Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know Gerard Butler. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Jade sat in the bath, watching Gerard walk toward her. Taking in his lean muscular body, she hadn’t even noticed the change, as they had grown old together. He had always been her beautiful stranger. A man she met by chance and then loved for the rest of her natural life she still loved him now this wasn’t life was it?
Closing her eyes she dropped her head below the water and floated below the surface, she could remember dying his face was the last thing she had seen he had kissed her hand and held her close, then nothing. Unsure of what had happened next, she only remembered a searing pain and found herself in Gerard arms earlier today, everything had flooded back, it was scary at first but she was in tears by the end of it. Their life had been wonderful. Bursting back above water, she smiled at him as he lifted one leg over the edge and lowered himself in, pulling a face at the temperature.
’Lobsters wouldn’t last in this’ he whined, carefully edging himself lower, trying to adjust his body to the temperature.
’I like a hot bath yes’ Jade smiled, leaning her head back and sighing, flicking one leg out of the water she kicked his chest softly. Gerard’s hand slipped and he fell side first into the bath, Jade screamed as the water flew everywhere and laughed as he rose from below the water, a look of thunder on his face he lunged for her, holding her against the side of the tub. His eyes twinkled as he broke into a smile and kissed her softly on the lips.
’We might as well have got a swimming pool in here’ he laughed, Jade nodded in agreement, this bath was large and deep but that was what she wanted. Reaching over she flicked on the bubbles and smiled as they rose to the surface, Gerard pushed himself backwards, and sat opposite her on one of the seats that were built in. Jade stared at him, mist was rising from the water and the candles were making her feel sleepy. Their excursions on the floor minutes before certainly had her longing for sleep. Standing, she walked over and sat on his lap, putting her legs either side of him, she lay on his chest and kissed his neck. Gerard held her tightly, stroking her curves under the water.
’I don’t want to leave you’ she whispered.
Gerard said nothing, inside he was crying out, this wasn’t fair. He would sell his soul for another lifetime with her, risk eternal damnation he didn’t care. Closing his eyes he half expected the devil to appear and grant him that wish, he wasn’t sure of anything anymore, this supernatural world was new to him and he didn’t like it.
Gerard lifted her chin and smiled, kissing her softly, he reached behind him and passed her a glass of wine, lifting his own to hers they clinked. ‘Heres looking at you kid’ he smiled, as they drank to each other. Placing their drinks back on the side, Gerard lay back as jade washed him down, closing his eyes he felt himself responding to her touch. So soft and light, each contact sending shivers up his spine. ‘Touch me jade’ he whispered. Jade stared at him and leaned over, blowing out a few of the candles a dark descended upon them , 2 candles kept the light around the tub. Jade ran her hand down his body and stroked his penis softly. Gerard didn’t take his eyes off her, she looked so beautiful but then she always did.
’Thank you for our life’ he smiled.
Jade felt tears creeping up her again, and blinked them back, smiling back she kissed him ‘I love you Gerard’ she whispered in his ear, moving her body down his she pushed his penis inside her and hummed in appreciation. Gerard lifted his body up further and pulled her chest against his, his arms held her against him, as they moved slowly together. Gerard kept his head firmly over her shoulder as he let his tears fall down his face. Jade hid her face in his shoulder against his neck, hoping he wouldn’t notice her tears as they dripped onto his chest.
’We are one again’ she laughed as they moved faster.
’We always were’ Gerard replied, thrusting her harder, they kept their soft rhythm and brought each other to a comfortable climax.
Gerard lifted her to the bed and lay her down, Jade fought sleep for awhile as he stroked her hair and kissed her back, but eventually she drifted off. Gerard glanced at his watch. It was 7pm. ‘two hours’ he spoke aloud, clasping his hands together he pulled on some clothes and walked downstairs, running his fingers along all of their belongings. Everything he had ever touched, everything he had ever valued and loved was under this roof. Save for the children. Leaning against the window he lit up another cigarette and smoked while staring at the stars. Staring into the garden he saw a shape move and opened the door. ‘Hello’ he called. Inside he knew it was ‘it’ the thing that had granted him this day. Checking the floor for slugs, he carefully stepped onto the cold concrete, jumping around until his bare feet got used to the temperature drop. Walking forward he avoided the slugs, laughing around he remembered when Jade had stepped on one barefoot and had screamed the place down. She had even started crying when he laughed at her, but he had taken her upstairs and washed her tiny feet, kissing each toe better he smiled as he pouted at him. Little things like that made life worth living, Jade knew how to make him smile and he knew hw to stop her feeling sad. They worked. They were a team. As he neared the pool he peered over the edge, the lights under the water gave it a glow. Sitting on the edge he rolled up his pants and dipped his legs over the edge. Still smoking he kicked his legs about in a childish way; he hadn’t done this for years, now seemed as good a time as any. Once more the black shape loomed behind him. Gerard didn’t turn around.
