Interlude Two:
"I'm Going to Marry That Man"
New York City
January, 2002
Faye sat at the bar, her fingers toying with the stem of her wine glass. Sidney had excused herself to the ladies room more than ten minutes ago and Faye was getting antsy. This was exactly the kind of place she hated- trendy, upper class, and full of yuppies. But Sid had promised they’d have fun and while Faye seriously doubted it, she knew Sid was sick of the house parties and hole-in-the-wall pubs that didn’t card that they frequented at school. They’d both turned 21 in the past month and this was their first trip back into the city since.
Sidney was, after all, the original rich chick. She grew up with money and lots of it. If she were a snob, though, Faye wouldn’t have touched her with a ten-foot pole. But Sid wasn’t a snob. Her dad was a self-made man and wanted his kids to be as well. While she’d gone to the best schools in Manhattan growing up, she was on her own her own for college. Which was how she ended up at Rutgers instead of Yale. Daddy wasn’t building any libraries if Sid couldn’t get in on her own steam.
Even still, Sid was used to the finer things but she never complained about Faye and Kat’s financial constraints. So when she begged Faye to come to this particular bar before the Bruce Springsteen concert- Faye couldn’t refuse. Especially when Sid said she’d buy. Once thing McKennas never did was turn down free drinks.
Five minutes later when Sid still had failed to reappear, Faye gulped down the last of her wine and set off on a rescue mission. Clearly, Sid had fallen in.
Before she got two steps away from the bar, Faye spotted her missing friend standing at a table near the back , talking to the two guys occupying it. Sid looked up and waved Faye over.
“Faye, this is Justin Sanders. We went to high school together.”
Faye smiled and shook Justin’s hand but was scarcely able to take her eyes off his companion.
“And this is a friend of his from Princeton- Dan Hamilton.”
“Faye,” he said, stretching out his hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Right back atcha,” she smiled, nervous as hell. They’d see right through her, she knew it. They’d know she didn’t belong in this place. The strange thing was, she’d never cared before.
“Why don’t you ladies join us?” Justin offered, throwing a knowing smile at Sidney. They both had taken note of their friends’ obvious interest in one another.
“Sure. Alright, Faye?” Sid grinned with a subtle poke to her friend’s ribs.
“Yeah,” Faye agreed as Danny got up and borrowed two unoccupied chairs from a neighboring table.
An hour later, Faye and Danny sat at the table alone. Sidney and Justin had spotted another familiar face from high school across the restaurant- Judy Carlson. Neither particularly wanted to catch up with Queen Judy of the Carlson Dynasty but it was the perfect excuse to leave their friends alone for a little while before the girls had to leave.
“You seem… uncomfortable?” Danny observed. “It’s not me, is it?”
“No,” Faye replied quickly, embarrassed. “It’s just… places like this aren’t really my scene.”
“Why not?”
“A little out of my tax bracket,” she said, certain he’d excuse himself after finding out she was a commoner, so to speak.
“Really? And I thought you were slumming it,” Danny teased.
Faye couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or flattering. She didn’t really care, though, as he was playing with the fingers of her right hand as he said it.
“I’m glad I met you,” he said, taking her completely by surprise.
“Ah,” she started, lamely, not quite knowing how to respond. “I’m glad I met you, too.”
“Faye!”
Faye was shaken out of the moment by Sidney calling from the bar as she made her way back over to the table.
“Oh shit,” Faye said looking at her watch. “I gotta go.”
“Apparently,” Danny grinned. As she stood up from her seat, he grabbed hold of her hand. “Listen, do you like karaoke?”
Faye, distracted by her hand in his, nodded dumbly, despite the fact that she hated karaoke more than having her teeth drilled.
“There’s this cheesy restaurant down in Princeton near campus that has karaoke in the bar on Wednesday nights. A bunch of us usually go every week in an effort to make Ivy League fools of ourselves. Maybe you could come down from New Brunswick- bring Sid.”
Faye was so completely mesmerized by his deep blue eyes and perfect smile that she would have agreed to a ritual flaying if he suggested it.
Moments later, Sidney practically had to carry her from the bar. He’d kissed her hand before she left, effectively turning her legs to Jell-O which made walking very difficult.
Sid laughed to herself as she stepped off the curb to jail down a cab.
Faye just stood there completely dazed by the whole encounter. He was perfect- funny, intelligent, handsome as hell. She would, of course, have to have Sid school her on how to interact in the world the Hamiltons dwelled in. She’d have to learn to fit in with people like him. She never believed that there was only one perfect person for everyone, but Danny was it for her. She knew it like she knew her own name.
“Faye!” Sid laughed, snapping her fingers in front of Faye’s face. “Taxi- c’mon.” Once in the cab, Sid nudged her, a wide grin plastered all over her face. “So??”
“I’m going to marry that man.”
