Carrie couldn't help the sigh of relief that escaped her lips when she pulled into the driveway to find that her mother's car wasn't there. She climbed out of her own vehicle, making her way slowly up to the front door and unlocking it. She hurried up to her room, not wanting to take any chances. She walked into her closet, jumping up to reach the suitcase on the top shelf. She tugged it down, dragging it to the bathroom where she started to dump all of her stuff in there in the suitcase, laughing softly to herself as the memory of her mother's lessons on how to properly pack a suitcase ran through her mind. If only she could see her now.
Carrie froze, taking back that thought. That was the last thing she wanted--her mother seeing her now. She brought the suitcase back to her closet, throwing as much clothes as she could fit into it. She took a look around the room, hurrying about and grabbing the few things that she wanted to keep, stuffing them into her suitcase as well. She quickly zipped it up, looking back at the closet with a sigh. Over half of her wardrobe was still there. She made a quick decision, realizing that she wasn't planning on coming back.
Carrie hurried back down the stairs with the suitcase, throwing it carelessly into her trunk before hurrying back into her house and gathering as much of the rest of her clothes as possible in her arms. She ran back down, throwing them into the back of car before jogging back to the house one last time. She grabbed the rest of her clothes, making one more quick pass around the room to make sure she didn't forget anything. Her eyes narrowed at the pink ribbons that hung on the bathroom door. The vision of the ribbons going up in smoke as she tossed them into a bonfire played in her head, making her smile. She quickly shook it off, leaving the ribbons behind as she rushed down the stairs, two at a time.
"Carrie?"
She froze at the bottom of the stairs, turning around slowly.
"Care Bear?" her dad looked at her in confusion.
"Hey Dad," she smiled weakly.
"What's going on?"
"I just came to get the rest of my stuff," she explained, her stomach churning at the slight look of hurt in his eyes. "I'm gonna be staying with Kelly."
"I...I miss you."
"I miss you too," Carrie allowed, fighting with herself as the tears started to sting her eyes.
"I'm sorry..."
"It's ok."
"It's too late, isn't it?"
"No, Daddy," Carrie shifted the small pile of clothes to one arm as she walked to him, wrapping her other arm around him in a hug. "It's never too late."
"But you're not going to come back this time."
Carrie shook her head, unable to hold back the tears any longer as she pulled back, "I can't. I'm sorry."
"No," Stephen reached up, touching her cheek. "No, don't apologize. I should've...it's not your fault. Just...promise you'll call and let me know that you're alright?"
"I will," Carrie promised. "And maybe...maybe you can come visit? We can go out to eat or something?"
Stephen nodded, "I'd like that."
Carrie smiled.
"You love her," his hand moved down, squeezing her's gently.
"I do," Carrie nodded, more tears forming. "I love her so much."
"Then you love her right, ok? Make sure she knows how much she means to you. Make sure...take care of each other, you hear? Promise me you'll take care of each other?"
"I promise."
"She's a good girl...a great girl, and while it breaks my heart to lose you, I don't think I could've found a better person to lose you to if I tried."
"You're not losing me," Carrie argued. "I'll call."
Stephen smiled softly, patting her hand, "One day when you have kids of your own, you'll understand what I mean."
Carrie bit her lip, glancing nervously at the door.
"You should be heading back before..."
"It's too late now," Carrie swallowed at the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. She turned to her father, slightly desperate. "Why do you stay? You don't have to. You could leave right now. You don't have to deal with this."
"Care Bear, when you make mistakes, you have to deal with the consequences."
"Don't you think you've suffered enough? Your penance is served, Dad. You don't have to do this. You deserve to be happy just as much as the next person."
"Watching you grow up into this amazing woman standing before me...nothing could've made me happier than that."
"Yes, but I'm leaving now, there's no reason for you to stay anymore."
"Carrie..." Stephen sighed.
"Carrie?" Carole questioned as she walked in the front door. "Well, it's about time you came to your senses and realized that I was right about that girl. I'm just glad I was able to get through to you before it was too late."
