tell Steve-O was being sincere. Johnny had things to think about himself so he went out back to sit in silence.
As the boys did the dishes, Savvy and Pontius were sitting across from Gina in her room. Gina still looked ragged from the night before, but this was important.
"Oh, Savvy, how do you not have a hangover? God, I feel horrible... and I have so many memories I don't want to even think about..."
Savvy smiled softly at her in-pain friend. "Babe, it's not so much as how do I not have a hangover, but how much of one do I have? My head hurts, but I didn't go all out yesterday. I wanted to remember as much as possible..." Savvy was holding Pontius' hand, and she gave it a squeeze as she said this.
"Anyway, we called this tiny meeting for a very good reason. Chris and I have knowledge that a certain Hizzle likes a certain Steve-o..."
Pontius finished her sentence. "And the feelings are reciprocated. Wholeheartedly." He and Savvy nodded at each other, then turned to Gina.
"Oh, you two, you're so cute! You hold hands, and you finish each other's sentences... I sense many children in your future!" Gina gushed, momentarily disregarding the bombshell that they had just dropped.
"Gina! C'mon, listen!"
Gina laughed at them again, then registered their comments.
"Our baby Hiz is growing up? She likes a BOY?!" Gina and Savvy leaned in, whispering to each other.
"Ooh!" Savvy squealed. They continued their whispering, before both of their heads came back up.
"Chris, you have to talk to him for us. Gain his trust, make him spill-"
Steve-O knocked quietly on the doorframe of Gina’s room, unknowingly halting Savvy’s speech. He already checked Savvy’s room and he figured that this was the only other place the two girls would be.
“Speak of the devil…” Savvy said as she stood in the doorway.
He looked around the hallway nervously, unsure if he should confront his problem or turn away. “Can I come in? I’ve been wanting to talk to you and Gina.” He had made his choice.
Savvy smiled and opened the door wider, revealing Pontius and Gina sitting on the popcorn bed.
Steve-O wrinkled his brow at the sight of Pontius, wondering what he was
doing here, but shrugged it off and walked in.
Both girls and Pontius watched Steve-O as he paced back and forth in the room, wondering if he was going to say anything or just make a track in the carpet.
“I like Heather,” he finally blurted out, pausing. “Even though I’m sure you could already tell Chris.”
“Damn that was easy!” Pontius announced, laughing.
“Well… actually… thanks to him… we already know.” Gina told him quietly.
“Heh, go figure… you can never keep you trap shut.”
Pontius just raised his hands in his defense.
“Well, what do you want us to do about it?” Savvy asked, leaning her head against Pontius’ shoulder.
Steve-O clutched his head in frustration. “Hell, I don’t know… talk to her for me? I mean, don’t tell her I like her or anything; I just don’t want her to be mad at me anymore, even if that’s the best I could hope for.”
“Don’t you think you should talk to her yourself buddy?” Pontius asked, leaning forward slightly.
“Yeah, I know… I just gotta figure out what I’m going to say to her.”
The four talked for a few minutes more about the few encounters Steve-O and Heather had, with the girls butting in, scolding him on what he did wrong. As the conversation came to a close, Gina and Savvy ensured him that they would talk to Heather for him.
“Please don’t tell her this…” Steve-O pleaded. “And thank you,” he added as he stepped out of the door.
Heather had finally finished her shower. She had taken a longer shower than normally, hoping that the warm water would help sooth some
of her anger, which it did. Stepping out of the bathroom in nothing but a towel, she headed off towards Gina’s room to check on her. The towel she was rubbing through her hair was steadily turning light purple from the fresh dye, causing her to scoff.
As she walked down the hallway she saw Steve-O walking the opposite direction and immediately regretted not putting clothes on. Trying not to let it affect her, she lifted her head higher, and walked a little lighter as she passed him; secretly hoping her had noticed her as she walked passed.
Steve-O stopped and looked back at her once she was a few feet from him, eyeing the slit that went up her thigh from where the edges of the towel met; it was dangerously close to showing off her derriere. Turning around, he groaned longingly and walked down the stairs to distract himself with something else.
Heather knocked on Gina’s door and let herself in, shutting the door again once she was passed it.
Pontius let out a cat whistle at the sight of Heather in nothing but her towel, which caused Savvy to squeeze painfully hard on his hand.
“Sorry love,” he giggled in her ear before blowing a raspberry on her neck.
“Awww… aren’t you two cute?” Heather chimed sarcastically.
“Still not out of that habit?” Gina asked, questioning her attire.
“You know, old habits die hard. How are you feeling?”
“Oh, a little better. My head still hurts though. I’m glad you showed up, we want to talk to you.”
“Is that so? What about?” Heather asked as she combed her fingers through her hair.
“Steve-O…”
Heather jerked her head up, surprised. “What about him?”
“We know you like him.” Savvy answered, smirking.
“What… I… No I don’t!” Heather protested, but she knew she had blown it. She also became extremely conscious of Pontius being in the room at this time, as him and Steve-O were close friends.
Gina and Savvy both raised an eyebrow at her, knowing the truth.
“Heather likes Steve-O!” Pontius
chanted.
“You’re not gonna tell him are you?” Heather asked, slightly embarrassed. The heat of all the eyes in the room on her was starting to get under her skin.
“No, but you should. Hell, he might even like you back,” Gina said, truth underlining her words, “and if you won’t tell him, at least be a little nicer to him, for all our sakes.”
“Oh yeah, anybody who’s drunk as hell could like anybody else. Shit I could look like a bridge troll and Bam would still try to get in my pants if he was drunk enough. And what about you?” Heather asked, turning on Gina, “you tell me ‘oh just tell Steve-O that you like him’, when you’re all hot for Johnny, but you wig out whenever he’s around you? But if I have an insecurity about telling some random guy that I’ve known for two days that I like him, you want to lecture me? I think not…” Heather hissed the last sentence.
She stopped and took a deep breath, realizing what she was doing. Gina looked shocked and she sunk back slightly. Having the fact that she spooked around Knoxville thrown back in her face stung.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell at you… you know how I get when I’m cornered,” Heather apologized, referring to all the attention on her. “I didn’t mean to yell at you. The way you handle your business is your deal, and we’re talking about me right now. How bout this… I’ll be nicer to him, but I’m not telling him I like him… I don’t wanna seem like a stalker. Sorry Gina.”
Heather walked out of the room not letting anybody else say anything. She was ashamed that she yelled at Gina. “I’m going to the pet store to get Goyle some food.” She yelled throughout the house, using it as an excuse to get some air.
“Wow…” Pontius muttered back in the room.
“I’m fine…” Gina got out, answering before the question. “I’m gonna go do something constructive. I wonder if one of the boys will teach me how to skateboard. That should be fun.” She walked out of her room towards the back yard.
Savvy and Pontius watched her leave, then looked at each other. Both realized that they were alone for the time being, and they scrambled off to his room, tripping over each other as they made their way down the hallway.
