Hayley was having that dream again. It was the dream where her brother carried her away from her father, saving her just before he killed her for leaving him. She could see her brother’s face with such clarity that she knew it wasn’t something she had made up, but his real face. She knew every line, every detail, and she knew that she would find him someday.
She awoke from the dream with a jolt as the van came to a stop in the parking garage. She yawned and woke Zac and Josh up, shoving them playfully as the three raced to get out of the van.
Jeremy and Andy led them out of the parking garage and into the streets where they saw the largest building in New Haven. “Here we are, gang. Bryar Enterprises.”
Andy moved with Jeremy across the street, only glancing back occasionally to make sure that the other three were following. They stepped through the front door of the building and began to head to the front desk to see if they could find Bill. They found Naida instead.
“Excuse me, miss. We’re looking for Bill Valentine.” Andy was as polite as he could be as he looked at the young girl in her ripped clothes, soaking wet.
“Bill’s not here right now. He’s too busy upstairs with his man lover.” Naida laughed and walked around the desk. She stopped in front of Andy and smiled, running her hands gently up his arms. “So tough, so kind, so easy to break. I would have no problem conquering you. You would be screaming for me to stop before I even began. A warlock, so you would not last long enough to have any pleasure with.”
She caught sight of Josh next and moved away from Andy to him, getting close enough to sniff the skin of his face. “A leopard, but so young. You would last longer than the warlock, but you would still fall under my capable hands. As would you, bear.” She moved to Zac next and smiled. “A virgin, how lovely. I have not had one of you kind. I would love to taste of ounce of your body before I destroyed it.”
Naida turned her eyes to Hayley and let out a high pitched shrieked. “Dragon! The power will consume you!” She twitched and placed a hand on her head. “Don’t let the power consume you. It will destroy your life.” Another twitch. “Life! Ha! What is life but a never ending cycle of torture and death?”
She moved to Jeremy, the last one of the group, and ran her hands up his bare arms as he just looked at her. “A wolf, strong, alone. Something we have in common.” She jumped back from him and moved away, walking in a zigzag like she hadn’t even touched him. “Wolf, loner, goner, Homer, Homer wrote the Odyssey, the Odyssey was about the sea, I miss the sea …”
Bill came around the corner at that time and ran, tackling Naida. “Nay! Honey, you shouldn’t be up here.” He spotted Andy and Jeremy and yelled for them. “Guys, can I get a little help here?”
He pulled a needle out of his pocket as Andy grabbed her. As soon as Jeremy touched her, she calmed. She looked up at Bill and shook her head. “Don’t, Billy.”
Bill stopped at the nickname and looked at her. “Naida? Is that you?”
“I don’t have a lot of time. I don’t even know how this is possible. Sex is the key, Billy. No, wait! Love is the key, but sex is the sealer. I don’t know if that makes sense, but … knock me out. Sedate me before it happens again, please, Billy.” Jeremy moved back unconsciously as she started to speak sense and she started to laugh, throwing Andy across the room like a rag doll before doing the same to Bill. “Ah, poor Bill, let me kiss it and make it better.”
Arms grabbed Naida behind and she calmed as the needle went into her chest. She looked down at the needle and found hands lowering her to the floor. She looked up into Jeremy’s face and smiled. “Thank you.” And she was gone.
“What the fuck is going on here?” Andy’s cry of outrage came from the other side of the room. “We came here for a normal check and have to deal with a crazy.”
Bill moved to Andy and hit him, hard. “That crazy is one of my best friends. She’s not completely crazy. She had a moment of lucidness there. I don’t know what she meant, but at least I have some idea.”
Jeremy stayed beside Naida, looking down at her. He ignored the arguing of Bill and Andy as he stared into the beautiful face of the woman before him. He heard Hayley sit beside him and sighed. “She’s beautiful, but looked at her legs.”
He moved so that Hayley could see the marks on her legs and arms. “I wonder what happened to her.” Hayley ran her hand over the young woman’s body, magically healing the scars, gasping slightly. She leaned into Jeremy and whispered carefully. “Did you see that?”
“Yes. Do it again.” Hayley nodded at Jeremy’s command and did it again, healing the other leg. She ran her hand over the young woman’s upper body and could see light under the dress she was wearing. “How do you do that, Haze?”
“I don’t know.”
A hand came up and grabbed Hayley’s wrist. Hayley tried to jerk away, but the hand held tight. “Don’t. Don’t call them over here. I won’t hurt you.”
Naida lay back on the floor, keeping hold of Hayley’s wrist. “I haven’t felt healing powers like this since my father.” She looked at Hayley and smiled. “You haven’t cured the madness, but one of you two has the touch that I need. I’m not sure which one, but it is either you or your werewolf friend. Have one of the others bring more tranquilizers, for you have taken the rest from my body.”
Jeremy was the one who yelled for Bill. “Bill, she’s awake. Hayley and I can’t move without making her go, um, coo coo, again. Can you bring more tranquilizers?”
Bill and Andy stopped arguing to move over to Naida and the others. “Nay?”