Carrie stiffened as she stood up straighter, turning around to face her mother.
"What are you doing with your clothes?"
"I'm leaving...for good."
"No you most certainly are not," Carole replied firmly.
"There's nothing you can do to stop me," Carrie pointed out.
"Now you listen to me," Carole stepped to her, taking her arm. "You will march right back up to your room and hang those clothes up where they belong, and there will be no more of this talk about you leaving, do you understand me?"
"You have no control over me."
"Like hell I don't," Carole squeezed her arm.
Carrie jerked it away, her jaw twitching, "I'm not scared of you."
"I am your mother."
"So that means I should fear you?"
"That means you should respect me."
Carrie shook her head, turning back to her father. "Bye Daddy," she leaned down, kissing his forehead. "I love you."
"I love you too," he offered a smile.
"Carrie..." Carole warned, grabbing her arm once more as she started to walk away.
"Let her go," Stephen's calm voice demanded from behind them.
"Stay out of this," Carole replied.
"I said, let her go," his voice rose slightly.
Carrie pulled her arm back as Carole's grip lessened.
"Fine," Carole relented. "You want to go and ruin your life, go ahead...I won't stop you, but if you walk out that door, I don't want you to ever come back here, you understand?"
"Loud and clear," Carrie nodded, turning to go.
"Even when you finally open your eyes and recognize her for the no-good trash--"
"Bitch," Carrie felt her voice come out in a growl as she spun back to her mother.
"What did you say?"
"You heard me," Carrie replied through clenched teeth.
"Carrie," Stephen noted gently. "It's time for you to go."
She could feel her body starting to shake with anger.
"Just let it go, Care Bear...it's time to let it go."
Carrie took a deep breath before nodding in compliance.
"How about you head on out? I'm sure you have a lot of unpacking to do before you go pick up Kelly."
Carrie nodded again, taking a step back.
"And tell her I said hello, ok?"
Carrie smiled at the look on her mother's face. She made sure to take a mental picture, knowing it was something she'd never want to forget. "Yes sir," she replied before turning around and walking out the front door. She took in a slow breath, getting her heart to stop racing as she dumped the rest of her clothes in the back of her car. She pulled out her phone as she got into the driver's seat, quickly leaving a message for Jessica like she promised Kelly she would, unable to wipe the smile off her face as the look on her mother's face before she walked out played over and over in her mind while she backed out of the driveway.

Carrie walked into the small apartment with her suitcase in one hand and a pile of clothes in the other. She made her way back to Kelly's room dropping the clothes on the floor with a tired sigh, turning at the sound of a knock on the door.
"I warmed them in the microwave for you," Jeanne explained, her voice gentle as she offered a plate of cookies to her.
Carrie felt herself tearing up as she struggled to smile.
Jeanne placed the plate of cookies on Kelly's dresser before wrapping her arms around the young girl as she started to break down, "Shh...it's ok...you're ok...you're here now...everything's going to be just fine..."
+++++++++++++++
"Thanks, Lyndsey," Kelly waved as her friend dropped her off in front of the apartment complex. She yawned as she slowly made her way up to the second floor and into their apartment. "Hey Mom," she gave a tired smile.
"Hey, sweetie," Jeanne opened up the microwave, taking out the meal she had reheated for her. "Sit...eat."
Kelly nodded gratefully as she sat at the dining room table.
Jeanne placed the plate in front of her before kissing the top of her head, "How was work?"
"Long."
"Well, you didn't have to work a double," Jeanne pointed out.
"Mom..."
"I know, I know, you need a car," she rolled her eyes.
Kelly laughed softly, taking a bite of food, "This is really good."
"Well of course it is," Jeanne smiled, sitting across from her. "It was even better right after I cooked it."
"Point taken...so where's Carrie?" Kelly asked curiously. "I waited for her to come pick me up, but she never showed so I had Lyndsey bring me...wait, is she here? She went to her parents...did she come back?"
