England 1396
A harsh winter came and went, the pack had been forced to roam to the very ends of England to find food; but winter had finally relinquished its strangle-hold on the land and spring had indeed come roaring in like an enraged lion. It seemed like overnight the months of scarcity ended and food was once again easy to come by.
Zack crouched low and didn’t move a hair; he had become quite adept at hunting during the long winter. Without a twitch to betray the movement Zack sprang straight up into the air and landed solidly on his prey.
The small field mouse was caught between his two white paws; the terrified creature squeaked in fright and then froze. Zack crouched down so that he was near eye level with it and then pulled his paws apart and barked playfully. The mouse scampered away immediately into the tall grass and the game was on again. James, drowsing in the sun a few feet away, raised his head to watch Zack go crashing through the grass after the small rodent, he snorted and went back to his nap.
Zack played with the mouse a little longer before he abandoned that game and began trying to coax James to play with him. The larger wolf merely raised one of his massive paws and pushed him over before he returned to his nap. Zack pouted a moment before he resumed his efforts with zeal. Zack had to end his new game early when Matt’s low, husky voice echoed through the forest calling them to him.
Zack and James trotted into the clearing they were currently calling home and found Matt and Brian in their human forms.
“Zachary,” Matt looked a little troubled, the usual warm smile he was always greeted with was distracted, “we need to start desensitizing you.”
Brian walked over to him and wrapped him in a hug, nuzzling his neck. Throughout the winter Brian and Zack had warmed up to each other and were quickly becoming inseparable. Zack licked his face and when Brian let him go he ran behind a tree where he had stashed his clothes and a moment later he reemerged wearing a pair of dark brown trousers. Matt pulled him close to his chest when he scurried over to him, he held him tightly, “I love you.” His whisper was low enough that the others wouldn’t hear Zack looked up at him, confused by his strange mood.
“What’s ‘desensitizing’? Will it hurt?” He mumbled, he pressed his nose into the crook of his neck and inhaled his wonderful scent. Matt sighed and held him tighter, “Yes.”
Zack shivered a little and pressed closer to him. Brian walked up slowly holding something in his hand. Zack watched him a little concerned but he didn’t try to pull away when Brian grabbed his hand and pressed a flashing sliver blade against his palm.
The pain was instantaneous, his eyes widened and he let out a hoarse scream and tried to jerk his hand away, but Brian had an iron grip on him. It felt like he had grabbed a white hot piece of metal right out of the blacksmith’s furnace; he yelped incessantly and struggled to get away from Matt.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, what’d I do, I’m sorry.” He whimpered, the pain was making him dizzy and the blaze was spreading up his arm.
“Oh, Zachary. No, no, you did nothing wrong, I’m sorry, hold on angel.” Matt’s voice was strained.
Zack cried out and before the action registered he bit down as hard as he could on the soft skin of Matt’s neck. His small human teeth could never cause any harm, but the surprise and the flash of pain were enough for Matt to loosen his grip for a moment, Zack ripped himself free and sprang away from the two before he slipped out of his pants, shifted, and disappeared into the deep green underbrush.
He hid under a fragrant bush, shivering and licking his burning paw, whimpering pitifully. He was scared and hurt that Matt and Brian had done that to him, and James had done nothing to help him. He whimpered again and huddled closer to the cool ground.
“Zachary…Zachary, come out.” James’ voice was close; the soft tones put Zack on edge.
“Zachary I know you’re under the bush,” He crouched down and looked into Zack’s hiding place with a small smile on his lips, “clever to hide under a flowering bush, but your scent is far too unique to hide.”
Zack whimpered and scooted back further into his bush.
“C’mon little one, no one’s going to hurt you.” James placed his hand a little in front of the bush; Zack stretched his neck forward and delicately sniffed his fingers. He inched forward a little bit at a time until he was free of the bush. He stood next to James with his tail held firmly between his legs and his head hung low.
“Zachary,” James sat down and scratched soothingly behind his ears, “I know it hurts, but really in the greater scheme of things it will help you.”
Zack turned to look at him questioningly and a little wary. James grabbed a small bundle from next to him, “Here,” he handed it to Zack, “go change, I’ll explain.”
