Chapter Six
A week had passed since Emily had walked into the house to find David and Cook in a very compromising position. David still wasn’t very happy that she had seen his Cook naked. He had often wished that he had been the one who had been in the shower that day but Cook kept reminding him that it was alright and there was really nothing he should be worrying about. Still, David couldn’t help that nagging feeling that there really was something to worry about. Something about how Emily had taken the whole thing so easily once she actually understood unnerved him. Cook didn’t understand why and David wasn’t about to attempt to explain it. It was rather complicated in his mind.
Now he sat on the couch leaning forward with a mug of hot tea in his hands. Cook had prepared the tea for him and he was grateful for it. He had had a rough week, going through some rehearsals and trying to keep the news that Cook was alive undercover. The two of them still weren’t ready to let the world know that Cook was back. They were going over and over in their minds how they were going to tell everyone. They had yet to come up with a solution.
David sipped his tea and looked out at the living room in front of him. Cook was currently napping upstairs in the bed that was now theirs rather than David’s and Emily’s. A lot had changed around the house since Emily had moved out. There had been some quick redecorating done and the bedroom looked quite different than it did when Emily had been living there. David was amazed at how much had changed in one short week. Cook had told him that anything could be done if you put your mind to it. And they had certainly put their minds to it. The house was much more masculine now than it had been when Emily lived there and David felt a bit more comfortable in his own home now that it wasn’t so feminine anymore.
Still, thinking about how it used to be and Emily unnerved him for some reason. He honestly didn’t know why and didn’t understand it one bit. He was happy that Emily had understood so well once she had figured out the connection between the naked man and David. However, something just didn’t sit right with him and he couldn’t put his finger on what it was. He had a gut feeling that he hadn’t seen the last of Emily and something told him there was more to her looking through that yearbook than just wanting to know about his past. However, he was trying not to let it bother him. It wasn’t exactly easy though. It was a nightmare.
Just then, his cell phone rang, snapping David out of his thoughts. He turned his head and looked at the phone for a moment, not really wanting to answer it but something in his gut told him that he should. So, sighing, he picked up the phone and flipped it open, pressing it to his ear. “Hello?” he said in a rather bored sounding tone, something that was very unlike him.
“David?” asked a voice and David sat up straight on the couch suddenly. It was Jason and David wondered if he was calling him because Ramiele was in labor. It had to be the reason. He could tell just by the tone in Jason’s voice. “David, are you there man?” the father-to-be asked him?
“Huh?” David said instinctively coming round and out of his sudden state of shock. “Oh yeah, sorry Jason,” he apologized. “What’s up?”
David heard Jason sigh over the phone before he spoke again. “It’s time. Ramiele is in labor. Could you grab Cook and come down to the hospital? Both of us want you guys to be here.” Did he just ask him to bring Cook with him? Yes, he did. He and Ramiele wanted both Davids to be present at the birth of their baby. Neither of them had wanted to know what the sex was so they had decided to keep it a surprise. Yes, that was rather hard because than you had to buy everything in mutual colors so that it would work for the baby whether it was a boy or a girl. “David?”
“Yeah, we’ll be there, just hang tight okay? Tell Ramiele not to pop the kid out yet.” He smiled and heard Jason laugh lightly on the other side of the line. “It’s not funny man, I’m being serious. I want to be there when she has it.”
“Chill David,” Jason replied. “It’s still going to be a while yet. She’s only four centimeters dilated. She has to reach ten before she can start pushing.” David sighed. He was anxious to meet the kid and it was not going to help that it was going to take a long time. Oh well, there was nothing that he could do about it.
“All right, just hang in there and we’ll be there in not time, I promise,” he said finally, smiling into the phone.
“Good. I’ll see you guys when you get here,” Jason replied.
“Right, see you when we get there,” David confirmed and he flipped his phone shut, staring at it for a few moments. He couldn’t believe it, Jason and Ramiele were mere hours away from being first time parents and they wanted him to be present at their baby’s birth.
Turning on his heel, he tossed the phone on the couch and began taking the stairs up to the second floor two at a time. He dashed into the bedroom where Cook was sound asleep on the bed. Not wanting to have to shake his lover awake, David paused at the doorway for a moment to watch him sleep. Then, he broke into a run and jumped onto the bed so hard, that Cook bounced up into the air just a bit, his eyes shooting open in surprise. He was awake all right, that was for sure. David couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of his lover freaking out. “Relax silly, it’s just me,” he said and Cook gave him a look of false anger.
“What’s the big idea coming in here and waking me up like that?” he asked, still with that false look of anger on his voice.