"Calm down," Jeanne instructed, her voice soft. "Of course she came back. She fell asleep about an hour ago, and I didn't want to wake her."
"Is she ok?"
"She will be. She's a tough young lady."
"She is," Kelly agreed, leaning back as inconspicuously as she could to glance down the hall.
"Eat your dinner. Lord knows you get cranky when you're hungry, and the last thing she needs is for you to be cranky, so eat first and go check on her after."
"I can go check on her?"
"Of course you can. I never said you couldn't talk to the girl."
"I know, but..."
"I know you aren't too fond of my rules, Kelly, but this is still my house. You don't like the rules, you don't have to live here. You're still planning on getting an apartment soon, right? Why not go ahead and get one now if that's what you want?"
"Mom, don't say that, you know I am extremely thankful to you for letting Carrie stay here...we both are."
"Do you think my rules are unfair?" Jeanne asked curiously.
"You want the teenage answer or the responsible answer?"
Jeanne chuckled.
"It's just hard," Kelly admitted. "I mean, she's right there, right down the hall, living in my home, but I can't help...I miss her..."
"Does it help any to know that it would be the same if she were a boy?" Jeanne asked.
"You keep saying that..."
"You don't believe me?" Jeanne raised an eyebrow. "Call your sister. The rule has always been that the door has to be open at all times when there is a boy in your room. You just never brought any boys over for me to have to enforce that rule."
"But Carrie's not a boy," Kelly tried.
"No, she's your girlfriend. Which in a sense is worse."
Kelly's eyebrows furrowed.
"Let me finish," Jeanne held up a hand. "It's worse in the same sense as if she were your boyfriend, meaning, she's not just a boy, or in this case, she's not just a girl. So, if the rule was upheld even it if it were just a boy or...friend, let's just say friend, ok?"
Kelly laughed softly.
"So if the rule stood even when it were just a friend, then you better believe it's going to stand when it's someone more than a friend."
Kelly nodded in understanding, "And if I said that I'm eighteen, and I'm an adult, therefore, I can do whatever I want?"
"Then I'd say that you can absolutely do whatever you want...in a home that you're paying for, but this is my house, Kelly, and--"
"I know, I know," Kelly cut her off before she got started.
"Do you understand where I'm coming from, though?"
"I do."
"I'm not happy that you're having sex, you know that."
Kelly nodded.
"But you do realize that that has nothing to do with the fact that it's because it's with Carrie, right? Girl, boy, either way I wouldn't be happy about it."
"I know."
"You're young."
Kelly sighed.
"You are," Jeanne insisted. "And this isn't how we raised you. We raised you to wait until you were married."
"You had to know how unrealistic that was."
"You didn't seem to think so not too long ago," Jeanne pointed out. "And even if it wasn't until marriage, we wanted you to wait to at least make sure that it was the one."
"How do you know she's not the one? I mean, other than the fact that you think I'm too young."
"I wasn't even going to go with the age thing this time."
"That's a first."
"Kelly." her mother scolded.
Kelly winced, "Sorry, I didn't mean that to come out so snarky. I'll behave."
Jeanne laughed, shaking her head, "Anyway, I was going to say that you haven't even known her for that long."
"Yes, I have. It's been like...almost four months?"
"And after knowing her for only four months, you are absolutely sure that she's the one?"
"Four months in my time is a lot longer than four months in your time."
"Hunny, I have no doubt that with the amount of energy you have, a minute in your time feels like a year to you."
Kelly smiled, "I'm not that bad."
"Even now you can't sit still," Jeanne pointed out as Kelly continued to shift in her chair, changing positions from sitting up straight to sitting on one leg to sitting on both legs. "But my point is, four months may seem like a really long time to you, but in reality, it's not...and actually, that's not even the point. I wasn't trying to persuade you out of it. You are old enough to make your own decisions about this topic, and I just have to pray that I taught you well enough that you'll make the right decisions."
