I wake with a start and stare at the ceiling, trying to work out where I am.
Oh yes, Chester’s house.
We all stayed over last night - including Leila - and even Joe would you believe.
He can be such an antisocial wanker sometimes.
My heart’s pounding, excitement is flowing freely through me - Rosie’s excited too and Haruku though as usual looks calm, but I know something’s up coz he’s smiling.
“They’re coming aren’t they?” I ask.
Rosie nods happily.
“Well what are we sitting here for - let’s go!”
“Let us wake the rest of the household then shall we mother?” Haruku asks.
“Oh yeah!” I jump up and run giddily around the house and begin rounding everyone up with Rosie and Haruku sneak outside.
“Guys - wake up! Wake up! C’mon hurry up!” I bang at the doors in the house.
“What...? God Mike it’s only one in the morning...” Phoenix yawns, with Lindsay close behind him.
“But we’ve got to go - now! Come on!” I insist.
“What’s the hurry?” Leila asks.
“We have to go - right now.” I reply shortly.
“Where to? Go where?” Joe mumbles sleepily.
“I’ll tell you later.” I say.
It takes a while, but eventually I get everyone out of bed, and then I get them all to troop out of Chester’s house and get in the car.
Samantha has a sleeping Draven bundled in her arms, and she’s none too happy about being woken up at such an ungodly hour.
“Where are we going?” She grumbles.
“You’ll see.” I sit at the wheel and make sure that everyone is in the car, then check that the trailer is firmly attached and that Rosie and Haruku are both there.
Haruku has grown up fast, and already looks like a teenager, ungainly - all arms and legs - and it’s only been a week since I pulled him out of Rob’s guts.
He’s sitting with Rosie in the back; now that he’s weaned he doesn’t mind being away from me.
I rev the car and speed off into the night, to the airport.
“So why are we here? What’s so special that makes you drag us out of bed like that?” Brad mumbles crabbily.
“I’ll tell you when we get there.” I repeat firmly as we trudge up the stairs into the private plane.
We all sit down in the plush seats, and I settle back, fidgeting, watching as Rosie comes aboard with Haruku close behind her.
Haruku looks at me through his glinting brown eyes, a smile on his slit like mouth.
“Guys, what’s the most awesome promise you could make?” I ask to divert attention, letting Haruku creep behind a spare seat.
“What do you mean?” Samantha asks - suddenly alert.
I swear she has psychic powers sometimes, but then again, I guess its just mother’s intuition.
“Just think about it.” I prompt.
We sit in silence for a while.
“I promise not to kill myself. That’s the most awesome promise I can think of.” Chester says after a while.
“I promise... Hmm...” Brad thinks about it. “I promise... That... No matter how crazy or bad the truth is, I’ll be loyal. Fuck that sounded lame.”
“I promise I won’t kill you - how does that sound?” Joe laughed.
I give him a withering look.
“You know Mike... Blue... Mike?” Nicola looks down at her hands.
“Call me Mike.” I remind her.
Ever since that day they found out I had once been Blue, they’ve been unsure of what to call me.
“Why do we have to do this?” She asks.
“Just do it.” I demand softly.
The other Blue’s been sitting in my mind, like a gloating monster, but since Haruku’s been around, Blue won’t dare take over - he just sits there in me instead, taunting me - calling me a hybrid and all of that.
Somehow Rosie managed to put my friends’ minds at ease, and they haven’t turned their backs on me, which I’m thankful for.
I have a son to look after, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have my down days.
Everyone goes through their idea of the perfect promise, and then silence falls on the plane again.
“Guys... Those awesome promises you made... You’ve got to think of them and keep them, because what I’m going to tell you... Will probably freak you out.” I take a deep breath and look out the window.
A city looms dark below me, but we’re not there yet, there’s still plenty of time.
Are you sure you want to do this Mike? There is still time to back out.
“No, it’s okay.” I reply aloud.
“Mike...” Brad says uneasily.
