Chapter Seven
“I'm not gay you know.” Orlando hissed in Logan's ear the following Wednesday at lunch. They had been actively avoiding each other since they both returned to work on Monday.
“I never said you were.” Logan countered. Of course he was gay. He'd been flirting with her all Saturday night and then there was the kiss. Who did he think he was fooling?
“Well you just be sure you have that straight. I'm straight. Not gay.” He was still whispering. “So don't get a crush on me or anything.”
“What? I don't have a crush on you.” She whispered back. OK that was a small lie she did have a huge crush on him but she wasn't going to say that to him. “You were the one who kissed me.”
“Don't! Do not ever mention that again.” He looked pained by the memory...she was insulted. It had been a damned good kiss. “I was drunk and you came onto me and I would never have kissed you otherwise no matter how good you smell or how soft your lips look...” He trailed off while he stared at her lips. And she couldn't help but to slip her tongue out and wet them. He seemed to shake the thought from his mind and continued talking. “Stop doing that. I'm serious. I am not gay.”
“Well neither am I. And I didn't seduce you. You have been the one making all the moves on me.”
“What? I have not. Let's just forget about it and never ever mention it again.” He demanded.
“Fine by me.” Logan replied and stood up from the table and walked away without a second glance back. 'What a total dick. Just because he's too afraid to come out of the closet doesn't mean I should have to deal with his sexual identity crisis.” And why was she even upset that he was mad and didn't want to talk about the kiss? She didn't want a boyfriend, she certainly wasn't in the position to deal with a boyfriend after what Chad had been like. It didn't matter that it really was the single best kiss of her life. She wondered how much more she could be fucked up. If a kiss with a man who thought he was kissing another guy was her hottest kiss ever. Well if he never wanted to mention it again well that was fine by her, she wouldn't. In fact if she never talked to Orlando Bloom again that was just peachy with her. It was better this way, she had less chance of being discovered if she kept to herself. Only the years of abusive training Chad had given her had helped her hold back the tears that threatened to escape at the thought of never talking to Orlando again.
Orlando watched Logan walk away and fought the urge to follow him. He didn't want to fight with him. He just didn't want to kiss him anymore.
'Liar.' He heard his own voice taunting him in his head. 'Well just because I'm going through some sort of phase doesn't mean I'm gay. I've just been hanging out with Logan too much and not with women.' He thought. That was all he needed, a good shag with a beautiful woman, sex in an cramped washroom stall, or on his couch or her bent over on the balcony with New York spread out around them. The problem was the more he thought about it the the more the women began to look like Logan, until it was Logan he was holding in his arms.
“God damn it!.” He growled.
Orlando watched Logan work, it seemed all he did when he wasn't on the set acting or talking to the director was watch Logan. It was almost frightening the obsession that seemed to have overwhelmed him. He knew how Logan drank his coffee, that he didn't like mustard on his pastrami sandwiches, always had to pee at 2:30 pm, you could set a watch by him, played with the hair at the back of his head a lot and chewed his fingernails. He knew countless other things too, even if he knew he was bordering
on stalking, he didn't care. He had to know what it was about Logan that made him feel this way. He had even looked at Brokeback Mountain to see if the gay love scenes had turned him on. It hadn't, in fact seeing his mate Heath Ledger making out with Jake Gyllenhaal had almost made his testicles crawl inside his body. So Orlando had come to the conclusion he wasn't gay. It was something about Logan. The problem was clearly with Logan and Orlando was going to find out what it was.
“This sucks so bad.” Logan muttered. She was in standing in the middle of a forest in Upstate New York where they were filming some scenes that had to be filmed out doors. It wasn't that she didn't like the setting, it was gorgeous, filled with brilliant red, gold and orange leaves, she just didn't feel comfortable with having to share a room with Jeff. It was going to be incredibly difficult to keep her secret with him in the same room as her. At least it was only for three days. She also wasn't happy that she would essentially be stuck in the middle of nowhere with Orlando close by. They hadn't spoken again but it was impossible not to look at him, watch him rub his thumb over his lips when he was deep in though or recklessly running his hands through his hair no matter how upset Jan got with him for messing up her “work”. And on the odd occasion they locked eyes, there was something in them that scared her. Not fear for her life like when Chad got angry but fear for the safety of her heart. If she got tangled up with him not only would she end up broken hearted when her lie was revealed but he would too, he was interested in a man that didn't exist, she felt bad for doing that to him but her own survival had to come first.
