Kelly sighed in content as Carrie slid their hands together as soon as they got into her car after school.
"Long day?" Carrie smiled.
"I just wanna kiss you, that's it, that's all I want to do all day, every day. Sitting, standing, laying down, I don't give a shit...we could be in the middle of the road for all I care..."
Carrie laughed softly, running her thumb over her hand, "I know the feeling. Four more days."
"Can you believe it?"
"Not really," she pulled the car out onto the street.
"Do you think you're ready?"
"I think I'm ready to spend all those hours I've been spending confined in a crowded classroom, kissing you."
Kelly smiled, "Me too...I am gonna be picking up extra shifts at work though once school's out."
"I know," Carrie nodded. "I've already scoped out the places you work. They all have somewhere we can sneak off too during your break."
Kelly laughed, squeezing her hand.
"So speaking of, what's the chance we're going to get some good alone time sometime soon? I mean, your mom's not going to skip her morning tutoring every morning, right?" Carrie glanced at her hopefully.
"I have no clue," Kelly admitted.
"So she's ok with us being together...as long as we don't have a chance to be together?"
"I'm thinking of getting an apartment after graduation."
"Baby, I'm just joking," Carrie assured. "I think your mom's being really great, actually. I mean, she's letting me live with y'all. That's more than I could ever ask for."
"No, I know. I've been thinking about this for a while...before I met you, in fact."
"Yea?"
"Yea, I don't have enough money saved up yet for L.A., but I'm just so ready to move out. I mean, I love my parents and all, but..."
"Yea, you were definitely always an independent one. But spending money on rent for an apartment, wouldn't that make it take longer for you to have enough money to move out to L.A.?"
"A little, but I'll just work more to make up for it."
"You've really thought this out."
"I told you I've been thinking about it for a while," Kelly reminded with a smile.
Carrie nodded, her eyes focused on the road in front of them.
Kelly watched her curiously, "Care, you do know that I want you to move in with me, right? I mean, I can't afford much, so it's going to be a small, one bedroom apartment, but I still want you there with me."
"Yea?" Carrie smiled.
"Yea, of course; I thought that was a given," Kelly laughed softly.
"I just...I didn't know, and if you were moving out of your parents...I wasn't sure of where I was gonna go."
"You're gonna come with me," Kelly nodded surely. "I mean...that is, if you want."
"I want," Carrie replied quickly. "I really want."
Kelly giggled as Carrie kissed her hand, "Well, I'm glad that's settled."
Carrie grinned.
"What?"
"Nothing, just thinking about having our own apartment and all the surfaces we're gonna have to christen."
Kelly blushed.
Carrie laughed, kissing her hand again, "You're gonna let me help with rent, right?"
"I don't know, Care..."
"Kell, come on. That's what roommates do--they split the rent."
"Yea, but your dad is paying for all your stuff, and I don't know...it doesn't seem right for him to pay your rent too when you're not even talking to your parents."
"Then I'll get a job," Carrie shrugged. "And it's not like I'm not talking to my parents...just my mom."
"You've talked to your dad?"
"Not yet, but I will."
"I think you should soon. The more time you wait, the more time your mom has to talk her way into his head. You need to tell him the truth."
Carrie nodded, "Alright, I'll talk to him, if you let me pay half of the rent."
Kelly narrowed her eyes at her playfully, "Fine."
"Fine," Carrie replied, grinning.
"So what's the first place?" Kelly asked, curiously.
"Kitchen counter," Carrie nodded certainly as she pulled into the elementary school's parking lot.

Kelly knocked on the classroom door before entering with Carrie right behind her, "Hey."
"Hey girls," Jeanne smiled. "How was school?"
"It was good," Kelly nodded, walking to the back of the classroom, sitting backwards on one of the desks.
"So, Kelly, you will be working with the kindergarteners, and Carrie, you'll be with the third graders," Jeanne explained.
"Kindergarteners?" Kelly raised an eyebrow. "What in the world could a kindergartener need tutoring in?"
Jeanne rolled her eyes, "You know how parents are these days. Always worrying about every little thing. I swear some think that if their child isn't writing a ten page paper on Dickinson by the time they're in the first grade then there's something wrong with them."
Carrie giggled.
"But mostly, they're just going to be coloring, so here you go," Jeanne handed Kelly a stack of color sheets. "Try and behave. You know how much little kids love you...I think it has something to do with the fact that they view you as an equal."
"Thanks, Mom," Kelly laughed, rubbing her upper arm absentmindedly.
Jeanne's brow furrowed, "What's that?"
"What?" Kelly looked at her arm before quickly fixing her sleeve. "It's nothing."
