"The only things I know are
Road signs and rock songs and lonely hotel rooms,
But still I need you here."

"So, how are you feeling?" Kelly asked, studying Alex's face as the small child sat up in bed.
"Good," she smiled.
"Good enough for a little trip?"
"We're going shopping?" Alex asked excitedly.
Kelly laughed, "Yea. I promised you a pair of shoes, so let's go, you gotta get ready."
"Shoes?" Carrie asked, watching as Alex hopped out of the bed, Kelly eyeing her cautiously.
"Yea, she's always said how she loves my shoes," Kelly explained. "So I promised her we can go pick up a pair."

"Come on," Alex urged, tugging on Kelly's hand as the two of them, along with Carrie and Jason and the doctor walked down the sidewalk to the small store where Kelly was taking them.
"Slow down munchkin," Kelly laughed. "You're going to wear yourself out."
"I'm fine," Alex countered.
"Ok, well how about this, you don't know where we're going."
Alex stopped, mid-stride.
"Told you so," Kelly smiled.
"Well, you walk too slow."
"You told me earlier that you couldn't keep up with me," Kelly reminded.
"Well, I changed my mind," Alex crossed her arms.
"Want a lift?" Kelly asked.
Alex immediately unfolded them, reaching up for her.
Kelly smiled, picking her up, and carrying her as they walked.
"So, where are we going?" Carrie asked.
"It's this amazing shoe store that I discovered when I was younger," Kelly explained. "It's where I bought my first pair of chucks."
"Let me guess, probably some little hole-in-the-wall place?"
"Well, yea, those are always the best."
"How much further?" Alex asked, her arms wrapped around Kelly's neck.
"It's right up ahead," Kelly assured her. "See...right here."
"Doesn't look, all that amazing," Alex scrunched her nose.
"You've gotta learn to stop judging things before you really know them," Kelly teased, poking her side and making her giggle as they walked into the store.
"Kelly," a man in his early fifties smiled as they walked in.
Both Alex and Carrie's eyes lit up at the sight of all the shoes lining the walls.
"Hey Joseph," Kelly shook his hand.
"I didn't think you were coming," he admitted.
"Yea, sorry we're a little late. Traffic was crazy getting here."
"No worries," he smiled. "Glad y'all could make it. This must be...Alex, right?"
"Yea, this is her," Kelly replied, smiling at the small girl in her arms. "You said, you just got some in?"
"Yea, right over here," he nodded. Kelly followed him, leaving Carrie to explore the store while Jason and the doctor stood around, looking lost. "You said a size three, right?"
"Yea," Kelly nodded, looking at Alex who nodded as well as she leaned over the counter, watching as the older man pulled out several boxes.
"So," Joseph announced. "We have pink, silver, red, plaid, black, striped, blue, you can pretty much take your pick."
"Which ones do you have?" Alex asked, looking at Kelly.
"Pretty much every color ever invented," Joseph laughed.
"Hey now," Kelly smiled. "I'm not there yet."
"What color was your first pair?" she questioned, studying the shoes before her.
"My first pair was silver, but that doesn't mean you have to--"
"I want the silver ones," Alex nodded, surely.
"Alex, you don't have to get them just because that's what I had. You should get the ones you want," Kelly said gently.
"But I want the silver ones."
"You sure?"
"Yea," she replied.
"Ok then," Kelly turned back to Jospeh. "We'll take the silver ones...and whatever else she's getting," she said motioning to Carrie who was already holding a couple boxes of shoes that the other worker in the small store had helped her with. "Just put it all on mine."
"Sure thing," he nodded.
Kelly turned, smiling as Carrie walked to her, three boxes of shoes in her arms, "Found anything good."
"I want to live here."
"Well, I did say Texas was the greatest state ever."
"No, here, in this store...it's heaven."
Kelly laughed, "Well, get a bag for those, and let's go. I think it's time for some ice cream, how's that sound?"
"Yea!" Alex cheered in her arms.
"Yea!" Kelly cheered back, brushing their noses together as they walked out the store.
"Kell..." she heard Carrie fussing as she walked out behind them. "You didn't have to do that, you know?"
"But I wanted to," Kelly replied.
"I could've paid for them myself."
"Well, no duh, you could've paid for them," Kelly laughed softly.
"Then why'd you do that?"
Kelly sighed, looking at Alex, "Hey, you want to walk with Jason for a bit?"
"Yea," she nodded, smiling as Kelly handed her off to her older brother before slowing down so she and Carrie could be out of earshot of them. "Think of it as a thank you," she shrugged.
"For what?"
"For being here this week. For coming with us, when I know damn well you had a full schedule. It's really meant a lot to Alex."
Carrie looked in front of them to where Alex had crawled on Jason's back and was giggling as he made horse noises, "Kell...I think we should talk about Alex."
"What about her? Is she ok? Did she tell you she wasn't feeling well?"
"No, it's not that," Carrie shook her head. "How about tonight?"
"Yea, sure," Kelly nodded.
"Just Alex?" Carrie asked, curiously after a moment of silence.
"Huh?"
"Me being here means a lot to just Alex?"
Kelly smiled, and Carrie felt her heart jump as she smiled back before they quickened their pace to catch up with the other three.

