Disclaimer: All I own are the plot and my OC's. Seriously, folks, I'm broke. Never met these guys; just a fluke dream I had and decided to expand on as cheap therapy. Please remember this is a work of fiction, as such, I don't get anything out of this. |
Chapter Five
Ash PoV
I woke up to her in the shower, the kids off to school already, and coffee already in the carafe. I couldn't help myself, I stood in the bathroom doorway as quiet as I could be while she showered. Though the shower curtain is clear, you can't see through it very well. But that doesn't mean I wasn't more than willing to sit through the show.
I was leaning against the doorway, sipping my coffee and enjoying the show until I heard her moan. It took every bit of self-control not to climb into the shower with her. I involuntarily gripped my mug so hard it nearly broke. I knew how thin she feels through her clothes, but holy fuck she is tiny.
My eyes skimmed over every inch of visible skin. I was so entranced by her naked back, that when my eyes traveled south, I wondered how her smooth, supple flesh would feel under my patient hands.
As she turned, I saw her stretch marks, long since turned to scars, and they didn't bother me. Starting at her ankles, I allowed my gaze to linger up her georgeous form, drinking in every curve, before coming to her face and, upon seeing one eye barely open, realizing she was watching me.
"Like what ya see, Darlin'?"
I cleared my throat, "I'd be lying if I said I didn't. But, Mama, please leave the door closed. Your skin is too tempting. And if you keep teasing me, I will end up in that shower with you."
"Promise," Leigh purred as she slid the shower curtain back, giving me the view I craved.
"Mama," I growled, "Stop. I told you we'd go slow and if you don't stop; it ain't gonna be slow and we ain't gonna get anything but you done today."
As I closed the door, I could hear her low, soft chuckle and she said, her voice low, "Once again, 'If a man can't handle me at Sophia, he doesnt deserve me at Blanche'."
I popped open the door just far enough for her to hear me and said, "Woman, I can handle you both ways, but right now just isnt the right time." I shut the door again and leaned back against it for a moment. After a minute, I heard the water shut off. I suddenly realized that maybe it wasnt such a good idea to be holding the door closed on a wildcat.
I stepped out onto the deck to calm down and think. But, everytime I tried to think, all I could think of was her ass. God, she is sexy. But it is a quiet sort of sexy. One wouldn't notice it unless...Uh-oh. Boy, am I in trouble.
Ok, so I love this girl. When the holy fuckin' hell did this happen! Why the hell wasn't I informed!
"Ashley," She said, her voice soft and questioning, from beside me. "Sorry. I shouldn't have done that. It's just been a long time."
"How long," I asked as I looked at her. She had thrown on warm clothes, but she wasn't wearing her coat.
"We had boiled down to roommates that occasionally slept together when we had his accident."
"How long," I asked again.
"Five years," she whispered as she looked down. "That is why I needed to move slower. You are the first guy in 5 years to actually be interested in me, not my money or my house."
"How much was the settlement?"
"Around 2m. The lawyer figured out how much to pay off the loans and college for the kids; then doubled it for taxes. The trucking company went bankrupt pretty soon after. I get a dividend check every year, around tax time, it keeps us afloat."
That night, after the kids went to sleep, Leigh sat down at the table with a stack of cards and asked, "Wanna play a bit of a game with me, Babe?"
I looked at her, all barefoot and beautiful. I tried to tell myself this thing with us would never work, but something else, something older, kept telling me that it would work out just fine.
"Okay, Mama, I'll bite. How do we play," I asked as I sat down across the table from her.
"This stack of cards has either a 1 or a 2 written on it, except for the ones with the red X on them. If you draw a card with a 1, you get to ask one question, that needs to be answered honestly. If you draw a card with a 2, you get two. If you draw one of the red X's, you get to ask a naughty question. There are only 35 cards in total. Ladies are always first, so," She said as she shuffled and then drew the first off of the top. "One. Favorite color?"
I laughed, "Chrome."
She laid her head on the table and snickered, softly singing the hook from Trace Adkins 'Chrome'.
I laughed, then drew. "One. What's yours?"
She smiled, soft and sweet, "Your eyes. They are the same hue as my coffee. Lord knows how often coffee has kept me sane."
"Really," I asked, not believing that this woman in front of me loved the color of my eyes. "Thank you," I said.
She drew next, getting a one. "One. What are you seeing when you stare at nothing?"
I laughed and replied, "Honestly, I am not seeing anything. My brain is on temporary shut down and I am ass-deep in a 'duh moment'." Then, I drew my card. "One," I sighed. "Was he really the one?"
Leigh sat there for a minute, before whispering, "No. He was there and I was tired of waiting on the right one. He was no more than an amusing distraction, at first. After a few years, I kinda felt somethin', but I don't think it was love. After Charlie was born, we rarely slept together," She answered and drew the next card.
"Red X. Hmm. What's a naughty question I wanna know the answer to. Hmm. Ok. If I waited til you were on tour and sent you nudes and dirty stories, what would your reaction be?"
I blushed a little, "Well," I started, "I might call to ask and make sure those were meant for me. If they were, I may say to save them until I get home, or that I would rather have the real thing. However, if a certain voice were reading me dirty stories, that would be whole different ball game; as would getting a nude pic with the text of 'call me'."
"And," she said.
"I would have to call then," I answered, blushing. How in the world did this woman, out of all the others I had known, turn me into a melty, blushy mess with just a question, word, or look?
When we crawled into bed that night, a part of me hoped the road was clear in the morning, but another part just wanted to stay in her bed, snuggled up with her until the end of the world.