Zack licked his hand and trotted off to change. When he came back James was reclining peacefully in the sun, Zack tried not to stare at his lean body, but his eyes nonetheless flashed over him and he ended up flushing apple red with embarrassment. He timidly sat next to him again and waited for him to start talking.
“From what I’ve learned over the centuries, we once considered ourselves immortal; there wasn’t a sickness or plague that could weaken us, which is still true. Weapons were useless against us, the same with poisons. We lived and roamed without fear of man for centuries.” He paused and looked at Zack; the young wolf was watching him with rapt attention.
“We aren’t immortal Zachary, exceptionally long-lived, yes, but we have our weaknesses. Most of our faults can only be exposed by our own kind, but there is one that normal humans have learned to exploit, silver. Silver is poison to us; the first wolves that encountered this thought it was the end of us, but they found that if they exposed themselves to it a little at a time, over the centuries the effect became less and less until lost almost all of its potency. Silver is far more dangerous to newborns than it is older wolves. If a hunter were to injure you with one of their silver blades or arrows you would die in excruciating pain within minutes, if that.”
Zack shuddered as he thought about the pain and edged a little closer to the bigger man. James looked at him for a second before he resumed his story.
“You will naturally begin to grow immune to the effect of silver, but we need to desensitize you faster. Hunters have been out in greater force in the past few decades; young wolves are being cut down almost as soon as they’re born.”
“What’s a Hunter?” Zack whispered.
“Hunters are part of an ancient order, some believe it was created with the birth of the first wolf, their sole purpose is to erase us from this world.”
“Why?”
James sighed and shook his head, “I have no idea, no one has ever lived long enough to find out.”
Zack shivered in the warm sun and looked fearfully into the dense underbrush around them, “How do they know what we are?”
“Ironically enough they are something like us, through some kind of black majik they combine with a spirit guide, a wolf, and they can find us as easily as we can find each other. The problem is, since they aren’t truly our wolf brethren we can’t find them, they’re the perfect spies and assassins.”
They sat in silence for a few minutes before Zack’s tremulous voice broke the silence, “Will they do it again?”
James glanced at him and then nodded, “I know it hurts Zachary, but it needs to be done. You’re much to special to lose to some ruthless barbarian with a silver blade.” He whispered, Zack blushed and looked at the ground. A companionable silence fell over them again.
“He loves you,” James’ voice was soft, “after you ran off I was afraid he’d carve his heart out with the blade.”
Zack felt his breath catch, the very thought of Matt hurting himself made him ill, James wrapped an arm around his waist, “He’s fine, beside himself with worry, but fine.”
Zack still didn’t calm down, he had to see Matt okay, not take someone else’s word for it.
Zack burst into the clearing with James trotting in a little ways behind; Matt was pacing worriedly. Zack tackled him at full speed and sent them both rolling into a nearby bush.
“I take it you found him.” Brian laughed, snuggling under James’ arm. James smiled and shook his head, “He is a clever pup. He stayed in the river and then managed to worm his way under a Quickthorn. If the wind hadn’t kicked up I would’ve gone right past him.”
Matt dragged himself out of the bush with Zack licking him incessantly, he laughed and pulled Zack close to him, burying his face in his scruff. Zack surprisingly changed in his arms and twisted around to lock his arms around Matt’s neck.
“I’m sorry, I won’t runaway again, I’m sorry.” Zack whispered against his soft skin. Matt sighed and held him tighter, “I love you Zachary.” Was all he said. Zack looked up at him, with raven strands of his hair in his eyes, “I like that.” He whispered. Matt looked at him questioningly.
“The way you said my name, it sounded like Zacky. I like that.” He murmured sheepishly, Matt smiled and kissed his forehead.
Germany 1452
“Look at how big it is! I’ve never seen so many people, can we go look around some more?” if Zack had been in his wolf for he would’ve been turning circles in his excitement. As a human he was practically bouncing next to Matt as he looked around the beautiful city.
“Zack, I know you’re excited, but you need to calm down. We need to blend in.” Matt chuckled.
“You’re obvious enough as it is, we don’t need everyone remembering a raven-haired, green eyed, overly excited foreigner.” Brian grumbled. Matt shot him a look and Zack immediately fell silent, he ducked his head and let his longish black hair fall into his eyes and hide his burning blush.
