Intriguing is good, hopefully this chapter will continue. The date clears a few things up, but it's still interesting at the end. :) Thanks for the feedback guys.
Ch 6
Carrie apprehensively checked her phone again to make sure that it hadn’t rang as she turned to watch the cars drive by the street in front the restaurant. She had talked to Kelly the day before to make sure that they were still on for dinner, but at the time, she had forgotten to mention that the restaurant was tricky to see if one didn’t know where to look since they had become caught up in a conversation about music. So, Carrie was waiting outside in case Kelly called for better directions. She was slightly uneasy, but she also felt a sense of calm because she wouldn’t have to lie much longer.
She walked towards the doors of the restaurant and lifted her coat sleeve to look at the time on her watch. The darker it became outside, the temperature steadily dropped and made Carrie glad that she had decided to bring the coat along. She had on one of her favorite shirts that was designed to look like a vest, but she would have frozen in no time. Carrie snickered as she thought about how Matt had tried to get her to wear one of the new outfits that they had bought the day before. She had only gone shopping because Matt had teased her that she needed a new outfit for the date with Kelly. He hadn’t been pleased when she had made him follow through.
“I’m a few minutes late, and you’re already trying to get a ride home?”
Carrie turned around at the familiar voice and smiled when she saw Kelly. “You’re not late. I just thought you might need some help with the directions. It’s kinda hard to find.”
Kelly shrugged her shoulders as she stopped beside Carrie. She hadn’t had much trouble finding the restaurant, but she liked that Carrie had been concerned. “Nope. Put the address in the GPS, and here I am. I think maybe you’re the one who has problems with directions.”
Carrie blushed at the comment, though she didn’t make a joke of her own when she realized that Kelly looked chilly. The girl was in a dress, and it had to be sixty degrees, with no coat. “You look great, but let’s go inside. I bet you’re freezing.”
Kelly walked with Carrie into the restaurant since she was cold, but it wasn’t too bad. “I’m fine, it was what? Thirty seconds to get from the car to here?” She rubbed her hands on her arms once they were inside. “Thanks for waiting outside; it was sweet of you.”
Carrie didn’t say anything because she would have done the same thing for any of her friends. She took off her coat as they waited to be seated, and then she held it in her arms as she looked around to see that the restaurant was as busy as she thought it would be at night. “I called last night to make sure they’d have a place for us.” Carrie smiled at Kelly. She had figured that Kelly thought the place wouldn’t be booked because there couldn’t be too many vegetarians in Nashville. The shorter girl had said as much on the phone.
Kelly tried not to let her surprise show, although she was pleasantly surprised that Carrie had called ahead for them. “Smart girl, ‘cuz I’m hungry.” She laughed along with Carrie at the joke, but they quieted down when the maître d' cleared his throat to get their attention. She let Carrie do the talking since the blonde had called ahead. As they followed their waiter to their table, Kelly took a moment to check out Carrie. The other girl looked good in a pair of close-fitting, black dress slacks, and Kelly had to admit that even the overdone vest-shirt combination was cute on Carrie. Once they had been told the specials and gave the waiter their drink order, Kelly smiled at Carrie. “You look pretty amazing. You make that strange shirt and vest combo work.”
Carrie had to laugh at Kelly’s terminology for her clothes; the other girl was clearly not a person who spent a lot of time learning about fashion. “Thanks. Like I said before, you look great. Though I didn’t think you were the type of girl who likes to wear dresses often. Like obviously for award shows, but, yeah.” Carrie gave up trying to explain her remarks before she managed to insult Kelly. She had complimented Kelly’s appearance other times, but Kelly hadn’t ever smiled brightly at the compliments like the brunette was now. Carrie looked down at her menu and pretended to look it over to hide her uneasiness at their topic.
Kelly opened her menu so that Carrie didn’t feel weird about the abrupt end of their conversation. She looked at the menu since she was hungry, but she also considered topics that would keep Carrie from becoming even more nervous. She understood that the blonde was nervous since it was Carrie’s first date with another girl. “What would you recommend?” Kelly thought it was the best track to start on because this was one of Carrie’s favorite restaurants. She set her menu aside and looked around the place. The restaurant was nice, kind of casual; Kelly liked the atmosphere.
