Trouble in Paradise
Oh goodness, I either need a stiff drink or a really strong cup of coffee. Maddie couldn’t believe she had to get up already. Pulling herself out of bed was harder than carrying two drunk 23 year olds from a bar to the car, than inside of the house to there beds. That I’ve don’t quite a few times this year. What the hell is with the sun? It’s January for god’s sake it’s suppose to be dark.
Not bothering to change or shower yet since she had plenty of time to do that after her first cup of coffee she walked out of her room in her pj’s and into the kitchen, where yet again her two best friends sat smiling.
“You certainly got in late last night miss anti social.”
“Oh god, I have a feeling were going to be meeting like this a lot.” The words made there way out with no hesitations.
“So you lost the kid huh?” Brylee looked like the cat that ate the canary, “Don’t be mad at Trista she was drunk last night when I picked her up from her little function.” At Maddie’s raised eyebrow she shook her head silently telling her not to ask about it.
“Yes, Bry as you so eloquently put it, I lost the kid. The first day, I lost the kid; I just don’t know what I’m getting myself into.” The laugh that escaped Trista’s mouth surprised her just as much as it surprised the two other occupants of the room.
“What the hell? How much did you drink last night, Trista?” Ignoring the motions Brylee was making behind Trista back, Maddie willed Trista to answer.
“This conversation isn’t about me and how I did 6 shots off of my boss’s stomach last night, it’s about you and how your conversation went with Pete when he got home.” Trista snapped back at her.
“We talked,” Maddie shrugged her shoulders.
“And… Don’t end there tell us what happened before we beat it out of you.” Brylee raised her own coffee cup to her smiling lips.
“He accused me of sticking my nose where it doesn’t belong and asked if that’s why my former employees fired me. I think the question was like were you too busy sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong instead of actually watching the child.” The gasp that came out of the both of the women’s mouths as if they had planned it made Maddie laugh, “It’s ok, it made me come clean. I told him everything about my relationship with Tonya, about how she was my everything, about how she died and how scared I was when Aly went missing.”
“I told you to make him spill his own demons not you spill yours. Please tell me you got something out of him.”
“I did he told me about the abuse that Aly’s own mother put her through. It probably goes deeper than he truly knows. It’s going to be hard, Aly is a tough case but I think in time she might actually start liking me.” Standing up she smiled at the looks on their faces, “I promise you I’m ok. I’d tell you if I wasn’t. I gotta shower; I’ll see you guys later on tonight.”
As she turned her back Brylee smirked, looked at Trista and shouted after Maddie, “So are you falling for him or what?” All she got in response was the finger hearing the bathroom door shut she turned to Trista, “You better make sure you got that money ready to give me by next month. This is definitely the easiest bet I have ever made.”
“Bry, she’s not going to fall in love with him. She might like him, become a close friend but relationship? No way. I’m winning this bet so you better start saving your own money to pay me.” Trista flipped her long black hair over her brown shoulder and into Brylee’s face, one of the purple highlighted sections getting stuck to her lip glossed lips, Brylee huffed heavily and walked towards the front door.

A Week later…
Pete couldn’t believe the words that kept coming out of Danielle’s mouth, he was almost in shock.
“I didn’t lie to her; I just told her what my mother told me. I thought it would help her get over her stupid childish fears.”
“Get over… childish fears. For fuck’s sake Danielle she is a child, my 6 year old child to be exact. Stop acting like she isn’t apart of our lives.” Aly’s eyes were on her father at this point feeling happy that he was sticking up for her. She looked at Danielle who didn’t seem in the least bit sorry.
“Pete, she has to grow up, you can’t keep babying her. She has to realize that I am to be respected also. She treats me like shit, and I never did a thing wrong.” Aly’s jaw dropped, nothing wrong? How about all the times you pretend I wasn’t there when I tried to talk to you. Aly locked her eyes back on her dad willing him to say something.
“Danielle listen to me, she is my child. She will always be my child, nothing is going to change. As for the respect? I think that she might start respecting you if you start respecting her. She comes before you, she comes before the band, fuck she even comes before me. From this day forward everything I do is going to be in the best interest of Aly. Not you and not me but my little girl.” Aly smiled, he’s so my hero. I don’t care if heroes are suppose to have superpowers my daddy is a better hero than any of them, well maybe not Harry Potter but that’s ok. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Maddie her nanny open the door as quietly as possible and back herself into a corner.
