Loosing Steve
Gregg was sleeping in a cloud of lavender. Steve washed his hair and body with lavender soap and it smelled delicious. Greg took a deep breath then opened his eyes. Moonlight shown in the window and Steve’s sleeping form was illuminated by it. He thought it was an incredibly beautiful sight. At Steve’s throat along with the 8th note shimmered a St. Christopher medal. A gift from his Mom to ensure safe travels, he had told Gregg. Gregg stroked the long silken strands of dark hair and said, “ I love you Steve. Let me take you home with me !!”
At that moment Steve stirred and opened his eyes. “ You love me really Gregg ? “ “ Yes, Steve and you can live with me. We can go to sleep together every night and wake up together in the morning. I have a house full of pets, two dogs , two cats, and a big tank full of fish. They are like extended family. They all sleep in the bedroom with me.” He giggled “ Well.. not the fish. And there’s Neal. “ Neal , “ Steve asked sounding a bit confused. Gregg said, “ Don’t worry. He is my roommate, not my boyfriend. “ “ He looked into Steve’s eyes and said” I don’t have anyone .. just you. Any way I have known Neal since he was 15, he was our guitarist in Santana. We are starting the band together. He can be a spoiled brat, a downright pain in the ass at times, but he is great guitarist. “ He was quiet a moment while Gregg gently stroked Steve’s face and hair. “Come home with me, Steve, please ! You won’t regret it. “ Steve leaned in and kissed Gregg, “ Make love to me again. “ he whispered. Gregg was more then happy to comply. When they were both spent, he cuddled the young man as he slept laying partially on Gregg’s chest. Peaceful and still enjoying the afterglow Gregg slowly drifted to sleep.-----------------------
Gregg’s eyes opened slowly, the night had been restful, he had slept deeply. He looked forward to spending the day with Steve, having him for company while driving back to San Francisco. He also planned to continue to try and convince Steve to stay with him. He fantasized about what it would be like to wake up every morning with the stunning brunette in his arms. He was sure they could have a very happy life together.
He shifted his position in the bed and realized he was missing Steve’s body warmth close to him. He blinked to shake the sleep out of his eyes and sat up. The bed next to him was empty and he didn’t hear the water running. He jumped out of bed and called, “Steve !” He reached for his robe and looked into the bath. It was empty as well. Wrapping his clothing tight around him, he looked out of the hotel room to see if Steve was maybe catching some sunlight. But he knew with a sinking feeling in his heart that he would not find Steve there. He quickly looked in the cabinet where Steve’s back pack had been. He was saddened but not surprised to see it was missing. There was no other answer , Steve was gone.
Then he saw it. Laying on the dresser was Steve’s St. Christopher medal. Underneath it was a carefully folded note.
Dear Gregg,
I in love with you. You have made it so easy for that to happen. The last three days have been the happiest of my life. You have made me feel gorgeous, attractive, and loveable in a way no one has. And you Gregg are the most amazing man I have ever met. You are incredibly sexy, smart, funny, and so loving and generous. And living in the house with the animal family and pain in the butt roommate sounds heavenly. I truly believe we could happy together there. I would love to wake up, both naked, warm in bed after a night of passionate lovemaking and dream filled sleep. And in the evenings to sit on the porch with the animals and snuggled together with you on the swing watching the sunset.
But Gregg you have your career established. You have already been a star and you are a star. You found your dream. Now I need to find mine. Every since I was a little boy I wanted to be a singer. As much as I would like to settle down and be your partner in life, I need to try and find my own path , my own success. I want to be a my own person first before I am a partner.
Hold onto my St. Christopher medal to remember my by. ( Like I would ever forget him Gregg thought to himself sadly)
I do love you Gregg. I always will. Hitchhiking home and you picking me up was was the best thing ever happened to me.
(Me too thought Gregg)
And I hope if you ever make it down to Hanford, you will please look me up !
Love,
Steve
Gregg sighed deeply. He realize that his soul mate may have just slipped away from him. And worse then that he may not ever be able to find him again.
He had never even aske d Steve his last name.
Greg slowly packed his bags, reflecting on the last several days. He carried the suitcases to the car then headed for the restaurant for an early lunch. He had already settled his bill and left a generous tip for the maid. He had to resist the crazy desire to take pillow Steve had slept on, so he could save his scent. He approached the door where the owner’s daughter Peace was playing with her doll on the porch. She looked up questioningly at Gregg and said “ Where is your friend ?” Gregg sighed “ He decided to move on.” Peace looked at him said “ You look so sad, I hope you will see him again some day. “ Gregg smiled at the little girl and handed her a flower he picked from the garden along the walkway. “ I hope I do too.” He went into the restaurant and ate a meal that he knew should have been good but was just tasteless to him. He paid for the meal and left the gratuity for the waitress . He used the payphone to call Herbie and Neal both, letting them know he would home that night He took one last look at the ocean view before he got in the car. He drove away, still smelling lavender, feeling the soft warmth of Steve’s touch, and hearing the beautiful crystal clear voice.
