"And I'm trying hard to figure out
Just how I ever did without
The warmth of your smile
The heart of a child
That's deep inside
Leaves me purified"

"Who's this little guy?" Carrie asked, picking up a rather worn looking teddy bear off the floor of the room where Alex was staying.
"That's Mr. Bear," Kelly replied, pulling the covers back on the bed and getting it ready while Dr. Lansing got Alex ready for bed and gave her her medicine in the bathroom.
"Well, of course," Carrie smiled, placing him by the pillow. "He looks like he's seen better days."
"He's actually Luke's," Kelly explained. "Or, he used to be when he was younger. Alex always liked him, and one day Luke decided he was too old for a teddy bear, so he gave it to Alex. He said it would take care of her when he wasn't there."
Carrie felt her heart melt, "Why can't grown ups be more like children?"
"Because they forget that life really isn't as complicated as they make it out to be," Kelly shrugged. "I mean, they have to dissect every little thing. They can't just do something cause they feel like it. There has to be a reason or a purpose. You know, kids run around chasing butterflies cause it's fun. Plain and simple. Adults run around because it's exercise and a chore and to be thin and fit in."
Carrie laughed softly.
"What?"
"Something tells me you still run around after butterflies."
"Well yea," Kelly grinned. "Those little buggers are fun to chase."
"Do me a favor?"
"Of course."
"Never forget that."
Kelly smiled, "Deal."
They both looked up as Alex wondered into the room, her eyes nearly closed.
"Careful Care, it's a munchkin zombie," Kelly teased, bending down to pick Alex up.
"Shut up," Alex mumbled, instinctively wrapping her arms around her.
"Where you think you're going?" Kelly asked, laying her down on the bed, having to peel her arms from around her neck. "It's bed time."
She mumbled something neither singers could make out.
Kelly laughed softly, bending down to kiss her forehead, "Sweet dreams munchkin, nothing else, ok?"
Carrie smiled as she stood besides Kelly, squeezing Alex's hand, "Night."
"Night," Alex replied softly, curling up into a tiny ball.

"You ok?" Carrie asked as they got comfortable in bed together.
"Yea," Kelly nodded, relaxing at the feeling of Carrie's arms holding her. "You wanted to talk about Alex?"
"Oh yea," Carrie nodded. "It's funny, cause something happened after I said that that made it all confusing as hell to me."
"Like what?"
"When we were at the jewelry store, Alex made a comment about her parents divorce."
"Yea, poor kid."
"And I asked if maybe she had talked about it with you because I knew you went through something similar, and she said yes."
"Yea, I've talked to her a couple times about it actually. I think it really helps to know that you aren't alone when you are in that situation. That was one of the hardest things for me, cause I mean, I was alone, you know? Jason and my sister weren't there."
"Which I totally get," Carrie replied. "But the thing is, on the way here, at the airport, I was talking to her about being sick, and I asked if she was scared. Of course she denied for a while until I finally got her to admit to it. But it was funny because she didn't want me to tell you that. She said she wants you to think she's strong like you because you aren't scared."
"I'm scared shitless."
"I know, but you don't let her see that, so she thinks that she has to be brave too. You need to talk to her...tell her it's ok to be scared."
"But...I thought I had to be strong for her. You even said that yourself when you came to the hospital after we found out."
"I know, and I was wrong," Carrie replied, feeling Kelly's hand slip shakily into her own. "Do I have to have the talk with you before you have it with her?"
"Maybe," Kelly admitted, looking down.
Carrie brought a finger up under her chin, tilting her face back upwards so she could look at her, "Kell...it's okay to be scared. I've seen you around her. I know she means so much to you. The way your face lights up when you're with her is so incredibly sweet. Learning to let go of that is going to be hard. It is going to hurt. There's no way around it."
Kelly nodded, sniffing.
"But what you have to think about is what's going through Alex's mind right now. Kell, she's dying. And I wish there were a better way to put that, but there isn't. She knows she doesn't have that much time left. She's a smart kid. So, can you imagine what's that like? I mean, I hate to think about stuff like that now, and I'm 25. She's only 6. She's probably scared out of her mind, thinking about what's going to happen to her after. You need to talk to her."
"Ok," she replied softly.
"Kell, I honestly wish there were some way I could make this easier for you," Carrie confided. "I mean, I'm attached as heck to that little girl, and I've known her for what? A couple months? And it's killing me. So, I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through. I just...if there's anything I can do, just tell me...please?"
Kelly smiled sadly, touching her cheek gently, "There's not."
Carrie sighed, "Sorry."
"None of this is your fault, Care."
"Kel--"
"Just..." Kelly cut in, looking her in the eye. "Just be with me? Ok? That's all I can ask."
Carrie nodded, wrapping her arms around her tighter, hugging her closely as she kissed her shoulder before burying her face there.
Kelly rubbed soothing circles on her back, trying not to think about any of it too much. She turned, kissing her temple, "Let's get some sleep, ok?"

