On Wednesday between classes at the New York Conservatorium of Music Josh’s Blackberry rang. He put down the Strad and immediately answered it when he saw it was Louisa ringing.
‘Well hello beautiful’ he said brightly.
‘Oh you’ Louisa said with a giggle ‘you’re just trying to suck up to me’
‘Is it working?’
‘Aw just a bit’ Louisa said with a giggle ‘how’s your day been so far?’
‘Busy’ Josh said ‘just finished my sixth lesson for the day. I’m taking a break for lunch then there’s two classes an hour til four ‘o clock. I’ve been doing that all week and I’ll do it til Thursday’
‘So are there any Joshua Bell clones?’
‘No none can match the mighty mighty skill of the Bell Man!’ Josh joked.
‘Arrogant arse’ Louisa said with a giggle ‘hey I have a bit of news’
‘Hmm?’
‘I GOT THE JOOOOOOOOOOOOB!’ Louisa screeched so loud Josh had to hold the Blackberry away from his ear ‘I’ve just found out now, like thirty seconds before I rang you’
‘Seriously? Congratulations!’ Josh said ‘that’s great when do you start?’
‘Tomorrow literally straight away that’s how short they are’ Louisa rushed ‘seriously Josh this is the best news really it is!’
‘Well we have something to celebrate on Saturday when we go out then won’t we?’ Josh said.
‘We will so any clues as to where you’re taking me?’
‘Nope I want it to be a surprise’ Josh said ‘but you’ll need to text me your address so I can pick you up’
‘I can do that, what’s the dress code?’
‘Casual nothing fancy, maybe that’ll be the second date’ Josh said.
‘If you’re taking me on the first date I have to take you on the second it’s in the rule book’ Louisa said with a giggle.
‘There’s a dating rule book?’ Josh said in amusement.
‘An unwritten one yes’ Louisa said ‘so casual I can do that I live in casual clothes when I’m not working or actually going out I bum about in jeans and a jumper’
‘Sounds good’ Josh said ‘well I have to go my next lesson is here I’ll be in touch alright?’
‘Okay J take care’
‘You too sweetheart’

Josh rose early on Saturday morning and went for a run in Central Park smiling as he ran past the spot where he and Louisa met. He then returned to his apartment and took longer than usual to get ready for his date with Louisa smiling every second and even breaking out into tuneless whistling.
Shortly after eleven he got into his car an took the short drive across the East River to Long Island making a stop to pick up a bunch of yellow red tipped roses along the way. He arrived at Louisa’s house shortly before midday. Parking behind an enormous RV and a brand new utility he got out and walked up the front path the sound of Louisa playing her violin filtering out from a nearby open window. He paused to listen for a few moments before lifting a hand and knocking smartly on the door.
Instantly the shrill sounds of a young puppy barking began followed by Louisa yelling ‘SHUT UP!’ Then slowly a soft feminine silhouette came into view through the glass. The door opened and a barefoot Louisa with her hair up in a messy ponytail and wearing a feminine white blouse and knee length jeans stood there. She smiled when she recognised her visitor.
‘Hey you’ she said standing aside to let him in ‘come in’
‘These are for you’ Josh said stepping inside.
‘Ooooh yellow roses my favourite’ Louisa said taking the bouquet and sniffing the fragrance deeply ‘thankyou you’re very sweet’
Louisa stood up on her toes and kissed him softly on the lips. Josh put an arm around her waist and gently pulled her close. Their kiss deepened before they were interrupted by a tri colour puppy racing up to them and bouncing around yapping madly.
‘Mocha go away!’ Louisa said dryly leaning down to pat her dog on the head ‘J this is Mocha my airhead puppy guard dog she is not every visitor to the house is her friend’
Josh crouched down and scooped the squirming bundle up.
‘So this is the puppy you got at the ASPCA?’ he asked.
‘Yeah she was the last one left of a six pup litter’ Louisa said ‘come through to the kitchen and I’ll put these in a vase’
Still carrying Mocha Josh followed Louisa throughout the enormous house to the back and into the kitchen where a faint scent of fresh paint hung in the air.
