Chapter 61
Sunday morning
******************
David was woken by the sound of laughter and shouting in the back yard. He glanced at the clock. It was only seven fifteen but he’d planned to be up early to say goodbye to the children. It was silly really, Bo and her family lived a lot closer than Mom and Dad but he rarely saw them in LA.
James was still sound asleep. David knew he’d want to see the children before they left but he’d let him sleep on a bit longer. Bo and Jon weren’t due to leave until around eight.
He got out of bed, pulled on a pair of sweatpants and went over to the window. As soon as he opened the drapes he could see what all the shouting had been about. The whole landscape was covered in a blanket of snow… and it was thick - at least six inches, David estimated. As he watched the children playing he noticed a few snow flakes drift past the window. It wasn’t over yet.
He slipped on a sweatshirt and a pair of moccasins and made his way downstairs.
****************
"The airport’s socked-in," David heard his dad say he reached the hall.
"Fuck!" Bo exclaimed.
"Darling!"
"Sorry, Mom, but I can’t afford to be late… I’ve got a big day coming up tomorrow."
The voices were coming from the kitchen.
"Hey!" David said to all present as he slipped unnoticed into the room.
He headed for the coffee pot and poured himself a cup.
They nodded as he passed by and mumbled their greetings as the discussion about the weather continued.
"Come and sit down, Darling," Patti said, ushering him to a chair.
"There’s more on the way," Dave was saying. "I don’t think anyone’s going anywhere today. You included, Son."
"I’ll make you an omelette."
"Thanks, Mom," David replied. "Is the airport closed then?"
"Yeah. Twenty minutes ago," Jon said. "It was on the news. The airport got it worse than we did… twelve inches already… and it’s drifting…"
"Shit!" David exclaimed.
"I couldn’t have put it better myself," Jon said. "I’m due to attend a board meeting at ten tomorrow…"
"I’m supposed to report to make-up at six," David said.
"… and I’ve got you-know-who coming to see me in the afternoon," Bo added.
David frowned and then remembered what she’d been telling him over dinner.
"Oh, right, the new Spielberg movie…"
"Well, you won’t be the only ones late for work," Dave said. "The whole of the Eastern seaboard is affected as far South as Baltimore and inland as far West as Chicago."
*****************
"Davy?" James murmured as David climbed back into bed beside him. "Is it time to get up?"
As David got comfble, ble, James pulled himself up to a sitting position.
"I haven’t missed them, have I?"
"It’s okay, Baby. No one’s gone yet…"
"What time is it?"
James reached for his watch.
"Shit! Why didn’t you wake me?"
"Don’t panic," David chuckled. "No one’s going anywhere today. The airport’s socked in."
"What?"
"It’s likely to be closed all day. There’s a snow storm headed this way… another one, that is."
James’ eyes widened in surprise and he leapt out of bed to look out of the window.
"Don’t let Bo catch you flashing the children," David called after him.
James grabbed a towel from the chair and wrapped it around his waist before pulling the drapes back to look outside.
"Wow!" he gasped. "I haven’t seen snow like that in years…"
"But didn’t you live in Seattle?"
"Yeah, but the city seldom gets much snow. You have to go up into the mountains to find it this deep… Look, they’re making a snowman… Come on, Davy, let’s go and help…"
David smiled. James was almost as excited as the children. It was good to see him this happy. Much as David had wanted to spend the morning in bed with his lover he knew he’d be spending the rest of his life with this man. He could wait… a few hours anyway.
*****************
As James showed Lizzie how to make a snow angel he was glad of the old sheepskin jacket Bo had lent him. It was a relic of her college days. Fortunately for him, she’d been a size or two larger back then. Dave had loaned him a pair of his own waterproof boots. With a pair of David’s thick socks they’d turned out to be a perfect fit. Needless to say, the gloves David had supplied were too big but that hadn’t hampered his style at all in the snowball fight Beth and Bo had started earlier. They’d declared it was to be girls against boys. The boys had sensibly allowed the girls to win and Patti and Bo had eventually returned to the house to make lunch. Of course, David couldn’t let it go and he was currently engaged in a rematch with Beth.
"Beth," David’s father called, "I could do with some help in the stable. Care to volunteer?"
Distracted by her father’s voice, Beth missed the snowball which David had just launched and it hit her smack on the forehead.
David collapsed in laughter.
Beth was readying to retaliate but before she could gather enough snow to make another missile her father had taken her by the arm and was leading her toward the barn. James had the distinct feeling Dave had an ulterior motive. He wondered what was up apart from the all too obvious on-going rivalry between David and his sister.
A squeal from Lizze caught James’ attention. He turned around to discover Davy throwing handfuls of snow at his sister. She just stood there, her arms folded in front of her face trying to protect herself. She looked to be on the verge of tears.
James dived at Davy and tackled him to the ground, saving Lizzie from another shower. Both Davy and James landed in a large snow drift.
"You okay, Davy?" James asked, concerned in case he’d been too rough on the boy.
"Hmph!"
Yeah, he was fine.
"Tee, hee," Lizzie shrieked. "Missed me."
She started to run toward the house.
"Can’t catch me!" she yelled as her brother struggled to his feet and ran after her.
James stood up and brushed himself off as best he could.
"Had enough?" David asked as he came over to help him.
"I guess so. No one to play with any more…" James complained. "Unless you wanna play with me?"
He grinned at David.
"I thought you’d never ask," he said as James found himself being grabbed around the waist and pulled into a kiss. "But how about we move this somewhere warmer?"
"I was thinking jacuzzi," James replied.
"Hmm, I like the sound of that…"