“Brian hush, you did the same thing when we first left Italy; Zack we’ll go look around some more when it gets a little later.” Matt said.
Brian grumbled something but didn’t argue further.
They were staying at an abandoned cottage on the outskirts of the town, the original occupants had died of the plague and no one had sought to reclaim it. Zack was back and forth from wolf to human as he waited impatiently for it to get ‘later’.
“Gods Zachary will you hold still for half a minute!?” Brian snapped as the youngest again ran from the window to the door and shifted back to his wolf form. Jimmy snickered and went to find Matt, who was to busy to pay attention to them. Zack tucked his tail and laid down in front of the window for a minute before he was back up and pacing through the house again.
“Zack you have, in theory, forever, the country is not going to go anywhere.” Brian was rubbing his temple as the fluffy red and white wolf darted past him again.
“Matt, I’ll go out with him, we won’t go far; he’s going to drive Brian insane.” Jimmy laughed as an irritated bark came from the other room. The Alpha had taken up residence in the kitchen area, mostly to keep a certain, hyper, fuzzy, red and white distraction out of the way. He was standing by the table reading over a yellowed piece of paper. Matt looked up when James spoke and then toward the other room, “There’s been a lot of Hunter activity here lately.” He murmured, “I had actually wanted to talk to an old friend today, but he and his pack have either been destroyed or they’ve been forced out.”
James’ eyes widened a little, “How do you know?”
“We walked right through their territory today, down the middle of their Pack Center.” Matt rubbed his forehead tiredly. James whined quietly and rested his chin on Matt’s shoulder.
“But, he is going to send Brian over the edge,” he sighed as Brian yelled again, “I have to get some things done.” he turned and looked James in the eye, “Don’t let him out of your sight, if anything seems wrong, run.”
James gave a curt nod and then went to get Zack.
Zack stuck close to Jimmy even though he was bursting with curiosity, he only wandered a few feet away before he trotted back to nose the bigger wolf reassuringly. When they were close enough to the city they changed to their human forms, got dressed, and walked into the town.
“Why are they staring at us?” Zack whispered fearfully, few of the people on the street were openly staring at them but they were all shooting them looks of distrust and a little fear.
“Brian can be…crude at times, but he is a survivor,” James said softly, “You are a gem in a coal mine Zachary. Black hair with bright green eyes is not common.”
Zack walked closer to him and tried to keep his head down, but soon he forgot about the strange looks and became enthralled with the large majestic city.
The small village he had grown up in was nothing like this, even when they had roamed around England during the winter he hadn’t seen so many gargantuan houses and churches. The structures seemed to leap into the very sky daring God to strike them down; the massive stained glass windows caught the light and glimmered like a thousand gems on the cobblestones below them.
They stayed clear of the town center where throngs of people gathered; heckling, shouting their wares and hordes of children and dogs raced through screaming and barking, combining to make a deafening cacophony to their sensitive ears. The circled around the main square scenting the tantalizing smells of roasting meat and herbs from some of the vendors for the better part of an hour. Zack was in love, the place was beautiful and it had some of the most delicious smelling food he’d ever had the pleasure of sniffing.
“Zack, it’s getting late and Matt will have my tail if you’re out here after dark.” James said. Zack looked up at him curiously, “Why are you guys so worried?” his green eyes were flecked with gold in the setting sun. James sighed and glanced around, “There are Hunters crawling all over this place, we shouldn’t be separated long, especially after dark.”
Zack looked around and pressed closer to his larger friend as they started heading away from the city.
They were walking past a darkening alley when Zack pulled up short.
“What?” James took a more protective stance and scoured the area for whatever had upset him. Zack didn’t answer and instead darted down the alley, James snarled quietly and took off after him.
He found the smaller man kneeling by a heap of rags, “Zachary have you lost your mind?! You could have run straight into a trap!”
Zack looked up at him pleadingly, “How do I help him?”
James stared at him for a second before he smelled it, the thick cloying smell of infected blood. There was a wolf nearby and he’d been poisoned.