“Pete, I respect you and I respect your daughter and the relationship you are trying to make sure you have with her but we’ve been together for a long time and I think that your letting this little being change you.” The anger was present on her face.
“Respect us? Danielle you came home at 4 in the morning last night. You were fucking giggling your head off; you woke me and Aly up. You had no damn respect for us when were sleeping last night in my bed; what makes you think that I believe you respect us when your sober.” Aly saw Maddie twitch a little bit in the corner, probably feel uncomfortable listening to daddy and Danielle argue. Aly watches as Danielle’s facial expression turns from angry to even angrier.
“Listen to yourself Pete! Your 6 year old daughter was sleeping in your bed last night. She’s a big girl and whether she thinks there is some kind of monster in her closet or not she should be able to sleep in her own bed. At 6 most little girls love the idea of being able to have there own room and not have to share with anyone but yours she can’t sleep in her own bed more than three or four times a week.” The anger was escalating, Maddie had only been there a few minutes but she could feel the tension between the love birds before she even walked through the door. She tried hiding herself in the corner and looked around for Aly; she spotted her hiding at the top of stairs listening to the on going argument. As Danielle had stated Aly’s issue with sleeping in her own bed Maddie noticed Aly slink away from the stairs and heard a door open and close.
She tried not to intrude on the conversation as she quietly made her way to the stairs to follow Aly but before she could make it to the first step she felt eyes on her. She turned slightly to look at the two of them. Danielle glared at her; man if looks could kill then I would definitely be dead.
“What the…Danielle what the hell was that look about? Maddie hasn’t done anything to you; you haven’t even met her before.” Pete glancing back and forth between the two girls, one he had known for a while; the same one he had always thought he would marry and the other he barely knew at all but he found him self wanting to spend more time with her.
“Oh we met and don’t worry I told her about our relationship Pete because I’m pretty sure you didn’t” Maddie turned and ran upstairs before this conversation focused on her more than it already had.

As she walked towards Aly’s room she tried to tune out the argument that continued downstairs. Stopping in front of the door she could hear the little girl talking, “Teddy I think that daddy’s stupid girlfriend needs to go. She’s mean and rude. I want daddy to find a nice girl that likes me and is willing to put up with me.”
Maddie’s heart broke at the words coming from the six year olds mouth, she knocked and pretended like she hadn’t heard what Aly had just said. “Aly sweetie, it’s Maddie. Can I come in?” she heard the lock click and the door slowly opened on its own. Walking in Maddie took another look around the room and found not only the pink, purple and yellow flowers, butterflies and fireflies but also what was a beautiful piece of art on the wall not covered in them. It was of the night sky, with a skyline of Chicago. Pete’s hometown, I wonder if she’s been there. Smiling she turned towards her “You okay? I saw you listen on the stairs.”
Afraid she was going to get in trouble Aly looked away from her and concentrated on parting her Barbie’s hair. Before Maddie could reassure her that she wasn’t the front door had been slammed shut with such force that it felt as though the whole house shook; Aly met Maddie’s eyes and both of them jumped at the sound of Aly’s door opening. Neither was sure of whom they wanted to see more Pete or Danielle.
“So what are we doing today?” At his voice Aly jumped off her bed and into his arms, her Barbie forgotten.
“We? Daddy does that mean that you’re not going to work today? Does that mean that my tutor doesn’t have to come today?? That I don’t have to learn anything?” Aly could barely contain the excitement she was feeling. Pete, on the other hand, hadn’t realized her tutor was suppose to come to day and could feel Maddie glaring holes into the back of his head.
Wanting to please both of the girls he thought about his answer, “how about you do a couple of hours of tutoring and then we’ll go on a picnic.” The sentence was aimed at Maddie and at her nod he smiled at Aly. “Well? You better get ready.” When Pete turned to leave Maddie winked at Aly and followed him.

As Aly got ready for the day, Maddie and Pete stared at each other in the hallway outside of Aly’s room. Neither was quite sure of what to say.