Jeanne reached out, pushing her sleeve back up, "Kelly, what happened?"
"It's nothing, Mom," she shook her head, looking down at the bruise that wrapped around her arm where Carole's hand had been.
"Kelly, I mean it. You had better tell me what happened right now."
Kelly glanced at Carrie nervously.
Jeanne turned to her as well, "Carrie? Do you mind telling me what happened to my daughter?"
"I-It was my mom," Carrie admitted. "It's from when she walked in on us."
Jeanne's eyes darkened.
"Mom, I'm fine," Kelly insisted.
"Come on," Jeanne grabbed the back of her collar on her shirt, pulling her from the desk.
"Where are we going?" Kelly asked as her mom all but drug her out of the room and down the hall, Carrie quickly following.
Jeanne finally came to a stop in front of another classroom door as she continued to hold onto Kelly by her shirt. She knocked three times, mumbling angrily under her breath.
Carrie bit her lip, recognizing the room as her mother's. She took a step to the side, standing behind Jeanne.
The door opened, and Carole looked at them in surprise, "Jeanne."
"What is this?" Jeanne demanded, letting go of Kelly's collar and pushing up her sleeve. "Did you do this? Did you do this to my daughter?"
"If you would have seen what she was doing to my daughter--"
"I don't care what she was doing," Jeanne cut her off. "Nothing, I repeat nothing, gives you the right to lay your hands on my child, do you understand me?"
"Then why don't you tell your child to stay away from my daughter?"
"Kelly can hang around whomever she damn well pleases, and if I ever find out that you touched her again, I swear that you will live every single day for the rest of your life regretting it, do you understand me?"
Carole stood there, frozen.
Jeanne nodded, taking Kelly's elbow and leading her away.
"Carrie..." Carole began. "Wait..."
Carrie paused, her jaw set. All the things she wanted to say, all the names she wanted to call her mother but couldn't, rested on the tip of her tongue.
"Carrie, when are you going to get over this silly little rebellion phase and come home? These people...they're just going to drag you down with them."
Carrie's eyes turned icy, her body tensing. She felt a soft hand sliding into her own and turned to find Kelly standing by her side.
"Come on, Care. My mom said we're just gonna skip tutoring today. Let's go home," Kelly gave a soft smile.
Carrie looked to find Jeanne waiting for them patiently. She placed her other hand over Kelly's holding it securely, flinching at the sound of Carole slamming her classroom door closed.
"Are you ok?" Jeanne asked gently as they walked to her.
"Yes ma'am," Carrie nodded.
"Good," Jeanne patted her back comfortingly before looking across her at Kelly. "You...I don't want you anywhere near that woman ever again, do you understand me?"
"Yes ma'am," Kelly nodded, squeezing Carrie's hands as they walked out of the school.

Carrie watched curiously as Jeanne fussed over Kelly, rubbing an antibacterial ointment on the fingernail marks that remained on the back of her arm while she sat next to her at the small dining room table.
"I can't believe that woman," Jeanne mumbled. "I have half a mind to go back there--"
"Mom," Kelly laughed softly. "It's ok."
"This," Jeanne held her arm up. "Is never ok. Nobody has the right to lay their hands on you...that is never ok."
Kelly nodded, knowing better than to argue when she was in this type of mood.
"I'm really sorry, Mrs. Taylor," Carrie found herself apologizing for the tenth time.
"Once again, this is not your fault," Jeanne offered a soft smile.
Carrie nodded, feeling Kelly's fingers lace through her own.
Jeanne paused, watching them.
Kelly acted as if she didn't notice, "So does this mean we don't have to help out with tutoring anymore?"
"I thought you'd be excited to spend the afternoon coloring with kids your own size."
Kelly narrowed her eyes.
Jeanne laughed at her own joke as she walked to the back of the apartment to save the first aid kit.
"Your mom's pretty funny," Carrie squeezed Kelly's hand.
"She just thinks she is," Kelly rolled her eyes.
"I think she is."
"Yea, but you think I'm funny, so obviously your judgement isn't the best."
Carrie laughed softly.
Kelly smiled, bringing her hand to her lips and kissing it softly.
Carrie leaned to her, kissing her temple.
"I'm sorry my mom went off on your mom."
"I'm glad someone was able to," Carrie shrugged. "I definitely didn't do a good enough job the other day. I just...I freeze."
"You shouldn't let her affect you so much," Kelly's other hand soothed up her arm.
"Easier said than done," Carrie replied, resting her head on her shoulder.
Kelly turned, kissing the top of her head, quickly pulling back at the sound of footsteps approaching.
