Mine To Give – Chapter Six
“I need to see you!”
Natalie sighed inwardly at the excited, insistence in his voice. “Matt, it’s been such a long day and I’m dead on my feet!”
“I know and I understand, but this can’t wait!” Matt’s wide smile echoed over the line. “You’re going to love it!”
A glance at the clock revealed the lateness of the hour. 11pm. On the go since 5 a.m., all she wanted was to drop into bed, but it was obvious Matt wasn’t going to give up.
“Fine,” she sighed in defeat, “but you can’t stay long. I’m beat!”
“I’ll be right there!”
When the connection went dead Natalie walked over to the window and peered out. Matt was getting out of the car. She should’ve known. Had he followed her or been waiting for her to come home? Either choice bothered her.
The door opened before he could knock. Leaning over he kissed her soundly and grinned. Natalie scowled at him and restrained herself from dragging her hand across her mouth to wipe away his kiss. It almost repulsed her. That feeling seemed to be constant lately.
“Hi, honey,” Matt greeted, the way he’d done a thousand times before. “Miss me?”
Natalie’s stomach churned. Did he really forget what had happened the other day? How was she going to let him down gently? Every way she turned there was no easy way to tell him. So, she remained silent. He didn’t seem to notice.
“Well? Aren’t you the least bit curious? Aren’t you going to ask me what’s in the bag?”
“Bag?” She hadn’t seen it but now she did. It was a plastic white bag with the word Pemby’s Travels emblazoned across it in bold, black lettering. Confused, she looked at him and shook her head.
“What is it?”
“Ah! Now that’s more like it!” Matt crowed, dipping a hand in the bag. “Sit down.”
Natalie collapsed into a chair. A moment later a ticket jacket landed in her lap. A cold, hard lump settled in the pit of her stomach and she curled her lips in and bit them.
“What’s this?”
“I’ll give you a hint. It’s a trip.”
“No kidding.”
“Here’s another.” Matt rustled in the bag, retrieving a black cloth cap and setting it on top of his head.
“A yarmulke?” Natalie gasped. Matt smiled widely as she jerked open the ticket jacket to look at the destination. ‘You’re going to Israel?”
Matt rolled his eyes. “Not me, honey. Us! You and me! How many times have you said you wanted me to see it? Well, surprise! When shooting’s done, we’re on our way!”
Speechless, Natalie stared at the ticket wishing she could disappear. With each sentence she felt another nail slam into her coffin, sealing her away from life. Already it was getting hard to breathe. Flustered, she searched frantically for words.
“Matt, Israel’s not exactly a tourist haven…”
“Oh, that,” he waved her worry away. “There’s a ceasefire. It’s the perfect time to go! Three months and no problems. Tourists have headed back. You can introduce me to your relatives, show me Jerusalem…”
“No!” Natalie choked, halting his excited diatribe. “No,” she softly repeated. “I…I’m not going to Jerusalem.”
Matt stared at her, a cold yet fiery flame igniting in his belly. “What do you mean ‘no’? Of course you’re going!”
“No, Matt, I’m not…I’m sorry,” Natalie continued, her eyes sad. “And you also know that I have another movie to do right after this one!”
For a moment Matt floundered, his mouth working but no sounds emerging. Finally, a cold anger started to build. “You always wanted to go before,” he accused, feeling foolish and a little scared. “You said, ‘Oh, Matt, I want you to see it!’ You insisted!”
Shame scorched her cheeks and she hung her head. It was true. At one time. Now, she didn’t want to go anywhere with him. How could things have changed so quickly and so drastically? It was all so confusing!
Matt saw her indecision and plunged onward. “No Israel? Well, ok, we’ll go somewhere else. Hawaii? Rome? Aruba?”
Vehemently, Natalie shook her head but her words remained broken and quiet. “I have a movie to do! I’m not going anywhere with you, Matt. Not right now.”