“Get a shirt, socks, and shoes on and let’s go. Ramiele’s in labor and both she and Jason, want us to be there.” He put a hand up to silence him before Cook could even begin to say something. “Yes, both of us,” he repeated. Cook just grinned at him and jumped off the bed.
“Well, what are we waiting for than!” he cried, grabbing a shirt and pulling it on over his head. David laughed and began to pull on his shoes as Cook pulled a pair of socks out of the drawer. The two of them had managed to go shopping for a new wardrobe for Cook without anyone catching the fact that Cook was alive and well. How they had pulled that one off, David was still trying to figure out. It had been shier luck, no doubt about that. He silently thanked God for it.

The next thing David knew, the two of them were in Cook’s car, headed for the hospital where they would meet up with Jason and he would take them into Ramiele’s room. It was so exciting that David could hardly contain his joy. Honestly, you’d think he was the one who was about to be the father the way he kept squealing excitedly the whole way there. The thing was, David absolutely loved children and hoped to one day have some of his own but the idea would be a little hard if he was going to be with Cook. On top of that, David didn’t know how Cook would feel about having kids. He decided to leave that discussion for another day.
As they stopped at a light, David glanced in the rearview mirror, narrowed his eyes, and looked behind them. Cook caught the strange action out of the corner of his eye and turned his head to glance at David for a second before returning his eyes to the road. He didn’t say anything about it but didn’t really think there was much reason to. He figured if David were to continue to act odd, than he would say something to him.
For the rest of the drive to the hospital, Cook noticed that David kept periodically looking behind them after checking the rearview mirror. When they finally pulled into a parking space, he shut the engine off and turned to look at him. “Now what was that all about?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“We were being followed,” David responded without hesitation. He glanced behind them once more but it seemed that the so-called follower was nowhere in sight any more. Cook raised his eyebrow even higher.
“What gives you that idea?” he asked. He couldn’t understand why David was acting this way. He figured that it might have been the fact that he knew now what had happened to Cook and he was paranoid that someone else would attempt to take Cook away from him. Cook didn’t know if that was the truth but it was the most logical reason that he could come up with.
“I know that car, the one that was behind us,” David replied, tearing his eyes from behind them and looking back at Cook. “They followed us all the way until we turned into the parking lot.” Cook looked unconvinced.
“David, whoever it was, was probably going the same way that we were and you don’t know that you know that car. Many people could have the same car,” he said, trying to reassure him that they were not being followed. David, however, shook his head.
“No, I’ve seen that car many times and I know the license plate. That wasn’t just anyone,” he said, glancing down at his lap. “It was Emily’s car,” he said in a soft voice a few minutes later. This time, Cook raised both his eyebrows as his eyes widened and he himself, glanced behind them although by now, the car was long gone. He was sure some of the people who were walking across the path in front of them were wondering what they were doing just sitting there in the car.
“But why would Emily want to follow us and why now? It doesn’t make sense David,” he said shaking his head. David glanced behind them one more time, sighed, and got out of the car.
“Come on, our friends are waiting for us,” he said. Cook didn’t protest. He too got out of the car and the two of them headed into the hospital.
In all truth, David hadn’t responded to Cook’s question because he honestly didn’t have an answer for him. He knew Emily’s calm demeanor had been too good to be true but he still didn’t know why she was following them and why she had chosen this day to follow them. Did she hope to do something under the presence of a couple of witnesses? Wait, he was getting ahead of himself. How could he know whether Emily was plotting anything or not? He supposed that he was just kind of paranoid about the whole thing. Cook had been abducted four years ago and he had only just escaped a week and two days prior to the present moment. Anything that seemed out of place was bound to strike something up in David’s mind. Emily following them was one of those things. Maybe Cook was right, maybe she had simply just been going in the same direction until the two of them had reached the hospital but David doubted it. It was too close for comfort to easily be a coincidence. Though he wouldn’t mention that to Cook.
The two of them walked through the hospital in silence. Cook had asked the nurse at the information desk in the lobby which way it was to the Maternity Ward and she had directed them to take the connecting hallway down to the elevators at the end and then take the elevator up to the fourth floor. They were to then turn right and proceed through a set of double doors and that was the Maternity Ward. Both David and Cook thanked the nurse and left the station without another word. Now they were riding up in the elevator, still not saying anything to each other. Cook glanced at David and David looked back at him, wondering exactly what was going to happen now.
The elevator dinged and the two of them stepped out, turning right like the nurse had instructed. Up ahead, they could see the set of double doors in question and a familiar person stood in front of doors, waiting for them to approach.
“Hello Jason,” David said when they reached the figure. Jason smiled and shook his head lightly, his long dreads swaying across his back. The now twenty-six year old looked no different than he had five years ago when they wee doing Idol. He turned and looked at Cook.