“I’m sorry you had to see that downstairs,” Pete blurted the words before he chickened out. “I’m also sorry about the things that Danielle might have implied at you when you first met her. She just drives me insane sometimes and I don’t know why she always feels like every girl is some kind of threat to her.” Rolling his eyes Pete continues, “they never measure up to her in looks or personality.” When Maddie still hadn’t said anything he raised his eyebrow at her.
“I’m just wondering if I was supposed to take that as some kind of compliment or insult.” Maddie tried not to laugh at the words coming out of his mouth, what personality? I seriously don’t know whether were talking about the same girl or not.
“No no I didn’t mean to insult you in any way. I mean your funny, hott and smart,” Seeing her raised eye brow and slightly taken aback look he realized what he had just said his face started to turn an extraordinary color of red, “I didn’t mean to say that… I mean it’s true.” He saw the smile on her face and stopped rambling, “I’m just gonna shut up now.”
Maddie chuckled at his discomfort, “I get it. It’s ok, what Danielle says and what Danielle thinks doesn’t bother me at all.” She tried to say it with as much confidence as she could muster but it came out a little flat. Both were completely uncomfortable with the situation they were in but neither knew how to get out of it.
“Daddy is this outfit ok?” Showing up out of no where, Aly asked innocently not understanding what had just passed between the two adults. Pete thankful for the interruption turned towards the little girl that was twirling around so he could see every angle of her outfit.
“Aly, you look so beautiful!!!” He smiled as she turned to Maddie to get her approval. A week, it only took a week for her to warm up to Maddie. He saw the gentle smile come across Maddie’s face. She’s beautiful…wait what the hell? Where did that come from? Coming out of his daze he saw a concerned look on her face.
“Pete you ok? You looked kinda out of it for a second there.”
“No, I’m fine. I just got lost in my thoughts for a minute. Where’d Aly go?” He asked noticing that his little girl was no longer in front of him. Maddie laughed, “She just went to answer the door, and you didn’t even hear the doorbell? Some thoughts you must have been having. Any who, it’s probably the tutor so you better be ready to help me in the kitchen since you decided we were going on a picnic.” With that she turned and ran downstairs to greet the young man at the door with Aly.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
After making sure that Aly was actually sitting still with her tutor and trying to concentrate Maddie made her way into the kitchen. As she was turning the corner she heard a loud shriek and shattering noise. Her walk turned into a sprint, when she arrived at the opening of the kitchen she saw Pete on his back on the floor, with a knife in his left hand, mayonnaise in his right and a jar of pickle juice broken on the floor. Seeing him with the mayo on his face and in his hair along with the pickle juice that had spilt on his shirt dripping off of him and onto the floor she couldn’t help the full on laugh that escaped her mouth. She fell to the floor; laughing so hard that she had actually started crying. After calming down she crawled on her hands and knees towards Pete trying to pick up the pieces of glass on the floor. “I’m sorry,” still trying to catch her breathe “Are you okay?”
“Yea I’m fine but at least I know that if I wasn’t; you would have been so worried. Will you just help me up?” He sat the jar of mayo on the floor, threw the knife in the direction of the sink and laughed as Maddie ducked her head afraid the knife would some how hit her instead. As she went to stand her flip flop covered foot slipped on the pickle juice that was lingering on the floor around Pete, losing her footing she landed on top of him and heard him groan in pain. She held her breathe as she tried to figure out what the hell had just happened.
“If you wanted to be close to me that badly you should have just told me,” He couldn’t help laughing at his own joke, “I think it would have been more comfortable that way for both of us.” He laughed harder at the glare she sent him. Hitting him hard on the stomach she pushed her self up and on to her feet, making sure she was stable she offered her hand.
“So what exactly were you doing, ya know, before you took a fall?” After carefully helping him up she walked towards the pantry her back to Pete she grabbed a kitchen towel for him to use to try and get the mayo and pickle juice off of shirt and face and out of his hair. “I mean how did you…”She stopped mid sentence, having turned back towards Pete to talk to him she saw he had no shirt on. His back was to her and she was watching as he tried squeezing all of the pickle juice out of the shirt and into the kitchen sink. Her mouth was suddenly dry and she no longer knew what it was she was going to say. Oh my god, shirtless Pete Wentz in front of me. I never realized what an amazing body he has. She couldn’t help the thoughts that were going through her head or the fact that he was staring at and talking to her but she wasn’t responding in any way, shit, he’s talking to me, what do I do? I mean it’s obvious that I was staring at his body. Damnit, great now he’s laughing at me. Mentally shaking her head she took a step towards him to give him the towel but before she could come up with anything to say a scream of pain slipped passed her lips followed by some swearing.