The scales fell from her eyes as she realized how right Hayden had been. She needed to sort herself out and Hayden was giving her the time to do it. Matt must know she was unsure. Why wasn’t he giving her the same breathing room?
“What has gotten into you?” Matt’s eyes narrowed. He threw the bag on the floor and glared at her. When she wouldn’t look up he ground his teeth together. “It’s him, isn’t it? St. Christensen. Hero-at-large. Mr. Goody-goody.” Hands jammed on hips, he sneered. Natalie looked up not believing how mean and ugly he looked. “If he hadn’t barged in that day and given me another second I’d have had that guy! I was just ready to pounce when…”
“Stop it!” Natalie jumped up and paced away from him. “Just stop it, Matt!”
“But don’t you see? It’s hero worship!” Matt asserted, a desperation coloring his words, his eyes wide. “It’s like someone who falls in lwithwith their doctor! It’s not real!”
Natalie closed her eyes at his words. He was trying to confuse her even more, but she knew there was nothing made up about how she felt in Hayden’s arms. “I think you should go, Matt. I am too tired to deal with this right now.”
“Why? Is HE coming here? Has he been here already, taking advantage of you in a weak moment? You don’t need to play the grateful whore for him!”
A resounding crack rang out as Natalie’s hand connected with Matt’s cheek. Stunned, he gaped at her, his hand cradling his cheek, the realization at what he’d just said sinking in.
“Natalie! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean it! Honest! I would never think that of you!”
“I want you to go home,” Natalie managed through gritted teeth. “Not home here, home in New York.”
“But you’ll be here with him! That’s not fair!”
“He’s leaving,” she announced, the words shocking him. “Leaving. I won’t be seeing him for awhile, either.”
“But…that’s great! It will give you time to snap out of this! You were right to suggest it.”
“I didn’t. He did.”
That shut him up. Confused, he stared at her. “But…why?”
“He says I’m confused and can’t think straight with him around,” she explained, a heavy weariness filling her limbs. “He’s right. I can’t.”
“Then come with me to…”
“No.”
“Why not?” The words almost whined at her and she wondered what had attracted her to him in the first place.
“I need space to think. Go home.”
“No! Not until he’s gone, too.”
“Then stay until then in Australia but stay away from me.”
“You can’t be serious!”
“I am.”
“But I want to be with you. He couldn’t care half as much as I do or he wouldn’t suggest he leave!”
When did Matt lose his common sense? “Oh, really?”
“Yes!”
“Matt, please. Go away.”
Matt looked at her, his face white. “You won’t go to Israel with me?”
Natalie shook her head. “No, Matt. I’m sorry. And I don’t think you should go there, either.”
Fury replaced anguish, Matt’s face reddening. “Fine. Then I’ll take someone else.”
Immediately Natalie knew the intent of those words. “No, Matt, don’t.”
“Don’t what?” He made a face.
“Not Staci. You know she has a crush on you! Don’t drag her into this!”
“Who says I’m asking Staci?” Matt’s lips turned down. “I’ll take whomever I want.”
“Matt, please…”
“You’ll go?”
“No!”
Matt snatched up the bag and ticket. “Then it’s none of your business.” He stalked to the door. “I’ll talk to you after my trip. Maybe by then you’ll have come to your senses…or I’ll have come to mine.”
The door slammed shut just as the phone rang. In tears Natalie picked it up, her vision too blurred to read the number.
“Hello?”
“Hey…are you all right?”
Hayden. Tears burned in her throat as she fought back the desire to beg him to come over. He had promised he’d stay away but she knew he’d come in a heartbeat if she needed him. So, she swallowed the tears.
“I’m just so tired!”
“Yea, me too. It was a long day. I just wanted to make sure you were OK. I’ll let you go.”
“Hayden?”
“Hmm?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
The sound of his deep voice dried her tears, its effect calming. “For giving me time.”
