Kelly chewed on her bottom lip.
Jessica laughed, "Now I know why Ashley always fussed about putting makeup on you."
Kelly frowned.
"Sorry."
"It's fine," Kelly closed her eyes as Jessica put eyeshadow on for her. "I just want tonight to be a happy night...no drama."
"No drama," Jessica agreed. "So...y'all's first date...you've got to be nervous..."
"Freaking out," Kelly admitted.
"Aw, don't worry," she smiled. "Y'all are going to have a blast. And plus, y'all are going to be in a gymnasium full of people, so it's not like you have to worry about all the normal details that go with a first date."
"Normal details?"
"Yea, like when to hold her hand...do you sit beside her or across from her...do you kiss her goodnight..."
"Well, we're kinda past the holding hand and kissing goodnight thing, but where do I sit?"
"Where do you feel most comfortable?"
"Next to her."
"Then you sit next to her."
"Ok," Kelly nodded before biting her bottom lip again.
"I can't put on lip gloss when you're doing that," Jessica pointed out.
Kelly laughed softly, releasing her lip.
"And if you get too nervous, I'm gonna be there with Boo, and Lyndsey's going, and..."
"Ashley's going."
"You knew?"
"Mary told me."
"And you're ok with that?"
"Mary's her friend too," she shrugged. "I have no problem with Mary getting all the support she deserves."
"You're a pretty cool kid, Clarkson, you know that?"
"Yea, well, right now all I care about is how I good I look, so..."
"You look great," Jessica assured, squeezing her shoulder gently before helping her off of the bathroom counter. "Now, why don't you go get dressed, and I'm going to call Boo real quick to make sure he's ready for me to pick him up, ok?"
"Ok," Kelly nodded, walking out of the bathroom and across the hall to her room.
++++++++
Kelly shifted, her sandals clicking together as she adjusted the sundress she was wearing.
"Well, don't you look beautiful," Jeanne smiled as she walked into the living room.
"You think so?" Kelly scrunched her nose, looking down.
"Absolutely," she nodded, kissing her daughter's forehead. "Did Jessica leave already?"
"Yea, she had to go across town to pick up Boo."
"And Carrie's coming pick you up?"
"Yes ma'am," her head popped up at a knock on the door. "That's probably her."
Jeanne walked across the living room, opening the door.
Carrie smiled as she walked inside, "Hey."
"Hey Carrie...well, don't you look very lovely tonight."
"Thank you," she laughed softly. She swallowed hard as she looked at Kelly from across the room.
The Texan gave a nervous smile.
"You ready to go?" Carrie asked gently.
She nodded, walking to her.
Carrie placed a light hand on her back, guiding her towards the door.
"So do y'all have any plans for after the concert?" Jeanne asked as she walked them out.
"Um, I'm not sure...we'll have to see what everyone wants to do," Kelly replied, her fingers twitching as the smell of Carrie's perfurme tickled her nose.
"Call me and let me know what y'all decide to do, ok?"
"Yes ma'am," Kelly nodded. "Night Mom."
"Night girls, y'all have fun...and tell Mary I said good luck."
"We will," Carrie smiled before Jeanne closed the door. She wrapped her arm around Kelly's waist, "Hey."
"Hey," Kelly smiled. "You look so beautiful."
She blushed slightly as she walked them to her car. She held the passenger side door open for her.
"Thank you," Kelly turned to her.
"You look..." Carrie finally let her eyes travel over the shorter girl. "Amazing."
"Yea? I wasn't quite sure about it..."
"No, seriously...it's perfect," Carrie nodded
Kelly smiled, letting Carrie help her into the car.
++++++++
Kelly looked out the window as Carrie drove to the school. She felt the other blonde's hand slowly sliding together with hers. She smiled as she turned to her.
"Are you nervous? About tonight?" Carrie asked, keeping her eyes firmly on the road as she held onto her hand.
"Yea," Kelly admitted with a light laugh.
"Ok good," Carrie let out a relieved breath. "Glad I'm not the only one."
"It's kind of silly if you think about it...I mean, we're way ahead of the first date stage."
"Yea, I know. It's silly. I mean, I was a little nervous when I was getting ready, but I don't think it really hit me until I saw you...you definitely know how to make a girl come down with a serious case of butterflies, did you know that?"
Kelly giggled, "Yea, well, I've been crazy nervous all afternoon. I had to call Jessica to come help me and calm me down a bit."