“Fuck, oh my god shit, that hurt,” she hopped towards the closest counter. Pete, still shirtless, walked towards her.
“Jesus Christ, that’s a lot of blood. Here let me see if I can get the glass out.” Before he could grab her leg she moved it out of his grasp.
“No that’s ok, I’m just gonna leave it in there you know as like a souvenir or something. I’ll just put a bandage around it.”
“Uh no, we have to get it out before it becomes infected. Give me your leg, Maddie stop give me your leg,” Before she could move it for the third time he grabbed her left ankle, pulled her pant leg up to her knee and tried to survey the damage that had been done to her foot. “OK now hold still and I’m going to pull out the piece of glass.” He gripped her leg, holding it tight against his naked chest; he pulled the glass out as gently as he could.
Maddie was holding her breathe, here she was bleeding immensely from her foot, in the closest quarters she’s been with a half naked guy in a while and she couldn’t stop the way her thoughts were going. God he smells good and he’s so insanely gorgeous were the only things she could think. Maddie’s eyes went wide as he pulled the glass out, her lips felt a little to dry almost chapped, she darted her tongue out to wet them and looked up at Pete for the first time since he had grabbed her leg; his eyes weren’t on hers though they were on her lips, her tongue and the way she was now biting her bottom lip. I wonder if she knows she’s driving me insane. Is she doing it on purpose or is she unaware of how badly I want her. Want her? Wait where is this coming from? I barely even know her. Not wanting to think about a girl that isn’t his girlfriend Pete decided to change the place he was looking at, he glanced up and locked eyes with her.
“What the hell happened in here?” the sound of Gabe’s voice made Pete jump away from Maddie causing Maddie to almost fall. Maddie cleared her throat and asked Pete where the bandages were after he pointed her in the direction she walked out in pursue of them with the towel wrapped securely around her foot. At the look Gabe was giving him Pete shook his head.
“Not now Gabe.” He bent down to pick up the jar of mayo and the pieces of glass that were lingering on the floor.
“It’s just I never thought you were going to pull a Jude Law so soon,” Gabe giggled a very unmanly giggle at his own joke. Seeing the question written all over Pete’s face he clarified, “you know doing the nanny.”
“Oh Jesus, Gabe I’m not doing the nanny.” Changing the subject as quickly as possible because he knew he wouldn’t mind “doing the nanny” as Gabe so nicely put it. He asked rudely, “What are you doing here?” Gabe grabbed Patrick’s laptop of the kitchen table, informed Pete that they were working on some new beats and walked out in a slightly huffy nature.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The rest of the day went by in an awkward blur. Lucky for the two adults they had a 6 year old that was keeping all of there attention. The picnic was out in Pete’s backyard, so deep into the woods you could no longer see the house. Aly dragged Maddie out into the fields to pick tons of flowers for her daddy, which now that they were back inside were sitting on the dining room table in a vase. An array of pinks, yellows, purples, reds, and blues spiced the dining room up a little bit. Aly had decided that she was going to go to her room and find a place for the other vase of flowers.
“Well since you seem to have everything taken care of do you mind if I take off a little early?” she could see his hesitation but whether it was because he wanted her there or he felt like he needed her there Maddie spoke before he could deny her request, “I just wanted to catch up with my friends ya know? I feel like I live here,” Not trying to sound rude but seeing the almost offended look on Pete’s face, “Not that it’s a bad thing. I just miss them.”
After getting home, going out to dinner with Trista and Brylee and describing to her friends what happened she was still confused. Pete’s my boss. He doesn’t want me and I definitely don’t want him. Except maybe I do and maybe I want him to want me. Oh god shut up. Great now you’re telling yourself to shut up. Maddie lay in bed trying to turn her mind off but she still didn’t manage to get to sleep until almost 1 in the morning.