“There’s a lot more to the Blue Theboron than I told you.” I say at last, turn and look back at the falling faces. “Sixteen years ago when I ran away I was caught by one of The Ku Klux Klan. Back then there was none though, not that sect anyway. He was a psycho who had escaped the prisoner loony bin and had set up a hideout in a cottage out there. He caught me the night I was walking down that highway to Agoura. He tortured me - in the worst possible ways... When he was finished with me he took a knife and slashed my front end to pieces...” I take off my shirt, revealing the scars. My man tits had vanished when Haruku stopped nursing yesterday. “That day a little while back you probably saw them. But before that, that was why I never took off my shirt, the scars always hurt to touch, and I was self harming severely too. That dude was trying to bleed me to death. He dumped me in a coffin and buried me alive... I should have died, but someone saved me.” I stop to let all of this sink in.
“Who saved you?” Lindsay asks.
“Rosie. A friend of mine. But this is the part where you’re going to have huge trouble believing...” I look down at my lap.
“How? A girl happened to be in the right place at the right time and saved your ass - what’s hard to believe about that?” Joe scoffed.
“Everything Joe - just listen!” I snap.
Everyone watches me.
They look worried, some look disbelieving, some look grave.
“Rosie isn’t human.” I say dramatically.
There is a roll of murmurs and disbelieving voices.
“Rosie...” I turn to the empty side of the plane and motion for Rosie to come over.
“Rosie is a creature called a Jii’kujiiuu; she came to Earth a long time ago and was left behind by her ship by accident... Rosie, c’mon.” I look at her and she sighs audibly.
“Holy shit...” Joe gasps, jaw agape as Rosie reveals herself.
“Don’t worry, she won’t hurt you.” I reassure everyone.
Leila doesn’t look too surprised, which is good.
“Rosie has been with me since then, she kept me alive somehow and she’s been my best friend through everything. Because she’s invisible to everyone but me unless she returns to her normal colour, you probably can see why sometimes I acted really weird. Talking to myself and stuff. Rosie’s been with me all the time, on the bus, at home - wherever I go, she goes.” I explain.
“So that thing - has been on the same bus as us for - like - all the time?” Phoenix asks in disbelief.
“She’s not a thing!” I snap. “She is a she first of all - secondly her name is Rosie - and thirdly she knows more about everything than we do - her race has been around far longer than we can even imagine.” I take a deep breath and continue. “We hit rocks at Paris. Chester was there then, when I got sick. Things got out of control. You see, somewhere along the line I’ve been gaining something, and at that point we didn’t know what it was. So obviously I went way down hill. That was the first time I started having trouble with a split personality.” I look deliberately at Rob. “I called him Blue, because in a way that was who he was. He was my past. He used to make me the happy kid you know, always acting like a moron and smiling and all of that. But then he became evil. He made me do things I didn’t want to do, and that sent me mad. I kept winding up in hospital after that, mainly when Rosie wasn’t around. I needed Rosie around to keep me going, to stop Blue. It all went on like that, and he forced me to do something three times that I didn’t want to do, each time made me hate myself and him a hell of a lot more... The Ku Klux Klan found me then at this point when we were in New York, and they took Rosie away from me. They tortured me and this little girl - Bridget - just because we were ‘impure’ with our race. I’m part Japanese, Bridget was African American. All of this was taking me down and Blue was just getting worse and worse and I was beginning to gain powers of my own -” I’m cut off.
“Powers - whaddaya mean?” Rob asks.
“Telepathy. That’s how Rosie communicates, through a verbal language, but mostly through telepathy. She can do a little bit of empathy too, but not much. But you see, Rosie somehow gave those powers to me -” I’m cut off yet again.
“You mean she can read our thoughts?” Nicola stares at me.
“No. It doesn’t work like that.” I reply.
“Then how does it work?” She prompted.
“I’ll get to that later. Now, at that point I was getting all of these powers of my own - that’s how Joe flew across the room like he did. I gained telekinesis - hell knows how - because Rosie’s never done telekinesis before. All of that just kept growing and growing inside of me, and I somehow used it to call you guys. The cat used it too, and that’s why it seemed so human - I had been talking to it by telepathy. When I was taken to hospital I should have died. I don’t know why I didn’t. Something just kept me going somehow. I tried to kill myself so many times after that. I’d rip all the cords from the walls and all of that - I’d smash the glass using telekinesis - I’d do whatever I wanted to try and commit suicide. But Rosie... She always saved me. I had a scapegoat coming, and I had to be there for him...” I look down and stroke Rosie’s neck. “I got away from the hospital to go back to Rob’s place. I crashed there in his room for I don’t know how long. When I woke, my chest was killing me, and Rob was there. He was sick and probably dying. That was what the pot belly was all about.” I turn and look at Rob pointedly.
