Brad couldn’t believe his ears - or his eyes - all of this was insane - he had to be dreaming - he had to be... None of this could possibly be logical.
And yet, as he descended the stairs to the desert floor, he knew he wasn’t dreaming - there was the creature named Rosie - looking like a hairless gorilla cross dinosaur... And Haruku... The product of Mike and Rob... Plus, Brad believed - Rosie.
Rosie, Rob and Mike had merged to create this... This monster... But then, Brad could see at the same time, Haruku and Rosie weren’t monsters. Just creatures of another world.
But it still freaked him out.
“There. Look... Oh god she’s coming...” Mike breathed, looking up at the stars.
Everyone followed his gaze skywards - and held their breath.
A huge ship was slowly descending, landing only a little distance away from the plane, a colossal machine that dwarfed the plane time and times again.
Brad estimated it to be at least fifty eight meters long and twenty one meters tall.
They all walked towards it, in awe, coming closer to the magical thing before them.
Mike was the first to reach it, he touched the metal of its underside, smiling with a joy Brad hadn’t seen in a long time.
“Mike! Watch out!” Chester yelled suddenly.
Mike turned and put his finger to his lips, apparently not worried that vines had suddenly snaked out of the ships underside and were closing in.
The long tentacle like things reached under the emcee’s shirt and caressed him, others weaved themselves around his legs and under his crotch, lifting him up and lying him down in its tentacles, rocking him gently, like a baby.
Star Child... Is it really you?
Brad could hear the soft, loving voice as though it was really there.
“Yeah... It is... I’m here... I’m here...” Mike was almost crying out of joy now, he stroked the tentacles holding him and kissed one gently.
Another part of the ship unwove itself and those tentacles stretched forth - touching and caressing the other humans.
Brad jumped away from one of the tentacles reaching for him - and it pulled back likewise, before coming closer to him again, like a curious horse or mouse or something like that. This time he let it, and found its touch cool and gentle.
He patted it lightly and slapped it when it tried to go up his nose.
“Hey! No body snatching!” He barked.
The tentacle retreated in a way that seemed as though he had hurt its feelings.
“Don’t panic Brad - she’s friendly.” Leila reassured him.
She? How do they know that? Brad wondered.
Are these your fellow creatures? You friends Star Child?
“Yeah. They’re my friends.” Mike replied, caressing the tentacles lightly.
Suddenly the hatch opened with an audible rush of air and the steps moved down to the ground.
Rosie and Haruku stepped towards them.
“Mother!” Haruku called.
“Tpu mhĭ ndwo Tgare Psĭh.” Rosie said.
The ship responded obediently, gently returning Mike to the ground.
“Mother... It’s time for us to go. The ship can be detected by radar, and so we can’t stay long.” Haruku said.
“Right. I know...” Mike murmured.
He hugged Haruku tightly and they remained that way for a long while, neither wanting to let go.
At last Mike and Haruku parted, and Mike turned to Rosie.
He knelt down and so did Rosie, until the both where eye to eye.
“I’m gonna miss you Rosie... I’m gonna miss you loads...” Mike whispered.
Rosie purred softly and rubbed her neck against Mike’s, slowly at first, then a bit faster, slowing down again before stopping.
Mike shivered from the kiss.
“Ĭ lwlĭ saalw eb ehre. Nĭ ruo threa.” Rosie murmured.
“I know. Look after yourself okay? Don’t get stuck on anymore planets now.” Mike joked with a halfhearted smile.
Rosie chortled.
I intend to go back to my home planet and stay there.
“Hey Rosie... I’ve got just one question... I’m sure I’m twenty four... But go back sixteen years ago... And then that fact I was born in nineteen seventy seven... Ya know, that just doesn’t add up. I should be -” Mike was cut off.
Thirty years old, yes I know. The connections I believe have slowed the aging process right down... I do not know if you will age normally ever again, but since I have been here, all of your ages have been steadied out. None of you have really aged since you reached your early twenties. I believe humans adore looking young so I figure you won’t mind?
“Nah. I don’t think any of us would.” Mike smiled. “I guess there’s a lot we don’t know this connection had an effect on huh?”
That is correct. Very much so.
Rosie smiled.
“And... What about all of those times I almost died from blood loss... Why didn’t I die?” Mike asked in an even lower tone.
Rosie thought about it for a moment.
The ship kept you alive.
Knowing it was being talked about, the tentacles grew out of the underside and caressed both Rosie and Mike, Jii’kujiiuu and human, then withdrew again.
Within your veins you have traces of the ships ‘blood’ pulse. It was one of those other instances of the connection’s effects.
Mike paused a moment.
“Wow.” He said at last.
At that moment, another alien came down the steps, slowly, a more elderly version of Rosie, it turned its gaze from Mike, Haruku, to all of the humans standing a little way back.
He smiled by flicking his tail and ambled over to Mike, reaching out and placing an object in the human’s hand.
Mike gazed at it curiously, then looked back up at the new Jii’kujiiuu.
A gift. For if you ever change you mind. You are the Star Child that captured out hearts.
The male Jii’kujiiuu nodded and flicked his tail once more, then bowed his head and moved aside.
Everyone’s gaze turned back to the hatch of the ship, where yet another creature was descending, moving stiffly, an even less agile version of the last.
“Mike, Star Child, meet Captain.” Rosie also stepped aside, bowing her head with respect.
The female Jii’kujiiuu stood in front of Mike, she was old, long, deep lines were etched into her features and her eyes looked frosted, as though she could no longer really see through them.
“Star Child.” She murmured. “I am Hapchuek, Captain of this ship. We followed your progress and though the human race is still young, we see that some of your species can see far. I would like to offer wisdom to you, so you can help guide your race through its failures to better things... The question I ask however, is whether your counterparts over there would like to come and listen also.”
Mike seemed thoughtful for a moment.
“Yeah - sure. Guys! C’mon!” Mike turned and gestured for them to come closer.
Joe was the last one to walk up to the aliens - apparently he was still having trouble making out half of what was going on.
Everyone settled in front of the elderly Captain and watched as she settled down on her arthritic bones.
“I understand how the experiences you had before in your life can affect everything you believe and feel... Therefore some of my examples may be hard to follow. But listen for all of your sakes.” The space creature pleaded, her voice gentle and soothing as she preached her words. “Love each other, even those who deserve none, be kind to them.”
Joe snorted - he knew where this was heading and he already didn’t like it - it was just churchy crap.
Vines of the ship rolled around him and stroked him gently.
Just listen.
“Now do not fool yourselves into thinking that to be really loving is to be always smiling and laughing - that is not how it is. It is like when a child is born, the mother loves it beyond description and yet she or he does not go about smiling and laughing while cleaning up the mess the child has made. What the love is, is when you do something you may not want to do or enjoy doing, you do it nonetheless, because it betters the one you love.” Hapchuek said, turning her gaze to the guitarist. “Brad, you would have laid down your life for Mike that day. All of you would have - all of you fought to protect him, even Joe, who seems so selfish, has a heart. You took those hurting Mike down, not with the intent to kill, but to stop them from hurting Mike further and to stop them from murdering you all. True?”
Joe said nothing for a good while, but then nodded.
“Yeah. That’s true.” Joe said at last.
He hated admitting how much of a softy he was.