"You don't think me sleeping with Carrie is making the right decision?"
"As a mother my first instinct is to say no and to say that you'll still be too young to be having sex when you're forty."
Kelly giggled.
"But you and I have always had an extremely open relationship and that is something that I value very, very much. And because of that, I've gotten to know you not only as my daughter, but also as a very beautiful, very intelligent young woman who is more than capable of taking care of herself and doing what is right. So...I guess I have to trust you on this."
"But you don't like it?"
"You're my baby," Jeanne reminded.
"Fair enough," Kelly nodded.
"But again, that wasn't the point I was trying to make."
"Then what was the point?"
"That even though I may not like that part of y'alls relationship, that doesn't mean I'm against y'alls relationship as a whole. I'm not blind. I can see how happy she makes you, and you know that's all I want...for you to be happy and safe. And I have to give Carrie credit--she tries to take care of you as best as she can. She's not quite there yet, but it's obvious that she's willing to do anything in order to make sure you're safe."
Kelly chewed on the corner of her bottom lip, as her eyes started to sting a little.
"She's such a good kid, too. It's a wonder how she turned out like she did with a mother like she has...but, what I'm trying to say is that I'm not out to try and make you and Carrie miserable. I'm not trying to keep you two apart or anything like that...I'm just trying to make sure that you're living the best life possible."
"And me dating Carrie...that falls under the category of living the best life possible?"
"As long as she continues to treat you well and make you happy, then yes, yes it does."
"But me having sex with Carrie..."
Jeanne frowned, "No sex before marriage under this roof."
"But if we were living here, but had sex elsewhere..."
Jeanne made a face, "Kelly, you have to be careful. I know this new and exciting and you feel things you've never felt before, but you still have to responsible. You can't just go around sleeping with her wherever you want."
"Because she's a girl?"
"No, because it isn't sanitary."
Kelly couldn't help but giggle.
"I'm serious," Jeanne insisted. "You may not have to worry about being safe in some ways, but that doesn't mean that you get to stop being safe in every way. And I may not enjoy the idea of my baby girl already having sex, but that doesn't mean I don't still want you to be careful. Promise me you'll be careful."
"I promise."
"And that you'll wash your hands...before and after."
"Mom..." Kelly fussed, feeling her cheeks burning.
"I mean it. Think of all the things you've touched throughout the day, do you want all those germs and bacteria getting inside of Ca--
"Mom, please, ok, I get it, just stop," Kelly begged, burying her face in her hands.
"So you'll be safe?"
"We'll be safe," Kelly promised.
"Do I need to have this talk with Carrie too?"
"No," Kelly replied quickly, looking up at her. "No, it's ok...I'll fill her in."
"Good," Jeanne nodded.
Kelly took a relieved breath as Jeanne stood, taking her now empty plate away from her, "So...was she sleeping hard the last time you checked?"
"She was out cold," Jeanne replied, taking the dishes to the sink. "You know...I'm starting to tutor before school again tomorrow..."
"You are?" Kelly asked, surprise.
"I am...maybe you should let Carrie sleep and just check on her in the morning..."
Kelly nodded, bringing her glass to add to the dishes, "That's probably a good idea."
"But Kelly..." Jeanne began, the warning evident.
"I know," Kelly assured with a sigh. "Not under your roof."
"You said you miss her," Jeanne noted as she started to wash the dishes. "When I say not under my roof, I mean sex, Kelly, not...I'm not banning you from being around her, or holding her hand...or kissing her."
"No?"
"Well, don't do it in front of your dad, but y'all are dating, so obviously y'all would want to show affection...I get that. I'd prefer not to watch my baby girl making out with someone, but when the two of you are hanging out, and you feel...the urge--"
"Mom..." Kelly blushed again.
"I'm just saying, I want you to know that it's ok. This entire family is affectionate. We raised you to be that way. It would be very wrong and very hypocritical of me to ask you to be any other way."
"Thank you," Kelly couldn't help but smile.