Carrie glanced up from her menu to see that Kelly was looking around at the restaurant and the other patrons. She held onto her menu and looked at Kelly. “It depends on what you like to eat. There’s a few things I would stay away from if you don’t like spices. But if you do, then the specials that the waiter recommended are good.” Carrie already knew what she wanted to order, although she smiled and went back to her menu when Kelly looked at her.
“Cool.” Kelly decided to go with one of the specials that had a few different dishes because she wasn’t really sure what she wanted to try. “This is a nice place. Not what I expected, though I guess I shouldn’t talk since there isn’t much better back in Texas.”
Carrie chuckled at the joke and put her menu near the edge of the table. “I’m sure they have more places than there is back in Checotah.” She smiled when Kelly just looked at her curiously. “I forgot that you don’t know about my hometown. It’s pretty small.”
Kelly had been thrown by the name, though she had known that Carrie had come from a small town. “I bet going home and getting some food is a trip.” She couldn’t have been happier when Carrie agreed and started to talk more about Checotah.
"I usually stay close to my parents’ house anyway, but yeah, if we go out it’s salads and fruits for the most part.” Carrie knew that Kelly understood how hard it could be to get something different to eat at the typical restaurant, so she decided to talk about the subject more than she usually would with other people. “When I visit my folks, my mom stocks up on the food that I like so I won’t have to drive an hour to get something to eat.”
Kelly laughed at the story because it was cute. “Jason tries to do the same, but the poor guy can never remember what it is that I like, so I end up with all these health bars,” Kelly had to smile when Carrie groaned at the mention of the bars. “I know, right? Like, dude, just go out and get me some cheesy noodles and it’s good, don’t try to get me fake candy-like tasteless bars. I like dessert too much, so it just makes me wish he had picked up something sweet.”
"It’s funny, like people suddenly think you can’t have anything when you tell them you’re a vegetarian.” Carrie would have laughed when Kelly held up the menu and made a joke about how astounded Jason would be at all the different dishes on it, but the sight of the menu made her think of something. “Hey? Do you like almonds or honey?” Carrie grabbed her menu and flipped to the desserts that the restaurant made. “They make these really great desserts with like honey and butter. One has almonds, and I love it.”
Kelly leaned over when Carrie tilted the menu in her direction and pointed at a certain part of the menu. “Those sound really good.” She smiled and looked on her own menu to read the different desserts carefully because there were a couple of names that she hadn’t recognized. “I’m not big on almonds, but I’m so getting dessert now. You shouldn’t have told me about it, because if it’s good, Jason’s not going to want to come here with me to eat.”
Carrie shook her head at the statement. “You don’t have to make Jason or Ashley come with you if you bring them home dessert. Trust me, once they try the food they’ll come with you whenever you want.” She set her menu at the edge of the table again, though she picked it back up when she saw their waiter approach the table with their drinks. “Here comes our waiter, I can tell him that we’ll need two desserts to go if you want? They have to blend the honey and the butter obviously, so he’ll have to put it in after we’re finished.”
Kelly told Carrie which desserts she thought that Jason and Ashley would like, because she would forget to tell the waiter at the end of their date. She quietly watched Carrie order, and she only spoke up when the blonde looked at her when it was her turn to order. Kelly blushed as she tried to remember the name of the special she had wanted, but thankfully Carrie intervened as she tried to explain to the waiter what she thought had been in the special. “Not remembering the name of the dish pretty much lost me any coolness I had built up, didn’t it?
Carrie wanted to laugh at Kelly’s self-depreciating humor, so she just sipped her drink and smiled. “You heard the name like once, it’s not a big deal, Kel.” She cleared her throat and took another sip of her drink when Kelly’s cheeks reddened. “I can, so, mispronounce something when he comes back if it’ll make you feel better?” Carrie sat back and listened as Kelly laughed for a few seconds before the other girl launched into a story about a time in the studio and mixed up lyrics.