“It’s nice to see you David,” Jason said to Cook. Cook smiled and for a moment the two of them just stared at each other before they collided in a hug. David couldn’t help but grin at the reunion of the two friends. It was a long anticipated moment and he was happy that he could be there for it. “I’m glad that you’re okay,” Jason went on, wiping a single solitary tear from his eye. Cook smiled.
“How’s Ramiele?” David asked suddenly and Jason turned to face him, the smile plastered on his face once again.
“She’s doing fine. The nurse just checked her before I came out here to wait for you guys. She’s five centimeters now. Come on, I’ll take you to her,” Jason replied. David and Cook glanced at each other. David felt that Ramiele was dilating rather fast for a first time mother. After all, she had been just four centimeters when he’d talked to Jason on the phone. She had dilated a full centimeter in the time it had taken him and Cook to drive over to the hospital.
No one said anything as the two of them followed Jason through the double doors and into the Maternity Ward. A nurse with a clipboard looked up and smiled at them as she passed, heading into a room across the hall and shutting the door behind her. Jason shook his head and continued walking. He led them right down the corridor to a room at the very end. The door was closed and although it was his wife’s room, Jason politely knocked on it before turning the handle and entering the room. David and Cook followed him in and Jason shut the door behind them.
Ramiele was lying on the bed. She was hooked up to a baby monitor and her head was resting to one side. Her eyes were staring up at the TV above her. She seemed to be trying to concentrate on something relaxing and David didn’t blame her. She must have been in a lot of pain from all the contractions. She looked rather tired already, despite the fact that her eyes were wide open. A medical bracelet was fastened around her right wrist and an IV was in her left hand.
“They gave her an Epidural a few minutes before you got here. They were prepping her for it just as I was leaving the room to meet up with you guys out there,” Jason said, explaining the IV in Ramiele’s hand. David and Cook nodded and quietly walked up to the bed so they could visit with Ramiele. The girl gave a soft laugh at something on the TV as they approached.
“Hello Ramiele,” David said in a quiet voice. Ramiele turned her head to look at him and smiled. She took hold of his hand with her right hand, widening the smile across her face. He couldn’t help but smile back at her.
“Hello David,” she said. Her voice sounded tired but she didn’t’ seem to care. “I’m glad that you could make it,” she went on. David only smiled again. He gently kissed her hand and stepped back to allow Cook to get closer. When Ramiele saw him she leaned over, reaching her arms out, clearly wanting him to hug her. Cook did so gently and she lay back on her pillows.
Jason had taken a seat in a chair on the other side of the bed and he now had Ramiele’s left hand clasped tightly in his. He kissed it gently, rubbing the back of it with his thumb. He brought his other hand up to gently stroke her hair. He kissed her hand again. All three of them knew that Ramiele really should be getting some sleep. Now that her pain had been somewhat relieved if not completely, she really should be getting her rest. She was going to need all the energy she could get when it came time to push later.
“You should get some sleep,” Cook said to her and she looked at him for a moment. Jason kissed her hand again and she looked back at him.
“He’s right you know honey. You’re going to need your energy to push later,” he told her. Ramiele turned her head to look at David who just nodded his head in agreement. She sighed. It was clear to her that there was no use trying to argue with the three of them, especially if they were all in agreement about here getting some sleep. “Please?” Jason asked her in a gentle voice. She sighed again.
“All right, I’ll try and get some rest but I don’t know how successful I’ll be because I’m too excited to sleep. We’re finally going to have our baby Jason,” she said to him with a smile. Jason just smiled back and kissed her hand. She smiled again and slowly her eyes fluttered shut as she drifted off to sleep.
**********
Several hours later, David, Cook, and Jason found themselves coaxing Ramiele to push the baby out. The three of them had also taken the time to sleep some so that they would be prepared for the long night ahead of them. It was now approximately 3:43 in the morning and Ramiele had been pushing for the past hour. David and Cook were supporting her legs while Jason stood by the nurse watching the progress from that end and trying to coach Ramiele to push harder. He said that he could see the baby’s head but every time she would push, the head would barely drop down at all. The nurse said that was because Ramiele wasn’t pushing hard enough to get the baby to come down.
With much coaxing and encouragement from both Davids and her husband, Ramiele finally managed to push harder. The nurse had said that it wasn’t uncommon. Sometimes when a mother in labor was given an Epidural, it would take hold really well and the expect mother wouldn’t even feel the pressure when it was time to push. This was the case with Ramiele and the nurse had been watching the baby monitor so she could tell whenever Ramiele was having a contraction and tell her when to push.