Jeanne shook her head, "I'm sorry if I made you think that it wasn't ok to begin with. That wasn't fair of me at all."
"No, it's ok," Kelly assured. "I just...thank you for being so amazing about all of this."
"Well, you make it easy," Jeanne rubbed her back.
"Love you, Mama," Kelly kissed her cheek.
"I love you too, sweetie," she smiled. "Now why don't you go take a shower and get ready for bed. It's really late, and you have school tomorrow."
"Yes ma'am," Kelly agreed, kissing her cheek once more before bouncing out of the kitchen.
Jeanne laughed softly as she turned back to the dishes, mumbling to herself, "Just like the energizer bunny, I swear..."
++++++++++
Kelly snuck into her bedroom, and climbed over Carrie to take her normal spot between her and the wall. She smiled as she leaned forward, pressing their lips together softly.
Carrie's arm immediately reached out, wrapping around her, "Please tell me this isn't another dream."
Kelly giggled, "You dream about me?"
Carrie nodded, her eyes opening, "Good morning, baby."
"Good morning," Kelly beamed.
"Where's your mom?"
"Tutoring."
"Oh yea?"
Kelly nodded.
Carrie pulled her closer, kissing her firmly.
"Mmm..." Kelly stroked her cheek, loving the feeling of her skin beneath her fingers again. She started to pull back when Carrie's lips started to move against hers quickly. "Hey..." she giggled when Carrie's lips found hers again. "Hey..." she pulled back again.
Carrie looked at her in confusion.
"I'm not a dream, I promise," Kelly smiled. "You can relax. I won't disappear."
Carrie laughed softly, feeling herself blush, "Sorry, I...I just missed you."
"I missed you too," Kelly nodded, scooting back to her.
"A lot?" Their noses brushed together.
"A lot," Kelly replied, tilting her head down and brushing their lips together.
Carrie moaned softly, holding her close.
"That really gets to you, huh?"
"Even superman has a weakness," Carrie defended, hearing the teasing tone in her voice.
"It's just a little kiss."
"That is in no way shape or form just a little kiss," Carrie insisted.
Kelly grinned.
"Yea, yea, I want you, you drive me crazy when you kiss me, yadda yadda," Carrie rolled her eyes, making her laugh. "It's not like I don't know your weakness."
"I don't have a weakness."
"Are you saying you're better than superman?" Carrie raised an eyebrow.
"Yes...yes I am."
"Hm...then it's ok if I do this," Carrie tilted her head down and grazed her lips against the Texan's neck.
Kelly took a deep breath, "I don't see why it wouldn't be."
Carrie slowly moved her lips across the Texan's neck as Kelly tilted her head back, giving her better access. She felt the shorter girl's body shift against her as she started to kiss her more heatedly, her teeth nipping at the side of her neck.
Kelly drew in a shaky breath before biting her bottom lip as Carrie's lips left her skin feeling as if it were on fire. She reached down, taking the other blonde's face in her hands, and pulled her up into a hungry kiss. She flipped her over on to her back and slid on top of her as she took her bottom lip in between her teeth, tugging almost roughly.
Carrie placed her hand on the base of Kelly's neck, holding her back. She felt herself smirking as Kelly struggled to catch her breath, "So..."
Kelly narrowed her eyes.
"How's it going superman?"
Kelly laughed softly, shaking her head, "Not fair."
"I think it's very fair. Now come here and let me hold you," Carrie replied, pulling her back down on top of her, sighing in satisfaction as Kelly wrapped her arms around her, hugging her tightly as she rested her head on her shoulder. "This feels so good," she whispered, kissing her forehead.
Kelly nodded in agreement as her heart started to slow down.
"So...I got the rest of my stuff from my parents' house yesterday."
"Yea, I heard you were upset when you got back."
"Why didn't you say something?"
"You were sleeping last night when I got in from work, and just now I wanted to make sure to get my kisses in before we headed down that road. I'm really very selfish."