“James, he’s hurt, how do I help him?” Zack tugged his hand to get his attention back.
“Where is he?” James whispered, he looked behind them to check the entrance and then crouched down next to Zack. Suddenly the rags shifted and a pained whine echoed through the dark alley. The man rolled over, his brown eyes were bright with pain and the silver of the blade sticking out of his stomach glinted dully in the low light.
“Hilfe. Bitte. Hilfe mich, bitte.” His pleading voice was soft and fading, a thick trail of black blood oozed out of the corner of his mouth.
“Jesus, move Zack, hold his head up so he doesn’t choke.” James pulled the rags off of his abdomen and slid a sharp nail across the soft skin there.
“What are you d-doing?” Zack was trying to keep the dying man calm while James cut him open.
“It’s a special knife Hunters use, it’ll go in, but if you try to pull it out you’ll drag out their bowels with it.” He said distractedly as he warily began to gently tug at it.
Zack paled and tightly gripped the bleeding man’s shoulder. James worked quickly but carefully as he tried to pull the deadly blade from the small man.
“Hilfe, bitte. Hilfe.” He whispered distantly.
“Ja, wir helfen dir.” James murmured soothingly.
“What’s he saying?” Zack asked; brushing his damp brown hair out of his eyes.
“He’s asking for help, I told him we would.” James said, he let out a breath and slowly pulled the wicked looking blade out.
Zack felt sick as he looked at it, it was at least seven inches long and it was unlike any other blade he had ever seen. It was extremely ornate, there were sections cut out of it so the sides of it curved upward like dancing flames. James was right, it could easily slip into to someone but it would rip them inside out if it was simply pulled out. The blood that was still clinging to it was blackening before his eyes as the silver poisoned and destroyed the cells.
“We need to get out of here, now. The Hunters are probably still searching for him and it won’t be long before they pick up the trail again.” James said scooping the injured man up. Zack stood and they silently slipped out of the alley into the night.
“What is that?” Matt didn’t sound angry so Zack took that as a good sign. James stayed back, still holding their stray pup; Zack ran up and quickly whispered what had happened. Matt remained mostly impassive but gave James a short nod and then went back inside holding Zack to his side.
“Have you finally settled down?” Brian asked tiredly as they walked in. Zack pounced on him for his answer and the two began wrestling around on the floor while Matt shook his head and went back to his work. James came in and gently set the injured wolf on the floor.
“What is that?” Brian asked suspiciously, James slipped into his wolf form and lay down beside the small man; he growled when Brain untangled himself from Zack and moved closer. The growl made Brian pause; he slipped into his own wolf form and bristled before he growled back lowly. Before either could spring at each other Zack jumped in between them barking.
He ran over and licked Brian’s cheek and then pranced back and did the same thing to James. Zack ran back over to Brian and nudged him toward the kitchen area where Matt was, at first the bigger wolf didn’t move, but Zack was persistent and eventually he grudgingly went to the other room. James relaxed and licked the young wolf’s cheek before he settled down and started to doze.
“Brian you have the worst temper.” Matt said distractedly when the large black wolf finally made his way into the kitchen. He growled and changed back to his human form, “He started it.”
“And I bet he would’ve finished it.” Matt chuckled. Brian snarled and went to the other side of the room to sulk. Zack trotted into the room and started over to where Brian was pouting, but he slipped to his wolf form and snarled at him. Zack tucked his tail, laid his ears back, and hit the floor all in one fluid motion. He whimpered once before he started inching his way back to Matt. Matt glared at his centuries old friend, “You have no reason to be angry at him.”
Brian snarled at him too and started pacing, hackles up, and a continuous low growl rumbling from his chest.
“You can be angry at me all you want I don’t care.” Matt shrugged; he reached down and easily pulled Zack’s small cowering frame off the floor onto his lap. Zack tucked his head under his chin and watched Brian pace angrily on the other side of the room.
“You’re fine Zachary,” he whispered, “Like the five days a month a woman must bleed, every century or so Brian has a decade when he needs to be angry at everything.” He chuckled when Brian stopped his pacing to give him a cold glare.
“What? You’ve been like that ever since I met you. I’m just glad you’re getting it out of the way early this time.”