“That’s it, that’s it, you’re doing good Ramiele,” the nurse said. “I think on the next contraction you may be able to get the baby’s head to crown,” she said. David was glad that he wasn’t watching the whole thing from Jason’s end, although it didn’t seem to bother Jason at all. From what he could tell, the nurse had two fingers pressed lightly inside Ramiele and she was attempting to stretch her out a bit to make way for the baby’s head to come through easier. She stayed in this position the whole time Ramiele was pushing. “Okay, you’re having another contraction dear,” she spoke a moment later, looking at the baby monitor. “Ready? Push!” Ramiele brought her head up and pushed down on herself with all her might, her eyes squeezing shut tight and her face screwed up in both concentration and pain. “That’s it, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Okay relax,” the nurse said and Ramiele collapsed against the pillows again, her breath letting out in a rush. “Okay, your crowning now and it looks like this baby has a lot of hair,” she said with a smile.
As the nurse left to go get the doctor for the remainder of the delivery, Jason moved from the position at the end of the bed to come up and give Ramiele a kiss, running his hands through her hair. “You’re doing great baby,” he said. Ramiele looked as though she were about to start crying. Tears were already leaking from her eyes and David felt bad for her. He knew he could never understand how much pain she was in right now but he knew that she was hurting and he just wanted it to be all right.
Just then, the doctor entered the room, followed by the nurse as well as two more nurses. He had his hands gloved and a blue smock over his clothes. There was a cap on his head and a mask over his face. He reached up and pulled a giant lamp that had been hanging overhead down a bit and turned it on so it was shining on the crown of the baby’s head. He looked at Ramiele and even though he couldn’t see it, David could tell that he was smiling at her.
“How we doing Ramiele?” the doctor asked in an encouraging voice. Ramiele gave a shaky laugh and groaned. “I know but it will be over really soon,” the doctor went on. He turned to look at the baby monitor screen. “Okay, Ramiele, on the count of three, I want you to give me one big push, okay?” Though it was hard to tell, Ramiele nodded her head. “Okay,” the doctor confirmed. “On, the count of three now. One…two…three, push!” He said and Ramiele lifted her head like she had before and pushed down on herself so hard her face was turning beet red. Her eyes were squeezed tight again and her face was screwed up, the pain of the push eminent from the cries that erupted her mouth. “That’s it Ramiele, keep going, keep going,” the doctor said. Jason had moved back to the end of the bed and his eyes were wide with awe. “Okay, the head is out,” the doctor said suddenly and David chanced a look down. Sure enough, the baby’s head was sticking out completely. His mouth dropped open, as he’d never seen such a sight.
On the other side of her, Cook was also looking down at the head that was poking out. His eyes were wide and it was clear by the look on his face that he didn’t think he’d ever find himself in this position. The doctor spoke again then.
“Okay, on the next contraction, you’re going to push once more and hopefully, you’ll push the baby out,” he said. “Ready?” he asked, glancing at the monitor and looking back at Ramiele. “Push!” Again, Ramiele lifted her head up and pushed down on herself, even harder than the previous times if possible. David looked down and watched as the baby’s shoulders came out with some difficulty. The rest of its torso and body followed easily after that and in the next instant, the sound of crying filled the room. “It’s a boy!” the doctor cried as he lifted the baby up for Ramiele, who had collapsed back on her pillows once more, to see. He set the baby down on Ramiele’s stomach as David cringed because just then the placenta came out. That was something he hadn’t wanted to see and he turned his attention to the baby that was screaming its lungs off. The nurses were cleaning the newborn off while he rested on his mother’s tummy.
A moment later, they’d carried the baby over to the warmer and the doctor had begun stitching up a small rip Ramiele had caused herself from pushing the baby out. “Seven pounds, four point six ounces!” a nurse called while another nurse took it down on a clipboard. “Twenty inches long!” the nurse said a moment later and the other nurse jotted that down too.
Jason, who had been over with the nurses watching them attend to his son, came over then and gave Ramiele a well-deserved kiss. He took her hand in his. “I’m so proud of you sweetheart. He seems to be healthy,” he said, a huge smile on his face and a tear in his eye. David felt like crying too and when he glanced over at Cook, he caught him wiping his eyes with his thumb.
**********
An hour later, Ramiele was sleeping soundly, the baby resting comfortably in her arms and all three of the guys had passed out in different parts of the room. Jason sat in his chair, his head resting on the bed and his hand clutching Ramiele’s. Cook was curled up in a chair and David was asleep in his lap. All five of them, the baby included, were exhausted. Who knew it could be so much work to bring a baby into the world, even if you weren’t the one pushing it out? Not any of them, that was for sure. They would end up sleeping until late into the next day, all five of them.