‘I hope the paint smell isn’t too bad the contractors only finished on Wednesday’ Louisa said laying the roses on the bench and opening a nearby cupboard where she retrieved an elegant glass vase ‘I’ve had all the windows open to try and get rid of the smell’
‘No it’s fine’ Josh said putting Mocha back down on the floor ‘I like what you’ve done with this place’
‘Thanks’ Louisa said with a smile filling the vase up with water ‘the house is done. I just have to get the backyard done now’
‘Are you getting contractors in or doing it yourself?’ Josh asked sitting down on one of the bar stools’
‘For the most part contractors are going to do it’ Louisa said ‘they’ll do the paving and deck and entertainment area and I’ll do the landscaping. I love gardening it’s a peaceful past time’
‘D’you get a chance to do it much?’
‘Not really’ Louisa said adding a can of lemonade to the water and putting the roses in the vase ‘I’ve been on the road since I arrived in the States and never been anywhere long enough to start a garden’
‘So you lived in your RV when travelling about?’ Josh asked.
‘Yeah about half the time’ Charlotte said ‘other than that I would stay in trailer parks or with the owner of the practice I was working for or even in a rented room in a share house. But it all catches up on you, you know? Manhattan and the surrounds were my favourite places to go when I first arrived so I decided to settle here’
‘Well I for one am glad you did’ Josh said as she put the roses in the centre of the dining table and stood back to admire them ‘we wouldn’t have met if you had kept up your nomadic lifestyle’
Louisa turned around and walked over to him.
‘You’re right we wouldn’t have’ she said shyly taking one of his hands.
There was a long agonizing silence.
‘You don’t have to be shy with me you know that?’ Josh said lifting her chin up so she was forced to look him straight in the eyes ‘I have the feeling you’re holding yourself in be yourself I’m not going to bite you know’
‘Yeah I know’ Louisa mumbled as Josh drew her close ‘it’s just....’
‘It’s what?’
‘This is just all new for me you know Josh?’ It’s been so long since I’ve been in a relationship I’ve almost forgotten how to behave in one. And the last person I was with wasn’t very nice to me in the end so I’m just being cautious. Sorry if that sounds stupid’
‘No it doesn’t’ Josh said ‘we’re both in the same situation you know. I know what it’s like to be hurt and I’m being cautious too but I really like you Louisa and I do want to get to know you better’
Louisa smiled.
‘I want to get to know you better too’ she said ‘but one rule you must obey if you’re to ‘get to know me better’
‘Oh and what’s that?’ Josh asked in amusement lacing his fingers through hers.
‘Do not call me Louisa’ Louisa said with a grin ‘only my Nanna calls me that. I prefer Louie, Lou, Ellie, Missy or even Za but only my nephews call me that’
‘Okay I can manage that’ Josh said lifting up one of her hands and kissing her knuckles ‘incidentally what happens if I do call you Louisa?’
‘You don’t get a second date’ Louisa said with a flirtatious giggle ‘so be nice and next week I’ll be the one taking you out’
‘I’ll behave myself then’ Josh said resting his forehead against hers his lips only an inch away from hers ‘you just remember to call me Josh or J and not Joshua and we’ll be cool’
‘You’re flirting with me Mr Bell’ she said the warmth of her breath tickling his face.
Josh dipped his head and gently pressed his lips to Louisa’s. She responded with enthusiasm gripping his hand tightly and kissing him back. Josh experimentally pressed the tip of his tongue against her lips and instantly their kiss deepened.
‘Was that your idea of a first date?’ Louisa asked breathlessly minutes later as they pulled apart ‘because as much as I enjoyed that I had counted on actually going somewhere’
Josh grinned.
‘Yes I plan on actually taking you somewhere’ he said in amusement ‘go and grab your purse and put some shoes on and we’ll head off alright?’
‘Okay’
Louisa disappeared back upstairs and Josh waited for her by the front door. An imperious looking brown Burmese cat wandered up to him and stared him out intently.
‘Hey puss’ he said crouching down and holding out a hand ‘what’s your name pal?’
The cat deigned to walk forward one step and extend his neck to sniff Josh’s hand then after several long moments of intense sniffing he rubbed his head on Josh’s hand then twined his lithe body around it purring like a two stroke lawnmower.
‘I suppose you like me then huh?’ Josh said having a look at the cat’s I.D ‘Cookie huh? That’s a good name for a cat’
‘Yeah he thinks so too’ came Louisa’s amused voice from the stairs.
Josh looked up to see Louisa with he hair pulled back into a tight pony tail and a light touch of make up upon her face standing at the base of the steps a huge grin plastered across her face.
