Chapter 6 - Doggie Food
Mirell took care of Changmin for the next three days, as the others collected food; berries, fruit, and nuts. They still didn’t know how they were going to carry water.
It rained all three days but there was no guarantee it would continue to rain.
“Maybe if we should just try to go with out?” suggested Junsu.
“As long as it rains we should be fine, but how long will it last?” Asked Yunho.
“Its pretty dark still, so we can be sure, it will be raining for at least two more days at most. We’ll be traveling east, so maybe that will be enough...”Yoochun replied.
“Luckily we were finally able to see the damn sun.” Changmin said bitterly.
He hated being as weak as he was. He hated not being able to help and only seemed to be a burden.
He wasn’t getting better, he was getting worse and that didn’t help his temper. Mirell placed another soaked clothe on his head and he slapped her hand away.
“Enough! I’m fine! Go help them or something! Just leave me alone!” Changmin yelled at her.
Mirell blinked, gently placed the clothe on his forehead, and leaned in close, “Don’t be an ass. I’m saving your life remember?”
She stood up and walked away from him, leaving him fuming and coughing. She clenched her hands, hard enough that her nails broke the skin.
Jaejoong laid a hand on her shoulder as she walked by and she shrugged it off. Jaejoong had been suffering from nightmares and barely slept the past three days.
She had tried to help him when he cried out in his sleep, but at those times he was as bad tempered as Changmin.
The others had been too tired to wake from his cries, so they still didn’t know and Mirell didn’t tell them. She knew Jaejoong didn’t want them to know, he didn’t want her to know.
She climbed down the tree, leaving blood on the bark from her cut up hands.
“I’m going to look for something to carry water in. I’ll be back later.”
Mirell had a good sense of direction and could easily find her way back. She spent the next five hours, searching through what wreckage she could find.
She found some decomposing bodies, and wondered if they should bury them or not. She was sure they’re families would want to bring their bodies home.
So burying them would prevent that but animals would surely come and she was surprised to find them intact still.
She still couldn’t find anything useful, and it looked like they might have to travel without water after all. They were planning to leave tomorrow morning and head east towards the ocean.
They were sure to find a town that way. She ran her hand through her dirty hair, and winced slightly, her hands starting to sting.
That’s when she heard it, a low growl, then snarl. Mirell turned in spot slowly, searching for the sound....she found it. A wolf stood about 10 feet from her, baring its teeth.
Mirell cursed, wolves were endanger in China, what the hell kind of a sick joke was it that of all the animals they find, it was a wolf.
She racked her brain as to how to get the wolf to leave her alone or how to get away. Wolves can’t climb trees, that’s a good thought, but at the moment there were no good climbing trees around.
She thought in panic, of a tree on the way here she could climb and get away from the wolf.....of course, she had climbed a tree easier trying to get a better view.
It was just a little ways behind her. Could she make it? Time to find out. Without another thought. Mirell whirled around and sent off running, taking deep breaths.
She heard the wolf growl and sent off running, and the new sound of more wolves joining as well. She cursed again and saw the tree ahead of her and added some speed.
She didn’t miss a beat and pushed hard on the ground and pushed herself up, reaching out to grab the lowest branch.
She screamed as teeth sank into her leg, hot pain blossoming from her lower leg, moving up. Mirell turned, still holding into the branch and looked down at the wolf holding her leg.
Its yellow eyes stared back at her. She kicked with free leg as another wolf jumped at it. She felt a heavy paw hit it, knocking her aim aside.
The wolf tugged on her leg savagely and Mirell gasped, then aimed another kicked, hitting the wolf over his right eyes. The wolf clung to her leg, the other two wolves snarled.
Mirell began to cry, and desperately continuing to hit the wolf with her other leg, making sure not to lose her grip on the tree, if she did, then she was done for. Finally the wolf let go and Mirell pulled herself up.
She laid on the branch panting, watching the wolves below and thinking she was still too close for comfort, right at the moment, one of the wolves jumped into the air and snagged her jacket which as been open and half of it leaning over the edge of the branch.
She rolled with the jacket, sliding it off and swinging herself to the branch next to her. The wolf under her shook the jacket, while the other two, jump at her now dangling legs, which she pulled up immediately.
She carefully climbed up two more branches and laid there on her stomach, catching her breath, stared down at the wolves, circling the tree.
She shifted her injured right leg slightly and winced. Forcing herself to sit up, she checked the damage and cursed.
Her lower leg, right above the ankle had several large gashes, the muscles seemed to have been damaged as well, and she could sickly see just a small bit of white bone.
“Shit...” she cursed. She wouldn’t be able to walk on that leg now. She pulled out the small medicine bag she made with a pieces of Jaejoong’s torn shirt.
The poor guy’s shirt was brushing the top of his belly button. She grinned softly at the thought of Jaejoong’s lean abs, then shook her head and pulled of the surgery needle and the last of the alcohol wipes.
It wasn’t raining anymore but she found a leaf that had caught some water and used it to pour over the wound. She threaded the needle, cleaned it with an alcohol wipe then set to work.
Tears roll down her face, as she stitched the skin together. She did what she could with the muscles and tendons. After finishing her leg, she realized, they were almost out of thread.
She tucked the last two alcohol wipes into the medicine bag, saving them for Changmin and use a bit of the antibacterial cream over the stitches, then merely let her torn, bloody jeans back over her leg.
She cleaned the needle with some water and the same alcohol wipe she used on it, and tucked it back into the bag.
“Now what?” she asked herself out loud.
The wolves left but she didn’t dare go down yet. Looks like she would have to stay here a while.
But looking at the darkening sky, she knew night was approaching and it was either return now and have a chance of running into the wolves or stay here for the night, and worry the hell out of the guys.
She didn’t have to think about, worry the hell out of the guys. She didn’t want to be doggie food. She would stay here and return in the morning.
