Everlasting Love(Pt6)
My Dearest Son,
I sit here thinking as I write this letter to you; of the little bundle of joy I first held in my arms many, many years ago. The restless nights we sat up because you couldn’t sleep. Watching you belly flop across the floor after your favorite toy as you learned how to crawl, your first steps into my arms. Running around the house calling da…da…da…
The joy and happiness you brought to us as a small boy. Peddling and wobbling down the sidewalk, the first time you rode your bicycle without the training wheels. How you wouldn’t go into your kindergarten class the first day of school without your dad holding your hand tight or the smile on your face when you graduated from high school.
Then as an adult, embarking in a whole new world. Through the years of collage, your first job, moving away from home. The wonderful woman you made your wife, a daughter-in-law that I love dearly. Lastly, the two grandchildren I was able to spoil. I cherish every moment I had with you, as did your mother.
You’re asking yourself why I brought all of these memoirs up in the opening of this letter?
This letter is not a letter of forgiveness, but a letter of understanding, why we kept this secret from you. Your mother and I promised each other that we would carry this to our grave. Your mother did, but I on the other hand cannot. You have a right to know about it. Now that I no longer walk on this earth, I have to tell you the truth and of my guilt of never telling you. Please remember as you read the rest of this, that I love you with all my heart, as a father should.
Your mother was already pregnant with you when I met her in late1992. We fell in love and married within 3 months. She told me everything about how you were conceived, the three nights that she spent with your father. She never imagined that she would get pregnant from that one chance encounter; but never regretted it either. He was never contacted and had no knowledge that you were ever born; your mother wanted it that way.
I know what your thinking right now. But I can only imagine what your feeling.
Inside the box that accompanies this letter, you will find all the information you want or need to know about your father. Over the years, your mother and I have gathered everything we could about him, up until his recent passing in 2046. We deeply regret never telling you the truth about your real father, therefore robbing you of the chance to get to know him. We both knew it was wrong of us never to tell you about him or that I was not your biological father.
But I am honored and proud to call you my son and I will always consider you in that light, my own flesh and blood; and I know in my heart, and hope that one day you will forgive your mother and I for the secret we kept from you, all the lies we told you.
Take care my son,
Your loving father

He reread the letter twice more, absorbing what his father had written. Shock settled in at finding out that Patrick Manning was not his biological father, but he was the only father that he ever knew. The man that wiped his nose when he had a cold. Put his comforting arms around him when he had bad dreams. Encouraged him in following his dream, in his father’s footsteps of becoming a lawyer. The words of wisdom he spoke of when he failed the bar examine the first time, to finally open his own practice 10 years ago.
He felt the gentle squeeze on his arm, eyes brimming with tears he turned to his wife.
"Kyle, I’m so sorry to learn about this with you. But I’m not even going to say ‘I know how you feel’ because I don’t."
Kyle took her hand in his and softly kissed the back. "Just being here with me is enough."
Lynn Holden, a close friend and family lawyer for the Manning’s for the last 25 years had drawn up the paper work for Patrick’s Last Will in Testament, leaving everything to Kyle and his family. She had no knowledge of this letter that Kyle just read, until the day Patrick brought it to her to sign. Lynn was just as shocked as Kyle.
"Kyle." Lynn started, intent on telling him about the letter. "You must know that I had no knowledge of this information, until he brought that letter for me to sign. And being his lawyer, I couldn’t go against lawyer/client confidentiality."
"I understand Lynn. Did you look at any of the paper that they put in that box?"
"No, there are several large folders inside that are sealed." Lynn stood up and brought the file folder size box around her desk.
Kyle stood up and looked at her, then eyed the box. Taking it from her he glanced at Beth. "Thank you Lynn, for everything. I’ll take this home and look through it there."
"If you need anything, anything at all, call me anytime."
"I will." Kyle replied and leaned over to kiss her cheek.
The drive home was quiet. Beth glanced out of the rearview mirror then over at her husband. She reached across the seat and took his hand, lacing her fingers through his.
Beth pulled up in front of their modest home an hour later, having stopped first to get take out. Kyle carried the box into his home office and sat it on the desk, and just stared at it a moment, then went to pour himself a stiff drink from the mini bar.
Kyle sat heavily in his leather chair, the last few weeks spinning in his head. His father passed away just a week ago, after a long bout in the hospital from a massive heartache, then the funeral and today the reading of his will. Everything in Patrick’s will was secondary, all accept the news that Patrick wasn’t his father, but another man he knew nothing about, and had also passed away.
‘Why would dad even say anything if I would never get the chance to meet this man?’ Kyle pondered.
Kyle took a deep breath. ‘Doesn’t matter about who my real father is. Patrick Manning is my father. The one that raised me, took care of me and stood by my side when I needed him.’
Beth knocked softly on the door. "I brought dinner in here for us."
Kyle sat the box on the floor and Beth sat his plate on the desk. They ate in silence at first.
"How are you doing?"
"Fine I guess, little much to take in. I mean, here I thought all my life that Pat was my father…come to find out that he’s not. I should be angry at both of them for lying to me all these years."
"Kyle you don’t have a mean streak in you, you never get angry about anything. You didn’t even blow your top or yell at Kristen when she totaled the car."
"She learned a lesson by buying me a new one." Kyle chuckled. "Do you want to go through this box with me?"
"Are you ready to do that? You just found this out, maybe you should wait a little while."
"No better time like the present." Kyle said and flipped the top off of the box. He pulled out the first envelope. He broke the seal and reached in and pulled out pictures, newspaper, magazine clippings and several audio cd’s.
"These date back to late 70’s, earlier 80’s."
Beth picked up the cd’s and read the titles aloud. "Def Leppard, On Through the Night, High N Dry, Pyromania. I know these guys, use to listen to them in high school."
"Dad didn’t mention any names. What are we suppose to do? Guess which one it is."
"I think you kind of look like him." Beth pointed to the picture on his desk.
"The eyes and mouth maybe. He looks really young in this one." Kyle shifted through more photos. "I may have a half brother or sister out there somewhere." He mumbled more to himself.
"Its possible. Maybe that’s why Dad told you, he might have thought that you would pursue this a little further and find out if you do have any. Maybe the other envelopes will have that information, maybe it doesn’t. Let’s finish with this one first."
"Lot of maybes." Kyle rubbed his eyes and they began reading all the articles in the first envelope and looking at the photos.
By the time they had poured through all four envelopes, it was well after midnight. Kyle was stunned when, in the last envelope there was a letter from his mother. Explaining everything about that night and who his father was. The picture that accompanied that letter told the truth, along with the DNA documentation that Patrick Manning was not his father. Nowhere in all the information they gathered, was there mention whether or not his real father had any other children. He thought that was strange. If they wanted him to know about all of this, why not that? Did they want him find these answers himself? Maybe he didn’t have anymore. Maybe they didn’t tell him for a reason, to get him look for them or any other family. All these thoughts ran through his head as they settled in bed. Kyle gazed off into the semi darkness of the room, trying to turn his mind off or think about something else.
"Do you want to go on vacation?" he said after awhile.
"That sounds nice. But what about all your cases?"
"I can let someone else do them."
"Alright. Where are we going?" Beth asked him.
"Dublin, Ireland."