Brian snarled viciously and jumped toward him, Matt didn’t flinch, but Zack did.
Zack’s own bone-chilling growl echoed through the room and he sprang off of Matt’s lap straight at Brian, he caught the larger wolf mid-air by the neck and dragged him back down to earth. Brian hit the ground with a yelp and sprang away from the snarling red and white wolf.
“Zachary!” Matt jumped up almost as surprised as Brian. He pulled Zack into his arms and whisked him into the other room with James and the sleeping man.
James was on his feet with his ears pricked forward, he watched Matt warily; the Alpha paid him no attention.
“Stay here.” Matt said softly; Zack whimpered and cowered to the ground, Matt disappeared back into the kitchen area. Zack slunk to the darkest corner of the room and curled into a miserable ball. James woofed quietly, Zack peeked at him but didn’t move. James whined and walked over to him and licked the top of his head, Zack shivered and whined pitifully. Matt walked back into the room, James moved away from him so he could kneel in his place.
“Zacky what were you thinking?” he whispered, he didn’t sound angry, he sounded almost awed. Nonetheless Zack curled tighter into his little ball and whimpered.
“Ah Zacky, just when I think I have you figured out you do something totally unexpected.” He ran his hands over Zack’s soft, warm coat soothingly. Slowly Zack began to relax under his gentle caresses; he snuck a quick look at him. Matt smiled warmly and he uncurled more until he could sit up and look at him more clearly.
“Why did you attack Brian?”
“He what?” James was in his human form staring at Zack with complete disbelief, “I thought Brian went after him.”
Matt shook his head; Zack shyly hid behind Matt and changed he pressed close to his back and shivered in the cool night air.
“Zack,” Matt’s voice was a little sterner, “why did you attack Brian?”
“I thought he was going to hurt you.” He mumbled against Matt’s warm shoulder. Matt turned around and blinked, “You thought he was going to hurt me?”
Zack nodded embarrassed, why he had thought Brian would even think of hurting Matt was completely beyond him. Matt shook his head, “You are the most complicated wolf I’ve ever met. One minute you’re cowering behind me the next you’re leaping straight into the line of fire.” He pulled Zack close and kissed his forehead, “But I must say you keep things interesting.” He smiled; Zack gave him his own timid answering smile before he shifted back to his wolf form. Matt chuckled and easily picked up his smaller lover and took him back into the kitchen.
Brian was pacing the length of the kitchen when Matt walked in he stopped and sat down a few feet away from Matt with his head cocked to the side.
“Simple misunderstanding Brian, you’re fine.” Matt whispered. Zack squirmed in his arms until Matt set him on the floor. He snuck behind Matt with his tail low and peeked at Brian bashfully. Brian switched into his human form and offered a small smile, “You certainly know how to put me in my place pup.” He whispered. Matt laughed lowly and stepped to the side, fully exposing Zack. The small red and white wolf timidly took a step forward, Brian shook his head and walked over to him, “I’m not mad pup, surprised yes, but not mad.” He said kneeling down and scratching behind his ears; Zack relaxed and licked his cheek.
“Now, what was this misunderstanding?” he asked pulling Zack into his arms.
“He thought you were really going to attack.” Matt said running his fingers through Zack’s exposed belly fur. Brian looked down at Zack’s fuzzy face, “You are just a bundle of surprises little one.” He shook his head, “I’d never hurt Matt, I was just…aggravated.” he glared at Matt.
“Careful or I’ll set him loose on you again.” Matt chuckled; Zack wriggled in his arms until he set him down, then he disappeared into the living room area. He came back a few moments later with a pair of pants on and snuggled against Brian’s warm body. The bitter smell that had been with Brian on the night of their meeting was gone, it had been replaced with something that was almost flowery. He snickered a little when he
pictured irritable Brian with a crown of daisies.
“What?” Brian’s voice didn’t rumble through his chest like Matt’s did and Zack found that it wasn’t as enjoyable listening to him speak or sing when he was cuddled against him.
“Nothing.” He laughed again when the picture came back. Brian wrapped an arm around his waist and tickled his side, Zack snorted and tried to get away but the older wolf held him firmly.