Kelly smiled at their waiter as her placed her dessert in front of her. She eyed the bowl of heated and mashed ingredients and wondered how it would taste as the waiter gave Carrie some kind of flavored coffee. The dessert smelled wonderful, so Kelly grabbed her spoon and gathered a small mouthful; it tasted great. Kelly grinned happily as Carrie reminded the waiter about their to go order of desserts. “You were right. It’s all kinds of awesome.”
Carrie sipped her coffee as Kelly ate another bite of the dessert. “I told you it was great.” She stared into her cup as she tried to forget Kelly’s happy expression. Carrie had tried to tell the other girl that she wasn’t gay; but they had started to talk, and then their meals had arrived before she had realized how much time had passed. They had spoken while they ate, and Carrie had thought about telling Kelly the truth then, but once again, their conversation had made her want to delay hurting Kelly’s feelings for a little longer.
Kelly wasn’t sure why Carrie had suddenly become so quiet. They had talked through the entire meal practically, and she could tell that Carrie’d had a good time also. It suddenly occurred to Kelly that Carrie might be nervous again because their date was almost over. She was a little tense because she wasn’t sure how she should say good night to Carrie. Did she walk Carrie back to the blonde’s car? Did they part outside the restaurant? Kelly wasn’t sure how much affection was too much for Carrie. “If you think the dessert is so great, why didn’t you get one?”
Carrie set her cup of coffee down and pretended to peer closely at Kelly’s choice. “You saw what I ate, I’m gonna be full for like three days.” She grinned and picked her coffee up to take another sip, though she stopped herself and put it back on the table. Caffeine might not be the best choice for the conversation she was about to have with Kelly. Carrie did not want to speak so fast that Kelly thought that she really didn’t care about how the misunderstanding ended.
Kelly snickered at the smartass comment and ate some more of her dessert. “This is better than the almond one I bet.” She took a quick bite, and then pushed the bowl towards Carrie. Kelly put down her spoon and reached across the table to hold Carrie’s hand. “Try it.”
Carrie stared stupidly at the bowl Kelly had pushed towards her for a moment because she had not expected that Kelly would try to hold her hand. She pulled her hand back immediately. Friends didn’t hold hands and offer to share dessert. Carrie might not want to hurt Kelly’s feelings, but she wasn’t about to lead Kelly on and hold the girl’s hand. She grabbed her coffee and stared at it so she didn’t have to look at Kelly. “I’m sorry.”
Kelly slowly drew her hand back towards her end of the table and grabbed the spoon she had abandoned; she didn’t really have a reason behind her actions, she just did it because she was surprised at Carrie’s reaction. “No… it’s cool.” Kelly worriedly tapped on the spoon as she tried to figure out how badly she had messed up their night. “I’m sorry. I know this is new for you, and I go and grab your hand in public. I’m sorry.”
Carrie didn’t think she had ever felt like such an asshole as she did right now. Kelly was so sweet. She was sure that her stupid reaction had hurt Kelly’s feelings, but the brunette was trying to make her feel better. “You don’t,” Carrie sighed and looked into Kelly’s eyes, though the look in Kelly’s eyes made it harder for her to speak. How many times had she seen the same anxiously hopeful look in a guy’s eyes? “I’m not a lesbian.” Carrie wanted to hit her head on the table for her lack of subtlety.
Kelly had to laugh at the way Carrie had just blurted out the sentence; it was too funny and a little cute. “Okay, I kinda thought you were bi. It’s not a problem. I’m not like some girls who only date girls who are lesbians.” Kelly’s laughter ended completely when Carrie shook her head. “What?” She stared at the blonde in shock when Carrie apologized again and grabbed her hand. Kelly didn’t know what the hell was going on, but she was too stunned to get a word out of her mouth.
Carrie didn’t know how to comfort Kelly, and it really didn’t help that she was bad at being the one to give comfort in general, so she lightly held onto Kelly’s hand when the shorter girl backed away. “I am so sorry. I know that none of this makes sense, and I should have said something sooner, but I didn’t know how to tell you. I didn’t realize that the party was a gay party, and then I didn’t get it at first when you asked me out. I am so, so sorry that I misunderstood.”