Hayden snorted. “I just called you. That’s giving you time? I shouldn’t have even done that.”
“No, I’m glad you did. I’ll be able to sleep now that you have.” Natalie realized it was true as the words left her mouth.
“Oh. Well, that’s a good thing then.” She heard his smile. “Good night, Nat.”
“Night, Hayden. Sweet dreams.”
“You, too.”
Natalie set the phone down, no longer upset. Time would be her ally. She checked the locks on the door, then turned off the lights and went to bed where she slept soundly all night long on the side of the bed Hayden had claimed as his the night before.
With Matt gone, Natalie turned her efforts to her work with an intensity she’d never known before. Ewan watched her carefully, noticing the waning appetite and sidelong looks at Hayden when she thought no one else was looking.
“Hayden, she’s not eating,” Ewan sighed during lunch one day. The two observed her meager lunch choice as she made her way through the lunch line.
“You think I don’t know that?” Hayden breathed in frustration, toying with his salad. “If my food tastes like sawdust I’m sure hers tastes as bad. But I have to keep the stamina up for my workouts.” Hayden’s eyes drifted back to Natalie. As if she could feel his eyes on her she turned and met his stare. He crooked a finger and shoved the chair across from him away from the table with his foot. Silently, Ewan watched her unusually dutiful approach.
Natalie sat down and watched Hayden study the lack of food on her tray. A bowl of mixed fruit moved from his tray to hers. Stubbornly, Natalie opened her mouth to protest, caught Ewan’s piqued interest and closed it.
“A bird can’t live on what you’re eating,” Hayden’s deep voice accused.
“I’m fine,” Natalie emphasized, leaning forward to keep her voice from pitching to other tables.
“No, you’re not,” Hayden disagreed, his lips tightening at her annoyed scowl. “You’re losing weight, you’re pale, and you’ve got dark circles under your eyes from lack of sleep.”
“So do you,” she appraised his own haggard face.
“Don’t make me break my promise to you,” he warned, picking up her fork and spearing a slice of mango, holding it to her lips. For a moment, Natalie glared at him rebelliously.
“Come on, dearie, eat the nasty piece of fruit,” Ewan coaxed teasingly when a few pairs of eyes at a nearby table turned on them in curiosity.
A flicker in Ewan’s eyes commanded her to be careful, but Hayden’s stayed locked on hers uncaring of who saw. Obediently, she opened her mouth and accepted the succulent chunk, chewing and pulling a face at Ewan.
“There!” Ewan flung his arms wide in a comic flourish. “You’ve taken a step into the larger world of exotic fruits! Congratulations!”
Natalie rolled her eyes, but the onlookers at the table laughed at Ewan’s antics and went back to their conversation. Hayden speared another piece of fruit and continued to feed Natalie. He knew she was fuming but the public area afforded her no way out. So, she ate.
When the fruit was gone Hayden shoved a roll into her hand. “Eat it,” he commanded before she could get a word out, “or so help me I’ll make the biggest scene this place has ever known.”
Natalie’s eyes rounded at his fierce threat.
“Calm down,” Ewan soothed under his breath, “she’ll eat it.”
“What do you know?” Natalie’s brows drew together.
“I can see what other’s can’t,” Ewan answered, studying his lasagna, “but if you two don’t settle down everyone’s going to have a front row seat. You finish up today and Hayden and I are finished day after tomorrow. You go home, and we go on vacation. This is driving you both nuts! You’re not eating and he barely keeps down what he IS eating!” Guilty looks passed between Hayden and Natalie. “Just hang on a little longer. A couple months from now do yourselves a favor and get together and see how you feel. No matter how you think you might feel by then see each other and talk about it.”
Natalie threw herself onto the couch in her living room and groaned, grateful to be home after a long day’s work. Fortunately, the movie she was working on now was being filmed in New York City and she could retuome ome at the end of each day…and wonder where Hayden was…and what he was doing…and if he was thinking of her too…
“Good grief,” she muttered, disgusted with herself and her teenage angst attitude. This was ridiculous. She hated girls that acted like this and here she was mooning over someone like a love struck moron!
