Persephone threw a pair of jeans and a baggy buttoned down shirt on, a shirt that had actually belonged to Bob years ago. She tied it around her midsection and pulled her auburn hair into a ponytail, blue eyes flashing as she glanced at herself in the mirror. She shrugged and walked into the living room where Mikey and Frank sat, frightened expressions on their faces. Mikey was the first to react to her presence.
“Oh thank God, Persy! What happened? We thought that Bob had killed you and left you to die in the bathroom or something. What happened? Did you kick his ass? He was bleeding awfully hard.”
Persephone frowned and shrugged. “Yeah, we got into a fight. Where is he? Is it really that bad?”
“He’s in the other bedroom. He gave us these clothes and went back in there. He said something about stopping the bleeding or something.” He paused and looked at Persephone’s face. “Persy, are you okay?”
She nodded and started to walk toward the back room. “I’m fine.” She heard them gasp at the sight of her back and sighed. She’d have to deal with that in a minute. She had forgotten about it. At least it wasn’t bleeding any more.
She opened the bedroom door and flinched at the sight of the blood moving freely down his back as he stood in the bathroom of the small room. Closing the door softly behind her, she walked up to him and touched his back tentatively. “I guess a sorry is in order?”
“Do not apologize for something I was very much asking for, Persy. Besides …” He turned and frowned, making her move so he could see her sides and her back. “I think you got punished enough for one day.”
“Here, at least let me heal it.” She pulled a blade from an ankle sheath and punched the very tip of the blade through her fingertip, holding it out to him. “Here. Just a little drop and your back will be fine.”
“You first, Persy.”
“If I go first, I’ll have to pierce the skin again. Just take it.” She held her hand in front of him, letting a few lines of blood trickle down her finger.
He took her hand and slipped her entire finger into his mouth, pulling back gently, tongue playing over the wound. She let out her breath in a ragged gasp and shook her head. “I don’t think I can go for round two this soon, Bobby.”
He stopped suddenly and looked up at her, surprise on his face. “You haven’t called me Bobby since we were newly married.”
“Maybe I’m feeling that this is like a new marriage. I still have your name, so it’s not like we were ever really not-married. We just have to get used to each other quirks, right?” Persephone stuck her still bleeding finger into her own mouth and shuttered as her back healed. She shook it off and wrapped her arms around his bare waist, laying her head on his shoulder. “I just think it would be best if we didn’t mention anything about this to Mikey or Frank.”
“Oh I agree with that one, Persy. I think they would tear me apart if they thought I had in any way tried to get you back by unconventional means. What did you tell them that noise was then?”
Persephone smiled and shrugged, pulling away from him, heading to the door. Before she opened the door, she looked over her shoulder, smile still wide on her face. “I told them I kicked your ass.”
She closed the door on the sound of his laughter as she walked into the living room with her brother and Frank. “Did you finish him, Persy? I mean, is he dead?”
“Well he was dead when we picked him up this morning, Mikey. If anything, he’s more alive now. I merely gave him a drop of blood to heal the wounds I inflicted on him. We’re going to need him come tomorrow night, whether we want to admit it or not.” She went into the kitchen and pulled out a milk jug that looked like it contained blood. She poured some into a glass and downed it quickly, shuttering slightly at the taste. “You guys want something to eat, drink?”
“What the fuck did you just drink?”
“Extract of human heart, I think. Not really sure. Research and Development make me drink this stuff. It’s one of the few things keeping me alive. So … I have milk and soda to drink and … we can call and have someone bring us something for food.” She opened the empty cupboards frowning.
“What do you mean that filthy shit is the only thing keeping you alive?”
“Keeping who alive?” Bob walked into the living room and flopped onto the couch, frowning as Persephone poured another glass of the thick red drink. “What … is that?”
“It’s extract of human heart and it’s one of the only things keeping her alive. Now what does that mean, Persy?” Mikey managed to answer Bob’s question and keep his at the same time. It was a real talent, but she didn’t think he would appreciate her changing the subject.