His mouth drops in shock.
“Are you saying that... My dream... That was - that was real?!” Rob spluttered.
“You were heavy with child, oh yeah. The scapegoat. The Freedom Bearer was making you sick because he couldn’t be pushed out. I had to cut him out before the pressure killed you and he died of suffocation. His name is Haruku.” I turn and Haruku stands up from his hiding place.
“No way - not another one...” Joe shakes his head and rubs his eyes.
“Haruku. Two thirds human, one third alien.” I murmur.
Haruku says nothing, he only smiles and hugs me tightly.
“I know this is all hard to swallow and you’re going to find this all very weird for a long time. But it all has sense, trust me. Rob... Say hello to your son.” I can’t help but smile slightly.
“No fucking way...” Chester shakes his head in utter disbelief.
“My... My... My - son?!” Rob stares. “What?!”
“Can you see the resemblance?” Haruku asks, his English is clear, gentle.
“Shit...” Brad shakes his head.
“I can. The eyebrows. But his eyes... His eyes are Mike’s.” Samantha says softly.
Everyone looks at Rob and back at Haruku.
“So... So if you two... Did that... For a start - two guys can’t have a kid - secondly - where did the one third alien come from?” Nicola asks.
“Do you really want me to get into details? Look, I’ve changed. Somehow I mutated. I’m still human, but I mutated. It made it all possible. That was why Rob was the ‘father’ kind of part in all of that. He was totally human, but my part then was part alien.” I mumble with embarrassment.
“No way...” Chester still can’t digest what he’s hearing.
“He human now.” Rosie says calmly. “Mutation only temporary.”
“Well that’s good. I know it’s hard to take in. But there’s a lot more out there. Rosie’s just a creature who’s way ahead of us, and she connected to a creature who wasn’t nearly ready for the worlds outside our reach. Humans aren’t ready for this stuff...” I say.
“That was why Blue took control then. He was to get mother past his fears of touch. Blue became so deadly then because he was more willing to do anything, and for what had to be done to release mother from the stars, it was going to break him. Mother was strong.” Haruku hugs me tightly. “But it still was a torture of its own. Mother was dying, he still is, because the longing he has for the stars and the confusion, not to mention the fact he cannot leave Earth - is destroying his heart. It is like homesickness a million fold stronger. That was why I was born, I was created to take his burden since I am of his blood, and leave Earth, to travel and live where mother cannot.”
Everyone sits in silence for a long while; Samantha is gently rocking Draven who is still fast asleep.
“But... Mike could leave Earth - if it really is that bad - what’s stopping him?” Leila asks, looking at Rosie.
Rosie points at Haruku who points at me.
“Because you guys are here. The best bunch of people I’ve ever known. Traveling the stars wouldn’t be worth it if I can’t be here with the rest of my species. The thought of leaving Earth is so scary... You can’t imagine how terrifying it is.” I reply as I put my shirt back on.
It was an experiment really. I was to be left on earth and connect to one human and test to see if they were ready for the stars. But there was an accident and I was left behind years before I was meant to. I have been on Earth for fifty seven years - twenty seven years before I was meant to be. I am old now; I have about another hundred years or so of life possible. All the time on this planet has taught me more than I ever could imagine, but I cannot die here, it would be dangerous for my race and everything in the stars for humans to find my body. I love Mike so much for his part in my life, and that is another reason why I cannot stay as it would endanger him should people find that he was connected to me. Now at last the ship has come back, it is coming to save us all. When Haruku and I leave this planet, Mike will be released from the stars - and even Blue to some extent, and then he will be free to live his life in a true form.
Rosie explains to us all in telepathy.
I sit in shock - along with everyone else - I was never told it had been an experiment... Perhaps I should be getting angry, but for some reason I don’t.
I look out the window to the ground and my heart jumps as I read the message scrawled on the earth below.
“We’re here.” I announce.
