Part 6:
Brian watched the yellow cab drive away from him with his friend in the back seat, unable to move and feeling as if he couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that Zack had been punishing his body because of him. He couldn’t believe he had not noticed this earlier, although it wasn’t hard, Zack never really shared anything with the rest of them if he could help it.
He took a deep breath and folded his arms around his stomach, feeling so physically sick he could barely breathe, as he made his way back into the restaurant. He took his seat once again at the table and felt very uncomfortable when he knew that everyone was looking at him.
“Where’s Zack?” Jimmy asked.
“He wasn’t feeling too well so he decided to go home.” Brian said quietly, looking up into Gena’s eyes and could see the hurt and confusion. “He really likes you, I’m sure he’ll call you.”
“Thanks.” Gena said as a blush crept across her pale cheeks as she leant back to Leana and started giggling.
“Brian, what’s wrong?” Johnny asked, looking at his band mate carefully.
Brian opened his mouth to answer but nothing came out, instead he felt his emotions take over him and the tears that were standing their ground in his eyes spilled out the corners in quick succession. He dropped his head in his hands as his emotions got the better of him.
He could feel the consoling hand of his girlfriend rubbing circles on his back but it was not doing him any better, in fact he felt worse.
“Come on Brian, I’ll take you.” He heard Matt’s voice say and he looked up to see the beefy singer already standing up. “Can you take Shell home?” He asked Val, who nodded numbly.
“Thanks.” Brian said after a moment as he wiped away the tears that were still hanging around.
“I’ve got this.” Matt said as he pulled out his credit card. “Thanks for coming everyone. Come on Brian.”
Brian stood up, kissing Michelle on the side of the head before following blindly behind his singer as he paid at the front of the restaurant and then they went to Brian’s car. Brian threw him the keys to his 2006 Mustang and climbed into the passenger side of his car.
Matt started up the car, hearing the purr of the engine before he started driving off and he turned to look at Brian who was still very upset. “Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”
Brian let out a muffled sob as he spoke. “He did all this because he wanted to be like me.”
“What?” Matt asked, almost stalling the car as he started taking off from a red light.
“Zack told me that he wanted to be like me ‘cause I’m ‘perfect’.” Brian sobbed. “It’s all my fucking fault that he’s the way he is.”
“Brian, you didn’t force him to do anything. Don’t blame yourself for something he has chosen to do.” Matt said reasonably. “We’ve gotta sort this out.”
Brian looked out the window and realized that they were close to Zack’s house. “We can’t go see him.”
“Why not?”
“I am not going to make him feel guilty about this.” Brian said through muffled sobs. “He already feels bad enough about it.”
Matt paused for a moment before speaking again. “Then what are we supposed to do?”
Brian dropped his head into his waiting hands. “Why the fuck would I know the answer to that?”
Matt didn’t respond as he pulled into the familiar driveway of their rhythm guitarist. He didn’t dare to turn to his right, already knowing what sort of facial expression would be on the lead’s face. He slowly turned the ignition off on the car and opened the door, stepping out into the cold night, and feeling a little more at ease when he saw the light in the front room on.
He closed the door and was surprised when he saw Brian standing next to him, arms folded tightly across his chest, his eyes focused on nothing but the dull light that could be seen slightly from behind the curtains. Matt locked the door before the pair made their way up the slight hill and towards the wooden front door that stood so proudly.
He took a deep breath before he reached his hand up and knocked three times on the heavy wood with his knuckles. He turned to Brian as he heard the sound of someone fumbling inside the house. He breathed a sigh of relief when only a few moments later, Zack was poking his head through the door.
“What the fuck do you two want?” Zack spat. He was clearlynot happy to see two of his band mates at his door.
Matt, who was slightly taken back by their friend’s reaction, took a few moments before he spoke. “We just wanted to see that you were alright.”
Zack’s eyes narrowed into slits as he turned his attention solely onto Brian. “Why would you say that?”
“What was I supposed to say?” Brian said in a voice that was so unlike his own. “You are destroying yourself because of me! I’m not going to just sit back and pretend like nothing is happening.”
“You could have said nothing.” Zack hissed.
“You know I’m not that kind of person.” Brian said quietly, trying to dissolve the unnecessary tension.
