First Week of Classes
He was feeling nervous again. His first class had only about eighteen other students in it and it seemed like all of them were taking turns staring at him. He checked to make sure he had pants on. The classroom wasn’t really big; it was a definite rectangular shape with only a few scattered chairs and a table in the center of the room. The walls were lined with computers which is where everyone sat. The teacher’s desk was at the opposite end of the room from the door. The walls and tiled floor were both a cream white but the dull glow of the overhead fluorescents kept the room from looking completely sterile.
English class at eight o’ clock in the morning was not what he had dreamed of college being. Matt didn’t have his first class until nine and he was probably still sleeping. Zack scowled at the computer screen in front of him; he hated being up so early in the morning.
A tall, brunette walked in with a loud rustle of papers and a flurry of movement, “Sorry, I had a staff meeting that ran over.” She apologized. Zack looked at the clock; she was only five minutes late. He shrugged and watched her unpack her gear; he had been expecting some old crone to be teaching English not a fresh faced twenty something.
“My name is Jessica by the way, Jessica Moore. You can call me Jessica, or Miss Moore, doesn’t matter which.” She pulled out the book for the class and then set her bags on the floor. “Okay,” she said with a smile, she picked up a stack of papers and handed them to the student closest to her, “This is the class syllabus and schedule for this semester. None of the dates on there are set in stone so if we need to push a due date back or move it forward we can.” She booted up her own computer and pulled the screen down and once everyone had their copy of the syllabus she began going over it.
He had four classes on Mondays and they were all in the morning and afternoon. At eleven he had math and then at noon he had history and finally at one he had chemistry. When he had first seen the schedule he had wanted to shoot himself but now he thought he was going to like it. He was done at two while everyone else didn’t get done until three or four.
Tuesdays he managed to have only one class: Chemistry lab. He was happily done at noon; while again, everyone else didn’t finish until one or two. Wednesdays and Fridays were the same schedule as Monday and Thursday he had absolutely free while everyone else had two or three classes.
After the first day he was feeling pretty confident, he was enrolled in all 100 or 101 classes, beginner stuff, easy stuff. He was a little wary of chemistry though, he would probably have to ask Johnny for help when they began doing chemical reactions. Still he was happy with his easy schedule.
He unlocked the door to their room and stepped in; Matt was still gone so he had the tiny room to himself. He tossed his stuff on to his bed and toed his shoes off and went over and lay down on Matt’s bed. His scent on the pillow was still heavy and fresh and he buried his nose into the fabric sighing contently. He had missed waking up that morning without his mate’s scent around him.
He didn’t know he had fallen asleep until he felt a familiar weight settling beside him. His eyes fluttered open and he pushed himself up and looked around. Matt was lying next to him already looking like he was half asleep. Zack pulled his phone out of his pocket and looked at the time, “Damn.” He muttered. Matt chuckled and pulled him close and buried his nose in the nape of his neck, “My turn to nap.” He mumbled. Zack relaxed and snuggled closer to him, “Have fun?” he murmured, starting to fall asleep again. Matt’s lips pressed against his skin, “I’m going to be bored out of my mind in my history class.” He answered. Zack snickered, “If weren’t so damn old you wouldn’t have that problem.”
Matt kissed his neck and pulled him closer, “How was your day?” he whispered. Zack turned in his arms and pressed his nose against his neck breathing deeply, “I missed your smell.” He mumbled, he wrinkled his nose and pulled back, “And I still do, what is that?” he rubbed his cheek against his mate’s shoulder trying to get rid of the flowery scent. Matt’s laugh rumbled through his chest, “I have a large fan base in Latin.”
Zack huffed and ran his nose across his shoulder and neck one more time making certain the offensive smell was gone. Zack cuddled close to him again and sighed contently. Matt’s gentle fingers combed through his soft hair soothingly and his steady heartbeat soon lulled Zack back into sleep.
He woke up again when Matt gently untangled their limbs and sat up. He whined quietly and sat up also, “What?” he murmured sleepily, then he heard another knock on the door. The pair looked at each other and then Matt sighed, “I was hoping it would take them a little longer to figure out where we are.”
Zack snickered, “Our fans always know where we are, hell half of them knew we were the surprise band on Warped before we even announced it.” He rolled off the bed and went to answer the door.
The first thing he noticed, like he always did, was the scent. It was heavy, almost choking; sickly sweet honey suckle and pungent lilac with the faintest undertone of rot. He wrinkled his nose and sneezed to clear his sinuses. Matt came up behind him, his body was tense, Zack kept one eye on him as he opened the door.
There in the hallway stood a woman. Her long golden hair was pulled back into a French braid revealing her coffee brown eyes and sharp angular face. She seemed caught off guard when she saw Zack standing there but her eyes quickly found Matt and a coy smile graced her thin lips. Zack bristled immediately, the wolf in him wanted to tackle the bitch and put her in her place. Matt was his mate and he would not tolerate any competition from her.
“Hi,” she purred completely ignoring Zack, her voice was light and a little nasally, “I was hoping you were done with classes.”