Kelly didn’t speak, she just concentrated on keeping her face blank. To say her mind was blown was an understatement. Kelly felt so many things that she just wanted to have Carrie be quiet so that she could process what had just happened. “Why?” She shook her head as she tried to think of a reason that Carrie would go out on a date with her if the girl wasn’t attracted to her. “Why didn’t you just tell me? Why come to dinner with me?”
Carrie was grateful that Kelly hadn’t immediately assumed the worst, but she was distressed to see the pained look in Kelly’s eyes. “I can explain. I would understand if you wanted to leave though, I mean I kind of lied to you, but it was only because I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.” Carrie let go of Kelly’s hand and started to explain herself faster when she saw Kelly look even more confused. “When I realized that you had invited me to a gay party, I figured out that you must have thought I was too because of my apology at the awards after party. And we had just made up from that, I didn’t want you to think that I had only said I would go out with you because of the fight, I really do want to be your friend. I have a great time with you, and that’s why I couldn’t make myself tell you that I wasn’t a lesbian. I want us to be friends, and I don’t- I just, I thought it would be better to tell you in person, but then we started to talk,” Carrie looked down at the table as she caught her breath. “I’m sorry. I would completely get it if you never wanted to talk to me again. I can’t tell you how sorry I am.”
Kelly sat quietly as she absorbed all the details of Carrie’s long explanation. “Wow.” Kelly stared at Carrie’s down turned head as she thought about the blonde’s reasoning. “If anyone should apologize, it should be me.” Kelly held up her hand when Carried looked at her, but when the other girl didn’t speak, she put her hand down. “Yeah, you made some bad choices, but I just assumed you were gay. I’m sorry, Carrie.” Kelly couldn’t believe the amount of thought that Carrie had put into a situation that never should have happened. “I’m sorry.” Kelly didn’t even want to think about how Ashley and Jason would react if she told them.
Carrie wanted to apologize again, though she remained silent since Kelly hadn’t left. She had thought that she felt like the biggest asshole before, but she had been wrong; Kelly’s apology had made her feel even worse. Carrie didn’t know what to do, and after a longer silence than she would have liked, she picked up her spoon and scooped out some of Kelly’s dessert. She ate the spoonful of dessert and waited for some kind of reaction as she got another bite. Carrie knew she deserved whatever kind of reaction Kelly ultimately decided on, but she hoped that the other girl would take her actions as a sign of friendship.
Kelly weakly chuckled when she noticed what Carrie was doing. She smiled at the girl when Carrie looked at her because of her soft laughter. “I thought you didn’t want to try that?” Kelly picked up her own spoon when Carrie shrugged and ate another bite. She silently ate the dessert until they had finished it, and then she looked at Carrie and studied the girl for a few seconds. “Do you still want to be friends with me?”
Carrie shyly smiled because she hadn’t thought that Kelly would actually choose to be friends with her. “Yes. I meant it when I said that I have a good time with you.” She let out a tiny relieved sigh when Kelly smiled again. Tommy and Matt were never going to believe her when she told them that the night had ended so well.
****
Kelly shut the door as gently as she could, and then she hastily locked it with as little noise as possible. She knew Jason was probably playing a videogame, though he sometimes wandered to the kitchen for a drink or a snack, so she tried to walk soundlessly to the kitchen and left the desserts there. Kelly would have been fine if it were hours later than the actual time, her brother and Ashley would have been asleep, but it was ten at night.
She quickly made her way to the staircase and climbed the stairs. Kelly just wanted to lie down and try to sleep. She crept down the hallway past Ashley’s room; and then she speedily opened her door and slipped into her room before Ashley decided to check on any noise she might have made. Kelly listened at the door for a moment and then she turned around and screamed when she saw her best friend on her bed. “I know you help with my parties and all, but it’s freaky that you’re in my room.” Kelly tossed her purse on her bed and walked towards her closet.
