Ireland stretched and looked at the clock as the alarm went off. She’d had the most wonderful dream and…she smelled coffee. The little coffee pot in the room was already brewing. She stepped out of bed and wrapped herself in the robe in her closet. She was filling her cup with coffee when the door lock clicked and Eric walked in.
“Hey beautiful. I wasn’t sure if you drank coffee so I went to grab some more just in case.” He saw the blank look on her face and wrapped his arms around her. “You ok?”
“Yeah, just…” Ireland started thinking. They were on the couch and then they were watching TV on the bed but…damn. “Did we, uh…”
“Wow, you must have been tired. We laid down to watch the news and you couldn’t have been awake for more than 5 minutes. I went to get up and leave but you woke up and asked me to stay, so I laid down and went to sleep. You’re a cover hog, by the way.”
She laughed and playfully smacked his arm. “Hey, where’d you get the clothes?”
“Always keep a spare set in your car. Comes in handy if you spill a drink on yourself.” He pointed to the duffle bag on the couch. “I could live out of that bag for a week if I had to.”
Ireland sipped at her coffee and pushed the power button on the TV and it was already showing the morning news. “Did you get more creamer? They never leave enough.” Eric produced several packets of cream and sugar from his pocket and put them on the dresser next to the coffee pot. “Oh you are a GOD.” They sat and watched the news for a few minutes and Eric’s phone rang.
“What’s up, George? Oh, no that’s ok. I got coffee. Uh, no I just…got up really early today.” Eric looked at Ireland helplessly and shrugged.
“Oh gimme that,” Ireland grabbed Eric’s phone. “Hey, George. No we’re in my room having coffee. Yeah, I’m sure he’ll drive me since he’s already here. We’ll talk about it later. Ok. Bye.” She clicked Eric’s phone shut. “If you don’t want people to know you spent the night here, that’s your prerogative, but I personally don’t care. Let people talk if it entertains them. And I wasn’t asking if we slept together because I would have been ashamed of doing it.” She reached her hand around Eric’s neck and kissed him. “I’m going to shower and change.”
Ireland got up and sifted through the drawers to find what she wanted. She felt Eric grab her coffee out of her hand so she turned around. He pinned her against the wall and bent down to kiss her. He pulled the rubber band out of her hair and rubbed his hands through it. She slid her hands under his T-shirt and rubbed his back and abs. She slid away just enough to speak. “I need to take a shower or we are going to be really late.”
“You look beautiful.”
“You’re a bad liar and my teeth are fuzzy.” She rose up on tip toe and kissed his nose before grabbing her clothes and walking into the bathroom.
Eric cracked the door ever so slightly. “What do you want for breakfast?”
“I don’t really do breakfast. But if you brought me a bagel and cream cheese I’d probably eat it. Can you get my phone if it rings?” She turned on the shower and stepped in.
Eric took her phone and room key and went downstairs to see if he could find a bagel. He walked down to the Fashion Show Mall, grabbed some breakfast and headed back to the room. Ireland was sitting on the bed, dressed, brushing her hair. “Perfect timing,” he tossed the phone to her and dug out the food he bought.
“You actually went to find me a bagel and cream cheese? Very cute. Adorable even.”
“I’m adorable now? I think the last person to call me that was my aunt…when I was five.” He kissed her forehead and took a bite of his bagel. “Ready?”
“Ready,” she opened the door and walked back to his car with him.
“There you are!” George ran up to them when they arrived at the lab sets. “Not answering my calls now?”
Ireland looked at her phone. One missed call. “Oops. I guess we had the music up too loud. What’s up?”
“Just wanted to talk to you,” George grabbed her by the shoulders and steered her away from Eric. “Wanna tell me what happened?”
“Uh, wow, ok big brother that I’ve apparently just inherited. I’d love to except there’s one tiny problem. Nothing happened. He slept at the hotel last night. And by slept I do mean eyes closed, snoring, the whole bit. Can I go now CSI Stokes, or are you going to arrest me for having a life?” Ireland turned around to get her wardrobe for the day.
“Hey, c’mon. I just…I know you’re new at this and I’m just trying to look out for you. I don’t want you to get all wrapped up with him just because you have to do it on screen.” George handed her a bottle of water.
“Well for your information, he kissed me. I just let him.” Ireland kept walking into the dressing rooms with her days clothes.
“Trying to piss her off or just succeeding?” George turned around and found Eric standing right behind him.
“Just succeeding. Look man, nothing against you. She’s a newbie and I don’t want her to get hurt. She’s my friend.” George opened the bottle of water he still held and took a drink.
“You’re sure she’s just your friend?” Eric watched as Ireland chatted with Marg and Jorja.
“Dude, no. Not like that.” George sighed. “I’m not saying you can’t date her or anything. That’s between you and her. But she’s not a celebrity. She’s not used to the lights and the cameras and people following you everywhere. She hasn’t even gotten 15 seconds to get used to that and now you two are practically dating. I just don’t want her dumped into a shark tank and left to fend for herself.”
“George, man, don’t worry about it. It’s just casual. It’s not like we’re getting married tomorrow or anything. We’re just kind of dating. By the way, do you want to go out and grab a beer tonight? She’s probably going to be tired as hell and I’m not in the mood to be stuck in my bedroom with nothing to do.” Eric leafed through his copy of the script.
“Sure. Call me when you’re ready to go out.” George walked over to the set where he was due to begin shooting his scene.
Eric walked over to the group of girls where Ireland was talking. “Ready to shoot?”
Ireland held up her script and pointed it in the direction of the hallway they would be shooting in. “Ready as I’ll ever be I suppose. Let’s hit the road, Jack.”
Eric sat himself down behind the counters and machines and Ireland leaned over him, poised for her cue.
“These ones are brand new. We just got them two months ago. They do twice the workload in half the time.” Eric pointed to a mass spectrometer.
“We got something similar at my old lab a couple weeks ago. They’re amazing aren’t they?” Ireland turned in to kiss Eric and waited for the footsteps.
William walked into the scene. “Greg, what are you doing?”
“He was just showing me your new equipment, Dr. Grissom,” Ireland popped straight up to standing again. “They’re amazing. I was able to use them briefly at my lab in Washington.”
“Oh good. Well I want you to go back out to the strip. You saved the scene, so you’ve earned the chance to process it. Take Nick with you.” He handed her some papers and watched as she saluted and left the room. “Now you can explain to me what that was all about.”
“What was what was all about, Grissom?” Eric grabbed papers from the counters and pretended to organize them.
“You trying to kiss the new CSI in the middle of the lab,” William handed over the small evidence bindle he still held. “And then I need DNA from this.”
Eric stood up and started processing the hairs in the bindle. “We uh, well we dated back in college for a while,” Eric laughed fondly. “Only really ended it because she wanted to move to Washington. She liked the snow.”
“Greg, I don’t care what you do in your personal life, but make sure it’s on your own time,” William turned around and as he was walked out, shouted over his shoulder. “And make sure it’s not in the middle of the lab!”
