The morning sunlight shone through Gail’s window as she began to wake. Her body felt heavy as she sat up. Her sleep had been quick and terrible. She tossed and turned all night, Her mind never leaving the incident in the parking lot.
Finally she managed to drag herself out of bed and into the shower. After, she dressed and tip toed down stairs. She prayed that no one would be up, but unfortunately on arriving to the kitchen she found Vanessa cooking breakfast. She turned from the stove and grinned. “Bonjour!”
Gail smiled sweetly at her and went to take a seat. Vanessa followed and sat close to Gail. “Donc vous vous êtes amusé hier soir?” ( So did you have fun last night?)
Gail felt her heart beat increase. What could she tell her? Looking into her eyes Gail couldn’t bring herself to tell Vanessa the awful truth. Plastering on a fake smile Gail chimed. “C'était merveilleux! Johnny était la bonne compagnie.” (It was wonderful! Johnny was good company.)
She giggled and leaned in close. “J'ai un secret.” (I have a secret.)
Gail gulped and prayed that whatever she said would be good. “Accord…” (Okay…)
She licked her lips and when she spoke she was so excited. “Bien vous savez tout ceux-là téléphonent des appels que j'ai obtenu ? Bien l'anniversaire de Johnny monte et bien j'ai planifié un parti de surprise pour lui ! Oh Gail il va être si grand ! Johnny l'aimera ! IL sera tenu à son vieux club, la pièce de Vipère et je tout le monde ai invité ! Il va être une deux chose de jour.. Que pensez-vous ?” (Well you know all those phone calls I have been getting? Well Johnny's birthday is coming up and well I’ve been planning a surprise party for him! Oh Gail it is going to be so great! Johnny will love it! IT will be held at his old club, the Viper room and i've invited everyone! It's going to be a two-day thing... What do you think?)
Gail felt like she had been hit with an anvil. She had gone behind her sister’s back and betrayed her in the worst way. Tears stung at her eyes, she had to get way from her sisters
Standing quickly she went to the sink and got a glass of water. A tear fell as she tried to mask her pain with a cheery voice. “Vanessa qui semble merveilleux ! Johnny l'aimera ! Je pleurniche l'attente.” (Vanessa that sounds wonderful! Johnny will love it! I can’t wait.)
Vanessa giggled and clapped her hands. Gail got herself together and turned to see her sister looking like a giddy little girl. A smile came to her lips and she couldn’t hold back the tears. Vanessa was so happy and content. If she ever found out hat Gail had done she’d be devastated.
Vanessa saw the tears and hurried to her sister’s side. Taking her into her arms she was about to question Gail’s tears, Gail spoke. “Vous savez que je vous aime, la droite ? Je veux seulement que vous ayez été heureux... vous tout êtes me, et je pas veux jamais vous voir mécontent.” ( You know I love you, right? I only want you to be happy... you are everything to me, and i do not want to ever see you unhappy.) She spoke so frantically.
Vanessa shushed Gail soothingly and hugged her tight. “shhh… Je sais, je sais.. Gail je vous aime aussi.. Nous sommes des soeurs. Rien ne peut prendre cela loin.. Il n'y a pas de besoin de pleurer. Je suis ici. Je toujours serai ici.” ( I know, I know... Gail I love you too... We are sisters. Nothing can take that away... There is no need to cry. I'm here. I'll always be here.)
Gail felt her heart shattered then. Her sister was so wonderful. How could she have hurt her. She needed to talk to Johnny and stop this hell she’d created.
After a few minutes she dried her tears and took a deep breath. Untangling herself from her sister’s arm and smiled at the blotchy face of her sister. “Regarder que j'ai fait! Maintenant j'ai vous pleurant.”(Look what I have done! Now I have you crying.)
Vanessa chuckled and wiped her cheeks. “C'est bon… Etes-vous bien? (It’s okay... Are you alright?”)
Gail nodded and hugged her sister again. They separated and Vanessa looked down at her watch and then rolled her eyes. “Cette planification d'anniversaire va me tuer! Je dois aller et dois parler à un ami de Johnny qui m'ai aidé avec tout ceci.” (This birthday planning is going to kill me! I have to go and talk to a friend of Johnny's who has been helping me with all this.)