‘What’s so funny?’ Josh asked as Cookie turned 360 degrees and padded over to Louisa.
‘You talking to a cat’ Louisa said with a grin bending down to pat Cookie on the head ‘you’re a cat person huh?’
‘I’m an any animal person really’ Josh said ‘I grew up with cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, horses you name it. If I didn’t travel so much I would have a dog or cat now’
‘Well it’s good you’ve made friends with Cookie he doesn’t like everyone’ Louisa said.
‘Did you get him at the A.S.P.C.A too?’
‘Nah he’s an ex breeding cat I rehomed from a breeder in Florida last year’ Louisa said ‘he had finished his breeding career so I neutered him and he’s been my constant companion on the road. He likes to sun himself on the dashboard of the RV when it’s warm. I’d like to rehome more animals but the dog and cat are enough for now’
‘Right shall we go now?’ Wouldn’t want to waste the whole day kissing and talking to cats’
‘There’s nothing wrong with either of those two activities’ Louisa said with a grin as they left the house ‘I was kinda hoping we could do a bit more of the former today’
‘Let’s see how things go’
*********************************************************************************
Half an hour later Josh and Louisa arrived at Seven Seas a classy little seafood restaurant on the water with a view of Manhattan in the distance. They were shown to their table on the upper balcony where a warm mid autumn breeze was blowing.
‘You know I’ve driven past this place so many times since I’ve been in New York and never managed the time to call in for a meal’ Louisa said closing her eyes and inhaling the sea air.
‘Maybe we ought to come back here more often then’ Josh said ‘it’s not too early to have a designated preferred restaurant is it?’
‘Nah I don’t think so’ Louisa said softly ‘is there somewhere on the other side of the River we could go to as well?’
‘Yeah I know of somewhere’ Josh said ‘maybe that can be the third date’
‘You’re assuming we’ll have a second date Mr Bell’ Louisa said flirtatiously reaching across the table and lacing her fingers through his.
‘Would you like a second one?’ Josh asked squeezing her hand ‘considering this one has barely started yet?’
‘Of course’ Louisa said ‘wether it be a jam session or dinner somewhere or even a cheesy movie night in. I’d go for a second third fourth fifth sixth til I lost count’
A waiter approached their table.
‘May I take your order Sir Ma’am?’
‘You go first I’m still deciding’ Josh said to Louisa.
‘Yeah can I please have the macadamia and chilli pan fried snapper?’ Louisa asked ‘with a side of chips and green salad’
‘Anything to drink with that ma’am?’
‘A white wine’ Louisa said ‘something that will go with the fish. I’m no wine expert can you pick something out for me?’
‘Of course ma’am sir have you decided yet?’
‘Yeah I’ll have the deep sea bass with cream sauce’ Josh said ‘with a fries and green salad side, and an appropriate wine to go with it’
‘Sure’
‘So tell me all about your first week at the new job’ Josh said to Louisa ‘was it as interesting as the interview?’
‘No not really I only treated two horses’ Louisa said ‘I spent the whole time going through old case notes and clinic paperwork and getting to know where all the equipment was. Monday is when the serious stuff starts’
‘Like surgeries?’
‘Yeah the boss of the practice wants me to help in the orthopaedic operation on this stud stallion from Saratoga. I like complicated surgeries like that that’s where I shine when I have a problem in front of me’
‘So do you specialise in any particular area of Equine medicine or do you treat anything?’ Josh asked in interest’
‘I’ll treat anything but my interest lies in the breeding industry’ Louisa said ‘I like trying to figure out why a mare won’t conceive or why a stallion’s fertility is low. Sometimes surgery is required but sometimes it’s as simple as a diet change. It can be a real puzzle’
‘So you worked in the same area of vet medicine in Australia?’
‘Yep though that was only my first year after graduation and I spent the whole time learning not doing anything too complicated. I’ve had five more years experience now and have the confidence to tackle any case that’s put in front of me’
‘So what do you do to relax?’ Josh asked ‘I know you like photography but that’s it’
‘Yeah the photography thing for me is a fairly recent thing’ Louisa said ‘a friend from University got me into it. I find it relaxing to sit somewhere like Central Park and take photos of people wandering by or a family of ducks swimming along. It’s my main creative outlet. I also like horse riding but I haven’t been in ages. And I’m a history buff I love nothing more than going to another country or town and going to all the historical sights. I went to Salem last year in between jobs and learnt all about the ancient witch trials. And I love love love Rome. I went there on my way to America back when Pope John Paul 2 died and Joseph Ratzinger was announced as his successor. I’m not Catholic but that was a brilliant time’
‘Have you been back since?’