’Thank you for today’ he said, ‘it’s been hard, and it will be harder to let go, but I will never forget it’
’Your welcome Gerard’ the voice spoke back.
’Tell me something’ he pushed, ‘Will I find her again afterwards? I mean where do souls go? Will I see her anymore? What about my mother will I find her?’
’You will find your mother is always watching over you Gerard. She misses you’
Gerard heard the voice sob, and froze, his eyes flicked from side to side as he listened closely, peering into the water he stared at the shape. ‘Mum?’ he asked staring at it. Suddenly it vanished, Gerard spun around but nothing was there. ‘Mum?’ he shouted. ‘Don’t leave me’
’Never’ the voice whispered. Gerard felt a warm glow spread straight through his body, as the voice changed, it lost its hard unrecognisable edge, and became the welcoming tone of his mother.
’Mum, you gave me this day? Why?’ he asked looking all around him, ‘Where are you?’
’I am everywhere,’ she replied, ‘I have been watching over you in your old days, I am so proud of you my boy. Your love deserved a reward, a lot like when you were good at school and I gave you an extra cookie’
Gerard smiled, ‘Thank you mum.’ He felt invisible arms wrap around him and again a warm feeling spread over his body. Within a second she was gone, he knew he was alone once more, glancing at his watch he frowned. it was 8.30. Running back to the house, he closed the door and waited for his heart to return to normal, walking to the kitchen he set about making a hot chocolate and a coffee. Glancing at the side he saw a tub of melted ice cream, and grinned. ‘I’m not cleaning that up’ he smiled, safe in the knowledge that he would never have to. Tink jumped into the kitchen and stared in the corner of the room, she didn’t purr or meow as she usually did. Gerard stared at her, and walked toward her. Lifting a cup as he approached her. Tink cocked her head then hissed and ran away. Gerard pulled a face, hurt by the kitten out burst, turning to look out of the window he jumped. There was no one there, not even his own reflection from the light. Running to the hallway he looked in the mirror, nobody stared back. ‘Strange’ he spoke, ‘that had never happened before’. Heading back to the kitchen he made the drinks and walked upstairs. Placing them on the side, he kissed her softly. ‘Jade. honey. Wake up. Wake up.’
Jade groaned and made some muffled noises that Gerard thought was so cute he had to hug her tightly. Finally waking up she looked around; spotting the coffee she laughed and kissed him on the cheek. Drinking together they held hands an laughed, ‘Oh I forgot the biscuits, hang on’ Gerard smiled, running to fetch Jades favourites. When he reached the bottom of the stairs he stopped dead, there was a huge dog staring at him. ‘Callum?’ Gerard asked, it was the same Great Dane ha had owned, but it didn’t seem to recognise him. ‘When did you die?’ he asked. The dog backed away as Gerard walked forward then howled and ran into the other room. Gerard ran after it and stared around, there was no sign of a dog, he couldn’t even hear him. Shaking his head he walked into the kitchen and jumped as a shrill scream hit his ears.
turning quickly he saw Maggie, only she could see him. ‘Dad?’ she mouthed. Gerard’s mouth dropped open, blinking madly, he watched the room around him change, the wallpaper changed colour, the table moved around. More people came into focus. Nick was staring at him, as was Ben. All three were dressed in black, Maggie had certainly been crying.
’What’s going on?’ Gerard asked, stepping backwards in alarm. It all came back to him, Jade had redone the kitchen, the kitchen he had been living in all day was his memory. This was real, this was now. Once again Callum barked and ran round in circled, Nick dragged him outside. Maggie was shaking her head and hiding the side for balance, ‘Dad your dead. Your dead’ she cried. Gerard stared at her, then ran away, up the stairs he burst into the bedroom, relieved to see she was still there. ‘Something is happening,’ he spluttered, ‘the kids can see me, they saw me they are here’
Jade dropped her cup, ‘How are they here?’ she asked rising to her feet. Gerard looked at his watch, ‘Its 8.30’ he said, not really seeing that as an answer, but he felt like informing her anyway. Jade cried out in horror as all three children ran into the room, Maggie stared at her mother and father. Gerard sat on the bed staring at them, ‘Can they see us?’ he whispered. Tink ran in the room howling in anger and dived into Gerard’s arms, Gerard watched Callum bond in after her.
’Ben, is that the cat you saw the other day?’ Maggie asked, breaking the silence. Ben nodded, ‘I told you I wasn’t making it up’. Gerard gulped, Tink had died long before Ben was born.
’Dad, mum? Is it really you?’ Maggie asked, tears flooding her eyes, ‘What’s going on?’
’We don’t know!’ Jade cried, ‘We are here, you shouldn’t be’
’But your dead, I have to be seeing things’ Maggie cried, ‘If it weren’t for Nick and Ben I would have myself admitted right now’
Gerard stared at his hand, it tingled, he watched it slowly start to disappear. ‘Jade?’ he cried, Jade looked at her own body, it was starting to vanish as well.