Carrie laughed, kissing her forehead again, "Well, I am so glad you didn't say anything, then."
"So, I'm guessing things didn't go well?"
"Um, no, actually, looking back, things went very well. It was just a lot to deal with, you know?"
"What happened?"
"Well, my dad was there, so I got a chance to talk to him. He was so great. He said to tell you hi, and to make sure that we take care of each other, and that he loves me, and to make sure I call and keep in touch."
"That's great, Care."
"Yea, and my mom also showed up. She thought I was back there to stay, but I informed her otherwise, and said I was leaving for good. She tried to force me into staying, but I held my ground. I may have even told her off a little."
"Oh yea?"
"Yea, it would've been a lot but my dad stopped me and suggested that I just go...that's when he said to tell you hi."
"Oh, I bet your mother loved that," Kelly giggled.
"I now have a very fond memory of her--the look on her face was priceless."
"So how do you feel about it all?"
"Relieved," she nodded. "Very, very relieved that it's all over and that I don't have to deal with it again and also that I was able to talk to my dad to make sure things are still good between us."
"Good," Kelly gave her a squeeze. "I got some good news for you too."
"Yea?"
"Yea, I had a pretty big talk with my mom last night."
"About what?"
"Us, and our relationship. The short version, all the rules she set still remain as in the door stays open when we're in here, and no sex under her roof, which at least now I get where she's coming from and it's nothing against us or you, so I'm ok with that."
"No sex under her roof?"
"Yea."
"But sex anywhere else is fine?"
Kelly laughed softly, "That's what I said which then led to a lecture from my mother on being safe when we have sex and making sure we wash our hands before and after."
Carrie laughed loudly.
"Yea, laugh it up, just be thankful I saved you from having to have the very same discussion with her."
"Thank you, baby," Carrie smiled sweetly as she tilted her head down, kissing her softly on the lips.
Kelly giggled, "Yea, yea, anyway, the rules stay the same, but they aren't quite as strict as we originally interpreted."
"No?"
"No, my mom said that she understands that we are a couple and that we have feelings for each other so that means we have urges--her word, not mine--and she's ok with us, expressing our affection for one another."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning, I can be near you, and hug you, and touch you, and kiss you all I want."
Carrie smiled broadly, "Oh yea?"
"Yea, well...with the exception of when my dad's around, but he's always at work, so..."
"Kell, your mom is amazing."
"I think it has a lot to do with you."
"Because I'm so awesome?"
"No," she smiled. "Because she sees what's going on between you and your mom, and she doesn't want that happening between she and I."
"Yea, that makes sense too..."
"But your awesomeness does have something to do with it as well," Kelly allowed.
"Oh yea?"
"Yea, she said that this relationship is right as long as you keep caring about me as much as you do and as long as you keep making me happy as much as you do, so keep up the good work, All-star."
Carrie wrapped her arms tighter around her, "Have I told you yet today that I love you?"
"You know, I don't think you have..."
"What?" Carrie scoffed. "That should be a crime."
"It should," Kelly agreed.
Carrie smiled as she took Kelly's chin gently in her fingers and tilted her face up, "I love you."
"I love you too," Kelly kissed her.
Carrie pulled back, turning her head to look at the clock. "We have to get up," she sighed regretfully.
"Five more minutes," Kelly replied, snuggling into her neck.
"Five more minutes," Carrie nodded, rubbing her back.
"And I'll see if I can get my dad to let me leave early this afternoon, so we can hang out some more like this, then."
"I can't wait," Carrie replied, her hand slipping under the back of the Texan's tshirt as it soothed over her back.
Kelly nuzzled her neck, her hand balling up into a tiny fist near Carrie's other shoulder, part of Carrie's shirt tight in her grip.
"Don't you fall asleep on me, we said five minutes," Carrie giggled, softly.
"Make it ten."
"I'll give you an hour, and we'll just skip first period," Carrie offered, not ready to let go of her either.
Kelly nodded in agreement as she started to drift into sleep.