“You two need to leave now!” Zack yelled as he tried to slam the door shut, only for Matt to throw his foot in between the door and the frame.
Matt leant forward and pried the door open with his large, muscular arms. The door made a sickening crack against the wall as Matt forced his way into his friend’s house, watching as the smaller man held his head in his hands, the much muffled sounds of crying could be heard. He turned around to look at Brian, who was very cautiously approaching Zack.
“Zacky?” Brian asked cautiously, crouching down on the floor in front of the couch Zack had collapsed on. It was to the smaller man’s left on the coffee table did Brian notice the already half-empty bottle of Jack Daniels’ standing to attention. “Why have you been drinking?”
It took a few moments, but Zack finally lifted his head from his hands to look at the other man’s eyes, his puffy, swollen ones looked almost painful. “I don’t have the confidence to go on dates like you do. I want to be perfect like you are.”
“Can you please stop saying that?” Brian said calmly, trying to hide the fact that his heart was breaking with guilt each time he looked at the other man.
“Why would I stop speaking the truth?” Zack said quietly, his cheeks flushing a soft pink.
“I’m not perfect.” Brian said with a slight smile.
But it was obviously the wrong thing to do as he watched Zack narrow his eyes once more. “Just admit it, you think you are better then me!” He spat.
“Zack, please stop.” Matt said quietly. “He doesn’t think he is at all.”
“Shut up!” Zack yelled, causing the two other men to take a slight step back.
“Zack-” Brian started, but was immediately cut off by Zack.
“I said SHUT UP!” Zack yelled impossibly louder before shoving Brian hard in the shoulders, causing the lead guitarist to fall back and land on his ass.
“What the fuck is your problem?!” Brian yelled as he stood up and stood over the smaller man. “Why do you hurt the people who try to help you?”
“What the fuck is your problem?!” Zack yelled back, standing up and forcing his face right into the slightly taller lead’s face.
When Brian didn’t answer, Zack shoved him hard in the chest again, propelling him back a few steps but he still kept standing. “Stop it!” Matt yelled, but it was blatantly ignored as Brian moved back to where he was before; right in Zack’s face.
“What is wrong with your head?” Brian snarled right in his face. “What makes you feel so fucking low that you get a woman’s disease?”
“Shut up!” Zack yelled again.
“Or what?” Brian smirked. “What’s little Zacky going to do to me?”
Brian had barely gotten the words out of his mouth before he felt a fist collide with his cheek. He took a few steps back, cradling his cheek and staring back at the man who had struck him.
“Hope you’re getting a good look at this.” Brian snapped. “Because this is the last time you will ever see me!”
He stormed out of the house without a backwards glance to the other two occupants and he climbed into the driver’s side of his car. It was only a few moments before he saw Matt running over to the passenger side and heard the loud slamming of Zack’s front door.
He started up the car just as Matt had climbed in and reversed out of the driveway and began driving at breakneck speed through the quiet, suburban streets. The pair stayed silent, not even the noise of the car could quell the awkward tension in the car.
“Why would say that to him?” Matt said quietly after a few minutes.
“Say what?” Brian snapped, not bothering to even look at his friend.
“Tell him he has a ‘woman’s’ disease.” Matt answered.
“Well, it’s true. He does.” Brian said shortly.
“You didn’t have to say it.” Matt responded quietly.
“Maybe it’ll snap him out of it.” Brian said casually as he rolled to a stop sign.
Matt took a deep breath before he spoke again. “You know you deserved that punch, right?”
Brian turned to look at the other man, eyes narrowed as the anger burned frighteningly inside him. “Excuse me?”
“You deserved getting punched like that.” Matt said again, this time a little stronger.
“Right.” Brian said shortly as he took off only to pull over to the side of the road a moment later. He turned to his singer, “get the fuck out of my car.”
“Are you joking?” Matt asked, slightly taken back.
“No.” Brian snapped. “Get out. Now.”
Matt looked at the other for a moment, almost regarding him before he opened the passenger door and stepped out into the night. He had just shut the door when he heard the screech of Brian’s tyres and watched the Mustang speed off into the night.
“Fucking great.” Matt murmured as he wrapped his arms around his stomach, trying to keep himself as warm as possible. It was a long walk home and he knew he had lots to think about to pass the time.