"So turn up
The corners of your lips.
Part them and feel my finger tips.
Trace the moment,
Fall forever."

"Ice cream!" Jason exclaimed as they all walked into the tiny ice cream shop.
"Ice cream!" Alex agreed.
"What flavor?"
"Chocolate, duh."
"Chocolate, duh," Carrie mocked from behind her.
Alex turned to her, giggling, holding an arm out.
Jason took Carrie's bags for her as she peeled Alex off of his back.
Carrie hugged her tightly, "So, you having fun so far, munchkin?"
"Yea," she beamed. "Texas is cool."
"Yea, it's pretty nice," Carrie agreed.
"And Kelly's house is like a castle," Alex said, her eyes wide. She lowered her voice to a whisper, so only Carrie could hear. "You think she's a princess?"
"I don't know," Carrie replied, trying not to laugh.
"Cause I watched the Princess Diaries with Jason last night--"
"Jason watched the Princess Diaries?"
"Yea, he said he loved it," Alex nodded before continuing. "And in the movie, there was this girl, who was a princess and didn't even know it. Maybe Kelly's a princess and doesn't know it yet. She looks like one sometimes when she comes visit the hospital and she's all dressed up from work."
"Maybe she is," Carrie nodded.
"You think we could go swimming in her pool?"
"I don't know, you'd have to ask her."
"Kelly!"
"Inside voice," Carrie reminded with a laugh.
"Kelly!" Alex whispered.
The short Texan walked over to them, a chocolate cone in one hand and a cup full of ice cream in the other. She handed the ice cream cone over to Alex who smiled.
"They only had one vegan friendly flavor," Kelly smiled apologetically, motioning to the cup in her hand. "It's vanilla, but I had them douse it in chocolate syrup then stir it up, so..."
Carrie laughed, "Thanks."
"You want to try it? Cause I don't want to go first."
"Sure," Carrie nodded, watching as Kelly scooped up a small bite with the plastic spoon. She opened her mouth, allowing the Texan to feed it to her while she held Alex in her arms. She smiled as the cold dessert slid down her throat. "That's good."
"You've got some," Kelly smiled, motioning to her bottom lip.
"Can you?" she asked, her voice wavering slightly.
Kelly nodded, reaching out, gently brushing her thumb across Carrie's bottom lip to wipe the spot of ice cream off. Carrie felt her heart speed up slightly, as Kelly's hand paused for the briefest of seconds.
"Can we go swimming in your pool tomorrow?" Alex asked, excitedly, breaking them out of their trances.
"Well..." Kelly turned to the doctor who had just joined them.
She nodded.
"Of course we can go swimming. Do you know how to swim?"
Alex shook her head, "Not really."
"Well, no worries. I have some little floaties that my nephew wears when he comes swimming at my house. I'm sure he won't mind if you borrow them."
"Cool beans," Alex smiled.
"Cool beans," Kelly nodded, taking a bite of the ice cream for herself. "Wow. That actually is pretty good."
"Told you," Carrie laughed as Jason got his cone and they walked out of the shop.