’Children, we have to leave now’ Jade called, Kneeling up, ‘Look after yourselves, we love you, and are so proud of you’
Gerard knelt up as well and threw his arms around her, ‘No Ben you cannot lend 20 bucks’ he shouted, winking at his younger son who looked petrified. Tink meowed and dived in-between their legs, still glaring at the dopey dog that had been harassing her all day.
A white light filled the room, and all three children stepped back holding each other. Even Callum stopped chasing his own tail and watched the sight before him.
’I love you Jade butler’ Gerard whispered, holding her face in his hands.
’I love you too Gerard’ Jade cried, giving her lips to him for their last kiss. Hugging each other tightly, they waited for it to take them.
Maggie screamed as an unseen force knocked all three of them backwards, the light remained for a few seconds longer until darkness fell. Maggie scrambled up and flicked in the bedroom light, staring around her she smiled. ‘They are gone’ she said.
Nick pulled himself from the floor and stroked Callums head. ‘Trust them two’ he smiled, ‘I cant believe they were here and together.’
’Even in death’ Maggie whispered, ‘Nick they are still together’ she wept, but these tears were joyful, ‘they are up there or down there knowing those two, but they are together and safe’
Nick smiled and hugged Maggie to him, ‘At least we know dad wont go hungry’ he laughed.
Ben walked over and blinked, ‘Did that really happen?’
’Sure did’ Nick smiled, ‘Best keep it between us three though, I don’t want any of us being locked up, I’m sure this doesn’t happen every day’ he laughed.
’So where do you think Dad left his wallet?’ Ben asked as they left the room. Callum sat staring at the bed a little longer, then followed his masters out of the room.
A week later all three children plus most of New York all stood around as Gerard was laid in the same grave as Jade. Maggie held her brothers hands and smiled, her initial grief had left her since she saw them, now she wept because she missed them terribly. The day was bright and sunny, the birds sang and everyone threw roses as Gerard was lowered. Ben threw 20 bucks down and winked at the sky.
A few feet away, under the shade of a tree, Gerard leant. Jade stood in front of him, he hand wrapped in his. ‘Maggie knows I hate blue flowers’ he grumbled, watching his own body be lowered into the ground.
’Oh shut your moaning’ Jade whined. Smiling and kissing his cheek. ‘Are you sure they wont be able to see us again?’ she asked, checking to see if anyone was watching them.
’No, it was a glitch. Something to do with all the energy at play under one roof. God knows, but our day is over, we are gone. They can’t see us anymore. We are safe to return to the house, we wont be able to see them either, unless we want to. They might see Tink’ He laughed. ‘Come on when I said lets go and have a day out, I didn’t want to see my funeral’
’I am just checking they are ok’ Jade fussed, pushing his hands away, ‘Besides you owe me mister.’
Gerard rolled his eyes, ‘I didn’t mean to vanish after that kiss, I didn’t even know where I was’ he fumed. ‘I was in Star bucks when I returned, I thought it an ideal place to haunt. I came and found you straight after didn’t it? I cant believe you sub consciously decided to stalk a show shop’
’Well I wanted a quick look, I happened to be thinking about shoes as we transferred, I didn’t think I would end up there’
’Oh great, I am kissing you, I am kissing you goodbye after over 50 years of marriage and you are thinking about shoes’
’At least I wasn’t thinking about bloody coffee you freak’ she laughed. Gerard growled and lowered his head to kiss her.
’Well you found each other and me’ his mother shouted, suddenly appearing beside them, ‘Lord know why I was just enjoying eternal rest until you two appeared.’
Gerard smiled, pulling Jade toward him. They didn’t think of themselves as ghosts, nor did they intent to haunt anyone. Not that Gerard hadn’t tried, but he had discovered no one could see him. They could see other people if they changed levels. Gerard had stressed about the politics of being dead, but basically if he wanted to see his children he had to switch levels, back to the world he had just left. That is where all three of them stood now, watching the proceedings. Their new home was exactly the same as the place they had left, save for the people they had left behind. Tink lived with them, and they longed for the day that their children would join them in eternal bliss.
’Can we go and get a coffee?’ Gerard begged, ‘Mum you up for it?’
’No son, I am going to watch your funeral a bit longer, I’ll join you later’
‘your so morbid.’ He laughed, ‘ok well tell me who weeps the most. I will be dearly missed you know’ he laughed, then cried out as Jade poked him in the side.
‘You are one self centred little git’ Jade laughed, chasing him round and poking him. Margaret laughed hard at their antics.
’Watch it, I’ve only just been re born, I’ll not have you ruining my lovely new body’ he cried, grabbing her to him. ‘I’ll buy you a muffin if you desist.’ He said sternly.
’Deal’ Jade smiled, kissing him on the nose. Margaret smiled, watching them walk off hand in hand along the field. With each step they took they vanished a little more, their bodies nothing more than an outline as they turned to kiss each other before completely vanishing into their new world. Leaning against a tree, she stared at the spot they once stood, ‘Who said two people can’t spend an eternity together?’ she whispered.
