Chapter 7 - Surprises
Gerry - to his own surprise - had spontaneously followed Tamsin. Now he found himself at a loss for words once he had caught up with her. He opened his mouth and quickly closed it again. Why the heck had he actually followed her? Unable to answer this question to himself, he finally managed to come up with “Hey …ahh…I…can we just talk for a moment?”
’Oh brilliant’ he thought, not knowing what exactly it was he wanted to talk about.
When she simply stared back at him looking decidedly unmoved, he went on “Alright, I…ummm…realise that this is quite weird for both of us…but….since I assume neither one of us is a stalker…erm…you know…I guess we are adults…or…yeah…err”’ at this point he simply broke off as he didn’t have the slightest clue where he was trying to go with that.
Tamsin, still surprised about Gerry following her, now felt acutely confused “Look” she said taking over the speaking part “I don’t exactly know how it is possible that we met here by chance, but I am sorry. I…actually went to see the play with a friend…to take my mind off…you know…not that I was…I mean…it seemed like a good idea at the time…to do something…on a Sunday afternoon and all…” she trailed off.
Gerry could not help but start to smirk at the ridiculous conversation they were having, standing on the sidewalk of Sloane Square with people walking around them. A moment later a group of people was coming down the stairs and at the very front of them Tamsin spotted Terence.
She sighed and had a strong premonition that things would proceed to go downhill with her friend's help.
”Darling! Why the heck did you storm off like that?” Terence exclaimed and made a swooping motion towards her. But his attention was quickly sidetracked when he realised that Gerry was studying him with interest.
By now the rest of the group had also reached the sidewalk and someone directed his words to Gerry “Hey, there you are…” someone else broke in “Well, Gerry…if you had told me…I too would have rather been out here on a cosy one on one…” There was laughter and chatter within the group.
Gerry was less than happy about the development of the situation and now wished he had stayed put in the bar instead of running after her. Terence, Gerry and Tamsin were momentarily left alone and Gerry grinned apologetically at Tamsin who could not help but grin back as the comical character of the situation hit her.
Terence studied them both with interest and for once remained silent. Before she knew what had happened, she was pushed forwards in the midst of several people including Terence, who shoved her towards one of the black London cabs that had pulled up for them.
Tamsin protested, but the one guy who actually noticed only laughed her objections off and the taxis swallowed them all. She found herself sitting next to Terence and turned to him “Hey what the heck is that when it’s finished? I’m not going anywhere!” Terence grinned “Honey remember we have a dinner appointment?”
That was it, Tamsin decided and wanted to get out of the other door but found her way obstructed by Gerry, who was directed into the seat next to hers by Daniel, who had a firm hand on his shoulder. A moment later the taxi took off with the four of them wedged together.
Her anger and uneasiness evaporated somewhat when she felt Gerry’s warm leg pressed against hers and his bare arm against hers. She felt a tingling sensation as if electrified by the closeness to his body.
Gerry had felt uneasy once he had realised that she would come along for dinner. But then again she wasn’t exactly jumping happily at the prospect to accompany them. Somehow this took the edge off his uneasiness, since she was obviously not...pursuing... him, but on the other hand side this very fact was also confusing him.
Now that their denim clad legs were touching and he felt the soft skin of her arm oh his, it felt as if all of a sudden a lot of heat developed between their bodies. The closeness unfortunately also conjured up pictures from last night. Pictures of how her curvaceous body had writhed under his hands and body, a snapshot of the ecstatic expression on her face, how he had been buried deep inside her, how he had come so hard...
They were heading for Tom Aikens in South Kensington and Gerry felt grateful that his mind was kept somewhat busy by Daniel chatting away.
Nonetheless he also noticed that his breathing had quickened slightly. He was feeling a little aroused and glad to finally get out of the cab. At the same time he could not help but be disappointed when their bodies separated and the cool night air replaced the warmness of her skin.