"And to answer your question," Jeanne continued the conversation from before. "No, you will not be helping out with after school tutoring."
Kelly smiled.
"You'll be helping out your father."
"For pay?"
"For the sheer enjoyment."
Kelly groaned, "What about Care? She's never done stuff like that...that's not safe for her to just be hanging out on a construction site."
"Carrie is more than welcome to stay here," Jeanne nodded. "She can start getting you two packed for Alaska."
Kelly's eyes lit up, "We still get to go?"
"Of course you get to go. It's your brother's wedding, and you made a commitment to help him. Plus, you are an adult, I couldn't very well stop you from going if you decided to."
"Thanks Mom," Kelly smiled, squeezing Carrie's hand excitedly.
Jeanne nodded, "Why don't you go get changed for work...I want to talk to Carrie for a second."
Kelly turned to Carrie nervously.
Carrie offered a smile, "Go ahead. You don't wanna be late."
Kelly nodded, dropping Carrie's hand as she scooted her chair back from the table before walking to the back of the apartment to her room.
"Do you always bake when you want to talk to Kelly?" Carrie asked curiously as Jeanne placed a plate of cookies in front of her.
"Desserts make her more relaxed," Jeanne smiled, pouring her a glass of milk. "She talks more when she's relaxed.
"You didn't bake anything yesterday," Carrie pointed out cautiously.
"I was in a sort of shock yesterday...making sure she was relaxed wasn't exactly top on my list of priorities."
Carrie nodded, "So what did you want to talk about?"
"If you plan on staying here, then you are going to need to go back to your house."
"Huh?"
"Clothes...you need those, right?"
Carrie laughed softly, "Yea, I do."
"And you're going to need to make sure you have enough warm clothes for the trip."
"Yes ma'am," Carrie nodded. "I can go when I drop off Kelly at work."
Jeanne frowned slightly.
"I'll go after I drop her off," Carrie assured. "My mom should still hopefully be at school."
"If you don't feel comfortable going by yourself, I would be glad to go with you, Carrie."
"Thank you, but it's ok. I'm fine by myself."
"Ok, but I want you to know that what I said to Kelly about nobody having the right to touch her like that...that goes for you too, ok? I don't care if she is your mother, she has no right to hurt you, alright?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Good," Jeanne smiled, patting her hand. "Now eat those cookies before I do because Lord knows that's the last thing I need to be doing."
Carrie giggled, taking a bite out of a cookie.
++++++++++
"You ok?" Kelly asked as Carrie drove her to work.
"Yea, why?" Carrie replied, not taking her eyes off the road.
"Your hand's all sweaty," Kelly pointed out, glancing down at their intertwined hands.
"Sorry," Carrie pulled her hand away, wiping it on her shorts.
Kelly reached out, taking it back in her own, making the other blonde smile softly, "What's on your mind? Was it what something my mom said?"
"Kinda."
"Care, if she said something to upset you--"
"No, no, it's not that," Carrie quickly assured at the sound of anger rising in the Texan's voice. "Your mom has been nothing but nice and respectful to me. She just pointed out that if I'm going to be staying at y'alls place and if I'm gonna be going to Alaska with you, then I need to go to my house and get some things like clothes and stuff."
"You want to go right now?"
"I promised her I'd wait until after I dropped you off."
"Care, no, I wanna go with you."
"I promised her."
"So?"
"So, your mom has been nothing but nice and respectful to me and there's a reason for that. It's because I've been respectful to her, and I don't want to mess that up. She's totally the type that you have to give respect to get it, and I love that. I haven't had that before, I mean, with my mom it's more of you have to give respect because I said so, and I don't owe you anything in return, you know?"
Kelly nodded.
"I just...I promised your mom, and I don't want to go back on that, and I...I agree with her. I don't want you there either."
"You shouldn't go by yourself--"
"If it makes you feel better, your mom offered to go with me."
"She did?" Kelly felt the corner of her lips tugging upwards into a smile.
"Yes, and it's not like we're gonna be staying at your parents' much longer. We leave for Alaska soon, and when we come back, we start looking for an apartment, so in the short time that we are there can you please not make me break my promises to her? She's taken me in when most would've thrown me out without a second thought--I owe her."
Kelly kissed the back of her hand, "I love you so much, you know that?"
"I love you too," Carrie extended her fingers, brushing them along her jaw.
"Can you just...Jebbie's working with me tonight, and I saved her number in your phone the other day, so can you let her know once you leave your house and she'll let me know that you're ok?"
"Of course," Carrie nodded as Kelly kissed her fingertips.
