Part 6 – Telephone:
“Can call all you want but there’s no one home
And you’re not gonna reach my telephone” - Lady GagaThe past week and a half had been a very happy and exciting time for Zack. Brian had been staying in his apartment with him for the last week and a half, which gave him hope that his boyfriend was serious about their relationship and that they were moving forward together. But he did notice a change in his demeanor that worried him. Brian was a loud, outgoing person and it confused him to see his lover turn into a quiet and shy individual. He didn’t know if it was just because he was out of his comfort zone or what it was but he tried not to let it worry him too much.
Not that Matt was acting much better.
Zack began to notice that his best friend was starting to get a little uncomfortable around him. Matt still talked to him at normal at work but refused to talk about Brian in any shape or form. He made it obvious to Zack on that day that he didn’t approve of what he was doing and was definitely not shy about hiding his feelings. It hurt Zack knowing that his best friend didn’t like his boyfriend, but he knew why he didn’t. But what hurt the most was how Matt was almost refusing to see him outside of work. Zack had tried numerous times to spend time with his best friend when he had spare time on the weekends, but every single time, Matt would make up an excuse to not see him.
He returned home from work one Friday night to find Brian sitting in the lounge room, fully dressed, his back pack sitting in front of him. He shut the door and walked over to sit next to his lover.
“What’s going on?” He asked carefully.
“I’ve booked my flight.” Brian said quietly, turning to look at his lover.
“When for?” Zack asked, slightly taken aback.
“Tonight 9.45pm.” Brian responded flatly.
“Tonight?” Zack repeated.
“Yes.” Brian answered. “You didn’t think I’d be able to stay forever, did you?” He added with a slight smile.
“Well, no.” Zack said, smiling slightly as he added, “But I was kinda hoping you would.”
“You’re so cute.” Brian smiled. “It’s not like I want to leave.” He shrugged. “But I have a job and shit to get back to.”
“Not if I kidnap you!” Zack laughed as he jumped on and straddled his lover.
Brian laughed too as he ran his hands across Zack’s thighs. “I’m going to miss you.”
“Same.” Zack said flatly. “Do you want me to drop you at the airport tonight?”
“Please.” Brian said with a smile.
The next few hours passed by in, what felt like for Zack, an instant. Before either of them knew it, they were in Zack’s tiny red car and driving towards the airport. The pair talked animatedly to each other during the entire car ride and it wasn’t until they finally reached the airport that it all started to sink in for them.
After Brian checked in, the pair sat quietly together at one of the available tables, just watching each other.
Zack was at a loss for words. He had no idea what he could say that wouldn’t make him sound needy or desperate. He was absolutely terrified that the same thing would happen again but was much more embarrassed to voice his concerns in such a public place. Instead, he fidgeted with his phone, locking and unlocking it repeatedly, eyes dropped away from his boyfriend’s, far too worried about the possibility of tearing up when he looked into those ever seeing brown eyes.
He stopped fidgeting with his phone immediately when he felt one of Brian’s calloused hands tilt his head up to look at him. “This isn’t the end, babe.” Brian smiled. “We’ll see each other again soon.”
“I know.” Zack said glumly.
“Then, what’s wrong?” Brian asked, his face creasing with concern.
“Nothin’.” Zack shrugged, but his face told a completely different story.
Brian watched him carefully for a moment before asking, “You’re worried that history will repeat itself, aren’t you?”
Zack shifted uncomfortably in his seat and pulled away from Brian’s touch, but still maintained eye contact. “No!” He said dramatically, his voice breaking slightly. Brian shot him a disbelieving look. “Well, kinda…yeah.” He sighed after a moment.
“Don’t you trust me?” Brian asked, there was an extra hint of something that glimmered in the corner of his eyes.
“You’ve given me a pretty good reason not to.” Zack said plainly.
“I know.” Brian said calmly. “But I won’t do it again.”
“How can I believe that?” Zack asked.
“I don’t want to hurt you ever again.” Brian said almost defiantly. “You mean the absolute world to me.”
Before Zack even had a chance to respond, there was a page that echoed across the airport. “Flight 34C to Los Angeles now boarding.” The female, generic voice announced over the intercom.