Zack didn’t stop the low rumbling growl that bubbled up from his chest; the she-wolf lifted her own lips in a snarl. The wolf lost its mind, this gaunt little wisp of girl would not survive the next five minutes if he had his way. Matt’s arm wrapped around his waist and pulled him close to his warm body, warm lips pressed against his neck and a reassuring nuzzle calmed him down enough to think a little. He relaxed, a little, but Matt held him firmly against his body while he spoke to the intrusive wolf.
“What do you want?” he growled. The she-wolf brushed off his tone, “Would you like to get a cup of coffee and talk?” she suggested with a coy lift of her eyebrow on the last word. Zack was rigid against Matt glaring imminent death at the skinny wolf, he bared his teeth and a loud snarl ripped from his throat. The other wolf backed up a step startled and then regained her composure. A growl rumbled in Matt’s chest, “Leave me alone.” He pulled Zack back a few steps and then smoothly closed the door on her.
He let Zack go once the door was closed and leaned against it so he couldn’t run out and chase the bitch down. Zack glared at the wood behind his mate, “Who the fuck was that?” he demanded. Matt rubbed his forehead, “She was in my Welcome Week group.” He explained. Zack’s anger didn’t cool, the wolf in him wanted to find her and smear her into the pavement.
“Zachary,” Matt whispered softly, he caught his pacing mate’s arm and pulled him close again, “leave it angel.” He murmured. He lightly pressed his lips against Zack’s and then moved to his jaw line and down his neck. Zack relaxed more every time his lips pressed against his skin until even the angry wolf inside him was soothed.
“I’m yours forever, love.” Matt whispered against his skin. The rest of the anger left him and he let out a long breath. He pulled Matt’s head up and kissed him, savoring his petal soft lips and warm tongue.
Someone knocked softly on the door and then it opened. Zack’s anger flared momentarily until he saw Johnny peaking in. He pulled away from Matt and pounced on the puppy playfully. The two growled and lightly nipped at each other in their usual greeting while Jimmy and Brian came in. Brian rolled his eyes but pulled Zack away from Johnny long enough to press a light kiss to his neck. Zack brushed his cheek against his and went back to wrestling with Johnny.
“What’s up?” Matt asked shaking his head the two puppies. Jimmy leaned against the large dresser on the north wall, “Nothin’ much, you guys wanna grab dinner?” he shrugged. Brian put an arm on Matt’s shoulder and leaned against him, “Any reason the hallway smells like a bitch in heat?” he asked casually. Zack broke away from Johnny and growled low in his throat. Johnny darted over to Jimmy’s side and peaked at him timidly.
Matt laughed without humor, “A flea that won’t stop biting.” He walked over and wrapped an arm around Zack again and pulled him close again. Zack butted his chest but surrendered to the confinement of his arms. Jimmy raised an eyebrow in question; Brian was less subtle, “Spill.” He said. Zack pressed closer to Matt and growled again. Matt gave an annoyed sigh, “The she-wolf, the one I think the Hunters are here for, has taken a liking to me.” His lips twitched into a smile, “We need to keep Zack away from her.”
Brian laughed, “You have the worst jealousy complex.” He poked at Zack’s exposed side. Zack squeaked and giggled with the light tickle. Johnny relaxed and edged out from behind Jimmy. Matt ran his fingers up and down his sides making him squirm and giggle until his bad mood was forgotten.
“Are you two ready to eat?” Brian asked. Zack wiggled out of Matt’s grip and grabbed Johnny’s arm and darted out the door.
After they ate they walked back to Matt and Zack’s room, the night air was heavy with dew and the smells of the campus. They made it back to the room without incident and Zack and Johnny proceeded to growl and wrestle with each other.
“You two.” Brian said shaking his head. Zack rolled Johnny onto his back and the little wolf lightly batted him away and rolled over and pounced. Matt watched them with an amused smile. Jimmy reached over and easily pushed Johnny over, “I think these two need a run.”
“I think you’re right, c’mon you two.” Matt said. Zack and Johnny were already halfway out the door.
The sole reason Zack had picked Gable Woods was for its expansive green area. They didn’t have to go far to reach a secluded spot where they could stash their clothes and change. Zack and Johnny took off through the sparse bushes and trees yipping happily. Matt shouldered Brian to the ground and nipped at his flank and ruff; the black wolf growled and took off after him. Jimmy’s long legs made it easy for him to catch up to the hyper puppies.
Zack and Johnny pranced around him trying to trip him up and chasing his bushy tail. Jimmy snorted and jumped away from them and began a light trot away from the main campus. Zack and Johnny happily chased after him barking and harassing each other along the way.
They hadn’t been running long, Zack’s cramped muscles had only started to limber up, when he came to a sliding halt and went rigid. Johnny shot past him and then scrambled back to his side with a confused whine. Zack ignored him for the moment and sniffed heavily, the scent was a touch faint, carried by the light breeze and not from the wolf directly, but it was unmistakably the she-wolf’s. He growled and began following the scent.
