“Hey Bam, who do you miss the most?” Ville asked out of the blue. They were both sitting on the line where grass became sand, in the nice shadow of the big tree they were sitting under. Indian style with some mango’s and shattered coconuts surrounding them.
Dinner was suppose to be meat. Maybe a bird, or some fish. Perhaps even a rabbit. But after an awful, pathetic attempt to hurt the sweet little animals, or swim after the slippery fish, they decided fruits and nuts would do just fine. For now anyway, because they both knew that would eventually have to change, if they were going to be stuck here much longer. Fruits and coconuts wouldn’t do forever. Forever was a long time, you see.
“What?” Ville glanced to his side, seeing Bam sitting next to him in the comfortable but still too warm to his liking, shadow, shirtless and holding a mango to his mouth. Chewing and sucking up the juice that dripped down his chin. Ville winced a little, hating how he couldn’t look the boy in the eyes anymore without sweating, ever since this morning. Everything he did suddenly seemed inappropriate.
“Who do you miss? Like friend or family. I know it’s only been a couple of days but…..there’s got to be some one.”
“Oh.” Bam frowned for a minute, tearing pieces of his juicy mango with
his teeth, and obviously thinking hard before answering.
“I guess my friend Ryan. I didn’t see him that much anymore but…..he's pretty cool.”He finally said with a shrug. Then, spitting out a part of the bitter shell, and making Ville yelp when the slimy substance only missed his leg by an inch.
“No other friends? Just Ryan?” Ville asked, shooting him a glare for the spit ball while chewing on a piece of pearly white coconut. Bam shrugged again, not really wanted to go where Ville was taking him. He didn’t need to know he had become a social retard just yet. “I had lots of friends. Even a fiancé. But they couldn’t handle my….'little problem’ so they all disappeared. Even my parents don’t come around as often.”
Bam air quoted ‘little problem’ with his hands, dropping his mango and cursing when sand got stuck to the yellow fruit. “Or maybe they do these days. I wouldn’t know being on a deserted island and all.”
Ville smiled at the little joke, but instantly felt a bit sad again. He had forgotten about Bam’s depression since last night. Maybe because he hadn’t seen him much today yeah, but also because the boy was smiling and joking around so very often. He was sarcastic and sharp sometimes, but he didn’t come across as unhappy. Not like he had seemed last night, sobbing like a little child. Maybe he didn’t need the medication as much as he claimed.
Or maybe it were just the night, since at those times they always seemed to open up in different ways. The darkness hiding their facial expression, tears and red cheeks. Taking away their insecurities or being misunderstood, or made fun of. By day Bam was almost as bright as the sun, looking like he was doing just fine, while he; Ville, was just a reserved guy trying to
survive on a deserted island.
Not as much at ease as Bam had grown with the sea, the forest, the beach and the lake. He was climbing trees now, and diving for fish. Something Ville just couldn’t see himself doing.
Even though he was also doing better. The fresh air, the lack of work stress, which often drove him up the wall at home and making him smoke the shit out of one cigarette after the other, plus the knowledge he couldn’t get a smoke anyway because they were simply not here, eased his body a little. There was no temptation, because there was….well, simply no temptation.
“I’m sorry to hear that. You deserve more.” He replied kindly, making Bam snort loudly, while making a face when he realized his last bite was still covered in sand, causing him to spit on the ground again.
“How very politically correct of you.” He finally grinned, wiping his mouth and shuddering when he still felt sand crushing between his teeth when he chewed.
Ville laughed at the faces Bam made, obviously grossed out by the sound the crunchy sand made in his mouth, but grew silent when Bam asked him the same question.
“So, who do you miss Ville.”
Ville didn’t really need to think hard about that one. He missed making his music. Missed singing his songs. “My band members. They're my best friends and….well I miss them. And my parents. My brother. The whole lot.” He said, his voice cracking a bit, making Bam smile pitiful at him.
“I understand.” He just muttered, eating the last bit of his mango, and throwing the hard centre as far as he could, seeing it land on the white sand ahead of him. “Oh and my fiancé Jonna. Of course I miss her too.” Ville suddenly added, feeling extremely guilty this was the first time he actually though of his wife-to-be since he had been here. It was weird but…..no, it was just weird.
“Wow a fiancé. She must be really worried.” Bam sympathized him, standing up from the ground and dusting off his clothes. The blank look on Ville’s face didn’t give anything away, and he carefully placed a hand on his companions shoulder, making him jump a little.
“We’ll get off this island Ville. You’ll see her again. Don’t worry.” He spoke with a little smile. Feeling somewhat happy he was the confident one this time. For being in charge for the first time since they got here. The hand rested upon his shoulder a second too long before Bam withdraw it. Making the skin tingly from the warm touch of Bam’s soft hand.