Because only a small portion of the cast and crew came for the shoot, they all had dinner together in a small restaurant near the hotel they were staying at. It was more of a tavern type place with some pool tables, a karaoke stage and jukebox, as well as a medium sized dance floor. The owner of the establishment was only too happy to have them spend their money there and closed the place down for them to eat with the tables pushed together. Orlando was pulled to his seat by Jan and found himself sitting across from Logan. They stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity, Orlando saw the same emotions he felt reflected back at him in Logan's eyes. He wanted to look away, he wanted to pretend that Logan didn't effect him but it was nearly impossible and he only managed to look down at his plate when Logan looked away to answer one of Jeff's questions. He couldn't help the flare of jealousy that shot through him when Logan and Jeff shared a laugh, Jeff wasn't that interesting. He rolled his eyes and turned back to Jan intent on talking to her and putting Logan out of his mind. And he succeeded until the food was brought out. Watching Logan eat was tantamount to torture. Why hadn't he ever noticed how daintily Logan ate before? Careful bites that were always followed by a napkin, wiping at any crumbs that may be lingering on his face. He never talked with his mouth full or chewed with his mouth open.
“What a poof.” Orlando thought purposely talking to Jan with his mouth full, he decided to embrace his masculinity. He even started up a conversation about American football which he only knew the basics of. 'Ha! I'm not gay. I like sports and beer and women.' He thought chugging a beer with one hand and throwing his other arm around Jan's shoulder. He wondered if Logan had noticed that and snuck a look to see if he was jealous. He couldn't help the irritation he felt when he saw that Logan was still talking to Jeff. What was so interesting about Jeff? He wasn't handsome, and he had ear hair. Weren't they sharing a room?
“Let's go dance Jan.” Orlando suggested loudly, hoping Logan would hear and led Jan out onto the floor with a few other couples dancing. He couldn't help looking over at Logan every time he got the chance, feeling hurt when every time he did look, Logan was not looking at him.
Sometimes being a woman pretending to be a guy really sucked. It was bad enough she had to share a room with Jeff but then she got her period. How was she going to hide that for two more days? Her plan was to never use the washroom in their room. She would use the public washroom on the main floor and dispose of all her feminine products there in the washroom garbage. The only problem was keeping the unused products hidden from Jeff. Oh...and buying them.
Logan walked down the main street of the town towards the only store opened late at night, hoping she could quickly grab some tampons or something and get out of there quickly. She nodded at the clerk and walked to the aisle housing the feminine products, it also held the toothpaste, toilet paper, soap and shampoo. She was pretending to be interested in the razors when she felt someone stand beside her.
“You left the party early.” It was more of an accusation then a comment.
“Yeah I have a headache.” Logan told Orlando, not even looking at him, but her heart was pounding, what was he doing here?
“I have some Tylenol is that's what you are looking for.” Orlando offered. All she wanted was for him to leave her alone so she could get her things.
“I need to buy some anyway and some other stuff too.” She told him. He stood there looking at her, expectantly. “What are you doing here?”
“Me? I was just....picking up some things too.” He looked over the products on the shelf and picked up a box of Q-Tips and then he picked up some tissues before turning to look at Logan.
“Well I need to get some props that were damaged.” She thought up the lie on the spot. Not a bad one. There had been some props damaged. She began picking up items off the shelf that would be found in a medicine cabinet, grabbing the tampons in the middle of grabbing some toothpaste and hairspray. 'Please let him fall for it.' She prayed. When she had amassed a small pile of “props” she walked to the counter without waiting for him and dumped the stuff on the counter, taking some money out of her pocket and handing it to the cashier when he was finished. She nodded a good-bye to Orlando and left before he could finish paying for his purchases, hoping she could beat him back to the hotel. She was almost running by the time she got to her room, breathing hard and sweating.
“God this sucks.” She muttered.
Orlando watched Jeff and Logan set up for the shot. It was the last day of shooting upstate and the stunt man had fallen onto a picnic table he wasn't supposed to have. Now they were waiting while everything was reset in the exact same positions. Watching them take a few new glasses out to replace the broken ones had Orlando's mind recalling following Logan to the store and surprising him. He hadn't really paid attention to what Logan had said or bought, more preoccupied by just looking at Logan but now he recalled the items that Logan had purchased for the props department. It didn't make sense. Why would he buy them? The props that had been damaged had been part of wardrobe's props. Something was working it's way around in his head but he just couldn't catch it. He was pretty certain Logan had lied but why lie in the first place? There was no shame in buying toothpaste. Shaking his head, Orlando added it to the other mysteries that seemed to surround Logan Parker.