Gail panicked. Vanessa was leaving… She couldn’t face Johnny right now. Grinning she figured out a solution. “Peux-je vous être fourni avec? J'aimerais vous aider.. Je suis d'habitude pas bon avec ces choses de planification, mais je suis bon à garder de compagnie.” (Can I come with you? I would love to help you... I am usually not good with these planning things, but I am good at keeping company.)
Vanessa grinned and took Gail’s hand. They quickly took off and Gail felt relieved.

The day seemed like it went on forever. Gail decided that she hadn’t quite thought this through; the entire day was spent talking about Johnny and how wonderful he was. By the time they arrived home she was actually glad to be there.
Getting into the house Vanessa took her sunglasses off and shouted out for Johnny. Gail’s stomach flopped as she heard him yell that he was in the living room. My heart raced as we went into the living room. Johnny sat on the couch strumming his guitar. A spark lit in Gail’s stomach as she saw him there. He looked extra good today and she hated it.
Vanessa sat down beside him, pecking him on the lips. He grinned at her and put he guitar to the side of the couch. Gail took a seat across from them and tried to look invisible.
Johnny sat back and put an arm lazily across the back of the couch. “Where did you two go all day?”
He wouldn’t look at Gail. She felt a little better knowing he was as nervous as she was. Vanessa grinned and shrugged. “We went shopping, had a real girlie day.”
He chuckled. “And you didn’t come home with anything?”
Vanessa went to speak then looked around frantically. A grimace came over her face and she groaned. “Dammit! We forgot that bag of stuff we got at that store down town.”
Gail chuckled. “Leave it to me to forget it… I think I left it in that music store.” She hoped Vanessa would get the hint of what Gail really meant.
Thankfully realization dawned in her eyes and she stood. “Well I will be right back. Once again I leave you two to keep each other company… Now be good. I don’t want to get a call while I’m out from the neighbors saying you’re creating too much ruckus.” Vanessa laughed at her little joke and headed towards the door.
Gail gulped and stood quickly. “Can I come?”
Vanessa turned and cocked an eyebrow. “Are you scared of Johnny?”
Gail laughed nervously. “No, of course not.”
She smiled and left. Gail wouldn’t turn around. She heard the door close as Vanessa left and she closed her eyes. She wouldn’t move. What could she do now? Thinking fast she walked out of the room and went to go upstairs.
“Gail, wait.” Johnny’s voice sounded behind her.
Gail wouldn’t stop though. Something in her mind told her that if she got upstairs and in her room everything would be okay. Unfortunately reality had other plans. Johnny stopped her at the top. He grabbed her hand and spun her around. She looked at him and dared to look into his eyes. They were too dark and deep for her to handle. She looked away and huffed. “I don’t want to talk to you.”
He sighed. “Gail… We didn’t do anything…”
She rolled her eyes. “We almost did! I can’t believe you! If it hadn’t been for that horn we would have done something terrible…”
Johnny bit his bottom lip. He looked frantic. “We… We shouldn’t have done what we did… I’m sorry I let it get that far… I never wanted my feelings to get out like that. I’m the one who was wrong here, not you.”
Gail crossed her arms. “I was fully aware of my actions. I am just as much to blame. I let us get into that car… Johnny your pants were unzipped… My dress… It… it was almost all the way off… If I … I hadn’t sat on that horn… We would have gone all the way. How can I live with myself?”
Johnny ran a hand through his hair and turned away slightly. “What a fu.cking mess this is.”
Gail nodded and sighed deeply. “We should just forget about it and move on. No one needs to know what happened…”
Johnny nodded. “Yeah, probably the best idea.” He turned back to her and smiled. “Please forgive me?”
Gail bit her bottom lip and smiled softly. “Okay.”
Johnny grinned and then looked around. “Well… I am going to go and start dinner… you going to join me or just stay up here?”
Gail shrugged. “I’m going to go take a nap. Thanks.”
He smiled and went back down stairs. Gail went into her room and lay down on the bed. Her thoughts swam with the events that had taken place. Last night he had said everything, did everything… he seduced her, but today he was totally different. She could see he’d been panicked about it. This had shaken him to the core. It made her content, but at the same time a feeling of regret came over her.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
She woke later and went down stairs. Johnny and Vanessa were setting the table. a song played on the radio and Johnny sang along as he placed forks and knives beside the plates. Vanessa stopped putting the plates out and looked at him. “You are such a nerd.”