Carrie pulled the car onto a small side road.
"Where are we going?"
"Detour," she replied simply.
"For what?" Kelly asked as Carrie pulled the car into a turn around on the edge of a field. She parked the car, turning to her.
"I'm sorry, but I just have to kiss you right now."
Kelly felt her breath catch as Carrie leaned to her, one hand resting on her thigh while the other cradled her cheek as she captured her bottom lip in between both of her own. Kelly squeezed her arm gently as she kissed her back, her heart speeding up at how good Carrie's lips felt against her own, her face flushing as Carrie's hand rubbed her thigh slowly.
Carrie pulled back, her thumb stroking Kelly's cheek as she watched her eyes open. "I just really wanted to do that, and if I didn't, it was just going to be on my mind the whole time we're at the concert, and I wouldn't have been able to concentrate on anything else."
Kelly smiled, bringing a hand up and lightly running her fingertips over Carrie's lips.
Carrie kissed them softly.
"Well, I definitely won't be able to concentrate on anything else now," Kelly replied quietly.
"You know..." Carrie looked down to where her other hand was still resting on the Texan's thigh. "I understand if you want to do something with the group since it's Mary's last concert and all, but I wouldn't be totally opposed to just going back to my place after the concert...just you and me," she looked up at her nervously.
"I'd like that," Kelly nodded, biting her lip.
"Yea?"
"Yea," she gave a shy smile.
Carrie smiled in return, reaching up to kiss her forehead before settling back in her seat, moving the car out of park.
Kelly placed her hand on top of Carrie's that was on her thigh, keeping it there as Carrie drove the rest of the way to the gym.
+++++++++++++
"Oh wow, this looks great," Carrie smiled as they walked into the gym.
"Yea, they tend to go all out for these things," Kelly nodded, looking around. She saw Jessica and Boo already seated at a table with Lyndsey and Ashley. She smiled as Jessica gave her the thumbs up sign.
"What do we do?"
"Well, we can go ahead and serve ourselves before we sit, if you want," Kelly pointed towards the buffet that was spread out along the back of the gym.
Carrie nodded, frowning slightly as she followed her to the short line.
Kelly watched her out of the corner of her eye curiously as they walked down the buffet before making their way to an empty table along one of the walls, in one of the more quiet areas. "Everything ok?"
"Yea," Carrie nodded, offering a smile as Kelly held out her chair before her.
"You just got kinda quiet all of a sudden," Kelly noted, sitting next to her.
"This isn't exactly what I expected," she admitted.
"You just said it looked great."
"No, it does, it's just...there's a lot of people here that we know."
"Care, it's a band concert for school. What did you expect?"
"I don't know," she shrugged. "I guess I didn't really think about it."
"Are you...are you having second thoughts?"
"Maybe," she sighed. "Yea."
Kelly bit her bottom lip, standing.
"Where are you going?" Carrie asked, confused.
Kelly shook her head as she turned, walking away quickly.
++++++++
Kelly's head hung further at the sound of a familiar voice, shooing people away from the bathroom. She could hear the door locking and didn't bother looking up as the owner of the voice walked to her, standing before her as she sat on the bathroom counter.
"What happened?" Jessica asked gently.
Kelly shook her head, sniffing.
"Kellbell..." Jessica sighed, reaching up and wiping the tears from her cheeks. "What happened? Things seemed great when you two walked in."
"She's having second thoughts," Kelly replied shakily.
"About y'all?'
She nodded.
"What? Why?"
"I don't know. I guess being on a 'date' with all our schoolmates and stuff around us. I think it freaked her out a bit."
Jessica frowned, "Is she just scared of people finding out or what?"
"I don't know," she rubbed her eyes.
Jessica pulled her hands away. "You're going to get mascara everywhere," she explained, running her thumbs under her eyes carefully.
"What do you think it means?" Kelly looked at her nervously. "Do you think she wants to break up?"
Jessica watched as Kelly's eyes immediately started to well up again.
"I don't think...Jebbie I can't lose her. She promised...she promised she'd always be with me. She said she'd always love me."
"Sweetie, I'm sure she still loves you," Jessica smoothed a hand over her hair. "I mean, this is a bit much for her to get used to, you know."
"And it's not for me? It's not like I'm ready for anybody else to find out either, but that doesn't mean I'm second guessing this."
"Maybe you should just--" Jessica sighed at a knock on the door. "We're busy here!" she called back.