“The easy answer is that I’m dying, have been since that day I left Contract Valley. All of the survivors are. It changed are metabolisms to the point that we’ll either die or turn into something unpleasant. I went in the turn something direction. The human heart keeps me from hurting those I care about in normal life. Everyone knows about it and everyone knows we’re still looking for a cure.” She shrugged, downing some more of the vile concoction, flinching as her pupils expanded and contracted as she looked at them. “What?”
“You’re turning into a vampire, Persy.” Frank was the first to speak, the others too dumbfounded to even think. He had always been the first people to recover from stuff like this.
Sighing, she nodded. “Yes, I’m turning into a vampire. Rick is confident he can find a cure before it happens completely, but we’ve still taken precautions just in case. Are you sure you don’t want any food?” She moved to head toward the elevator, but Mikey stood and grabbed her, wrapping his arms around her as she started to cry. “I don’t want to be like them. I don’t.”
“Shh, Persy, we won’t let it happen. We’ll find a way to stop this.” Mikey looked at Bob and Frank for help. He had always been the one she came to for comfort, but he was never really good at it. He pleaded, using his eyes, for Bob to try something, anything to get her to calm down. If anyone could help her, Bob could.
“Come on, Persy.” Bob stood and walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her as she broke down. He picked her up and carried her to the couch, wrapping his arms around her while she sat in his lap and sighed, glaring at Mikey. They were supposed to be acting like they had been fighting earlier and because her brother had never been able to handle crying girls, Bob was forced to let the cat out of the bag. “No matter what you become, Persy, you know I’ll always be there for you.”
Persephone shook her head and stood from Bob quickly. “I know, Bobby, and I appreciate it, but until this thing gets cleared up, I don’t think I should have to worry about keeping you alive.” She held her hand up as he went to protest. “I didn’t lie when I said we can start from scratch. We are a newlywed couple again, yes, but I don’t need to worry about killing you if I start to turn. I need the three of you to swear that if I tell you to run from me, you’ll run.”
Mikey, Frank, and Bob looked at each other in turn, Mikey with a little bit of anger at Bob for making his sister fall for him again, but in the end, they all nodded. “We swear, Persephone.”
“Yeah.” Mikey nodded at her, turning his gaze from Bob who had answered first.
“Ditto.” Frank was his normal glib self as he spoke, sitting in a chair, alone.
Persephone took this as a good sign and shrugged. “Good. I’m going to go get you guys some food. Anything you eat in particular?”
“Frank and my tastes haven’t really changed much, Persy, so we’ll take whatever.”
“I don’t eat.” Bob turned his gaze to her and she hid the shutter that went through her. She may have agreed to be his wife again, but she was not sure she liked the new Bob. There was something sinister about him, but then again, she went from being an elementary school art teacher to killing for a living. She couldn’t say much.
She stepped into the elevator and let out a visible sigh of relief at finally having a moment alone. She hurt all over from her little romp in the bathroom with Bob, but she had work she still needed to be before tomorrow night. As the elevator doors opened, she heard her office phone ring and answered it quickly. “Seigneur De Mort Incorporated.”
“Ms. Bryar? There’s hardly any service out here. Can you hear me?”
“It’s Mrs. Bryar, and yes, I can hear you. Have you cleaned up the blood?”
“Yes, ma’am. We’ve gone through the whole town, top to bottom, leaving out the high school, of course, and cleaned up every ounce of blood we could find. Permission to return to base?”
“Granted. Get home safe.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Persephone hung up the phone and went out into her secretary’s office. She found Nia on the phone, as usual, and coughed to get her attention. “I have to go, boss just showed up. Yeah, I’ll tell her. Bye.” She hung up and smiled. “Rick says he’s made some progress with his miracle cure. Wants you to come see if the components make sense to you. I don’t know. It’s Rick.”
