At first James was convinced he wouldn’t be able to stomach the meat he had seen butchered, but once the aroma of roasting meat made its way to him he discovered how ravenous he really was. He was a little embarrassed at how much he scarfed down but the others ate just as much and he pushed aside his social graces and made sure he was full before he stopped eating.
The Koyra was in his usual place next to Matt. He was curled up on the ground seemingly asleep but ate when Matt handed him bits of meat. James watched the Koyra carefully trying to find what the other ‘peculiarities’ were. Like the claws he saw nothing; so he started theorizing about what they might be. They knew he could see in the dark, his eyes glowed (he shuddered at the memory), might he be able to hypnotize people like the Bergen? He thought back to the day before when they had been swimming and considered the possibility of super strength or maybe an unheard of amount of endurance. Could he regrow a limb? Maybe not a limb, but a digit? He could see how that would be helpful, but then again that would be helpful with every species. Losing a limb could be life threatening on most of the more primitive planets and they hadn’t evolved to regrow anything.
He picked at the remaining meat on a bone and sighed at his own fanciful imaginings. Johnny looked up at him with eyes bright with curiosity and he smiled gently, the little scout would be buzzing with questions for the next three days.
Finally they finished their meal and the Koyra roused himself enough to sit up and lean against Matt. James still found the captain’s ease with the Koyra unnatural. He had been trained to kill them without mercy and here he was even sharing a meal with one. James slightly shook his head and waited for Johnny to start throwing questions out.
“What else can you do?” Johnny was practically humming with the energy and Brian snorted. The Koyra pulled his legs against his chest, “Well, what do you already know about Koyra?” he asked quietly. Johnny thought for a moment, “Absolutely nothing.” He said brightly. Matt gave a short, rough laugh and the Koyra smiled a little, “That’s what I figured.” He said.
“The Koyra are from a cold planet,” he began, “that’s why our temperature is so much lower than yours.”
“You know where the Koyra home planet is?” Brian asked incredulously, “Why the hell haven’t you told anyone?”
The Koyra shook his head, “I don’t know where the home planet is, my parents emigrated to your planet when I was young. All my memories from that time are of dark and cold. They told me many things about the home planet but never where it was.”
Brian glared at him suspiciously but the Koyra continued totally ignoring him, “The differences between the Koyra and Api are more than just superficial skin, eye, and hair color. Not to brag, but I’m faster and stronger than any of you, my metabolism is more efficient, I can see farther, see in the dark, hear better, smell better, and I can feel the vibration of a heavy footstep from down a hallway.” He paused in his quiet narrative and James realized he wasn’t breathing; he forced himself to take a deep shuddering breath. He shot a glance over to Brian; the strategist was frozen, whether in horror or fascination he couldn’t tell.
“I wish I could do that.” Johnny said dreamily, “I’d be the best scout ever.”
Matt laughed quietly, “The Koyra don’t use scouts or spies.” He said. Johnny straightened, “Why not?” he said indignantly. Matt chuckled, “You heard him. They don’t need them. They can get all the information they need by listening to us from well outside the perimeter. If we wanted to keep them from listening we’d have to set up a massive perimeter and that’s just impractical.”
“What about a radiating perimeter?” Brian said. Matt shook his head, “Still impractical. We’d have to have three or four circles; in a large company sparing ten or so people to do patrols isn’t a big deal but in the smaller parties of only a dozen there’s no way to do it. And,” he continued, further destroying Brian’s idea, “They could easily take out the outer most rings and no one would know. They would just whittle our forces down by killing the two or three outer rings.”
Brian grumbled but didn’t argue the logic of his argument. They sat in silence for a moment, the Koyra looked like he was starting to doze again and Matt looked like he was about to join him.
“Are those the only differences?” James asked a bit more sharply than he intended but he didn’t like not knowing about this creature. Matt rubbed on of his eyes but the Koyra stayed in his near drowsing state.
“No,” the captain sighed, “I guess the biggest difference would be that they’re venomous.”
The three Api fell completely silent. James felt his mouth drop open but couldn’t find the willpower to close it. He realized he had stopped breathing again too and when his lungs began to ache he shuddered and took a breath, “What?” he croaked. Matt was half asleep again but woke himself up to further explain, “Their bite is poisonous.” He said tiredly, “Well maybe I should explain the bite.” He chuckled, he sat up straighter, “The Koyra have a nasty bite, and that’s without the bonus of venom. They can crack bones, I’ve seen Zack break a bone, and their teeth are also sharp. All of them, if one decides to bite you you’ll be leaving a good portion of yourself behind with them if you manage to get away. That’s when the venom comes in. If you manage to get out of the bite you won’t make it far, they use a diluted form of their own venom to coat their weapons and you know how devastating that can be.”