Brian stood up. “I love you Zacky.” He said as he outstretched his arms for a hug from the other man.
Zack almost jumped up and into Brian’s arms, their bodies pressing close together and for the first time in his life, he felt unashamed to be intimate with another man in public. He pulled back from the hug slightly to press his lips firmly to Brian’s. “I love you too.” He said with a smile after he reluctantly pulled back from the kiss.
“I’ll see you real soon.” Brian smiled, pecking Zack on the lips a final time before the pair finally separated.
“Let me know when you land.” Zack said nervously.
“Of course I will.” Brian smiled as he waved at his lover as he went through the boarding gates.
Zack stayed there for a moment, just watching all the people in the airport, jealous that he wasn’t flying out with his love that night. With great reluctance, he finally left the airport and headed home.
---
The sun managed to creep through the blinds and shine directly into Zack’s eyes, waking him up immediately the next morning. He tried to roll over and fall back asleep, but found that he was unsuccessful. He knew that once he was awake, that was it. He pulled himself out of bed and grabbed his phone, smiling when he saw he had a message waiting for him. He read it in an instant and replied just as quick, even though he knew it would be at least a few hours away before he received a reply.
He walked out to the lounge room and yawned as he parked himself on his lounge in front of the television. He had barely slept at all last night. He point blank refused to go to bed until he received the all clear from Brian and if that meant that he wasn’t going to sleep, then so be it. But even when he did receive the all clear, he stayed up just a little bit longer, continuing to text his boyfriend like a love sick school girl until he finally collapsed out of sheer exhaustion.
He looked at the clock as he sprinkled some food into Blacky’s fish bowl. It was almost 9am. He felt upset that he didn’t at least get to spend the weekend with his boyfriend, but he understood that Brian had to leave. He only wished that he didn’t after growing accustomed to waking up and seeing his sleeping form next to him.
His thoughts travelled to other places as he stared aimlessly at the television, the Saturday morning news was far from being interesting. He felt bad that he hadn’t even spoken to Val for the past few weeks; their newly formed friendship was pushed to the side because of Brian. He knew it was an irrational decision, but he decided that he was going to visit her and after a quick shower and change of clothes, he jumped into his car and drove over to her and Matt’s house.
As he pulled up at the house, he found himself feeling suddenly anxious. It wasn’t the thought of Val being busy or the chance that she wouldn’t be home. It was the thought of having an awkward conversation with the other man that gave him the most stress. He took a deep breath before he exited his car and walked to the front door, knocking three times on the heavy, wooden door.
Unsurprisingly, the door was opened by Matt, who was slightly taken aback by who the knocker was. “Hey Zacky.” He said with an almost forced smile.
“Hey.” Zack responded. “Is Val at home?”
“Yeah, she’s in the kitchen.” Matt answered. “Wanna come in?”
“Thanks.” Zack said quietly as he stepped into the house, shutting the door behind him.
“Babe!” Matt called out. “You have a visitor!”
Both the men heard the sound of a pair of stilettos scraping across the wooden floor before Val appeared in the lounge room. “Zacky!” She squealed as she ran over to Zack to give him a hug. “I was wondering when I’d be seeing you!”
“Since when have you been doing your cleaning in high heels?” Zack laughed.
“They’re new shoes. I’m just trying to break them in.” Val smiled. “So, what brings you all the way out here?”
“I wanted to talk to you.” Zack said quietly.
Val saw the look in his eyes that indicated that he wanted to speak just the two of them. She turned to her husband, “Matt, aren’t you supposed to be meeting Jimmy soon?”
Matt looked down at his watch. “Yeah, I should probably be going. I’ll see you later.” He said as he leant down to peck his wife on the lips. “See you Zacky.”
“Bye.” Zack said with a soft smile.
As soon as Val saw the front door close, she led Zack to sit on her black leather lounge. She looked at him expectantly, her eyes large with excitement and her mouth smiling so wide it looked like it was going to turn vertical. “Well?” She asked.