Persephone nodded and made a note to head down to R&D before getting back upstairs. “Will do, Nia. Will you order some food and take it up to my apartment? The boys are hungry and have been living off five year old leftovers. Could you handle that?”
“Sure, P. Um, quick question. Did you just get laid? You’re looking exceptionally well. Did you make up with that hot husband of yours?”
Persephone laughed, remembering in that instant why Nia was both her personal assistant and best friend. “Yes, we made up. As to how we made up, you’re spot on. Now get to work. Mikey and Frank won’t wait forever for food.”
“That’s the brother and his hot friend, right?”
“Yes, my brother and our friend. Is everyone hot to you?” Persephone smiled at her friend, knowing that answer that was coming next.
“No, but most of the people I know around here are. You’re either hot, or not worth a damn. You and your friends, P, are HOT!”
Persephone shook her head and walked out of the office, laughing. She went to the elevators at the end of the hall and put her key in the slot, hitting the basement key. She heard the familiar ding as the key and pass code were accepted. She leaned against the back wall of the elevator, hearing the numbers ding as she got closer and closer to the lower levels.
The elevator came to a stop and she slipped out of the doors before they were fully open. She walked down the long hall of labs and test areas, stopping at the door at the end of the hall. She slid her ID through the slot and put her code in, opening the door and moving down some steps before finally entering the office of Dr. Patrick Smith. She laughed as she spotted him with his heavy goggles on, looking into a microscope. “You had something for me to look at, Rick?”
“Oh, yes, Ms. Bryar, you came.”
“It’s Mrs, Bryar again, Rick.” Persephone smiled softly at the young man she had hired when all others thought he was too young to be a scientist. They were all now regretting it and he was faithful only to her. Not to mention the fact that she paid him twice as much as people who had been doing his job for thirty years made.
“I guess then congratulations are in order, Mrs. Bryar. But, yes, um, I have some interesting findings for you. I’ve spent most of the last week in the R&D dorm rooms so that I could see if these findings were significant for myself.”
“And what findings would those be, Rick?”
“Oh yes, the findings. Come with me.” Rick moved from his stool and walked briskly into the containment rooms. Persephone was a little leery about being in those rooms considering she had put most of the inhabitants in there, but she followed anyway.
She frowned as he led her to a single room in the back where all the vampires she had trapped were congregating in the middle of a table. One of them moved and she noticed an assortment of half eaten food on the table. “What’s going on, Rick?”
“Well, Mrs. Bryar, about a week ago I administered a drug I did not run by you on the vampires in cell blocks G through M. The next morning, they were telling me how hungry they were and giving me request for substantial food. I gave it to them. They ate everything. We moved them into the same room, and they have shown human signs. My assistants and I have even ventured into the rooms to get blood samples, which they gave freely. They appear to be human. It’s been a week, but we’re hopeful that this is it.”
Persephone didn’t know whether to faint, scream, cry, or slap him. He was telling her that there was a cure for her and Gerard. She had almost forgotten about her eldest brother being the leader of the vampires at Contract Valley. Now maybe she could put the cure into tranquilizer guns and administer it to them that way.
She shook her head and looked into the room again, noticing a few solitary figures in the back of the room. “What about those two?”
“Demons. We’ve administered the cure to them as well. They have been eating the food, but don’t seem to want to socialize with the others. We’ve been working on modifying the cure for them. Let me show you what we have so far.”
He opened the door to the room and Persephone flinched as he walked in without preamble. He was a lab technician; he knew nothing about the dangers of the vampires in the room with him. She followed with her hands at the ready to draw a weapon. She felt nothing but humans and demons in the room, though she was still cautious of the demons. “Persephone Way, it has been a long time.”
Persephone flinched and turned to the first vampire she ever pulled into custody. He had been the principle of her high school and her boss before the fire had taken over Contract Valley. Now, Argus Ross was just a shell of the man she had looked up to. “It’s Bryar now. I married Bob nearly ten years ago, remember? We had a little girl named Marta.”