“It’s me, Bill. One of them has the touch I need to help me, though I don’t know how. Hurry and knock me out, please. Get me somewhere where I can’t hurt people.” Naida felt the tears roll down her eyes and started to spasm. Jeremy and Hayley’s hands were the only ones holding her down. “God, just give me the damned shot, Billy!”
Bill nodded and injected her with more of the tranquilizers. She smiled up at him for a moment before her eyes closed and she was gone. Jeremy and Hayley pulled back from her and looked at each other. “How are we going to tell which one of us is the one that calms her?”
“I hate to say this, Jeremy, but the only way to do that would be to put you alone in a room with her. We’ll let her rest for a while before we try that though. Give her some time to recover.” Bill scooped her up gently and started to carry her into the containment areas. “Follow me and I’ll show you where you can stay until we get everything settled.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
A few hours later, Jeremy was sitting outside the containment cells talking to a completely insane Naida. She had only been awake an hour, but he had been here the whole time talking with her.
After he had helped drug her, he had gone around the office and found hundreds of people who knew her, asking them all numerous questions about her. Chloe, Brendon, Nia, Ray, and Brianna had been the ones who knew the most about her. And Spencer, her newly returned brother. He had been a plethora of information, seeming to want to find a cure as bad as Jeremy now did.
The stories about Naida Walker’s bravery in both her previous life and the life she had with her former husband were enough to make Jeremy wanted to help her more. They were also enough to make him realize that she was the young Naida Poole he had known as a teenager in combat training. This is why he found it strange that he was drawn solely to the task of helping her. Hayley, of course, was drawn too, but Jeremy made sure he got the first go at helping her.
“Jeremy Davis, huh? And you’re in a band? Interesting. I was in a band once, but we sang underwater so it would sound really bad to people like you.”
“People like me? What do you mean by people like me, Naida?” Jeremy looked at her to see if she even made note that he knew her name without her giving it to him.
“Land walkers. Those who have never been underwater for days and days, just listening to the soothing sound of the ocean. People like you! You would be locked up where I come from. We don’t like Land Walkers. Walker … that’s my last name, you know? I was married once. He was wonderful, but he let them kill our child. Did I tell you that? They came, and he couldn’t do anything. They threw him off a mountain. It was horribly wonderful. No … that’s not right.” Naida’s face glossed over with confusion.
“What are you thinking about, Naida?” Jeremy moved closer to the glass, trying to see what she was thinking on her face.
“It wasn’t wonderful! It was horrible! I’m alone. All I love, gone. I should die too!”
“No, Naida, we don’t want that.” Jeremy let her see his concern for her.
Naida frowned and moved closer to the glass, stroking the glass where his hand was. “Why would you not want me to die? You just met me.”
“No, Naida, I knew you years ago. Think back in your memory to the training school on the beach? Do you remember me now?”
Naida tilted her head to the side and realization dawned on her. “Jeremy! I remember you! You were the one who stopped those that were mocking me for being afraid of the water!” She frowned. “But you probably mocked me behind my back, oh yes.”
Jeremy called for one of the guards. He stole the keys and let himself into the room. “Naida, listen to me. Did I ever hurt you? Did I ever mock you?”
Naida backed up and shook her head. “No, but that was only in the open. What about behind close doors?”
“I never did anything to you behind close doors that I wasn’t willing to do to you out in the open.”
Naida stood in the corner and looked at him, face blank, emotionless. Anger went across her face and she flew at him. “LIAR!” She hit him hard in the chest and sent him into the glass, putting his back against it while she shoved at his chest.
Her hands touched the skin at his neck and she stopped hitting him, looking up into his face. “Oh my God, Jeremy, I’m so sorry.”
Jeremy had expected some kind of fight, thinking it would be the only way to get her to touch him. What he hadn’t expected was for his touch to be the one to actually calm her. Hayley was the one with all the power. Jeremy was just a werewolf, barely having Alpha status. “Naida, are you okay?”
Naida nodded as Jeremy’s arms went around her. She felt the tears come to her eyes and wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her head into his shoulder. “Thank you, thank you. I don’t think I can take it much longer. If I don’t find out how to get rid of this soon, I’m going to have to have someone kill me. I can’t do it, I just can’t.”
Jeremy sighed, laying his head on hers as he held her to him. If his was the touch that could keep her sane, then he was the one that would have to cure her. But he was going to need the help of everyone else upstairs. “Come on, Naida. We’re going upstairs to see if the others have any ideas on what’s wrong with you.”
“I can’t, Jeremy. As soon as I step away from you, I’ll go crazy again.”
Jeremy moved away from her but took her hand, interlacing his fingers with hers. “Have you gone crazy again?”
“No.” Naida looked almost shocked that just holding his hand was helping her keep sane. It was the smallest amount of skin, but it was the only thing keeping her from trying to kill someone else.
“Then we’ll just have to stay like this until we figure out what’s wrong with you.” Jeremy smiled and pushed open the door of the containment cell, ignoring the protests of the guard. He would take her upstairs to Rick and Spencer as well as the others and see if anyone knew what was going on. If they didn’t, he guessed it was up to him and Naida. He was almost sure that that meant she was going to be like this forever.