Their eyes met and lingered on each other for a small moment. A split-second
too long, yet again. Making them connect in a way they hadn’t let themselves connect before.
It made them realize they were really just two men on an island. Both scared and alone. And in need for some understanding, comfort. They didn’t need to stand across from each other, when they were really standing shoulder to shoulder in this.
Ville didn’t know why, but the touch of Bam’s hand was comforting in a way. It almost made him believe the words he had spoken. Almost.
But then Bam turned, and the moment was gone. “I’m going to find some sharp stones in the lake, so we can try and shave. I don’t want go all Robinson Cruise on this island you know.” He joked making Ville laugh a shy laugh.
“Good idea man, I’ll see you in a minute.” And saw him disappear behind the trees as he walked. Leaving Ville alone with his thoughts about his girl back home.
‘Wow, she must be really worried.’ Bam’s words echoed in his head, making him grimace. He was sure Jonna was more angry then worried. She would probably be convinced he took this cruise to leave her or cheat on her. Furious he wasn’t answering his phone. Thinking this was all a plan to hurt her.
He signed deeply. It had been the reason the had broken up with her the first time. Her paranoia, her little mind games. Her belief that every single thing that happened was about her somehow. That every thing he did was because of her.He loved her, but it was wearing him out.
And now he hadn’t even thought of her. The one person he should miss the most. Was that a sign or something? That if they would get off this godforsaken island, he should find someone that made his eyes sparkle when he saw her? And his heart ache when he was away? It was funny how he could sing about true love so beautifully, without experiencing it like he should.
He had realized this all before, but this time it was so real. He needed more then this. He needed something…….different.
He stood up with a sigh, walking in the direction of the lake while throwing away the empty shell of his coconut. The sun was already starting to set, so he better start helping Bam find a razor.
**
That evening they both laid down on the rubber boat again. The nights were way early, but because they couldn’t see a damn thing after the sun went down, they figured sleeping was the best thing to make it all be over as soon as possible. They had both shaved in the lake, and the sharp stones they had found actually worked somewhat as a razor.
Then the sky had turned orange, and forced them to walk back to the boat, somewhat frightened by the sounds the animals made at night.
Ville let out a huge yawn before laying down and curling up. The whole thing wiggled when Bam stepped in, hugging himself against the cool air, and laying down close to Ville. They didn’t say much, until Bam’s voice suddenly came from beside Ville, very small but still loud enough to hear.
“Ville, what if a ship never comes? What if we're stuck here forever? What if we die here?”
Three questions that left Ville silent. What could he say? What did Bam want to hear? He didn’t know, but he knew he was too tired to come up with something good.
“You were supposed to be the strong one today remember.” He joked lightly, but Bam didn’t laugh. He just kept silent, until his barely audible voice continued.
“And what if that thought doesn’t scare me so much. I don’t know why Ville, but it doesn’t. I feel so much more real, more myself here, then I've felt in years. Because no one asks me to be someone I’m not. I don’t miss home as much as I should. And it freaks me out.”
Bam spoke soft and quick, but Ville understood what he said. And it almost made him angry, he had to force the tears appearing in his eyes back, not wanting them to fall just yet. Not with Bam watching. It almost made him angry that Bam could make him feel this weak by being so true. He wished he could think Bam was a complete fool for saying stuff like this, but he
couldn’t. Because in a way, he felt it too. He wanted to go back one day, but…..now, being here, was pretty ok. It was almost just what he had needed.
“Ville, do you think I’m strange now?” Bam voice broke his thoughts, forcing Ville to fight harder against the welling water in his eyes. Bam’s small voice, being scared and vulnerable at night, dropping the tough mask he wore by day, broke his heart again and again. His shaking body from the cold, and the fear in his eyes. He was like a little boy who needed his mother.
“No Bam. Now come here, you're freezing.” Bam heard him say, and before he knew it, two strong, warm arms encircled him, pulling him close and making him warm. Ville was holding him, warming him and comforting him. Without shame or awkwardness, like this morning, and Bam felt himself grow calm, sleepy and warm.
“Don’t worry Bammie, just get some sleep. I’ll be right here.” Ville’s deep voice soothed him, and he suddenly felt two warm, velvet soft lips press against his temple, making his insides grow weak from the feeling.
A kiss. It had been so long since he'd been kissed. Even like this.
‘Bammie….?’ Was the last thing going through his mind, as he felt Ville's tender hand stroke his messy curls light and lazily, before he dozed of.
Tomorrow, things would be different, they both knew.