‘No I came to the States shortly afterwards and I’ve been working ever since. The only travel I’ve done is for work or to go home for Easter and Christmas. I’d like to go on a holiday sometime. Somewhere sunny and tropical where I can just lie in the sun and drink Pina Coladas’
‘I’d imagine with your complexion you’d burn’
‘If I don’t use tons of sunscreen then yes I do’ Louisa said ‘I fell asleep on a beach when I was thirteen once and got so badly sunburnt I couldn’t walk, lie down or sit without excruciating pain for two weeks. Ever since then I’ve not gone out in the sun or I’ve lathered up and covered up. You on the other hand clearly tan. I’m jealous’
‘I don’t think you’d call this a tan’ Josh said dryly rubbing his forearms ‘but now I have a relatively free schedule til the new year so I might actually go somewhere for some sun and surf’
‘D’you have a preferred holiday destination?’
‘Yeah I love going to Bermuda’ Josh replied fiddling with the corner of his napkin ‘though I haven’t been there for several months. I might go in the new year’
‘I’d love to go there it looks so beautiful’ Louisa said with a sigh ‘I’ve only ever seen pictures of it’
‘Well depending on how things go maybe you can come with me when I go’ Josh said with a smile ‘it wouldn’t be much fun to go on my own’
Charlotte blushed.
‘I’d like that’
*********************************************************************************
After a long and luxurious lunch Josh and Louisa left Seven Seas and drove to the other side of the island and went for a walk through Kingston Park a small patch of greenery full of duck ponds and walking paths.
‘Shall we sit for a while?’ Josh said as they arrived at yet another duck pond.
‘Yeah let’s’
They walked over to the bench and sat down. Josh tentatively put an arm around Louisa’s shoulders and pulled her close to him. She put her head on his shoulder and sighed loudly.
‘You tired?’ Josh asked playing with a lock of her hair.
‘Nah just thinking about what a good day I’ve had’ Louisa said ‘it’s nice to have someone who isn’t family take you out and make a fuss of you. I can’t remember the last time someone gave me a bunch of roses they were lovely thankyou’
‘That alright’ Josh said going pink in the face ‘lovely roses for a lovely woman’
‘Oh you have all the moves don’t you Bell?’ Louisa said with a coy smile.
‘Are they working?’ Josh said with a great snort of laughter.
Louisa kissed him o the cheek.
‘They are’ she said softly giving him a wink
*********************************************************************************
Josh and Louisa sat in the park til it started to get dark the walked hand in hand back to Josh’s car and drove back to Louisa’s house.
‘Would you like to come in for a coffee?’ she asked.
Josh kissed her on the lips.
‘It’s probably best I don’t’ he said ‘maybe the next date huh? What you say goes there’
Louisa’s eyes sparkled.
‘You sure you want to give me all that responsibility?’ she said in amusement her lips centimetres away from his ‘I might plan something weird’
‘I trust you’ Josh said brushing her cheek with the pad of his thumb ‘just no sky diving or bungee jumping or anything like that alright?’
Louisa giggled.
‘Okay I can deal with those restrictions’ she said ‘well I better go inside thanks for a lovely day I had the best fun’
Josh leaned forward and gently pressed his lips against Louisa’s she put a hand on the back of his neck and closed her eyes leading into her kiss. Josh put a hand on her thigh and probed her mouth with the tip of his tongue. Louisa squeaked a little and opened her mouth allowing him access and instantly making their contact more intimate.
‘Wow that was a kiss and a half’ Louisa said breathily when only the ravenous need for oxygen parted them ‘a great way to end a great day’
‘We’ll have to do some more again next time we go out then’ Josh said running a thumb over her lips.
‘I’ll definitely be up for that’ Louisa whispered ‘well I better go I’ll be in touch about the next date alright?’
Josh kissed her again.
‘I look forward to the call’ he said ‘take care’
‘You too J’
Louisa got out of the car and walked up to the front door. Josh started the engine again and giving her a wave roared off down the street heading to Manhattan a goofy grin upon his face.