The others were already waiting for them in front of the restaurant, some having a smoke. Gerry breathed a sigh of relief and checked his pockets for that half full pack of cigarettes. He quickly lit one, took a deep drag and immediately felt himself relax as he slowly exhaled the smoke.
Tamsin for most of the journey had been distracted by Terence who had left her no peace until she had hissed into his ear that Gerry was the guy she had told him about. She was close to killing Terence when he had let out a little squeal of delight upon receiving this unexpected piece of information.
Now she was staying close to Daniel and Terence as they entered the posh restaurant, for which she felt considerably underdressed. Terence soon took off into a different direction most likely to pursue his prey again. Tamsin sat down next to Daniel and someone suggested to order wine which was being served just as the smokers entered the room. Tamsin saw Gerry hesitate for a moment when he was motioned towards the empty seat at the far side of the table but after a quick glance at Tamsin proceeded to sit down.
Her other neighbour Mark, was a funny and intelligent conversationalist. She relaxed and they shared stories and found common interests. Notwithstanding this she could not suppress her urge to glance at Gerry every now and then. He was talking and laughing lively with a whole group of people. The next time she gave him a glance, Tam felt a jolt of surprise and excitement rush through her when her eyes met his.
He had been looking at her first and after flinching initially, Tamsin held Gerry’s gaze that seemed to suck her in and made all else blur. A moment later she hesitantly disrupted their visual connection that had made a swarm of flies buzz around in her stomach.
She shook off that feeling and hastily resumed her conversation with Mark. Yet she still watched out of the corner of her eye how Gerry, after they had all ordered their food, sneaked out for another fag. This time Daniel got up too and accompanied Gerry.
Tamsin excused herself and headed for the restroom. A look in the mirror reminded her of the fact that she had not put on much make up and she felt vulnerable without adequate evening attire.
When she stepped back into the dining room she smiled as she approached their long table from which chatter and laughter emitted, but then nearly stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Gerry in the seat next to hers. He looked up and this time it was him who looked away first.
As soon as Tam sat, she felt the presence of his body. Tamsin decided to buy some time and went straight in for a big sip of her Chardonnay. When she put her glass back onto the table she realised that Gerry had nothing but a glass of water in front of him and blurted out “you forgot to bring your glass of wine”. “Er…no I actually don’t drink” he replied.
Great. Another false start to their conversation thanks to her brain fart. She felt herself blush slightly and quickly muttered something resembling an apology into the general direction of Gerry.
A little later she could have kissed Mark. He as a third and neutral person had managed what she had deemed impossible… Mark, Gerry and she were actually having a good time. They were talking and laughing as if there had never been a problem in the first place.
But when the food arrived Gerry and Tamsin both realised that for the past few minutes they alone had been talking passionately about a controversial play both had watched recently. And both also realised that they truly enjoyed their time together now that the ice was broken.
Opposed to what they had come to believe, they easily found topics both were interested in and by the time the dessert arrived, they were caught up in a deep, half serious conversation about countries like Scotland, Wales and other places that would do just fine independently.
They sometimes touched each others arm or hand, every time only noticing after they had done it and hence tried not to do it again, afraid to send the wrong message. But then it became increasingly difficult to tell what the wrong message actually was. Had they both stopped for a moment to reflect on their becoming increasingly absorbed in their own world, they would have most likely been quite unsettled.
After the dessert Gerry fought the need to go outside to smoke yet another cigarette. But he felt himself become increasingly fidgety and before he knew what he was doing, turned to Tamsin “I really need a smoke, wanna come outside and get some fresh air? Well maybe not exactly fresh…it’s London and you’ll probably be choking on wads of cigarette smoke…ummm…but yeah…err” Tamsin laughed and retorted “how could I refuse such a tempting offer…” She cringed inside when the word “tempting” slipped over her lips which she regarded as a touchy subject in his company.
