Everyone froze utterly still.
“You’re joking.” Chester scoffed.
“How could you be Blue?” Joe asked incredulously.
“It’d a long story. But I was once Blue. Sixteen years back I was Blue.” Mike turned to the others, locking eyes with each of them before turning back to Leila who was standing on the spot with wide eyes.
“You’re Blue? But - how...?” Leila stammered, blinking stupidly.
“Well... You see... You know how I was abused... Everyday for fourteen years I put up with it. I dealt with it alone when you left, for eight long years. I never had the guts to leave, and no one ever knew. Then... I had enough. So I left. Sixteen years ago. I - I came to Kim and Lesley’s house, and they took me in.” Mike turned to look at Brad. “That’s why I always acted weird. There were situations I came across everyday in that school yard that freaked me out, reminding me of home. I never told anyone. No one ever knew anything. Lesley and Kim figured I was normal, but I was far from it. I’m still not okay. Not entirely. But now... Now everything’s sorting itself out.”
No one dared move, the shocked look on everyone’s faces made Mike blush so much that not even his darker skin could hide it.
“Then... All of that... Was a lie? You weren’t Kim and Lesley’s son? You aren’t a part Japanese?” Chester mumbled.
Mike shook his head.
“I’m part Japanese. That’s part of the reason why I left. I was considered a hybrid back then too.” Mike murmured sadly.
“They called you a wog.” Leila added.
“Exactly.” Mike nodded slightly.
“So - you lied to Kim and Lesley? You - you lied to us?” Brad stood up.
“No. I didn’t lie to them. I haven’t lied to you guys either - actually, I’ve probably been more truthful to you lot that anyone else. Everyone just believed I’ve always been with the Shinoda’s, and so we decided it would be best if we left it like that. They renamed me themselves. I never lied to anyone; I just kept the facts to a bare minimum. I didn’t want anyone to know because I was sure they would send me back.” Mike replied firmly.
Brad shook his head in bewilderment.
“Roses.” Leila murmured.
“What?” Mike looked at her sideways.
“Roses - back when we were little you always smelt of roses - I don’t know what you did back then to smell like that, but I always thought it was nice. Now you smell of roses again.” Leila laughed.
“I can’t believe it.” Mike shook his head with a smile. “You remember some trivial things don’t you?”
“It’s not easy to forget.” Leila grinned.
Everyone eventually calmed down and they all started good natured chatting, Mike and Leila talking to each other about where she had gone once welfare had taken her away.
~*~*~
It was a week on, deep in the night.
The little girl sat up in her bed, staring out her window into the streets of the little town of Tatum.
The dog outside was barking like mad, and her mum had been shouting at it to shut up - and yet the keyed up mutt was still carrying on.
“For god’s sake Becky pipe down!” Her mum shouted again.
The girl got up and woke her slightly older brother and together to two walked out of the house via the back door, creeping along to the next door neighbors where they threw little stones at a window.
A sleepy eyed kid peered out and then climbed through the window, following the first two to the next yard where they repeated their actions, waking the next three children.
It wasn’t long before they had gone through the entire township and rounded up all of the kids old enough to walk, and now they walked down the streets to the edge of the town, looking out towards the flat horizon, seeing nothing but the barren land of the desert.
“Look. The stars.” A boy with frizzy red hair pointed out towards the horizon.
All of the children followed his gaze.
The stars - as the boy had called them - were in a circle, far up in space, but they knew it was coming closer.
The funny beings the children had all seen in their dreams had told them of that.
“C’mon - let’s go!” A curly brown haired girl said, pulling her little blond haired brother along.
They all followed the girl, walking about five kilometers out of town, and there, they began building, laughing and screaming, getting covered from head to toe in dust while they carried stones, sticks and everything they could find into a great creation for the stars above.
