Chapter 60
Saturday - early evening
*******************
"We ought to get up, Davy. They’ll be wondering what’s happened to us," James said, looking up from his lover’s chest to gaze at his handsome face.
"Don’t wanna leave this bed, ever," David murmured, pulling James into a kiss.
"… and I don’t think anyone is going to be in any doubt what we’ve been up to," he added with a chuckle.
"Probably not, after all the noise you were making earlier," James agreed.
"Me? What about you?"
"Shit! I hope the children didn’t hear us," James added.
"I expect Mom kept them downstairs," David replied.
"But how would she know…?"
"Mom radar. She knew I’d been trying to get you all to myself all day."
"What are we going to tell them?"
David laughed.
"Don’t worry, not even Beth would dare ask for details…"
"No, Silly! I didn’t mean about what we’ve been doing… I meant what we talked about… before that…"
"We’ll tell them we’re gonna get married as soon as it’s legal," David began, "and, as soon as my divorce is final we’ll be holding a commitment ceremony."
"Are you sure you want to, Davy?"
"Get married or tell everyone?"
"Both."
"I couldn’t be surer, Baby. What does it take to convince you I’m in love with you and want to spend the rest of my life with you?"
"Maybe one more kiss," James pouted.
David didn’t disappoint him.
"I love you and I want the whole world to know we’re together…"
"I still can’t believe this is happening," James said. "Pinch me, Davy, so I know I’m not dreaming…"
***************
"Oh, there you are, Darling," Patti said as she looked up from the stove. "I was beginning to wonder if we were going to see you again today."
"Sorry, Mom, but James and I had a lot to talk about…"
"I’m sure you did, Darling…" she said with a grin. "Where’s James?"
"Oh, he got waylaid in the hall by Lizzie. I left them negotiating over which story he’s going to read to her tonight. He’d got his heart set on Sleeping Beauty but she claims that’s for wusses…"
"That sounds more like the sort of thing Davy would say…"
"That’s what I thought."
"If he asks again when her brother is out of earshot I think James might get a different answer," she added.
David nodded. She was probably right. Heck, when was Mom last wrong about anything?
"Is everything all right, Darling?" Patti asked.
She was studying him closely.
David was about to answer when James came into the room. David reached out to take James’ hand in his own and was pleased to find he didn’t shy away.
Patti started to smile.
David pulled James close and slipped an arm around his waist.
"It is now, Mom" David replied returning his mother’s smile.
Patti looked back and forth between them, her eyes bright with excitement.
"Well?" she said.
David glanced across at James and smiled encouragingly.
James held out his hand - the hand with the ring.
"It seems it wasn’t a joke after all," James said.
"This ring is just temporary," David added.
"You mean…?"
"Yes, Mom," David said.
"Ooo, you’re engaged! Oh, Darling, I’m so pleased for both of you… Come here. Let me hug you…"
Patti embraced them both, reaching up to kiss first David and then James on the cheek.
"What’s going on?" Bo asked as she appeared in the doorway.
David glanced over his shoulder and smiled at his sister.
"Ooo, Davy! You asked him?"
David nodded.
"And he said, ‘Yes’?"
David ginned at her.
"Oh, James, congratulations!" Bo shrieked, rushing to join in with the group hug. "You too are so made for each other…"
The back door opened and David looked up to see his father enter.
"Just thought I’d better check where everyone was… I’ve got the dogs outside…"
He started to smile and advanced toward the tableau. By the time he was within hugging range he was grinning from ear to ear.
"I don’t think I need ask…" Dave began.
David noticed a look pass between his parents.
"Congratulations, Son!" Dave said, extending one hand to David and clasping David’s elbow with the other.
The handshake turned into a manly hug.
"And, congratulations to you too, James!" he added, turning to James and giving him the same treatment. "I couldn’t be happier for you both…"
The back door opened again, just a few inches this time. Beth was peering around the edge of the door.
"Is it safe to come in?" she asked. "I’m freezing my socks off out here."
"Give us two minutes, Darling," Patti said. "David, why don’t you and James go and join Jon and the children in the den while we let the dogs in?"
David laughed as he realised James was already half way there.
"Hey, wait for me," he called, hurrying to catch up.
*******************
"You all look like you’ve just won the lottery," Beth said as she came in, accompanied by Bertha and Fritz.
Bo was pleased to see she had them both on the leash.
