“Raymond, I wish you would have brushed your hair down. You know how your father talks about your fascination with having your hair like that. It’s so unruly, I do wish you would cut it.”
“Mother! Please! I like my hair just as it is. And Dad has never complained after we reached our agreement. So please, just stop fussing.”
“Maria, leave the boy alone. Now come along, and I want the best behavior as this is one of my few superiors.”
Ray laughed as his dad made the comment not only towards him, but to his mother as well. The short plump lady merely huffed before continuing down the walk towards the house of the new residents to the base. Mrs. Toro was chair of the welcoming committee, so she had insisted that their family be the first to show up at the new house.
As they walked up to the door, Ray felt a hand pop his own, which was pulling at the collar of his shirt. He frowned at his mother before she turned as the door to the house was opened by a nice looking lady who seemed a bit younger than his own mother with short brown hair pulled back from her face.
“You must be the new family on base. I’m Maria Toro and this is my husband, Samuel, and our son, Raymond. Let me be the first to welcome you to our base.”
“Thank you so much. I’m Helen Bryar, my husband Joseph is in the backyard with our grill, and these two coming down the stairs are our children, Natalie and Robert.”
“Mom!”
Natalie giggled more as their mom introduced her brother with his actual name and his obvious dislike of it, but was still pleasantly surprised to see that Ray was a part of the base family as well. She walked the rest of the way down the stairs and walked up beside her mother and shook hands with each of Ray’s parents, managing to keep from laughing at the looks Ray was giving her and Bob.
“So which one of you are the oldest?”
“They’re twins. Natalie is older by a few minutes even though you can’t tell it by looking at them.”
“Twins? Good heavens! I can barely keep Raymond straight, but two at once. You must be a darling. And with the sort of life we live.”
“Would you like me to show you to our backyard, Mr. Toro?”
“That sounds like a great idea, young man.”
“Are you kids going to be alright for now while we finish the meal? There should be a few of our movies unpacked in the living room, Natalie.”
“Of course mom, besides, we’ve already met.”
“Oh, isn’t that nice! Such a shame our children have to move from school to school. But I know that Raymond has several friends from other bases that he still keeps in touch with. What about your children, Helen?”
Motioning off towards the living room with a quick tilt of her head, Natalie managed to make it into the living room before bursting into a fit of giggles, Ray following close behind, laughter erupting as they fell back onto the old couch. Finally after a few moments, they had managed to calm down to just the occasional snicker.
“Why didn’t you tell us you lived on base?”
“Oh I don’t know. I’ve never really liked the fact, besides, Mama had mentioned a guest party this morning before school so when you told Craybourne you were on base, I figured it was your family anyways.”
Natalie laughed as she could hear their mothers’ in the kitchen chattering away. Well perhaps life on this base wouldn’t be so bad, now that she had at least one friend on the base with her, besides Bob.
“Boy your mom is quite the character. I don’t think she has taken a single breath since she walked in. Is she always like that, or is it just around new people?”
“Always like that and worse. Sometimes she talks so fast that me and my dad can’t even understand her. Most of the time she just shakes her head and continues muttering anyways. So sometimes we pretend we didn’t understand her, just to tease her.”
Bob walked into the room, noticing Ray and Natalie sitting on the couch together laughing and chatting away. He also noticed the silly little dress that she had picked out to wear for tonight as well, and the way that Ray seemed to be leaning into her while talking. This sent an alarm to his protective brother system, and he made a mental note to warn their new friends about his sister. Although the two must have noticed him walk in, because the smiles broke out across their faces and Natalie turned around and motioned for him to sit on the couch beside her.
“Come on, Bobert. We’ll see what movies Mom has already unpacked.”

“That was a lovely meal, Helen dear. And I do hope you will stop by our house to visit sometime soon. The invitation is always open. Come along, Raymond. You still have to finish your Calculus exam. Thank you again, Helen, Joseph. And you two darlings are welcome to come visit Raymond whenever you choose.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Toro. It was nice to meet you, Mr. Toro. See you tomorrow, Ray.”
Natalie had stood at the doorway with her mother as they had shown the last of their guests out after the party. It had been like all the other social parties that they had been to over the years, but at least with this latest one, there had been someone to talk to, and that made a world of a difference to Natalie.
After waving one last time as Ray’s family reached the edge of the sidewalk, Natalie turned and went back into the living room to tell her dad goodnight before heading up to get ready for bed. When she reached her room, she found her brother sitting on her bed, looking rather irate about something.
“What’s up, Bobert?”
“I should be asking you that question, Natie. You and Ray were awful cozy tonight. For god’s sake, Natie, do you have to be such a determined flirt? I mean, sure some of the guys you’ve dated were pretty okay, but do you have to start searching as soon as we move somewhere new?”
“What are you talking about? Ray is just a friend, who I just met today, remember?”
“Yeah, I know, Natie. And I know you, probably better than you know yourself sometimes. So please at least promise you’ll be careful around the guys that we have as friends here. Promise?”
“I don’t know why you’re so worried, Bobert. But if it will make you feel better, I promise. Not that I’m not careful with guys anyways. Now shoo so I can get a shower and do some more unpacking.”
Natalie shook her head, not knowing what had suddenly gotten into her brother’s head. But she also knew that he was stubborn and when he had something stuck, it was stuck until he finished with it. She pushed him out of her room with a giggle before going over to the closet and pulling down a pair of pajamas along with a towel before heading over to the bathroom.