“It’s nothing exciting.” Zack said glumly as he watched Val’s face fall dramatically. “I feel terrible that you helped me out so much with my break up, only to end up going back to Brian.”
“It’s alright, Zacky.” Val said plainly.
“It’s not!” Zack protested, knowing he was being far too dramatic. As usual. “I’m pathetic that I couldn’t even resist him!”
“You love him.” Val said simply, causing Zack to crease his brow at her. “I’ve done the same thing before too. But my friend’s were less forgiving.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Zack said sympathetically.
“It’s okay. It was a long time ago.” Val said with a shrug. “But deep down we all know who we’re meant to be with and love isn’t always the smoothest ride. So what if you have to break up and make up a few times? You always get it right in the end.” She smiled as she finished.
“Was that man Matt, by chance?” Zack asked with a sly smile.
“Maybe.” Val answered with a giggle. “Are you doing anything tonight?”
Zack shook his head. “No, why?”
“I’m going out tonight with some friends and I’d love it if you’d join us?” Val asked hopefully.
“It’s a date.” Zack answered with a smile.
Zack and Val ended up chatting for another few hours before Zack decided that it was time that he went home. He spent the rest of the day lounging around at home in his baggy, old track pants and one of Brian’s old t-shirts that he had happened to leave there by mistake. But before too long, he found himself getting ready and out the door, ready for a fun night ahead.
But that wasn’t exactly how it happened.
He was having a blast, talking animatedly with all of Val’s friends, who immediately began to adore him, and having a few cocktails on the side of his amazing meal. He was having the time of his life, if it wasn’t for his phone constantly buzzing; either ringing or he was receiving a text.
He knew who it was.
He didn’t even have to look at his phone to see that it was Brian. But he had no idea why Brian was being so persistent. Brian seemed fine that he was going out tonight, but it still didn’t seem to explain why he was so desperate to get into contact with him. The ringing and texting only seemed to get worse when he finally replied, saying that they were going out to a club.
The constant buzzing got so bad that Zack couldn’t even stand feeling his phone in his pocket anymore and asked Val to mind it in her purse. He couldn’t stand how desperate and needy his boyfriend was being. But even she couldn’t stand the constant buzz and gave it back to Zack, who finally wrote back to one of his boyfriend’s messages with two words; ‘I’m busy’.
For a while there was no communication from Brian, which made Zack smile as he danced the night away with the group of girls, alternating between drinking cocktails and sipping on beer. He had forgotten just how much fun it was to go out. He was having the time of his life, dancing to the music like a complete idiot, loving the smile he got from everyone when he tried a new dance move.
That was until his phone started buzzing again. He knew that Brian wouldn’t stop until he talked to him and after checking the time, he knew it was time to go home. He said his goodbyes to his new friends and Val before he left the club, stumbling slightly as he started the short walk home.
He groaned as he finally relented and pulled his phone out of his pocket and clicked the ‘accept’ button. “Helloooo?” He slurred into the handset.
“Why haven’t you been answering?” He heard Brian’s voice snap at him.
“I’ve been busy, daaaancin’.” He slurred, grinning like a drunken idiot.
“Just dancing?” Brian asked shortly.
“Nah, I’ve been fuckin’ every fuckin’ person I can fuckin’ get my hands on.” He slurred before he burst into laughter. “Jokingggg!”
“Are you still out?” Brian asked plainly.
“On my way home, baaaaaabe.” He giggled as he burped right in the middle of the last word.
“How close are you?” Brian asked.
“So close.” He moaned into the phone.
“Stop being silly.” He heard Brian say playfully on the other end as he approached his building, stepping into the elevator.
“Going upp! Just like my penisss.” He giggled into the phone as the elevator dinged as he stepped out of the elevator on his floor. “I’m at my door.” He slurred as he fumbled with the key.
“Good.” Brian responded.
“Can youuuu stop ringing me now so I can go to sleep noww?” He whined as he closed his front door a little harder then he was expecting.
“Okay babe.” Brian said with a laugh. “Goodnight. I love you.”
“Lovee you.” He slurred as he pushed the hang up button on his phone before he collapsed on the bed and passed out.
A fitting way to end his alcohol fueled night.
