The sudden sound of loud sirens and whistles startled Natalie awake. She sat up with a stifled scream at the warning lights she could see outside of her window coming from the direction of the main area of the base. She heard a quick knock on her bedroom door and jumped with a small squeal, only to jump out of bed seeing that it was merely her brother. As he rushed over to her bed, Natalie moved to throw her arms around his neck frightened out of her wits. The bells and whistles could only mean something bad was happening, and that was never a good sign.
“Shh, come on, Natie. We have to get downstairs. Mom and Dad are already up, and Dad made me come to get you. Everything’s going to be okay.”
Natalie stopped to grab her glasses and a hoodie to throw over her thin pajamas before rushing down the stairs with Bob. As they reached the bottom of the stairs, she could see the strain in her dad’s eyes and knew that it must be something bad, although as he caught sight of them, he smiled, doing his best to hide his worry from them. Only when the lights took another turn, spilling in through the front windows, did Natalie notice that both her parents were fully dressed in their military garments, as their mom had recently finished her nurse’s training.
“Now I don’t want either of you to worry. This is more than likely nothing, a simple routine drill. We’re not quite sure what the protocol for children is, but as soon as we reach the base, we’ll call to let you know, okay? Be careful, and take care of your sister.”
“We love you.”
And with that, their parents disappeared out the front door, heading off to do their duties and leaving Bob and Natalie sitting terrified on the bottom of the stairs. Natalie had begun to sob and her brother wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into his lap where he sat humming lightly to her. She had managed to calm down slightly when there was a sudden loud banging on the door, which caused Natalie to jump with a scream, which she hurried to stifle with her hands. Bob slowly stood, placing her lightly on the stairs, motioning for her to be as quiet as possible as he glanced out from the window in the door, pulling it open as he recognized the person behind it.

Ray’s first thoughts at hearing the sirens had been that it was another useless drill where he would have to go down to the mess hall to wait with the other children, so he took his time in getting out of the bed and pulling on a pair of jeans that had landed in the floor near his bed. But as he heard his mother’s nervous chatter, and a mention of the Bryars, Ray hurried with getting himself what he believed to be presentable. He rushed down to the kitchen where he briefly caught his mother’s concerned worries and warnings before he rushed out of the door and headed off to the Bryars’ house and his new friends, as they might not know the protocol.
As he reached their house, he rushed up the steps to the porch and loudly banged on the door, hoping that they were awake, and part of him hoping that they weren’t at home, that they had somehow known what to do in the event of the sirens that were already starting to give him a rather nasty headache. Although as the door opened, showing a disheveled and wary Bob. He raised his hands in a surrender motion, showing that he was a peaceful visitor. He glanced into the dark house and noticed Natalie curled up on the stairs, looking terrified and as if she had been crying.
“Come on you two. We have to get down to the mess hall. Hopefully this is just another drill, although sometimes the whistles and such have a short in the fusing or such. But we still have to get to the mess hall as soon as we can.”
Natalie had been doing her best to hide on the stairs as Bob had answered the door, but when she recognized that it was merely Ray at the door, she stood and walked to the door, wiping at her cheeks and eyes to remove all traces of the tears that had been streaming down her face earlier. She looked between Ray and her brother confusedly. She had no idea where the mess hall was, she hadn’t even seen any of the base aside from the small bit that she had rode past going to school and back.
Ray reached out and took Natalie’s hand and pulling her out into the cold air and starting off towards the mess hall, Bob following close behind. After several minutes of almost running, Natalie started to slow, trying to keep from having another asthma attack as she had left her inhaler in her room back at their house. Her brother must have noticed, because he quickly scooped her up and began to carry her, hurrying again to reach the mess hall where they would, hopefully, find out what was going on.
Soon enough, the large building came into view and they quickly made their way up to the door, Ray knocking and nodding to a young soldier who opened the door quickly letting them in. Ray led them over to a corner where they could sit in relative quiet away from the other base kids, most of whom were no older than ten years old. When they reached the corner, Bob gently laid Natalie down, frowning as she still seemed to be wheezing a little.
“I’ll be right back.”
Bob nodded and quickly sat down beside his sister and pulled her into his lap against his chest where he tried to calm her breathing down by getting her to match his own. After a few minutes, her breathing calmed and she seemed to have fought off the near attack. She turned and curled up in the safety of her brother’s arms, letting her eyes slide shut for a moment, only to pop open at the sound of footsteps rushing over.
“What’s her prescription? Two of the younger kids have asthma, so we keep a small kit here for emergency, but I didn’t know her prescription.”
“It’s okay, Ray. I’m fine. Thank you though.”
Natalie smiled up at her friend before she turned back into the safety of her brother’s embrace to close her eyes and try to rest a little. As soon as her breathing seemed to even out, both of the boys watching her knew that she had fallen asleep. Bob lightly laid her down beside him, smiling to himself as she curled up, still asleep. He gently removed her glasses so that she wouldn’t hurt them and put them in the pocket of his shirt.
“Ray, I think you’re a pretty okay guy and such, but I have to warn you about Natie. If you end up getting close to her and hurting her, I will hurt you. She’s always had a bit of bad luck with guys, most of the time being ignored by them or teased, so she takes it hard when something happens with a guy.”
Bob had noticed the way that Ray had been watching Natalie, and knew that their friend was at least a little interested in his sister. He had always been her protector, and nothing would probably stop him from doing so. Ray had shook his head at Bob’s warnings, knowing that whatever interest he might have in Natalie, that he would never intentionally hurt anyone.
“Bob, I would never intentionally hurt your sister. Besides, I’m not even sure if I’m interested in her like that. Not that you would know, but I sort of just ended a relationship myself. A girl from the last base my family lived on. I found out that she had been dating a guy behind my back. So you don’t have to worry about Natalie.”
Ray looked down startled as he felt Natalie’s hand on his. Seeing that she was still asleep, he didn’t think too much on the matter, but it still shocked him a little at the contact. Seeing the familiar milling about of the soldiers designated to watch over the mess area, Ray felt his eyelids begin to droop again as he started to feel the effects of being woken up by the sirens about an hour or so ago. He turned to Bob and noticed the same tired expression, although offset with a stubborn determination to stay awake to find out what was going on.
“Do you want to take turns sleeping? That way we’ll know if they find out something? I can go grab us a few mats and we can take turns watching while the other sleeps.”
“That sounds good. I’ll go ahead and take the first watch, if you want to catch some sleep. I’m not that tired anyways.”
Although Bob’s attempt to stifle a yawn proved that he was at least stretching the truth a little. Ray grinned and slowly slid his hand from under Natalie’s and walked off to grab two mats. When he came back to the corner, he settled them together and Bob gently lifted Natalie onto one, where after only a brief moment of disorientation, she fell asleep again, this time her hand tightly clasped in Ray’s as he took his spot on the other mat, closing his eyes and ignoring the warning glare coming from Bob, who now appeared to have lost all the tiredness from his eyes.
