Chapter 6
A couple of months went by. I had begun my patrolling and met some nasty vampires, nothing I couldn’t handle though. However, my new career caused a great deal of bruises to miraculously appear on my body. And it was getting more and more difficult for me to hide them from my friends. I just hoped they wouldn’t read too much into them. Of course they did notice. They did start asking me questions. And I lied through my teeth, which that had become sort of a bad habit for me. It was getting easier and easier for me to just tell them one lie after another, and when I realized the ease with which I lied to them, I hated myself.
In the few months I had been fighting vampires, I had yet to meet the great leader, Nick. I had found out that he now went by that name, and not Nickolas. Of course I had met some of his followers, but unfortunately I had to kill them before they could tell me anything, besides, I wasn’t ready to face him. I kind of doubted I ever would be.
One night, after I had spent most of the evening with my friends, I once again made up some lie for my early departure from our night of watching movies. I was about to put on my jacket and head for the door, when Jess stopped me.
“ Angel wait!” she called out.
I turned around to face her,
“ Yeah?” I asked, not knowing what was coming next.
“ Listen we have to talk.” She said, a worried look on her face.
“ About what?” I asked trying to ignore the bad feeling I had about this.
“ About you…could you please just come back into the living room?”
“ Listen Jess, I really have to get going!” I said, trying in vain to avoid the conversation. I knew what it was about. I knew why they wanted to talk.
“ Why are you in such a hurry? You’re just going home aren’t you?” she asked. She knew I had lied, when I said I was tired, and wanted to go home and get some sleep.
“ Right…you’re right!” I said, “ I’m not in any hurry!”
I walked back into the living room where the others were and sat back down on the couch next to Howie.
“ So what is this? Why do you wanna talk about me?”
Howie looked at me,
“ Kevin is not your cousin is he?” he asked.
I was about to lie, and tell him that of course he was, when I saw the look in his eyes. A look that beckoned me to tell the truth.
“ No…he’s not.” I said, looking down at my hands.
“ So who is he?” AJ asked.
“ I can’t tell you.” I said truthfully.
“ Listen Angel, you better tell us!” Jess said, “ ‘cause ever since you met that guy, every time we’ve seen you, you’ve had bruises all over your body, you’ve run out on us at weird times and you…well we just don’t feel that we can trust you anymore!”
I felt the tears well up in my eyes. I had to tell them. I had to tell them everything. I couldn’t take it anymore.
“ Fine…” I said, “ I’ll tell you.” I paused and looked up at them. I could tell they were all anxious to hear what I had to say. So I continued,
“ Kevin…Kevin is my watcher.”
AJ looked at me,
“ Your watcher? What’s that mean? Like parole officer?”
“ No…It means he’s my helper, my assistant” I said.
“ Oh, and he helps you by beating you to a pulp now and then?” Howie asked shocked.
“ No!” I was crying now, “Kevin isn’t beating me!”
“ Then who is?” Jess asked.
“ You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” I said looking down at my hands again.
“ Try us!” AJ challenged.
“ Vampires” I said, waiting for their reaction.
“ What?” Jess asked incredulously.
“ Vampires, they beat me…vampires!” I said frustrated with the situation.
“ You were right!” Howie said standing up, “ We don’t believe you!”
“ It’s true!” I said standing up too, “ Mostly I beat them, but they beat me too, then I kill them!”
“ Jesus Angel!” Howie looked me in the eye. He was getting angry, “ Do you actually think we’re that stupid? That we’d fall for a story like that?”
“ You know what?” I asked, “If you don’t want to believe me, that’s fine, but at least let me try to prove it to you!”
This time AJ spoke,
“ And how are you gonna do that?” he asked. There wasn’t anger in his voice, just worry.
“ Look, just follow me!” I said grabbing my jacket, “ we’re going to Kevin’s place!”
They all followed me out the door, and we all filed into Howie’s car. Howie started up the engine and soon we were moving toward Kevin’s place. I was feeling very nervous. Kevin had told me not to tell my friends about what I was doing, and here I was bringing them all to his place, to show them what I was doing. I knew I was endangering them all, but I couldn’t stand lying to them anymore. If it meant I would have to die protecting them, then that was a sacrifice I was willing to make.
We soon pulled on to the street were Kevin lived. As we drove past building after building, I looked out the window, trying to hide the tears in my eyes. When we neared our destination I wiped my eyes with the sleeve of my shirt and said,
“ Just stop over there.” I pointed to the old warehouse.
Howie did as he was told and we all stepped out of the car. I started making my way to Kevin’s door when I suddenly noticed that no one was following me. I turned around and looked at them. They were all staring up at the old building in awe.
“ Are you coming?” I asked. I had put on my brave face again.
“ This is were he lives?” AJ asked in disbelief.
“ Yeah?” I said, wanting to know what he meant by that.
AJ looked at me and smirked,
“ Cool!” he said, and the mae made his way over to me. The others soon followed.
I knocked on Kevin’s door and waited for him to open. I heard some noises from inside and soon the distinct click of the door being unlocked. Before I could say anything Kevin said,
“ Angel! You’re late! Where the hell have you been?” He was angry. Suddenly he noticed my friends standing behind me, “ Oh…hey!”
“ Um…Kev…I sorta told them everything.” I said quietly.
“ Why? Angel you know how dangerous it is!” He asked. His tone had softened when he saw the sadness written all over my face.