“Come on, Kel. You would have said you didn’t want to tell me about your date before you left if you meant that.” Ashley moved to the edge of the bed that was closest to the side of the room where Kelly was, and then she frowned when she noticed her friend was wearing a coat. “Tell me about your date.” She had no idea how the date had gone. A week ago, she would have said it was a set up of some kind; two nights ago, she was willing to admit that it seemed like Carrie was into the date. Ashley honestly hoped that it had gone well. “I thought you said you weren’t going to wear a coat?”
Kelly was not about to tell Ashley what had happened on the date. She didn’t need to hear Ashley go off about Carrie, and she really didn’t want to address the coat issue. “It was fine.” She turned around and looked at her friend expectantly, although Ashley just stayed on her bed. “What do you want to hear, Ash? She wasn’t a diva, she wasn’t mean. It was just a date.”
Ashley stood up when Kelly did the crossed arms thing and wouldn’t look at her. “If it was so fine, then why don’t you want to talk about it?” Ashley walked over to Kelly because it was clear to her that the date had not ended well. “Kelly, come on, we tell each other about our dates; it couldn’t have been that bad.”
Kelly rolled her eyes at Ashley’s questions because she knew that somehow her friend would make the situation out to be Carrie’s fault. “I never asked you to tell me about the things you do with- ow!” Kelly rubbed her arm where Ashley had knocked her. “That’s not going to make me tell you. Just go to bed.”
Ashley didn’t fall for Kelly’s hard front, she could tell that something had upset her best friend. “What did she do?” When Kelly didn’t reply, Ashley angrily walked away. “I knew she was a stuck up bitch. Don’t stress about her, Kelly. She wasn’t worth it. You didn’t need to-"
"Shut up, Ash!” Kelly took a deep breath as Ashley stared at her for yelling. “She’s not stuck up, or a bitch. In fact she’s pretty much the nicest girl I’ve went on a date with.” Kelly almost laughed at her use of the word date, but she held it in and walked over to Ashley so that the other girl could see that she was serious. “I don’t want you to talk about her that way.”
"Kelly, she yelled at you when you asked her to come to-"
"I said, no.” Kelly walked over to her door and opened it up so that Ashley would get her point and leave. “She’s not what you think. She’s not even gay, but she went on our date because she didn’t want to hurt my feelings. What a cruel, bitch, right?”
Ashley opened and closed her mouth a few times as she tried to decide how to act. She wanted to curse out the country singer for leading Kelly on, but she also wanted to hug her best friend. Ashley chose the second option, the most important one in her mind, and walked over to Kelly and hugged her friend.
Kelly remained quiet, she just waited for Ashley to let go of her. She didn’t want to talk about what had happened on her date with Carrie. She didn’t want Ashley to know how stupid she had been. Kelly didn’t think she could even tell Ashley about how well the date had gone only to have to say that it had all been a lie. She bit her trembling bottom lip in an effort to hold back her tears as she thought about the end of the date again. Kelly didn’t want to think about how Carrie had given her the coat because the temperature had gotten so cold while they had had been on their ‘date’. She agreed one hundred percent with Carrie that they would be good friends. She was just really disappointed because she thought they would be good together also. Kelly maneuvered herself out of Ashley’s embrace and kept her back to her friend. “I don’t know why you’re hugging me. It was just a first date.”
Ashley didn’t fail to notice Kelly bring an arm up, even though she couldn’t see what Kelly was doing, she knew Kelly was trying to wipe away tears. “Kelly… is there something I can do?” She watched her friend closely for any indications that Kelly was pretending to want to be alone. Ashley didn’t like it when Kelly kept stuff in, but that was just how her friend worked most of the time. When she didn’t get a reply, she walked to the doorway, though she turned back. “I’ll keep Jason downstairs playing games for as long as I can.”
Kelly swallowed to clear her throat, however, by the time she felt she could speak without giving away how upset she was, Ashley had already shut the door. She went back over to her closet and pulled out some comfortable clothes. She changed out of her dress and put on the simple sweats and t-shirt, though Kelly stopped when she saw the coat on the floor. She stared at the coat for a moment before she kicked it to her laundry hamper. She didn’t want to see the coat, or think about Carrie, until she had dealt with her feelings. Kelly finished changing and then left her room and headed to her other room so she could write.
