It was a couple of weeks later and Neil had just returned home. It had been a long day at the studio, his back ached and he was tired and only wanted to get that Indian take-away dish he bough on his way home into the microwave, change into some comfortable clothes and then settle down on the sofa to watch the news.
He contemplated taking a brief shower but decided against it. He would take a long nice hot bath after he finished his dinner instead. Upstairs in his bedroom his thoughts wandered back briefly to that fateful night he had tried to kiss Stefan.
He sighed. He regretted it immensely. Somehow their friendship was not like it had been before the incident. Stefan still came for visits and they still talked a lot, even on the phone, which Neil usually hated but he was trying to keep a safe distance.
No cuddling, no encouraging embraces, just their usual welcome and goodbye kisses. He sighed; it was not easy trying to stay on neutral ground. He still felt like walking on eggshells around the kid even though Stefan had never even mentioned what had happened. Neil was pretending that everything was back to normal, but deep down in his heart he knew he was lying to himself. Him and Dean were drifting apart; he still was head over heels with Stefan and above all felt totally miserable for having somehow ruined their friendship.
He had just changed into an old pair of jeans and a T-shirt when the doorbell rang. Once, twice, three times. "Oh no!" he muttered and hurried downstairs again. Company was the last thing he wanted now, especially not Dean's. He did not want to fight. He did not want to talk. He just wanted to be left alone. The bell rang again just when he was opening the door.
"Couldn't you have phoned before?" he barked but when he looked up he did not see whom he was expecting. It was Stefan who stood in front of his door, not his boyfriend. Stefan who looked absolutely lovely in his faded jeans and big pullover, looking sadly at him with those amazing pale blue eyes.
"I didn't want to disturb you," he said apologetically. "I can go if you don't want to see me."
"No!" Neil protested. "No, please come in. I just though you were someone else.
Do you want to share my Indian take-away?"
He let the boy into the living room where they both said down at opposite ends of the dining table.
"No, thanks. I'm not hungry. I... I just wanted to talk to you" Stefan told him, nervously avoiding to look straight into his friend's eyes.
"Okay, I'll listen," was all Neil was able to say. He forced himself to appear calm when in reality he was afraid. No, not afraid; he was terrified. He swallowed and waited for Stefan to speak.
“Do you think I’m gay?” The boy finally asked. For a long moment all Neil could do was stare. This question had hit him totally unprepared.
“Well, no. I don’t think you are gay,” he answered hesitantly.
“Then why did you kiss me?” the boy demanded.
Neil felt suddenly cold inside. So he had been right all along, the boy was angry or offended or both and had just been too polite to say anything sooner. He would tell him to go to hell. He did not want to lose Stefan, even though he never had really had him the way he dreamed off. He valued the boy far too much as a friend, as a comforting company whenever his life got turbulent.
"I am really sorry and I mean it. I did not want to frighten you, Steve. I guess I was just drunk,” he tried to explain, sounding only too unconvincing to his own ears.
"No, you weren't!" Stefan sounded furious now. "I know you when you are drunk and you were not drunk after Ian's party. I don't want to go on like that with you, Neil.
I cannot stand this. You are acting so strange. I do not know what I shall do," Stefan went on but Neil, seeing the hurt in those beautiful eyes interrupted.
“Listen, I said I was sorry and it’s true. It won’t happen again, promised. I will…”
“You don't get me, Neil. I'm not angry. I never was. I..." Stefan was biting his lower lip, now for the first time looking up to meet Neil’s gaze.
"I liked the kiss. I always liked to be close to you and now you don't let me anymore. I wish you would kiss me again."
"What?" Neil was on the edge of his seat by now, his heart beating frantically.
He had expected anything but this.
"I want you to kiss me again," the boy said quietly. "I think I might... I...I guess I'm in love with you."
Neil was totally speechless. All he could do was stare at this kid in front of him whom had just made him the happiest man on earth. Stefan thought he was in love with him. Everything else did not matter right now.
"Get up, please and come over here," he finally said in shaky voice that did not sound like his own.
Stefan did as he was told and Neil got up to face him, almost knocking down his chair in the process. They stood there facing each other in silence for while.
Neil’s thoughts were turning, he felt dizzy, feverish, excited and triumphant all at the same time. His hands were shaking when he reached out to touch Stefan’s face in wonder. He rested his forehead against the boy’s, closing his eyes for a second in order to understand this roller-coaster ride of emotions.
“I’m in love with you, too. Have been for quite a while now,” he whispered but before the boy could say anything he put one finger over his lips.
“You want me to kiss you?”
Stefan just nodded.
“Then I will.”
He took the boy’s chin and lifted it up slightly. With a smile he let his lips brush against Stefan’s, for a moment enjoying the sweet innocent feeling. Stefan sighed and pressed his lips harder against his and finally they were united in a careful searching kiss in which their tongues explored each other’s mouths. They were kissing for what seemed an eternity. When they finally broke it, the boy was breathless and smiled: “Does that make me gay now?”
“I don’t care as long you keep kissing me like that,” Neil muttered.