He followed it until the faint trail became the true trail of the wolf and then he moved faster. He forgot all about Johnny and Jimmy following him and focused only on finding the wolf that wanted to steal his mate. He tracked the she-wolf’s scent until it crossed with Matt’s. He growled again and then raised his head and howled for his mate. The howl hadn’t even faded from the air before Matt and Brian’s answering howls called for him. The other three members of the pack sprinted toward their other Alpha and their cranky Beta.
Matt and Brian were standing rigidly in an area with only a few saplings and sparse bushes. From the cover of the greenery a set of reflective light brown eyes stared at him angrily. His hackles rose, from the base of his skull straight down to his tail. He curled his lips back and snarled with all the ferocity his little body could hold. Matt shifted and laid a hand on his head; Zack didn’t relax but he stopped snarling and then he changed as well. The she-wolf walked stiff-legged out of the bushes and shifted.
The silver light that softened the hard edges of Matt’s body and made Zack almost seem to glow was not so kind the she wolf. The harsh light made her face more angular and her thin body looked almost emaciated. Still she looked at Zack with contempt and then turned her attention to Matt, “I knew I’d see you again, have you changed your mind about our coffee date?” she asked sweetly. The wolf in Zack demanded he run over and tear the bitch apart, but Matt’s warm body beside him and Jimmy’s reassuring presence behind him helped keep him sane.
“Never.” Matt said with a rather bored tone. The female bristled, “I fail to see what you find endearing in that puppy.” She spat glaring at Zack. Zack’s lips lifted and he snarled at her. Matt’s arm slipped around his waist and held him close, “He’s older than you, I’m guessing by a century.”
The she-wolf pulled herself up tall and straight, “I was changed in the year 1492.” She said haughtily. Zack snorted and some of his anger faded, but not enough for his muscles to relax.
“You’re losing your touch.” Brian said casually. Matt shrugged, “I was only off by four years.”
“You used to be able to guess the month.” Brian countered. Matt chuckled, “No, I knew the wolf that changed him.” He laughed again when Brian looked at him with surprise. Zack snickered and nuzzled Matt’s shoulder.
“You bastard, you lied to me.” Brian said smacking him on the back.
“Not my fault you fell for it.” Matt countered. Brian huffed, “I was barely two decades old.” He crossed his arms over his chest and glared at him. Matt was still laughing. The she-wolf glared at them angrily for ignoring her. Zack didn’t hide the smug smile that turned his lips up and the she-wolf bared her teeth and snarled.
From the bushes came two answering growls, Matt stiffened and Zack zeroed in on the sound and saw two more lean wolves slinking from the bushes. Now the she-wolf had the smug smile but Zack wasn’t worried about the two new wolves. They were as skinny as the she-wolf, no threat to their strong pack.
The larger of the new wolves was an odd gold color with deep blue eyes, with a longer coat he could’ve passed as a golden retriever. The other was grey and white. Both watched them warily. He was a little concerned that he hadn’t been able to smell them when he followed the she-wolf’s trail, Unless they just got here. His mind offered as a small condolence. He accepted the theory and watched the two new wolves ripple to their thin human forms.
The golden wolf had skin blacker than ebony and short dreads that reached just below his ears, out of the three he looked the heaviest. He had lean, stringy muscles that rippled beneath his skin as he fidgeted nervously.
The other male was the smallest and the thinnest. If the female looked gaunt he looked like a victim in the midst of a ten year famine. Thin as he was though, he carried the same aloof attitude of the female. The bigger wolf seemed to be the only one to realize how quickly Johnny alone could overwhelm them.
Zack snorted with disdain, they were all younger than him, the female looked to be the oldest.
“Three puppies, judging by your emaciated appearance your elders have either abandoned you or they’ve been killed.” Jimmy said looking them over.
“I’d bet the former.” Brian muttered just loud enough for the other three to hear. Matt swatted him lightly, but Zack saw his lips twitch in humor. He bit back his own smile and looked the wolves over critically.
“Our elders would never abandon us. They gave their lives to protect us.” The she-wolf said proudly. Brian whispered quietly, “Not the choice I would’ve made.” Into Matt’s ear. The Alpha bit back a laugh and Jimmy snorted. The wolves glared at them angrily, “Their sacrifice is nothing to laugh at!” The little grey and white wolf snarled.
“Their teaching technique is.” Brian said tauntingly, “You’re over five hundred years old and you can’t keep yourselves properly fed. Surely your wolf self knows how to catch a squirrel.”
Zack was quickly becoming bored with the three skinny dogs. Without warning he shifted to his wolf form and trotted off to find a rodent to chase. There was a loud ‘yip’ behind him and then Johnny shot past him barking playfully. Zack grinned and gladly chased the little wolf. Matt’s low howl echoed through the trees as the other three joined in the game.
A/N: Sorry for the time between updates, my school schedule and classes are making it hard to find time to write. I also volunteered to write a Jared Leto/Hayden Pantierre fic. Don’t know what I was thinking there…
Anyway, thank you for your patience and your reviews ^_^ I’m starting the next chapter this weekend :)