“ Can we come in? Then I’ll tell you everything.” I asked.
Kevin opened the door fully and let us all in. He led us to the living room where we all sat down on the couch and chairs located in the room. Kevin looked at me,
“ So why did you tell them?” he asked silently. I was crying again,
“ Kevin, I’m sorry…I just…they started asking me questions about all the bruises, and I couldn’t stand lying to them anymore…I’m so sorry!” I said sobbing.
He leant down and put his arms around me and he whispered,
“ Shh…iokayokay Angel…it’s going to be okay…”
I nodded and dried my eyes. Kevin stood up to look at my friends, and then he asked,
“ So why did you all come here?”
“ Well…” Dani said, it was the first time she said anything, “ We didn’t believe her when she said she was a vampire slayer, so she wanted to prove it…”
“ Okay, well then follow me!” Kevin said motioning for them to follow him.
He took them into the gym and showed them all of the equipment we used for training, then he showed them into the office and he shoved them some of the files he had lying around on vampires. Jess noticed a picture and pointed to it,
“ Hey! I’ve seen that guy before!”
Kevin looked at her,
“ Where?”
“ At the club! You know, The Wave. He was there that night when you and Angel ditched us a couple of months back!”
“ He was?” Kevin asked, “ He’s Nick’s right hand!”
“ Wow…I never imag he he was a vampire!” Jess said surprised, “ I actually considered asking him to dance!”
“ It’s a good thing you didn’t!” I said. I had entered the room without any of them noticing, “ Or you probably would have been dead now…that guy is a vicious son of a bitch!”
They turned around to look at me, and AJ came over and put his arms around me. He pulled me into a hug.
“ Are you okay?” he asked. I nodded against his shoulder. “ I’m so sorry we didn’t believe you!”
“ I didn’t expect you too…” I said, “ I didn’t believe it when Kevin told me!”
“ So you forgive us?” Howie asked from across the room.
I pulled away from AJ to look at him,
“ Of course I do! Do you forgive me?” I asked looking at them with puppy-dog eyes.
They all laughed and came over to do a great big group hug. I know it seems kind of sappy, but at the time I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I was just happy that they didn’t hate me for not telling them my big secret sooner. We stayed in the group hug for a while until we heard Kevin clear his throat behind us. We all looked at him and erupted into a big ‘Aww’ and pulled him into the hug with us.
“ I’m sorry we left you out Kevin!” I said laughing.
“ Um…yeah, thanks, but that’s not why I cleared my voice!” He said, he sounded like he was uncomfortable in the big group hug, so I let him go. We all parted and I looked at Kevin,
“ Then why did you?” I asked.
“ Why did I what?” Kevin asked confused.
“ Clear your voice!” I said laughing at him.
“ Oh…yeah…because, in case you don’t remember, we have some work to do!” he said seriously.
“ Oh yeah…” I said rolling my eyes, “Another night of kicking vampire butts! Goody!”
“ Angel! I’m serious!” Kevin said.
“ I know, I know!” I said, “ Fine…I’ll just get going then!” I grabbed the backpack that was sitting next to the desk. It contained all the weapons I needed for patrolling. I looked at my friends and asked, “You guys can get home alright?”
“ Yeah…but now that we’re here, we mightwellwell just make ourselves useful!” Dani said, “ So if there’s anything we can do, just tell us!”
“ Okay…well, I guess you could help Kevin do some research about the big bad vampire master I’m after!” I looked at Kevin and he nodded, “ I mean…if you want to?”
“ Sure!” Jess said, jumping at the opportunity to spend some time with Kevin, “Where do we start?”
Kevin pulled out a pile of papers from a desk-drawer and said,
“ We start by reading all of this stuff through, to see if we can find any hints as to where he might be staying!”
“ Cool!” AJ said, “ This is like being a detective or something!”
I laughed at his enthusiasm and said,
“ Alright then, I’ll get going now! See ya!”
I walked out the door to Kevin’s place and started my way towards the park.
As I walked through the park all my senses were on alert. I had learned to trust my instincts through the months that had passed, and now it was no probat aat all to spot a vampire on the prowl. They always had a certain look in their eyes if they were looking for a victim. I met a few couples on my way, but nothing that caught my attention, so I finally, after having been all over the park, decided to sit down and rest my legs. I found a bench near a fountain and sat down. Thinking about how my friends had reacted to what I had revealed to them I smiled. They had been so great about this, and even offered to help, something I hadn’t expected. Actually I had expected them to run off as soon as they learned the truth, instead they were very supportive, even intrigued by my new profession. I knew there was a reason for them being my friends.
It was getting late, and I almost drifted off, when all of a sudden someone grabbed me from behind. Scolding myself for letting my guard down, I tried to pry off the fingers that had now closed around my neck. When that didn’t work, I knew I was dealing with a vampire, an unusually strong vampire. I was pulled, kicking and screaming, over the back of the bench and into some bushes. It was getting hard for me to breath, my throat closed under the hands of my attacker, and in one final attempt to free myself, I let go of the forceful hands around my neck, reached behind me and grabbed the head of my attacker. I struggled to get a good grip, and when I finally succeeded I bent forward and threw the assailant over my shoulder. Thinking I finally had the upper hand, I rushed toward him with a stake in one hand in an attempt to kill him. Then everything went black…