"Let's just lay here and be lazy,
Baby drive me crazy."

"Hey," Kelly heard Carrie's voice in her ear as she nuzzled her cheek, lazily.
She loved when she did that, "Hey."
Carrie wrapped her arms tighter around her, squeezing her gently, "I'm going take a shower in the guest bath down the hall."
"You can use my bathroom," Kelly replied, tilting her head slightly
"You go ahead," Carrie kissed her cheek, knowing that's what she was after.
"I'm going back to bed."
"No," she laughed softly. "Cause I know how you. As soon as I get up and leave, you're gonna get cold, so you're gonna want to get up too."
Kelly chuckled, "True. Ok, fine, I'll take my bathroom."
"Mmhmm," Carrie nodded, still resting against her cheek. "Just a few more minutes though. I forget how comfortable you are."

Kelly wondered down the hall. Carrie hadn't been in the spare bathroom. She had probably already made her way downstairs to the kitchen. She decided to check in on Alex to see if she was awake yet. She softly opened the door to her room, peeking in. Her heart melted as she saw both Carrie and Alex sitting Indian style on the floor with what seemed to be a pile of change between them as they talked quietly. She closed the door back, leaving them be.
"So, there's four quarters in a dollar right?" Alex asked, holding up the big coin.
"Yep," Carrie nodded. "Very good."
"And how many dimes again?"
"Ten."
"What about these?" she asked, holding up a nickel.
"There are twenty of those in a dollar."
Alex looked at her, slightly nervous, "O-okay. And what about pennies?"
"There are a hundred pennies in a dollar," Carrie explained, watching Alex's face pale. She tried to cover her giggle, "Why don't you do the quarters and dimes, and I'll count the nickels and pennies. How's that?"
"I think that's a good idea," Alex nodded.
Carrie laughed softly, "Good." She brought two fingers up to her temple, rubbing gently, trying to lessen the throbbing.
"You ok?" Alex asked, worriedly.
"Yea, just a headache."
"You know, I have medicine for that, if you want."
"It's fine," Carrie smiled gently.
"No, really. I have medicine for everything. I'm sure I have some that could make you fly if you wanted."
"It's fine," Carrie assured her. "I already took some."
"Ok," Alex shrugged, going back to counting the coins. "I wonder what you have to do to get your face on a coin."
Carrie smiled, "Well, usually you have to be some old white man."
"Or Sacajawea."
"Or Sacajawea," Carrie nodded.

"What's up munchkin?" Kelly asked, noticing that Alex was studying her carefully as they both sat in her room while she got caught up on her emails.
"I think Carrie's sick."
Kelly raised a concerned eyebrow, "Is she not feeling well? Where is she?"
"No, it was this morning," Alex shook her head. "When we were...doing something, she got a bad headache, but she said she was ok, but she really didn't look too good."
"I know," Kelly sighed. "I already told her once to go see a doctor cause she wasn't ever able to quite shake it off, whatever it is. She said she did, though, and she was on some medicine he gave her."
"I don't think it's working."
"It's not that," Kelly replied. "With our schedules, we never have time to really rest, so if you get sick, you're going to continue being sick until you get a few good weeks to yourself. I've been there, trust me."
"Do, you know what she has?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"I never asked," she shrugged.
"Why not?"
"Well, isn't going visit a doctor kind of personal?"
"She's your best friend," Alex pointed out. "You have the right to be personal."
"Ashley's my best friend," Kelly reminded.
Alex rolled her eyes, "You're allowed to have more than one best friend, you know."