They got up and a moment later stood side by side outside staring at the decorative tree beside the door. When he had lit up, inhaled and exhaled for the first time he asked Tamsin “So you don’t smoke do ya?” “No” she replied “Well, only sometimes when I go out and get…er…no not regularly anyway” Tamsin grinned at him crookedly.
Gerry had only half listened as he had been distracted. The reason for his distraction looked on closer inspection like a small piece of chocolate from the dessert, sitting next to the corner of her mouth.
He automatically lifted up his arm to wipe it away, but stopped halfway and said hesitantly ‘You…erm…got a little bit of chocolate…here” he motioned vaguely at the place on his own face. Tam tried to wipe it away, but missed narrowly “Gone?” she asked with a frown. He laughed “‘Nope”, reached out, hesitated a little and then gently wiped it off with his index finger.
He then proceeded to look at his finger inquiringly with a wicked smile on his lips “It’s hard to say whether it’s part of that chocolate marquise…thingy, or a remainder of that lovely chocolate mousse. Well, there is only one way to find out” and with that he licked his finger with a mock serious expression “definitely chocolate mousse”
She was spared from having to come up with a witty reply, since Mark stepped through the door and joined them. He asked Gerry for a cig and then began asking him one question after another about some project. Tamsin excused herself after a moment and joined the others back at the table, where she got introduced to Aidan with whom she swapped the craziest holiday stories. This did not stop her from checking whether Gerry had returned yet. When he did he sat down at the other end of the table, but not without grinning at her.
Tam grinned back and immediately felt that weird buzzing sensation settle back in her stomach. Looking away, she determinedly put her focus back onto Andrew’s squid story from his last holiday in Greece.
The conversation around the table got more subdued as time went by and finally it was time to go. Three cabs were ordered to accommodate for the different routes and only then Tamsin realised that she had not seen Terence for a long time. That hot actor Terence fancied was also nowhere to be seen. Well that explained Terence’s absence she thought dryly.
She felt a hand rest lightly on her shoulder who belonged to Gerry who seemed to have taken over the lead in sorting people into the taxis. Her heart missed a beat when he announced that Mark, Andrew, Tamsin and he would go together, as they were heading into roughly the same direction. After a round of farewells, she found herself sitting next to Mark and felt slight disappointment at not sitting next to Gerry.
Andrew was the first to hop out of the cab after a few minutes. Mark was next and she felt unspecific excitement rise at the thought that she and Gerry would be alone soon. But when she came to think of it, insecurity and uneasiness started to creep back too. She would have given a lot to know what was going on in his head.
Now that Mark was about to leave, Gerry was less sure that his spontaneous ambition to buy some more time alone with Tamsin was what he really wanted. Yeah, their time together had been surprisingly good, but what was it he wanted? When the cab had stopped, he let Mark out and in a manly manner hugged his friend goodbye, patting his shoulder longer than necessary.
Back inside the cab he realised that he wished they would sit closer, remembering their exciting contact on the way to the restaurant, but now there was plenty of room in between them. He looked at her and saw her stare out of the window into the sometimes more, sometimes less illuminated London night. He studied her profile and let his eyes wander from her slightly tousled long hair to her chin and the little smile that played around the corner of her mouth.
He broke the silence “hey, anything interesting out there?” She quickly turned and looked at him as if he had caught her in the act of thinking something she was ashamed of. Gerry laughed “A penny for your thoughts”.
She rolled her eyes and shrugged her shoulders. He gave her a little nudge, she gently pushed back and suddenly - how it happened neither one of them knew - their lips met in a kiss. Both drew back quickly and Tamsin put her fingers on her lips in obvious disbelief, whereas Gerry grinned.
That moment the cabbie turned around and asked for her house number. Tamsin told him and turned back to face Gerry, hesitated for a moment before checking her watch “It’s not really that late yet…would you maybe like to come up for a coffee? Err…or do you have to get up early? Maybe it’s not such a good idea…I was just thinking…” but before she could continue, he interrupted her with a smirk “A coffee would be great actually…”