“What is this ‘nothing’ you keep laughing at?” he asked once Zack was laughing so hard he could barely draw a breath.
“Nothing.” Zack giggled, Brian started tickling him again, “Matt, help!” he laughed and tried to swat Brian’s fingers away. Matt was leaning against a wall watching them with an amused smile on his face, “He’ll stop if you tell him.” Was all he said.
“Okay, okay, I’ll tell!” Zack giggled, “Flowers.” He snickered again when Brian gave him a totally confused look.
“You were laughing at flowers?”
“You smell like flowers.” Zack snickered, he slipped out of his arms and hid next to Matt still laughing. Brian huffed, “I do not smell like flowers.”
Matt looked at Zack and laughed, “He doesn’t smell like flowers.”
Zack looked at him confused, “What does he smell like to you?”
“Nothing that pleasant.” Matt snickered, Brian smacked his arm, “What makes you think I smell like flowers?” Brain asked still glaring at Matt.
“Its not very strong…mostly you smell like smoke and ice,” He turned and looked at Matt, “You smell like pine trees, dirt, and rocks, James smells like…he smells like spring.”
Matt looked at him for a moment and then looked up at Brian, “Tell me Zachary…what did Bryce smell like?” he asked quietly; Zack shuddered and snuggled closer to him, “Bad milk, the other two were nasty too.”
“Interesting.” Matt murmured.
“What does the new wolf smell like Zack?” Brian asked slowly. Zack furrowed his brow, “I can’t tell, the silver makes him smell nasty.”
“Its late Zack and you’ve had a busy day, go to bed.” Matt said a little distractedly; Zack looked up at him not the least bit fooled by the ploy, but he relented and kissed his cheek and went to curl up with James.
Zack woke up the next morning with a raspy growl coming from somewhere behind him, he jumped up and snarled savagely as fearful thoughts of the return of Bryce darted through his mind. The growl turned to a scared whimper and then a yelp of pain.
“Zacky, relax, its alright Zachary calm down.” Jimmy’s voice cut through the two sounds and ended both of them. As Zack finally woke all the way up he realized the growl had been coming from the new wolf, he was looking from Zack to Jimmy fearfully.
“Hush Hundchen, wir werden nicht Sie verletzen. Sie sind jetzt sicher.”* He murmured, the young wolf relaxed a little but still stayed on guard.
“What happened?” Matt wrapped Zack in a hug and looked at the terrified young man in front of him curiously.
“He woke up and scared Zachary and now he’s scared because Zachary scared him.” Jimmy said rolling his eyes, Zack blushed and looked at the floor; Matt snorted.
“Was heissen Sie?” Jimmy asked quietly, the young man scooted a little closer to him and watched Matt warily, “Ich heisse Johnny.” He whispered.
“Wie alt sind Sie?” Jimmy carefully sat down next to him; Johnny relaxed even more and snuggled against his side.
“Ich bin dreiunddreizig jarhe alt.” he said sleepily, Jimmy moved so he could wrap an arm around him.
“Wo sind Ihre Familie?”
“Tot.” he sighed sadly.
“Alright,” Jimmy said, as the small wolf slipped back into sleep. “His name is Johnny, he’s thirty-three, and his pack is dead.”
“Well,” Matt sighed, “That answers my questions and it also means we need to go. Once he’s awake we’re leaving.”
Jimmy nodded and pulled Johnny closer; Zack looked outside at the cloudy day and shuddered.
**The translations go in order of the conversation:**
“Hush puppy, we’re not going to hurt you. You’re safe now.”
“What’s your name?”
“My name is Johnny.”
“How old are you?”
“I’m thirty-three years old.”
“Where is your family?”
“Dead.”
A/N: Good Lord kids, I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to update! I’ve decided that I’m *Never* writing a Johnny Christ oriented story, I’m sorry I just can’t write him and he’s made this chapter exceedingly difficult >_<
Sorry Johnny, I love ya’, but you just complicate my stories.
I just finished up with school, now all I have to worry about is work so updates should be coming *a lot* more frequently =)
And…I have a confession to make…I’ve been distracted with two other stories that I’ve started <.< >.>
But I refuse to put them up until this is done so I should be able to post at least three chapters or so when I finally get them up