They all knew what a poisoned Koyra dagger could do to a soldier, James more so than the others; sixty-six percent mortality rate even with immediate serum injections. Even a small scratch could result in death. Once it was in the blood it began breaking down the blood cells, they couldn’t carry the essential oxygen or nutrients to the cells and they couldn’t take away waste. The serum slowed and attacked the poison but usually not enough to save the soldier.
The wounds were painful too; they burned, caused hallucinations, vomiting, dehydration, cramps, and seizures.
“That’s a diluted form!” James gasped; he didn’t want to know what the full force of that venom could do to someone. Matt nodded, “When you think about it,” he said after a moment, “it makes sense.” He held up a hand before anyone could sputter an objection and continued, “The Koyra are from a cold planet, frigid by our standards, game must be scarce and even finding it would take large amounts of energy. Now once you find something lets say you only wound it, how much more energy will it take to chase it down and finally kill it? If you only have to break the skin with a venomous bite or a poisoned weapon you save yourself a lot of energy expenditure. It would only take a moment for the creature to die.”
“Yes a moment of absolute torture.” James snarled, “Have you never seen a soldier suffering from a poisoning? Most of them give into death to escape the pain.”
“That’s because it’s been diluted.” The Koyra finally spoke, he looked directly at James, “Yes the bite does burn like fire, but it’s meant to induce cardiac arrest almost immediately. If the venom wasn’t diluted you would have a near one hundred percent mortality rate.”
“So what, you think they’re being nice by diluting the venom? Giving us a fighting chance, that’s awfully generous of them.” Brian said sarcastically. The Koyra only shrugged, “I don’t know what their reasoning is.” He said simply.
“But there’s a chance we can survive it in its pure form? You said near one hundred percent fatality.” Johnny whispered. James wrapped an arm around his waist and held him close. The Koyra nodded slowly and looked away, “Not on your own you can’t.” he said slowly, “But with an injection of Koyra blood you can.”
Again they were quiet until James spoke, “How did you figure that out?” he murmured.
“Lucky guess.” Matt said quietly.
“That thing bit you and you’re still working with him?” Brian exclaimed. Matt shook his head, “Zack didn’t bite me,” he put a slight emphasis on the Koyra’s name that didn’t slip past James and he knew it didn’t get past Brian either, “another one did.”
“It was a year or two after we started working together, we were with a small platoon that was pretty much on a suicide mission, they were forward guard sent out to scare the Koyra out of hiding or at least provoke them to attack so command would know their hiding places.”
“Apparently the Koyra thought we were holding Zack hostage. They launched a small rescue party and tried to drag Zack out of camp. I woke up and got a lucky shot off and killed one and when I reached out to grab Zack another one bit my arm.” He shuddered, “Worst feeling in the world, it burned worse than the poisoning I got and then I went numb; I couldn’t move, I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t blink. I was totally paralyzed, I could feel my body shutting down though. My heart skipped a couple beats and the paralysis spread to my lungs and I started to suffocate. That only took a moment; I would’ve been dead in a Loka.”
“Zack fought off the other two then gave me a serum injection and when that didn’t do anything he gave me a shot of his blood. After a Loka I could move a little, I could blink at least, and by morning I was pretty much alright. I was sore for a couple days and the bite fractured my arm but I lived through it.”
James stared at him in amazement, not only had he lived through a poisoning he had lived through that severe of a bite, “Good Gods.” he whispered, “Maybe they are doing us a favor.”
“If they thought you were being held hostage why hasn’t command sent you in undercover?” Johnny asked, “We could learn where the home planet is, weapon caches, and all kinds of stuff.”
“I was blacklisted by morning.” The Koyra said, “Once I attacked the other two and saved Matt I became a primary target.” He smiled wryly, “So now everyone wants me dead.”
Matt wrapped an arm around him and held him close and James had a feeling there had been many discussions over that particular sentiment. Brian was oddly quiet and James watched him, waiting for one of his sarcastic comments, perhaps an agreement with the Koyra but he stayed silent.
After a moment of silence Matt shook himself and released the Koyra and looked around at the dark trees. James looked around too and was surprised to see how dark it was, it had been close to twilight when they were collecting firewood now it was fully night.
“Get some sleep. I have a feeling tomorrow will be a long day.” Matt said quietly.