A self-deprecating smile tilted her lips as she spun herself to lie on the couch with her legs hooked over the back. Even now she could see hi he he came to kiss her goodbye almost four weeks ago. His hair had been all tousled from getting the long hairpieces taken out, the face freshly scrubbed, the full lips cocked in that infuriating half smile that seemed to always be hinting at some sort of secret he shared with her.
She had paced in her dressing room and ordered everyone to leave her alone so she could wait in her anxious silence. When the knock came she whirled to face the door, her heart pounding hard in her chest. Hayden walked in without waiting for her to answer. For a moment they just looked at one another before Hayden moved closer.
“I came to say goodbye,” he said, his eyes on hers. “The wrap party is tonight but there really won’t be a chance for me to say goodbye the way I want.”
A slight smile graced Natalie’s face, her brown eyes soft and dewy. “Then I’m glad you came to say goodbye now.”
Hayden gathered Natalie’s willing body close, his long fingers winding into her strands of hair, tugging her face to his. A smile lit his face as she smiled back at him.
“You know what?” Hayden teased, running a finger down her nose.
“What?”
“Even with those dark circles under your eyes you still have the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen.”
A flip of her heart, a curl of her toes, and his lips had kissed hers. Not one long, drawn out affair, but lots of little, soft caresses, the kind she had missed, the ones his lips knew how to do so well! They brushed hers, exploring the contours, remembering the shape and fit. Sometimes they nuzzled, parting hers just a bit as if he was going to deepen the kiss, then they retreated to the sensitive corners of her mouth.
A giggle purred in her throat at the remembrance. She had taught him how to do that when one day she had found that the left corner of his mouth was very sensitive to her kiss. It had been an innocent gesture. Well, she shrugged, it hadn’t been her intention to turn him on, but she had done it. The minute she’d backed up his eyes had given him away. They’d darkened and grown heavy-lidded and his chest had expanded on a tortured breath. Two minutes later they were on set and there was nothing he could do about it. Not a thing. And he couldn’t come to her apartment because he’d already promised her he wouldn’t. The power of the moment for her had been huge. And the constant dark looks thrown her way…she had squeezed her thighs together under her costume. Hayden caught her eyes…and grinned…wickedly…one eyebrow climbing as if he knew he could make her have an orgasm. He’d never said a word about it, but that goodbye kiss had played at the corners of her mouth reminding her of the sweet torture of unrequited passion.
Finally, his lips spread hers apart and his tongue had tasted her. Her ears had heard both their moans and then closed up as her senses honed in on the sensations sweeping through her. His heart had thudded impatiently against hers while his arms crushed her to him and her hands grabbed fistfuls of hair to keep him close as her lips grounded onto his.
Natalie’s eyes stared glassily at the ceiling. By the time they had parted both were breathing so heavy one would have thought they’d run a marathon. She had been stunned at the amount of passion hammering to get out of her and at him. The predatory stare of his hadn’t helped gain her any balance.
The phone rudely interrupted her reverie and Natalie huffed at the intrusion. Rolling off the couch she grabbed the phone.
“Hello?”
“Natalie, are you all right?”
“Mom?” Natalie cradled the phone, her eyes narrowing. “Yes, I’m fine. Why?”
“Then…you haven’t heard?” Natalie heard the deep concern in her mom’s voice.
“Heard what?”
“Oh, sweetie…” Her mother sighed.
A knot of fear pulled in her belly. “What’s wrong?”
“Turn on the news, sweetie.”
Shaky hands grabbed the remote and turned on the TV, punching in an all news channel. Eyes on the screen, Natalie sank onto the couch in slow motion, the pictures saying what she couldn’t hear from the reporter filing his report from the scene.
“Oh no….”