He snorted and scrunched his nose up. He wore a pair of turtle shell glasses and so it added to the effect. He went close to her and spoke in a nasally voice. “Pretty lady...” He began to breath heavily and over exaggerated.
Vanessa laughed and shook her head. “Now you are just creepy.”
Johnny chuckled and took her into his arms, kissing her passionately. She giggled into the kiss and he bent her backwards over the table. It grew hot and heavy and Gail began walking away. The show made her feel physically sick to her stomach. She had been so awful. they were so in love. Coming here had bee a mistake. Rushing upstairs she packed quickly and quietly and then went downstairs again. Entering the kitchen she found them back to setting up the dishes. Both looked disheveled and Gail knew more had happened after she left.
Johnny looked up and Vanessa gave her sister a grin, which fell as soon as she saw the bags in her sister’s hands. Rushing over she had a look of uttermost fear. “What are you doing with your bags?”
Gail had come up with a story she felt would help her out of this. “Well I feel so sorry about this, but the Magazine has a client they want me to shoot but I have to go right away, he will not reschedule… I am so sorry. I really wanted to stay. I was having such a good time here.” She attempted what she hoped was a sad, apologetic look.
Vanessa looked close to tears. “Oh no! You cannot leave! We haven’t spent enough time together! We haven’t done anything I wanted to! Oh this is just not good!”
She sniffed and Gail hugged her. “I’m sorry… There’s nothing I can do… I will come back, I promise.”
Vanessa turned her and Gail towards Johnny. “Johnny, cant you call someone?”
He gave a stern look of determination. “I will try.”
Gail thought quickly. “Don’t!” She turned her self to look at the chagrinned Vanessa. “I have to do this. It is a really well paying gig and I could use the money… I will call you and we can get together again soon… Right after I come back… You can come and stay with me. Just you and me in my flat… No boys allowed.” She grinned and then gave a playful fake glare at Johnny.
Vanessa giggled and nodded sadly. “Alright… I guess if you have too… I would enjoy staying with you… And just girl’s sounds like it will be so fun! Alright… I will let you go, but call me as soon as you get home… And everyday after… I want us to be close again.”
Gail smiled and kissed her sister’s cheek. “Thank you… and I will call you every chance I get.”
Vanessa stuck out her bottom lip and looked up into her sister’s eyes. “Traverse votre coeur et votre espoir pour mourir, enfoncer une aiguille dans votre pelote à épingles ?” (Cross your heart and hope to die, stick a needle in your pincushion?)
Gail smiled fondly at the old saying her sister and her would use when they were little. Her mother didn’t like them saying “stick a needle in your eye” because it was too violent. She nodded and hugged Vanessa close. “Traverse votre coeur et votre espoir pour mourir, enfoncer une aiguille dans votre pelote à épingles.”
After parting, Gail looked at her watch and sighed. “Well I have to go… now actually. The magazine set a flight up for me and everything. They need me their ASAP… So I guess I’ll get a cab then.”
Vanessa shook her head. “NO sister of mine is leaving in a cab. Johnny and I will drive you there.”
Gail shook her head. “I couldn’t impose. You’ve already been so kind.”
Vanessa insisted and soon they were driving to the airport. Johnny hadn’t spoken a word and Vanessa wouldn’t stop talking. She spoke of the many things they would do when they saw each other again and the two sisters made plans to visit there parents and spend some time in there old favorite places.
When they arrived at the airport, Johnny carried her bags and Vanessa held Gail’s hand in her own tightly. When they got to the point where they had to say goodbye Vanessa wept and spent more then needed hugging and gushing over her sister. True anguish was felt by both sisters, but for completely different reasons.
Gail turned to Johnny and he reluctantly gave her a stiff hug. While in his arms he whispered, “Clever” In a knowing tone.
She stepped back quickly and her mouth fell open. He knew she was lying. He saw right through her every time and Gail found it astounding. She stifled her need to defend herself to him and smiled. “it was nice meeting you Johnny… You are a good man and I know you and my sister will be very happy together.”
He smiled. “Thank you… It was a pleasure meeting you too. You are just as Vanessa professed. I hope we can meet again soon.”
Gail nodded curtly and then sighed taking her bags into her hands. “Alright, well I am going to get in line now. I love you little sister. I will call you as soon as I get home.”
She nodded and they hugged once more before Johnny pulled her away and they left. Sighing in overwhelming relief, Gail looked around. Now all she had to do was book a flight that was leaving hopefully soon.