When Logan returned from upstate both Teddy and Joey were at home, watching the Giants play the Chicago Bears. They turned off the TV as soon as she walked in and she got a very nervous feeling, they never turned off football.
“Hey guys.” She said smiling.
“Logan, some dude has been hanging around looking for you.” Teddy said it was clear he was worried, his eyes dark with concern. “He's been tot he restaurant.”
“Oh God.” She whispered, the hairs on her neck standing up with the chills of terror she suddenly felt. “Who?”
“Some guy named Chad. He's looking for his wife.” Joey answered. There was silence for several minutes while Logan tried to figure out what to do next.
“We know, Logan. He showed us a picture of you.” Teddy finally spoke.
“I have to go. It's not safe.” She gasped, survival instinct kicking in.
“Calm down.” Joey said, placing his hand on Logan's shoulder. “We didn't tell him anything. We acted like we hadn't seen you. And he's still looking for a woman.”
“How did he find me?” She wondered.
“He came to the restaurant. Must have tracked down your Social Security number.” Teddy told her. “What's the deal? Why did you leave your husband?”
“We aren't married. Thank God. I got sick of the beatings. I can't let him find me. He'll kill me.” Her mind was turning frantically, trying to formulate a plan.
“I have some money put away but I can't leave now. I get a huge bonus when the movie is done.” She said out loud.
“I could try to find you a place to stay.” Teddy offered.
“I don't want to involve your friends. You don't know how crazy he can get.” She warned.
“I can get you a gun.” Joey offered. Teddy didn't looked at all shocked by the offer even though she was floored.
“I don't know anything about guns. I would probably just kill myself or some innocent person. No guns.”
“Well take this then.” Joey went to a drawer in his computer desk and took out what looked like a hunting knife in a sheath and a can of what she assumed was pepper spray. “You need to find somewhere safe to go. Teddy and I can take turns going to work with you. Maybe you could find someone to go home with you to be safe.”
“You guys are awesome. I don't have anywhere to go and I won't stay here.” She bit her lip while she tried to figure out what to do.
“What about Bloom?” Teddy asked. “He's in that fancy hotel with lots of security and you guys hang out. Do you think he would put you up for a few weeks til the film is done?”
“I don't know. We had a fight.” She told them. It was a great place to stay though, and she could take a cab with him everyday. Chad didn't know about her working for the film, there was no way he could, they kept all the information private until the film was completed so he couldn't trace her through her social security number that way. And he would never think she would be living with Orlando Bloom.
“It's worth a try.” She picked up the phone and dialed his cellphone number.
“Hello?”
“Hi it's me, Logan.”
“Hello.” He sounded wary.
“Listen I really hate to bother you but I just got home and my room mates told me that I have to leave for a few weeks because of....” She wasn't sure what to say but Teddy whispered.
“Toxic mold.” To her and she used it.
“Because of toxic mold. The city health department has locked us out of the unit until the landlord cleans it up. So I need somewhere to stay. Just until it's cleaned out.”
“And you want to stay here? With me? I don't know if that's a good idea Logan.” She knew what he meant. She would have to do her best to avoid him, even being in the same hotel room with him.
“I won't be a bother. I promise. Please. I'm desperate.”
“Alright. But we'll need to talk first, set some ground rules.”
“I understand. I'll be over soon. Thank you Orlando.”
Bye.” He hung up and she winced.
“Come on let's pack up your stuff, we'll take you over.” Joey told her.
“You know I never would have guessed you were a chick. That picture your ex showed me...damn you were smoking hot. You wanna go on a date when this is over?” Joey asked with a teasing laugh.
Orlando stood by the door watching Logan say good-bye to her room mates. They made plans to get together and “pick up some broads” and get drunk. He frowned when they both hugged Logan in a tight embrace and curled his hands into fists when the one named Teddy whispered into Logan's ear. Pushing down the jealousy he walked to the kitchen area of the suite and took out a bottle of iced tea and drank a long swallow. Five minutes of living together and he was already losing it. Why had he agreed to this? He knew why, he couldn't say no to Logan, he sensed there was more to it. The desperation in Logan's voice told him so. And he hoped he could find out some of Logan's secrets. He heard the door shut and he walked back out.
“So let's talk.”