"It's me," came Carrie's soft reply.
Jessica turned to Kelly, "Maybe you should just talk to her."
"Is she ok?" Carrie asked through the door.
Kelly nodded.
Jessica walked to the door, unlocking it to let Carrie inside.
"What's wrong?" Carrie asked her softly.
"High schoolers," Jessica rolled her eyes as she walked out of the bathroom.
Carrie relocked the door before walking fully into the bathroom. "Baby, what's wrong?" she asked, hurrying to Kelly at the sight of tears falling from her cheeks.
"What?" Kelly looked up at her, her eyes full of hurt.
"I asked what's wrong?"
"Care, you told me you were having second thoughts about us...you can't expect me to take that with a smile," she sniffed.
"Wait...what? I never said..." Carrie's eyes opened wide in realization. She took Kelly's face in her hands, holding her gently. "Baby no...no, no, no, I never said I was having second thoughts about us."
"Yes, you did. I asked if you were having second thoughts and you said yes."
"I didn't think that's what you meant, though," Carrie shook her head. "I thought you meant the date because that I was having second thoughts about, but us? I have never had a single second thought about us, Kell, I swear to you."
"Promise?"
"Pinky promise," she smiled. "And I am so sorry that you thought that. No wonder you're upset."
"I thought when you said something about all the people...I thought that meant you were afraid of someone finding out and maybe you didn't want to do this anymore."
"Do what?"
"Us..."
"Baby..." Carrie kissed her forehead. "I love you so much. And I mean, am I ready for people to know? No, not at all, but that doesn't mean that I'm so against people finding out that I would break up with you. I don't care if they know about us...I just think it's easier for us to not have to deal with them right now. But I promise, people finding out will not make me even think about breaking up with you...not for one second. I'm far too selfish and I love you way too much to give a damn about everybody else."
Kelly let out a soft sob as she wrapped her arms around Carrie's neck, hugging her tightly, "I'm sorry."
"It's ok," Carrie soothed, rubbing her back.
"I love you too."
"I know," she assured. "And before you start second guessing that too, let me explain what I meant when I said I was having second thoughts about the date, ok?"
Kelly nodded, pulling back, wiping her eyes.
Carrie laughed softly, pulling her hands away. She rubbed her thumbs carefully under her eyes, "You're gonna get mascara everywhere."
"Jebbie said the same thing."
"Yea, well, listen to Jebbie. She's a smart girl when it comes to makeup."
Kelly smiled.
Carrie mirrored it, her fingers stroking her cheeks as they fell to rest in the Texan's lap, "When I said I was having second thoughts about the date, that didn't mean because I didn't want people to see us together. I just meant...I wanted our first date to be special, and it's not a very special first date when we can't act like a couple because we're surrounded by the entire school, you know? That's what I meant. This whole concert thing wasn't very thought out on my part. I just kinda jumped into it when I shouldn't have. It's our first date...I should've thought it out and made it something really romantic."
"The ride over here was romantic," Kelly pointed out.
"It was," Carrie agreed, feeling Kelly's hands slide together with her own. "It was really romantic, that's why when we got here I was a little bummed. You deserve better than this."
"I'm sorry I jumped to the wrong conclusion."
"It's ok. I'm sorry I suck at this date thing."
"You don't suck at it," Kelly laughed softly.
"What do you say...how about we postpone this first date thing?" Carrie suggested. "I want to do it right, and this...in a gym surrounded by a bunch of band nerds, eating cheap food...it isn't right. There were a couple empty chairs at Jebbie's table. How about we just go sit with them, and have a fun night, cheering on Mary, ok?"
"Ashley's sitting there."
"We don't have to talk to her," Carrie replied.
"What about...what about after?" Kelly looked at her nervously.
Carrie smiled, looking down at their linked hands. She ran her thumbs over Kelly's fingers, "I'd still like to hang out just the two of us if that's ok with you."
"It's ok with me," she replied softly.
"Yea?" Carrie looked back up at her.
"Yea," she smiled.
Carrie leaned forward, kissing her softly, "Love you."
"Love you too," her smile grew.
"So everything's ok now?"
"Everything's perfect," Kelly nodded as Carrie helped her off of the counter.
Carrie wrapped her arms around her, giving her a quick hug before pulling back, "Let's go see if we can get Mary to crack up in the middle of a song. I bet she'd get so pissed."
Kelly giggled, "Yea."