"What did I miss?" Beth asked.
"Are you gonna tell her or shall I?" Bo asked her mother.
"Oh, I think we should leave that to David, Darling," Patti replied.
"No need to say anything," Beth said. "I think I get the picture. So, what’s it gonna be for a wedding present this time, Dad? Matching cars … South Sea islands cruise… Down-payment on a house…?"
Bo watched as Beth scanned their parents’ faces for clues.
"The entire house?"
Patti and Dave glanced at one another.
"Oh, Dad! You can’t. That’s so not fair…"
Beth burst into tears and ran from the room.
"Beth!" Bo and Patti both called after her.
"Bo, Darling, would you mind seeing to the dogs? I should go after her…"
"Course not, Mom," Bo said, grabbing Fritz before he could make a dash for the hall.
*****************
"Uncle David!" Lizzie squealed jumping up to greet him as they entered the den. "Come and play with us."
"Hi there, Sweetheart," David said. "What are you playing?"
"Possession," Davy replied.
"Oh, I’m not sure I know that one…"
"It’s like snap," Jon started to explain, "but with a couple of variations…"
James watched as Jon caught David’s eye and they both smiled. Was there anyone in this house who hadn’t known what David was planning?
"Think you could explain the rules to me, Davy," David asked, moving to sit on the floor between his niece and nephew.
"It’s boring," Davy complained. "I don’t want to play anymore. Can I go upstairs now that Uncle James is awake?"
"Okay," Jon said closing the book he held in his lap, "but remember it’s an early night for you tonight. We have to be up early to get to the airport…"
Jon explained that the children had already eaten. It would be just the adults at dinner tonight.
David was sitting cross-legged facing Lizzie. They’d started to play… well, it was snap as far as James could tell. If there were any special rules they weren’t obvious. It didn’t look as though it was a game three could play so he looked around for something else to occupy him. His gaze fell on the newspaper lying on the coffee table.
"Is that today’s paper?" he asked, taking a seat on the couch next to Jon.
"Yeah, you wanna have a look?" Jon said, handing it to him. "Just local news though, I’m afraid."
James began to flick through the paper. Something on page 5 caught his eye. There was a two page spread about families getting together for the holidays. On one page, there were interviews with several members of the public: an unaccompanied minor - a young girl - being escorted off a plane by a flight attendant to be greeted by her father and step-mother; a thirty-something couple being reunited after working on opposite sides of the country for six months; an elderly couple travelling to spend the holidays with their niece and nephew; students travelling home to mom and dad. The opposite page was a montage of images - mainly photos taken at the local airport as far as James could tell from what he remembered of the terminal building.
Shit!
"Er, David," he said. "You might wanna take a look at this…"
"Puzz…esh…shun!" Lizzie squealed as David looked up to take the paper from him.
"Did you win, Poppet?" James asked.
She nodded and bounced to her feet.
"Well done."
"Do I get a cookie?" she asked.
Jon laughed.
"I don’t know if there are any left. You’ll have to go and ask Grandma," he said.
Jon leaned across to open the door for her and she hurried off to the kitchen.
*************
"What is it?" David asked, taking the paper from James. "Oh, shit!"
"What’s up?" Jon asked.
"Take a look at this," David said, handing him the paper. "Think ae’lle’ll recognise us?"
He pointed to the picture in the lower right corner of the page. It was of a couple kissing - two men kissing.
"Hmm, not sure," Jon said, as he studied the page. "I looked at that page earlier and didn’t spot it but now you’ve drawn my attention to it I have to say it’s unmistakably you and James…"
He laughed.
"I wouldn’t worry about it," he continued. "It’s only the local rag. No one in Hollywood’s ever gonna see it… But, would it really matter if they did? The rumour mill has it you’re about to go public anyway…"
"Mom’s been talking, huh?" David said.
Jon nodded "I "I had hoped we’d be the ones to break it to Joss and the cast though…"
"Madam’s gonna freak, whoever tells her," James said.
"Yeah, that’s true. Maybe it’d be easier if she found out this way…"
"I don’t wanna worry anyone," Jon began, " but if she’s likely to take it that badly aren’t you afraid for your jobs?"
Shit! David hadn’t thought of that. He was reasonably certain Joss would be okay with it. He wasn’t so sure about the network though.
"It’s her show," Jon pointed out. "Any idea how much influence she has?"
"Too much," David replied.