The days had slipped past pretty quickly, and the roads were cleared the next morning, the rest of the band was waiting for Ash in Green Bay, having called off the Quad Cities due to the storm. I took him to the airport in Peoria.
As I walked with him, over to check in, he whispered, "Check your phone after I leave."
We hugged and he kissed my forehead and smiled softly at me, then turned and walked to the security check point.
I wondered what the hell he had done to my phone. I found his picture, his number and email, and a picture of the whiteboard in my kitchen, covered in sketches of me and the kids, with the message, ' I tried to commit you to memory. Thanx. Be home soon.'

As I met the guys just past security, I was caught up in a huge hug from Andy. I pushed him off a little roughly.
"Have fun over your weekend," Andy asked in a teasing voice.
"Yeah. I did, and I didn't even get laid."
Andy put his hand on my forehead and asked, "Are you ok? Who are you and what did you do with our Ashley?"
CC and Jake started snickering.
"Not a word, you two," I growled.
Jake just smiled, "Fine, you tell him."
I grumbled, "He don't need to know."
Jinxx caught on and grinned, "Good job. She must be something."
"What," Andy asked.
By this time, CC was holding his sides and laughing. "Oh, God, just tell him."
"Tell me what," Andy yelled, getting rather exasperated at us.
"He didn't get any because he didn't try. He didn't try because he is in love with that girl," Jinxx said, hitting the nail on the proverbial head.
I looked down, "Not that she didn't offer, but that I told her we'd go slow and...," I trailed off.
"...And you found yourself not wanting to leave," Jake finished.
I blushed and was thoroughly embarrassed.
CC smiled, "That's a nice shade of red on ya, Ash."
I felt my the ends of my ears start to tingle and quickly pulled my hood up. "Can we just go now," I whined. "I have had enough of airports and security checkpoints."
As we made for the door a security guard stopped me and handed me my bag, "Have a good day, Sir."
The guys just looked at me.
"Nothing," I said as I shook my head, hoping they would drop it.

He called later that evening.
"Did you see it?"
I smiled, "I did. When did this become home?"
He thought for a minute, "I'm not really sure. Jake and CC said something to me once that kinda hit me. 'Home isn't an address, it's a feeling'. They are right, as much as I hate to admit it."
We laughed a minute, before he said, "I hate flying."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I had to leave my entire bag with security. They put it in the cockpit with the pilot, because my needles were in it."
"Oh that sucks. Hope you weren't bored."
"Nah, I wasn't bored but I sure got a funny look when security brought it back to me."
"Did they figure it out?"
"Yeah. Eventually. We were just leaving the venue when I pulled out my needles. Andy gave me the funniest look and started pokin' fun at my hat. Jake kept asking me where I learned that at and if I could teach him. CC kept calling me 'Granny'. Jeremy mumbled something that sounded suspisously like 'Oh Thank God', and pulled out a book," Ash laughed.
I laughed along with him. "Did you take the one with the cables on it?"
"Yep. Glad I took the gray one.
I laughed, "I understand. Gray is easier than black. 'If you like someone, you make them something; If you love them, you make them something in black'."
Ash laughed. "Anyway, Doll-face, I gotta go. We have an early day tomorrow. I will call you before I get settled for the night."
"Night," I whispered.
"G'Night, Sweets," Ash whispered.
A week later there was a knock at the door and my heart sank. As I braced myself for the police to be on the other side, I opened the door.
A UPS man was standing there with a box, "Leigh Burdett," he asked.
I nodded.
"I have a package for you from Portland, Maine."
I signed for the package and raced inside to open it. The note on top gave it all away...
'Mama, I saw these and thought of you. I miss you!! Me.'
I dug into the newspaper and found several packages wrapped in newspaper with notes taped on each. Every note had the date and time, where he was, and that he missed me; missed all of us. He even found little things for the kids.
For Charlie, Ash had picked up a tiny crystal angel. His note said they were in a truck stop they stopped at.
For Paul, he had found a game at a Mom and Pop resturant they had stopped for lunch at in New York.
Jonny got a new hat from a truck stop in New Jersey.
All told, the box had been more expensive to ship than to fill.
A week later, I received a single Blue Girl rose with a simple note that read, 'I miss you. A'.
