Chapter 6:
Lucifer paced up and down his room, arms crossed firmly behind his back. He awaiting the return of his son, who he was hoping would finally have caught the misfit that had so blatantly ignored his orders, deceiving him beyond any he had ever experienced. He knew his son was the best tracker he’d ever seen and he found it curious that there was still no sign of Vengeance.
There was a knock at his chamber door that broke his thoughts. He turned in the direction, calling out “enter” as the door opened, revealing just his son. Lucifer could not hide his disappointment and Synyster knew straight away.
“I’m sorry-” Synyster began but his father cut him off.
“What I don’t understand is how one so young is so allusive?” Lucifer snapped, glaring maliciously at his first born. “You are meant to be the best tracker I have.”
“I don’t understand it either father.” Synyster answered. “I feel I am getting closer to finding him.”
“How you FEEL about this is completely irrelevant to me, you stupid boy.” Lucifer snarled. “I expect the best and I want this task completed. If you are not up to scratch with this, I will send someone who is able to.”
“Father, I’m sorry. I know this is not easy for you to handle but I will find him and bring him back.” Synyster pleaded. “I know I am close to getting him. Have faith in me, please.”
Lucifer snorted. “You expect me to FAITH in you when all you bring me is disappointment?”
“Please father. One more night and I will find him.” Synyster pleaded.
“You have tonight to capture that rogue otherwise your duty will be given to other hands that are capable of doing as I ask.” Lucifer snapped, narrowing his black eyes at him.
“Yes father, I will.” Synyster bowed slightly.
“I mean it boy.” Lucifer threatened. “You will be in for punishment more severe then any you have ever experienced if he isn’t in my possession by tomorrow morning.”
Synyster nodded and left the chambers, feeling a sudden weight on his shoulders. He knew his father would grow impatient but he did not realize it would be this soon.
He walked through the long, winding corridor, ignoring all who tried to talk to him, his eyes focused on what was directly in front of him while his thoughts ran circles in his head. He continued walking until he reached his own bedroom, slamming the door shut with a sharp snap.
He had just sat down on his bed when he heard three sharp knocks on his door. “What?” He called out, running his fingers through his hair.
He heard the door open and looked up to see Shadows and Christ closing the door behind them. This enraged him beyond belief. “What right do you have to just waltz into my room like that?” He snarled, making the other two visibly wince.
“We just wanted to see if you were okay.” Shadows said in a small voice that did not match his body.
“Of course I’m okay!” Synyster yelled. “What would make you think I’m not?”
“We heard you’ve been having trouble catching Vengeance.” Christ said, also in an uncharacteristically small voice.
“What business is it of yours?!” Synyster raged, his eyes glaring invisible daggers through the other two. “Oh, that’s right. It’s not. So mind your own fucking business!”
“We know you know where he is.” Shadows said in a slightly stronger voice, which made Synyster get up from his bed and race over to where the other two were, standing nose to nose with Shadows. “There’s no use and no need to be lying to us.”
“Do you honestly think that if I knew where Vengeance was I would be lying to my father?” Synyster snarled right into Shadows face. “How dumb do you think I am?!”
“We have seen you.” Shadows said, a grin growing slightly on his face. “We have seen you stand outside his window and watch. Even we know where he is.”
“And what are you going to do about it?” Synyster snapped, pinning Shadows against the wall.
“We could tell Lucifer all about this and get the glory for ourselves.” Christ mused. In an instant, Synyster’s right hand grabbed a hold of the scruff of Christ’s shirt and pinned him against the wall.
“I could kill both of you in an instant.” Synyster threatened.
“You won’t.” Shadows teased in a sing-song voice.
“You really want to test that?” Synyster snapped.
“We want in on whatever you and Vengeance are planning.” Christ answered.
“Absolutely not.” Synyster snarled.
“And why not?” Shadows challenged. “Isn’t four better then two?”
“Yours and Christ’s powers combined are barely worth one full strength demon. Having you on our side would be almost pointless.” Synyster raged. Then it hit him exactly how these two could be useful. “Alright. I shall allow you to work with us, under the strict authority that you swear your allegiance to me and to me alone. If you betray my trust, you will shrivel and die.” He released the two and stepped three feet away from them.
“I swear my ultimate allegiance to you, Synyster Gates. I will serve you until the end.” Shadows answered, kneeling down before his new master.
“I swear my allegiance to you, Synyster Gates. I will be under your command until the end.” Christ responded, kneeling down next to Shadows.
Synyster smirked down at the pair. Oh, how foolish they were being, he thought. “Come. We have things to attend to.”
---
It was a bright, warm, sunny day at the park. The sky was a perfect shade of blue with absolutely no clouds in the sky. Vengeance was sitting by himself at a bench, watching the life grow around him, realizing that he had made the right decision in saying “no”. But then he realized that perhaps the task he’d given himself was even too big for his own ego.
His attention was dragged away from his own thoughts when he noticed someone sitting down on the bench next to him. He turned his head to the right to see a tall, thin man with dark messy hair drinking a bottle of Jack Daniels. This confused him. “Bit early for that, isn’t it?” Vengeance remarked and the man turned to look at him. It shocked Vengeance even more when he saw the white clerical collar. “I didn’t think Reverend’s were even allowed to drink.”
“Boy, in this day and age, there are many things that are frowned upon. But I see nothing wrong with indulging in a drink every once in a while.” The man slurred with a sloppy grin. “And I’m not what most would call your average Reverend.”
“I see.” Vengeance said awkwardly, trying to avoid anymore conversation with the man.
“My friends call me The Rev.” The man was still grinning at him. “What’s your name?”
“My name is Ven…erm…I mean Zack.” Vengeance answered.
The Rev gave him a skeptical look. “Boy, there is no use lying to a man of God. I know exactly who you are, Vengeance.”
Vengeance was shocked and confused. “How do you know my name?”
“I possess a unique gift which allows me to see visions of certain people that are in any way valuable to God.” The Rev explained. “I have seen visions of you since you were a boy. I’ve known you were destined for greatness.”
“I would hardly call what I’m doing ‘greatness’.” Vengeance snapped. “I am nothing but a murderer.”
“All you do is necessary in your path to victory.” The Rev smiled, taking a long gulp of his drink. “You should realize your true potential of wiping Lucifer off this Earth. It is not only God’s wish but the wish of all living things.”
“He wants me to kill Synyster so he can walk free.” Vengeance spoke, ignoring the Rev’s blue eyes trying to connect with his. “I don’t want to hurt Synyster. I love him. I want to kill Lucifer but I have no idea how.”
“Synyster is your answer.” The Rev answered simply. “He is the only way that you will complete your task. He will help you if you ask.”
“I have no plan!” Vengeance sighed.
“It will come to you.” The Rev answered with a shrug before standing up. “I wish I would have gotten more time to help you. Good luck on your quest. Remember God is smiling over you even though you have the wicked blood pumping through your veins.”
“Where are you going?” Vengeance asked curiously.
“It is my time to go.” The Rev said smiling. “Perhaps one day we will meet again when it is our time to.”
“I would like that.” Vengeance said quietly.
“Until then, good bye, my friend.” The Rev smiled before walking away.
“Good bye, friend.” Vengeance called out to him, missing out on seeing the Rev’s smile grow a little larger.
He watched as the tall, thin man walked away. But he had only walked maybe ten metres before there was a huge, bright shining light and the Rev had disappeared. And when he disappeared, so did the sunshine.
Vengeance was not quick enough as the rain came from nowhere, bucketing down. He did not mind as he walked through the heavy rain. He was now more determined then ever to complete his plan.