“Oh yes, my memory is not what it used to be. I have to be reminded of the good things that went on in my life. I think it has something to do with becoming a member of the army of the undead.” He looked lost, like a puppy whose master had left the back door open.
Sighing, she leaned into him and put her head on his, knowing it was probably a stupid idea. She could feel his memories that were buried and pulled them to the surface, letting him remember the things the last five years and caused him to forget. “You gave me a job and helped when Bob and I were on hard times. The least I can give you are you memories.”
“Thank you, Persephone.” She gave the older man a hug and pulled back, looking at the pleading eyes of the others around her.
“You did it, Rick. They’re human. I don’t know how, but you managed to find a cure for an incurable disease. You’ll go into the books for eternity. It was great having you on the team.”
“You talk as if you can get rid of me, Mrs. Bryar. I like it here to much to leave. That and I owe you my life. I am loyal to only you. I may be published in books and get job offers for millions, but I won’t accept any of them.”
Persephone smiled and kissed the young man before her on the forehead. “You’re too sweet, Rick. From now on, call me Persephone. We’ve known each other too long to be so formal. Besides, I see you as a younger cousin more than a colleague. First things first though, we have to get the newly cured a place to stay. And their memories.”
She watched as Rick led Argus out of the room, thanking her the entire time. She moved down the lines of cured, laying her hands on their hands, and pulling their memories to the surface. She came to the last cured human and stopped, looking at him hard. “Johnny Ray, I could have sworn you were dead.”
“Not even close. Was turned into a demon. That Rick kid gave me a modified cure or something and I guess I’m cured. I am cured, right?”
“Yes, Johnny, you’re very much human.” She laid her hands on his head and pulled the memories of her own high school years from his head, laughing slightly as she remembered some of the pranks her, Bob, her brothers, Ray, and Frank helped him play on Argus. She released him and shook her head. “I had forgotten most of the stuff in your head.”
“Then I’m glad I could help you. Can I go home now?”
“It depends on what you consider home. Contract Valley is destroyed, condemned. You can never go back there.”
“Then can I just get a warm bed to sleep in?”
“We’ve had found an apartment building we own and are giving you and the others your own apartments.” Rick came around the corner and smiled. “You were one of the demons, right?”
Johnny nodded and Persephone spoke. “He’s cured as well. I don’t know what you changed with the demon dose, but you need to give it to the other two as well.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He pulled a syringe and a vile of clear liquid from his pocket, walking over to the other demons who seemed sadden that they were the only ones left. “Now, boys, you have to at least wait half an hour before we can let you leave.” He ejected them one at a time and then walked back over to Persephone, tucking the vile away. “They should be ready to go in about 30 minutes.”
Persephone nodded and looked at Rick questioningly. “Could you put the cure into tranquilizer darts?”
“I don’t see why not. What are you getting at, Persephone?” The name came off his tongue weird, but she knew that he was trying hard not to call her Mrs. Bryar.
“Tomorrow night we have a huge execution planned. If we can cure them instead of kill them, I could have my brother and best friend back.”
“I thought your brother and best friend were upstairs.”
“Mikey and I have an older brother. And Ray. He’s been our friend since we were in elementary school. It’s important to me to save them.”
She could see the wheels in Rick’s head working as he nodded and spoke quietly. “How many for each do you think you would need?”
Persephone gauged the number of vampires versus demons in Contract Valley in her head, remembering their powers. “One hundred and fifteen vamps to seventy five demons.”
“And you’ll need extras just in case … the demon serum doesn’t change the vampires in any way, if anything it makes them better faster. I think we could use the demon serum in all the weapons … Give me twelve hours.” He started to mumble under his breath as he walked from the containment room, heading to the lab.
Persephone, left alone with the two demons that had just been administered the cure, waited to give them their memories back. She did so and sent them with one of the lower level lab guys to the apartment buildings. She headed into the elevators, making her way to her own apartment, unable to wait until she told Mikey that they could save Gerard. It was by far the best news she could have received involving the following nights endeavors.
